Thank you to Pehr Magnus Karlsson, Head of Finance Transformation at EF Education First, for joining us on the EMEA Recruitment podcast. “Learn to deal with complexity, but also learn to simplify.” In this episode, Paul Toms begins by asking Pehr about the last thing that made him smile. Pehr had a call with a few technology specialists who were able to provide him with a demo solution and think outside the box, cultivating a great interaction. Next, we learn why Pehr has spent over 20 years with EF Education First. He shares that he has been surrounded by great people and has worked with great managers. He adds that it's never boring, as things arise unexpectedly, and he enjoys a challenge. In essence, being stimulated and surrounded by great people is what keeps Pehr loyal to the company. As Head of Finance Transformation, Pehr compares his role to a rollercoaster that is slowly ascending to the top – fun, exhilarating and a little scary. The company is about to go live with a new accounting system that will affect 50,000 people in 100 countries, which Pehr is looking forward to implementing. For those who wish to replicate Pehr's rise to the top, he emphasises the ability to simplify complexities. In Finance, the role requires you to sort, absorb and simplify information for the business, people, or processes. Later in the episode, Pehr lists a few leadership qualities that help him in his role. These are: having the ability to teach, but not lecture, and having the ability to listen. During his extensive career, he has been given opportunities throughout the function, leading Pehr to become a generalist, enhancing his ability to jump into different situations and provide solutions. Discussing his time management skills, Pehr reiterates the importance of communication in his role; with a lot of meetings in place, he must be mindful of the tasks he has to tick off. Onto the pandemic, we learn that Pehr did not find the COVID period very tough personally; he felt supported by the company, and working from home wasn't an issue, due to becoming accustomed to other conferencing tools and methods. He adds that people were innovative during the pandemic, coming up with new ways of working. However, he does acknowledge the struggles other employees may have endured. Paul asks Pehr about the next goal he wishes to fulfil. He shares that he loves to travel in his career and has spent time with colleagues in Latin America, which has inspired him to lean Spanish. Taylor Phinney was one of the brightest stars of American road racing in the 2010s. The son of professional cycling luminaries, he was a world champion by age 17 and became the first American to win Paris-Roubaix the following year as a U23. A year later, he won the race again for good measure. During his 10-year career on the WorldTour, Taylor raced for Trek-Livestrong, BMC, and EF Education First. When he announced his retirement in 2019 at age 29, it shook the sport, but according to Taylor, it had been a long time coming. Earlier this week, Payson sat down with Taylor in his art studio in Spain to talk about how his life has changed since he left racing. They talk about how he became more involved with his art in the final year of his WorldTour career and how cycling was no longer bringing him fulfillment. He explains why he's chosen to stay in the cycling mecca of Girona even though he isn't racing anymore, and how he's grown to prefer aspects of Europe that he used to find challenging. They discuss what it's like to still be in the realm of WorldTour racing as he supports his partner, Kasia, who rides for Canyon–SRAM, and how professional women's racing is so different from men's. They also talk about music, art, starting fires, and his obsession with handlebars. Instagram: @theadventurestache
Show Notes: Will Bachman and Ming Chen had a conversation about Ming's journey since graduating from Harvard in 1992. Ming is currently Chief Cultural Officer EF Education First, an education company with 50,000 employees. Will asked Ming to tell him a bit about what she does at EF Education First, and Ming explained that she is the company's Chief Culture Officer. Ming Chen is a long-time employee of EF Education First, a company that provides language programs, educational travel, cultural exchange programs, and academic degree programs. She joined the company in 1998 after graduating from college with an East Asian Studies degree, and she has since worn many hats. She advises people starting out their career to not be discouraged if their degree does not directly prepare them for a specific job. She found his way in by moving to Hong Kong and joining EF, which is meaningful, global, and fun. She has an MBA, but didn't know what she would do with it when she graduated, so she fell into the job. From Hong Kong to EF Education First Ming Chen, now a Chief Culture Officer, has had a long and varied career path. After graduating college with a degree in a concentration she wasn't quite sure what to do with, she began eliminating possibilities of what he didn't want to do. After spending summers teaching and working at Christie's Auction, she decided to move to Hong Kong due to her family's history there. She describes it as a magical place with access to the beach and the mountains. She compares it to a college campus with pay, and praises the efficient public transportation and the easy tax forms. She also mentions the difficulty of the reintegration to mainland China, but still calls it the mecca of capitalism. EF Education First is a company that provides educational services, including cultural exchanges. One of their cultural exchange programs is High School Year Abroad, which brings foreign students to public high schools in the U.S. to live with host families for a year. Another program is Cultural Care Au Pair, which helps match American families with au pair students. The programs are quite inspirational and transformative, as they help participants become fluent in English and American culture. The Backstory of EF Education EF Education first was founded in 1965 when its founder, Bertil Hult, who was dyslexic, took a group of Swedish students to Brighton for the summer to help them learn English. He believed that real-life, immersive learning was the best way for students to learn and this became the foundation for the Heritage Program. EF Education first then expanded to include German, Japanese and Mexican students and opened their first school in Hastings, England. Now, they have 600 schools and offices around the world and welcome students from 100 countries to learn English. As well as language schools, they also offer EF English Live, the world's largest online English school, with teachers teaching classes every hour. On Writing Books and Running Marathons Ming Chen has written with her identical twin sister Wah. Their book titled Escape: One Day We Had to Run was inspired by the story of the nanny who brought up Ming and Wah during their formative years. The nanny had to swim from mainland China to Hong Kong during the 1960s due to the famine. The nanny eventually made it to New York and was like a mother to Ming and Wah, though communication was difficult due to the language barrier. The duo also mention how the book was born out of a longer and more ambitious project. The book was written to help children cope with difficult and traumatic experiences. The book was born out of a larger product project that Ming and her twin sister had been working on for many years, and Carmen Vela, an artist based in Spain, was chosen as the illustrator. The book was published by Lantana Publishing, which was a great success. Ming is also a marathon runner, and she attributes her motivation to running to the friends she made while attending a freshman week party at the University of Pennsylvania. Ming mentions a professor at Harvard who inspired her: Roderick MacFarquhar, a leading scholar on the Cultural Revolution. In this episode Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the final unveiling of the 2022 Giro d'Italia route. The Giro stages have been revealed bit by bit this time in batches, rather than chronologically. Has this robbed the Giro route of some of its mystery and majesty or does it not really matter? And what are the other terrible innovations in recent grand tour history? It's track season, cyclo-cross season and silly season. We discuss the controversy of riders taking part in events on their new team's bikes before their contracts have expired in the light of EF Education First's threat to terminate Sergio Higuita and Lawson Craddock's contracts for doing just that. We ask whether Adam Yates's Barcelona marathon time was impressive for a professional cyclist. Richard's show and tell segment discusses a new show on GCN featuring EF Education First sports director Tom Southam teaching a bunch of fourth-category riders how to ride as a team, and we hear from Southam himself. And in the final part we speak to Tony Hoffa, a Friend of the Podcast who has recently secured a job in the World Tour with Team DSM as a mechanic – a move which came about after he listened to our Friends of the Podcast special episode A Team Apart. Long-time friends, training partners, and competitors, Jonathan Vaughters and Colby Pearce have a deep racing history and relationship. With decades of experience in pro cycling, they have gained many insights about training, coaching, and the trajectory of the sport. Colby and JV first discuss their early training techniques, taught to them by their first cycling coach, Adrie Van Diemen, a Dutch exercise physiologist now with UAE Team Emirates. Many of the techniques are now considered to be standard practice. The pair reminisce about how they were ahead of their time, in many ways, even though they didn't realize it. Vaughters, who has coached many pro cyclists over the years, then gives examples of experiments gone right—and wrong—and how certain training regimens should be applied to certain types of athletes. He also openly discusses the conflict of interest in coaching athletes while also serving as their team manager. The discussion then turns to the finer details of cycling technique, including a detailed explanation of how crank length affects a rider's ability to climb, sprint, and win. JV even describes the time he swapped cranks behind the back of his former team manager, Johan Bruyneel. Next, the conversation turns to Rigoberto Urán, who finished second in the 2017 Tour de France. The Colombian's diet at that year's race included bananas and… bananas. Vaughters uses that example to illustrate how the natural and simple solution oftentimes bests all of the “advanced” nutrition expertise in the world—and how athletes often discover what works best for them and “solve their own equation.” That, and much more, in today's episode of “Cycling in Alignment.” REFERENCES Book: “One-Way Ticket: Nine Lives on Two Wheels” https://www.amazon.com/One-Way-Ticket-Nine-Lives-Wheels/dp/0143134140 Coach Adrie Van Diemen http://www.webtrainer.com/nl/
