Taylor Phinney was one of the brightest stars of American road racing in the 2010s. The son of professional cycling luminaries, he was a world champion by age 17 and became the first American to win Paris-Roubaix the following year as a U23. A year later, he won the race again for good measure. During his 10-year career on the WorldTour, Taylor raced for Trek-Livestrong, BMC, and EF Education First. When he announced his retirement in 2019 at age 29, it shook the sport, but according to Taylor, it had been a long time coming. Earlier this week, Payson sat down with Taylor in his art studio in Spain to talk about how his life has changed since he left racing. They talk about how he became more involved with his art in the final year of his WorldTour career and how cycling was no longer bringing him fulfillment. He explains why he's chosen to stay in the cycling mecca of Girona even though he isn't racing anymore, and how he's grown to prefer aspects of Europe that he used to find challenging. They discuss what it's like to still be in the realm of WorldTour racing as he supports his partner, Kasia, who rides for Canyon–SRAM, and how professional women's racing is so different from men's. They also talk about music, art, starting fires, and his obsession with handlebars. Instagram: @theadventurestache

Season 3 of Outspoken kickoffs with Taylor Phinney, longtime Thereabouts friend and first time Thereabouts Audio Wizard in Chief. Taylor has publicly discussed his retirement from professional cycling, but we remained a bit miffed how the American superstar, the media darling who ushered US cycling into the digital era, could walk away at age 29 and the prime of his career. Chatting with Outspoken from Girona Spain, the typically enigmatic Taylor gives raw insight into the confining nature of professional cycling. He unearths his initial motivation for pursuing sport at the highest level – and confronts how reality clashed with that fantasy. “You realize that actually, you're not like Harry Potter. You're not the hero of the story because you have to shut up.” –Taylor Phinney For Taylor, sport is like an hourglass: the grains of energy invested simply slip down into energy dissipated. You invest all of your strength, all of your time, all of your soul, and yet you get nothing in return. Taylor explains how athletic's fleetingness gave way to craving permanence through art. The reasons for Taylor's meteoric rise and abrupt exit from professional cycling raise questions about what it means to be a great athlete, what it takes to remain one, and what weight we should bestow those qualities. The same properties that instill Taylor with introspection and artistry, that innate ability to transcend his own perspective and consider his life in relation to the universe around him, may be exactly why he walked away from sport with theoretically much more to give. To what degree is consciousness incompatible with competition? Reflecting on his quest to live a meaningful life, Taylor feels compelled to give back to the sport that raised him. And in doing so, he shares how he rediscovered a pure love for exploring on two wheels. If you want to listen to this episode, as well as all past and future episodes of Outspoken, tune in wherever you listen to podcasts. And stay tuned for Scapes, a sonic tour inside Taylor's mind. What we meant to say... G'day sports fans, If you've missed us or wondered if we'd fallen off the face of the planet, we apologize we've been busy making films, but surprise our podcast is back. Gus and I have A quick word for you before we kick off season three of Outspoken. The first episode of the new season, with Taylor Phinney, represents a homecoming of sorts. I want to say that Taylor's story is in a way inextricably linked to mine, and that of thereabouts. His story feels personal, like meeting an estranged family member for the first time after twenty five years of living. As friends we've both been trying to figure out our place - reconcile our love for the sport that has shaped us, with our lived experience within it. It's taken years but finally it seems as though our paths are converging. The new season of Outspoken with returning host Abby Levene, kicks off a family of new shows we are producing. One of which is with the better half side of the Morton family tree, Lachlan, and the other is with Taylor Phinney. After years of figuring out our place in this world, we realize it's time that we just carve out our own. So we are, and we want to invite you in. Along with the new shows In the coming days we are launching a new discord, and webpage which we encourage you all to check out and join. We're also carving out a growing space for content, merch, and opportunities to bring the community together. Thereabouts exists because of you, and we have settled on a sustainable model that allows us to create more, more frequently and at the highest quality. Matt Stephens chats to Taylor Phinney about living the dream of riding whatever kind of bike he wants to, whenever he likes. How funemployment is equipping him with newly acquired and admittedly random skills. Plus we learn about his first love of football (soccer), and how a trip to the orthodontist helped him look like his childhood hero - if only for a short while. But when the Random Question Generator leads him to the topic of modern-day heroes, it's clear that Taylor's heart now lies in the arts.

Guillaume Boivin is toughing it out now in the final stages of the Tour de France. He's faced crashes, heat, mountain climbs and a lack of vegetables. Listen to find out exactly what's going on with his diet.Boivin also discusses the Olympics. Near the beginning of July, he was named as the third rider, after Michael Woods and Hugo Houle, who will be at the road race in Tokyo. While still in the midst of his first Tour, Boivin looks ahead to his next big objective. In a way, the two events are similar: Boivin's role is to help Woods cross the finish line first.Boivin has been with the team Israel Start-Up Nation in its various forms since 2016. Before that he did a season with U.S. team Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies. There were also two years on the Cannondale WorldTour team with riders such as Peter Sagan, Matej Mohorič and Elia Viviani. Going way back, Boivin was on the influential Canadian pro continental squad SpiderTech. In 2010, he famously tied for third-place with Taylor Phinney at the under-23 world championship road race. While Boivin loves to mix it up in a bunch sprint, throughout the past few years, he's developed into a skilled support rider with a range of abilities. Take the current Tour de France, for example. Boivin's first job has been to help a climber like Michael Woods with his goals of stage wins and the KOM jersey. Yet, Boivin can also help out a fast man like André Greipel. The Tour de France is stressful for riders. But was Boivin dealing with an added stress at the start of the Tour? He's a big hockey fan and his team is the Montreal Canadiens. (Also, make sure to listen to this story of Boivin's about catching a Habs game in Montreal with Sagan.) The Tour started just before the Stanley Cup finals got underway. With the time difference between France and North America, was Boivin losing precious sleep over his struggling Habs? That's where the conversation begins with this very Canadian rider.

You will love the musical alchemy as you go on an archaeological dig into your inner landscape and re-remember that you have the desire and capacity for both inner connection and connection with the outer world. Suggested props: 1-2 blocks and a bolster A note from Taylor and track list below! This is a Yoga class from @yoga-sesh with a mix of songs recorded to flow with the class. As a boulder native, I have spent the last couple of years attending Caitlin’s classes at the Yoga Pod or The Little Yoga Studio. Since I was racing bikes professionally, I would spend half of the year traveling in Europe, basing myself in Spain. I could never find the same yoga vibe as we have in Colorado so I became very grateful to have Yoga Sesh podcasts in my living room. At the beginning of March I came over to Europe for what was meant to be a 3 week vacation to visit with my girlfriend before she starts her cycling season (she also races, I just retired). Two weeks in we were forced into lockdown with nowhere to go. We spent 7 weeks inside our apartment unable to leave the house for any physical exercise, only to get groceries or go to pharmacy. I spent this time doing Yoga Sesh podcasts and learning more about a music program I use called Ableton. I had always used the program to make my own music but never to mix tracks from other artists. In this time I learned to mix and hosted some very small isolation dance parties. This episode of Yoga Sesh, Inner Archaeology, is one of my favorite flows and I noticed that at the beginning of the class there is some background audio from a class next door that doesn’t quite fit. I thought it would be informative to learn how to remove that background audio while still keeping the audio of the voice in tact. Since I took most of the low end out of the audio to get rid of the background noise, I thought music could create a nice foundation--I started playing tracks to the flow since I had taken the class many times and felt like I had a good grasp of what kind of music could accompany Caitlin's guidance. I had a lot of fun with it and reached out to CRK to see if she would be into it. I was nervous at first because her flows are like works of art in themselves and I wanted to do them justice. She ended up liking it and with some more little tweaks here it is :) TRACKLIST: [Song - Artist (Album)] Garden - Nicolas Jaar (Cenizas) Unblocked - DjRum (Portrait with Firewood) The Traitor - Menahan Street Band (Make The Road By Walking) Transcendence - Thievery Corporation (Sounds From the Thievery Hi-Fi) Tzantza - Nicola Cruz (Cantos de Vision) Little Raver - Superpitcher (The Golden Ravedays 1) All Around Me (RSS Disco’s All Over You Mix) - Johannes Klingebiel Sonnenblut Am Platz De Perlen - Durerstuben (Met Chin In Moo’s Eak) Most Pretty Girls Have Pretty Ugly Feet - HNNY Avril 14th - Aphex Twin (Drukqs) Galerie - A Winged Victory for the Sullen (Iris [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]) Naturaleza - Danis (Aliento) VIII. An episode which focuses on the pro riders using Zwift, taking in current pro riders, a new pro rider in the form of Leah Thorvilson, the winner of the Zwift Academy scheme which used the platform as a talent trawl and a former pro rider who’s discovering a new lease of racing life virtually. Shane and Nathan get the day off as Simon travels to Girona to spend some time with the Cannondale Drapac team. Whilst there, he caught up with Andrew Talansky and Taylor Phinney, huge stars on the World Tour circuit and enthusiastic Zwifters.  Leah Thorvilson has just completed her first UCI races with her new team Canyon SRAM, WMN Cycling. She talks frankly about the “horrifying” aspects of racing as part of the pro peloton but also how much she’s learning - and how fast.  Adrian Timmis raced the Tour de France in 1987 as part of the ill-fated Halfords ANC British team. Now he’s back racing, but on Zwift and he’s as competitive as ever. Adrian reflects on his experiences.  This episode is also packed with pro tips, from the pros, on how they use the platform to hone their form. Hear about “favourite” intervals from Patrick Bevin; Ryan Mullen; Tom Skujins – and what a debt Brendan Canty owes to the Zwiftcast’s very own Shane Miller. There’s also an interview with the team’s performance director, Keith Flory, explaining the value of indoor training.

Simon, Shane and Nathan are back together for more Zwiftchat and gossip. The trio kick off discussing a heart-warming story about a Zwifter in rehab who was helped out by a younger rider. It leads on to a bit of a grumpfest about the slow pace of development in the game. The chaps wonder why voice in-game – which would no doubt lead to more social interaction – seems to be taking so long. Simon reveals that a chat with pro rider Taylor Phinney reveals him to be a big Zwifter – and a huge gamer, and that prompts a thoughtful discussion about how gaming techniques and features could develop the training tool aspect of the game, and even improve the feel of racing. Shane goes into rant mode – justifiably, many would say, after Simon’s interview with a Zwifter who cracked his frame on the trainer, and then had a long dialogue with Specialized, who, initially at least, claimed that their frames are not warrantied for use in turbo trainers. The chaps agree that this situation is a mess, with inconsistency between some bike brands’ marketing and their warranty policies. The chaps move onto the race scene on Zwift, with results service guru Glen Knight making an appearance to talk about improvements to the service. Simon, Shane and Nathan follow up with an interesting discussion on whether racing in Zwift has become flat and one dimensional. They agree that more gaming style features could bring beneficial changes. Simon’s final feature after his visit to the Tacx factory takes a look at the highly automated nature of the trainer company’s production – and includes the revelation that the company’s best selling trainer is its most expensive – the Neo. The chaps discuss the implications of this for Zwifters and their expectations around indoor training. This podcast rounds off with an update on Shane’s new trainer review blog and all the latest from Zwift Community Live.
