Earlier this year, he was the top American finisher at both TDS and Hardrock, placing 9th and 3rd, respectively. In this conversation, we cover a wide range of topics in a wonderfully organic way. Huge episode tonight! A lot to talk about. Farley gives a run down of his experience running Mountain Lakes 100 over the weekend. We both are in awe of Tara Dower's accomplishment setting the overall FKT on the Appalachian Trail, it's truly impressive. We go over race results from Mountain Lakes 100. Then we talk about one of the icons of ultrarunning, Anton Krupicka, who came out of nowhere and took second at Grindstone 100. We go over the results of the other races at Grindstone. Also talk about the young gun Hans Troyer who ran Grindstone 100K and it was his first race since taking 10th at Black Canyon 100K, where he ended up in the hospital afterwards with rabdo. Unfortunately Grindstone didn't go his way and he ended up with a DNF. We then talk about a possible shady maneuver the first place runner did to block the second place runner during a sprint to the finish at Mammoth Trail Fest 26K which was a Golden Trail World Series Event with major prize money on the line. We also go over the results from Mammoth Trail Fest races, the Barkley Fall Classic, the Cowboy 200, Pikes Peak Ascent and Pikes Peak (not quite) Marathon. Max King and Hayden Hawks both had some success at events overseas. We go over results from Dances with Dirt (Hell, MI), Flagstaff to Grand 100, IMTUF 100, and there is a new self-supported FKT on the Colorado Trail. Finally we end the show with the breaking news / controversy about Camille Herron and her husband + coach Conor Holt who got busted editing the wiki pages of other elite ultrarunnners to make them look less significant and editing her own page to seem more elite. We marveled at the athletic performance of the year to prepare for this great episode! It kicked off with us picking our jaws up off the floor, in awe of Tara Dower's overall record on the Appalachian Trail. Coach Megan delves into what made it possible (strides and speed) and what sets Tara apart (being a superhero). This achievement will take decades to fully process! The main science talk was a new study on Kilian Jornet's physiology data from 2022 UTMB, where he won in historic fashion. There are some wild pieces of information in this study that push the limits of what we know about endurance: biomechanical adaptations like reduced cadence, remarkable metabolic flexibility, shockingly high lactate levels, major reductions in hemoglobin, big variations in carb intake, and perhaps most interestingly--post-race cognitive impairment similar to brain injury patients. We jump into each finding, mixing theory with speculation about what comes next. And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: David's decision about whether to do the Javelina 100 Miler in October, a pros v. cons list, 7 tips for ultra logistics, why we hate chairs, Anton Krupicka qualifying for UTMB, rhabdo in college lacrosse and what runners can learn, a discussion of the amazing essay "A Case Against Supershoes" by Sabrina Little, a study on cooling headbands, the limitations of statistics in smaller sample-size studies, and how elite athletes fuel. This might be the most exciting time in running history, with breakthroughs in performances and in research, and we can't wait to share it with you all! Plus, jokes about Halloween costumes that show butt. We love you all! HUZZAH! Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes!Anton Krupicka is back on the podcast! Few athletes in ultrarunning generate as much excitement as Anton, and he's returned with a bang—recently setting a fastest known time on the iconic LA Freeway route and securing second place finish at the Grindstone 100 this past weekend.Beyond his impressive athletic achievements, which notably helped shape the ultrarunning culture in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Anton is a thoughtful and generous conversationalist. He shares plenty of insights in this episode. While the FKT and race results provide a backdrop, we also dive deeper into nostalgic ultrarunning memories (his friendships with Scott Jurek, Geoff Roes, and Kyle Skaggs), engaging discussions on philosophy (athlete personalities and bike culture), current events (Leadville 100), and his aspirations (UTMB and Hardrock goals).
This week we start off by going over results from all the main UTMB ultra races. Then we talk about what appears to be a miserable hot and humid 46 miler on a paved trail in Florida. Costume chick was out there representing! We talk about Stine Rex setting a new women's 6 day record. We discuss Kilian Jornet's new adventure he recently completed in the Alps. Anton Krupicka set a new FKT on the "LA Freeway" route, it's not in California and it's not paved. Will Peterson smashed the FKT on the Long Trail in Vermont. Tara Dower is over half way on her AT FKT attempt. Mike Wardian is also over half way. He even did the "1/2 gallon" ice cream challenge at the half way point. We end the show talking about a race that we skipped over when doing the results. The Temptation Ultras in central IL.

Dylan has an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of Ultrarunning in the earthly 2000's and brought a “College Gameday” vibe to the conversation that plays like 3 long time friends unpacking the movie on a weekly long run. In this episode, the hosts continue their discussion about the film 'Unbreakable' and the impact it had on the trail running community. They focus on the experiences and stories of the four main athletes featured in the film: Anton Krupicka, Geoff Roes, Hal Koerner, and Kilian Jornet. They focus on the early experiences and inspirations of the participants in the sport of trail running. It covers topics such as the first time they saw the movie 'Unbreakable', their introduction to Western States, the Montreal Ultra Cup team, and the influence of Scott Jurek. The conversation also touches on the legacy of David Horton, the impact of Jen Shelton, and the unique character of Ricky Gates. Unbreakable is a trail running film that had a significant impact on the sport. It captured a moment in time and showcased the legends of the sport, including Jeff Rose, Anton Krupicka, Hal Koerner, and Kilian Jornet. The film inspired a new generation of athletes and filmmakers, legitimizing the sport and paving the way for more emotional and documentary-style films. Joy is...A Way of Living.Jean-Baptiste Joly-Lavrieux is a photographer based in the French Alps. He spent over a decade in banking before leaving the profession to pursue his passion for trail running and photography. I was recently drawn to a series of photographs that Like the Wind Magazine shared from Jean-Baptiste's Instagram: images from the UTMB mountain race, all captured on a disposable camera. Although not his usual camera of choice, the experiment epitomises Jean Baptiste's fluid style that evokes his deep relationship with the natural world and how we move through it.After the initial look-a-like comparison with the infamous trail runner Anton Krupicka, we move on to discuss the differences between existing and living and how we can flip that narrative; holistic balance; the freedom of running; being a life-long student of photography and learning on the job; telling stories through the lens; the struggle between self-doubt and joy with creative work; naivety as both a frustration and a superpower; the contrast between individual projects and working to commission; an obsession with Jim Walmsley's doorstep; experiences from UTMB and the liberation that the disposable camera project provided; overcoming shyness; the relationship between photographer and subject; celebrating the unexpected; how running informs photography, and, likewise, how framing the world through a lens changes our appreciation of it.Follow: @jb_jolyCommission: www.jbjoly.com Hosted on Acast. Our guest today is an icon in the endurance running space, Anton Krupicka. Winner of the Leadville 100 as a fresh faced 23 year old in 2006, fifteen years later he was once again on the podium in 2021 at Leadville after a spate of injuries, but not a shortage of adventures over that time. Early in his career, Anton's blog became requisite reading material for all aspiring runners. His social media attracts millions of views. He writes prolifically and travels minimally… by that I mean, check out his stunning social media channel which features his bikepacking ventures.
Anton Krupicka finally ran his first race on the Beast Coast, The Clawhammer Mountain 50k in North Carolina. He shares his thoughts on the race and we talk racing, running, life and more. A fun conversation for sure.
Adrian MacDonald of Fort Collins, Colorado has taken to trail running like wildfire! Having competed in track and cross country in high school and college, and went to place 53 at the Boston marathon in 2018. He started trail running when the world shut down in 2020 and never looked back. Adrian toed the line at his first 100 miler at the Leadville 100 in 2021 and finished in first place beating legends like Anton Krupicka and Ian Sharman. In 2022 he went on to successfully defend his title having the 3rd fastest time in Leadville history. We chat with Adrian about his experiences at Leadville 100 and discuss what's next on his agenda. Anton Krupicka fell in love with running at an early age. He competed in his first marathon when he was 12 and started running mountain ultras when he left college. He went on to win the Leadville 100 twice, and place second at the Western States 100 in 2010. These days, he's added cycling and ski-mo to his competition schedule, recently completing the Unbound XL.In this interview, he tells Payson about growing up on a 600-acre farm in Nebraska and discovering mountain running when he moved to Colorado for college. After completing a few marathons, he went from running the Leadville Marathon to running and winning the Leadville 100 in just six weeks. He also talks about how injury forced him to diversify his athletic pursuits and how the mental and physical demands of ultra running differ from gravel racing.
Kia ora e te whānau. Exactly 160 episodes ago, when Anna Frost (or Frosty as she is known) came on our show, we gushed in the bio. Oh, how we GUSHED. And why not? Anna is, like, 100% one of the most successful trail and ultra running exports from Aotearoa. She burst onto the scene in what was the first wave of the professional ultra athlete, running for the mighty Salomon team. Going from spending weeks travelling around Europe partying and sleeping in the back of a station wagon to pulling on the white strip and racing for a European giant, Anna was catapulted into the media at the same time as other famous names such as Anton Krupicka, Scott Jurek,Geoff Roes, Kilian Jornet, and Tina Forsberg. Wait, we're gushing again. It's been a few years and we find Anna back in Dunedin with partner Braz and their daughter Skylar – enjoying the challenges of life, and reflecting openly on the privilege that whilst yes, things are tough at the moment (especially when you own a trail running tour company) at least bombs aren't raining down outside. We talk to Anna about the inevitable changes that parenthood brings and take a deep dive into coaching, training with little humans, and The Wild, the epic 100 mile race taking place in Queenstown in December. Anton was our very first podcast, 3 1/2 years ago! He was very articulate even back then: "Sometimes being successful means getting back to the car. Alive." He was also Episode 127 last year: "I don't identify with any one sport - it's about the pure experience" He's still crushing some huge, creative routes; last summer he cycled to the 6 highest peaks in 6 different mountain ranges, ran up them, then got back on the bike. Alone, Unsupported. ""Sagebrush & Summits" was the focal point of my summer - it took most of July - and ultimately it set me up to race Leadville again in August." Indeed, after cycling 2,300 miles over 21 days, he finished 3rd in the Leadville Trail 100. Besides prodigious endurance, Anton also remains a very thoughtful student of the sport, and an extremely articulate spokesperson - don't miss his thoughts: "When I set an objective for myself, I'm really trying to create an experience that's going to be meaningful to me, and put me in a situation that will force me into a headspace and orientation to surroundings I don't get in everyday life. Even having a partner will be a different experience." The 6 summits, from the blog post for La Sportiva: Kings Peak in the Uinta Range (Utah's high point, 13,528'); Grand Teton – the Teton Range's high point, 13,775'); Granite Peak in the Beartooth Range (Montana's high point, 12,807'); Cloud Peak – the highest mountain in Wyoming's Bighorn Range, 13,166'; Gannett Peak in the Wind River Range, Wyoming's high point, 13,804'; Longs Peak (14,255') in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, the dominant peak of the northern Front Range.
We recently talked to Anton about a number of things, including his recent return to racing; his ongoing exploration of different ways to move through the mountains; we get his completely unfiltered take on Murakami's What I Talk about When I Talk about Running — and that turned out to be such an interesting part of the conversation that we agreed we ought to re-read that book and then later this fall, come back to record another conversation about it. I'm excited to welcome Adrian Macdonald to the Hive. The leaves are now turning in Leadville, but a few weeks ago, Adrian won the Leadville Trail 100. Some of you might be legitimately asking, “Who is Adrian Macdonald?” At Winfield, 50 miles into the race, he was dueling for the lead with Hoka athlete Tyler Andrews, who appeared on WASP episode #129 in May, and Tyler said to me, “Who is this guy? He's tough.” Adrian wasn't yet a household name in Leadville, in fact, he'd never run a 100-mile race before. In the race preview articles, he didn't garner the attention of names like Anton Krupicka, making his return to ultramarathoning after a long hiatus, or multiple time Leadville winner Ian Sharman. Adrian was lumped into the paragraph of “dark horse contenders.” Although he wasn't without credentials, having placed second in last year's Austin Rattler 66K and winning the Antelope Island Buffalo Run 50-miler in March in a very respectable time. Adrian ran a bold race at Leadville, especially for a rookie, and crossed the finish line in 16:18, only just more than a half-hour off of Matt Carpenter's legendary course record, and with a 41-minute cushion ahead of runner-up Matt Flaherty, and 49 minutes over Krupicka. Adrian tells the story here that I hope you'll enjoy about his impressive Leadville win. For a complete and entertaining rundown of the race, be sure to check out last week's episode with Cole Chlouber, and also listen next week for our episode with 23-year old women's winner, Annie Hughes. Anton Krupicka is one of the most legendary ultrarunners in history. Bursting onto the ultra scene in 2006 with a win at the Leadville 100, Anton quickly became the representative for an entire generation of ultrarunners and directly contributed to the rapid growth we've seen in the sport. After many years of injury that kept him away from competition, Anton made his triumphant return to racing at this year's Leadville 100, where he finished 3rd place. In this episode we talk all about the Leadville performance but also spend time talking about Tony the human being and how he's evolved over the past 15 years. _________________________ Pyllars Links: App Download | Patreon | Instagram | Website | YouTube Dylan Links: Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn | Strava

This week Eugene and Matt come charging out of Level Four (well, figuratively) for an excellent conversation with Scotty Hawker. If you'd asked Scotty if he would have been in Europe 8 months ago, lining up for the 100km CCC, you probably would have gotten laughed at. In the last kilometre of his last run of 2020, Scotty sustained a potentially career-ending ankle injury. Further to this, and more importantly, Scotty was facing some personal issues which made the injury “the least of my problems”. As with other conversations we've had with Scotty you'll hear through this how he has built himself back, with discipline, seeking wisdom, and connection with others. Kinda feels like the conversation we needed to have at the moment, right? We have a beautiful Greatest Run Ever and holy moly it's 2014 all over again with Anton Krupicka running 100 miles. Who would've thought? Enjoy.
One of best known ultrarunners of his generation definitely has not stopped going big and going long ... he now does it across four different sports. Running, climbing, skiing, and cycling (but no hiking!) "I never thought or said, 'I'm not a runner anymore'; the space just opened up to do these other sports I'd always been interested in." Once known as the "Apostle of Minimalism", Tony might now be considered one of the most thoughtful, experienced, and insightful participants and commentator of endurance sports. "Ultimately you're just out there trying to develop and honest relationship with yourself. That's what your exploring. And the setting is there to facilitate that." Seth is one of those 'fast guys'. On one of the legendary CU track teams. He ran a 1:06:50 Half Marathon - while running a full Marathon. Meanwhile, Seth set FKTs on many of the Colorado 14ers, from Longs Peak to Mount Elbert ... where he tied Anton Krupicka's 8 year old FKT ... to the second. The very next day, Ryan Phebus broke it by a mere 3 seconds! "After the pressure of college, I took 4-5 years off, which allowed me to get the fire back." Seth is interesting, with a lot of knowledge and a unique perspective. And definitely check out his YouTube Channel - he does a good job with video - 93,700 Subscribers! http://youtube.com/sethdemoor
S1 EP07 - Why any kid decides to set out and dedicate themselves to a life of pain and suffering in pursuit of perfection in their sport is fascinating. A pure and naive dedication that seldom results in the life they thought it would. Today's guest, a kid from Nebraska who set out to run his first marathon at 12, started off with the same single minded pursuit, and when one looks back at his life some twenty plus years later you'd be hard pressed to call that twelve year old naive. Today we sit down with Anton, Tony, Krupicka, a true sports man who, by my account has stayed true to that twelve year old kid who ran a marathon for no real reason. Tony has always marched to his own beat, it seems. A trues multi sportsman Tony started running as a young kid and never stopped, staying true to just that, running, and running the way he wanted. He went on to graduate with multiple degrees on his way to making his name by winning some of the most prestigious ultra marathons in the world. We sat down with Tony to talk about running that marathon at 12, chasing 100mile weeks through school and 200mile weeks after it, to finally making a living as an athlete and winning the fabled Leadville 100. Not once but twice. To us he's the MJ of ultra racing. The Goat. What we didn't expect was Tony's response to that inevitable career crossroads, the power of arbitrary measures in finding meaning through adventure and the concept of loss. It's the day after the Matterhorn Ultraks and just four days after Kilian Jornet's successful attempt on the Matterhorn Summit record attempt from Cervinia. It has been quite a few days for this iconic mountain and although Kilian has excelled on both occasions, we all know, the mountain is still the boss. Kilian arrives with Emelie Forsberg looking relaxed and fresh after a late breakfast. I congratulate him (and Emelie) once again on topping the podium at the Skyrunning Matterhorn Ultraks race and ask him how he feels, ‘I am a little tired but feel good. I was certainly tired in the race but I didn't push too hard. I just did what I needed to do to win the race'. Our conversation turns the TNF UTMB and we discuss how the race will unfold for the men and women. Kilian and Emelie are animated at the prospect of Julien Chorier, Miguel Heras, Anton Krupicka and the other contenders going head-to-head. Emelie gets excited at the thought of Nuria Picas in the ladies race, it's her first 100-mile race and of course Emelie knows the Catalan well. We could talk all day but eventually I settle down with Kilian in a quiet corner and we discuss the Matterhorn. First recorded in September 2013. Going from spending weeks travelling around Europe partying and sleeping in the back of a station wagon to pulling on the white strip and racing for a European giant, Anna was catapulted into the media at the same time as other famous names such as Anton Krupicka, Scott Jurek,Geoff Roes and others. International success came however with not an inconsiderable amount of challenge for Anna. Fast forward ten years and Anna is now running for Merrell and co owns Trail Run Adventures with her husband, which brings people to beautiful parts of the world for trail running trips. We spoke to Anna via phone from her home town of Dunedin, where she is enjoying a much welcomed rest and awaiting the arrival of the couple’s first baby. Anna talks candidly, openly, and movingly about her journey with running, the successes and costs, and her abiding love for the sport. This was a true highlight for us and we are thankful for having the opportunity to speak to one of the legends of our sport. Enjoy!
What was the preeminent FKT in 2018? What inspired you the most? What are your predictions for 2019? Anton Krupicka, Clare Gallagher, and Peter Bakwin answer these questions and more! "Nick Elson on Half Dome and Joe Grants' Nolans - it's style versus pure performance." "When the TNF50 was cancelled, the ladies really threw down - watching Ida, Sandi, and then Taylor in less than a week was really cool." "Karel was super-rad - he cut the time by 10%, and didn't look like he was totally worked."
Throughout my entire life I have been fascinated by the act of shocking people out of their automatic modes of living. As such, I was intrigued by Salvador Dalí’s revolutionary perspectives on morality and society. He was a rebel and the genre of art that he worked under, Surrealism, was as well. Surrealism, Futurism, and Avant-garde are all thought provoking movements on the act of breaking the paradigm. To subvert the status quo is always my goal, to help my peers redefined their perception of what is possible, and those movements have evolved into something wholly unique: a New Surrealism that I believe is led by artists like Marilyn Manson and Megadeth, comedians like Key & Peele, and athletes like Anton Krupicka. A disparate bunch, but the one thing that they all have in common is that they break the paradigm. Blazing our own trails is not only an artistic mission, but an actionable tool for positive societal change and so always remember this: stay true to yourself!AUM,Jarod ContrerasSources:Artaud, Antonin. “The Theater of Cruelty (First Manifesto).” The Theater and Its Double.

"I very much read to have that experience of identifying across different perspectives and different cultures, which generally happens through literature. The characters could be people that you would never meet in normal life, but they could be having the same emotions or experiences that I have internally. It reaffirms the universality of the human condition." -Anton Krupicka We choose how we interpret the world, as such we can interpret positive things as negative or vice versa. Today I am honored to sit down and converse with Anton Krupicka. A name that holds many stereotypes and preconceptions associated with it. Arrogance might be a strong word to even associate with this name, but Anton is someone who is confident in his abilities. The adventures he pursues through that confidence can be perceived as arrogant or dancing to far to one side on a knife's edge of safety and caution. Over the years people have perceived and been, either negatively or positively, shaped by Anton's actions. However, if Anton is anything, he is nothing but truthful. That truthfulness combined with his adventures has been the basis for many an assumption and opinion of Anton Krupicka. In today's episode I sought to transcend the stereotype, preconceptions, and associations related to Anton Krupicka. This conversation is more than just about running or even the mountains. Today Anton and I delve into a subject that has been rarely discussed with him, reading. We explore his motivations for his voracious reading, how he has been shaped by books, the importance of reading, how reading connects you with our world, and much more. The mountains may fuel Anton's day, but he begins each of those days with a book. The simplicity in routine and dedication are beautiful things, so let's explore those and more today with Anton Krupicka. Growing up on his family's farm with 640-acres right outside his doorstep, it was almost impossible that Anton "Tony" Krupicka would avoid becoming a runner and adventurer of the earth. Inspired by his parents to remain curious about life Tony began his explorations at a young age. Fueled by his love for learning, a natural companion to curiosity, Tony attained his earliest education on running from pamphlets put out by Runner's World in the 1970s. The artistry of training the body intrigued Tony to no end and in preparation for his first marathon at the age of 12, he experimented with calorie counting, fasting and high mileage weeks. Tony continued running through high school and college which he attended in Colorado Springs via an academic scholarship. It was here that he was introduced to some of the most iconic running races like the Leadville Trail 100. Running 100 miles seemed quite impossible to Tony which was all the more reason to aspire to it. Led by his curiosity to test human limits, Tony eventually found himself at the starting line in Leadville in 2006, a race that would introduce him to the ultrarunning scene on a grand scale. Although he is most well-known for his achievements in the sport of ultrarunning and for being the face of several ultrarunning documentaries, Tony is also an accomplished climber, cyclist, and back country skier. He is hyper competitive but it's the intrinsic benefits that drive him to get out there every day and explore. Plagued by injury for most of his running career, Tony looks to other outdoor endeavors to keep his mind and body sharp. Tony is the quintessential student of life. He questions, he explores, he studies, he watches and although strong in his perspective, he is open to that of others. He is what I would call a life long beginner, someone who is open to new things and not afraid to follow the scent of joy. Anton is an American ultra-runner. He has won the Leadville 100 twice, the Rocky Raccoon 100 Miler, the Miwok 100K, and many other races. Anton is known for his long hair and beard and his minimalist approach, where he often runs with no shirt, short shorts, and with very lightweight running shoes. He ran his first marathon when he was twelve years old, and during college and his early 20s, he often ran upwards of 200 miles a week.
Anton has had a heckuva few months–and says he’s back in shape to win on the trails. As an athlete with such a stout resume, he has set himself up for Speedgoat, then UTMB later in the summer–both races that require a fair amount of climbing prowess–and he’ll be racing hard … The post Anton Krupicka ’14 appeared first on Ultrarunnerpodcast.com.
