On this episode meet Meaghan Hackinen. She is an ultra endurance cyclist who recently completed the Tour Divide which is over 2,700 miles of self supported bike racing that follows the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, from Banff Canada down to the US/Mexico border. Not only did Meaghan finish this grueling race 7th overall with a time of 15 days and 23 hours, she nailed first place in the women's division! Meaghan is tells us a bit about how she embraced the grittiness of the race by staying what she describes as consistently consistent. In addition to being an ultra endurance athlete with countless wins and FKTs, she is also a writer with two books focused on two wheeled adventures. Both South Away: 'The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels' and 'Shifting Gears: Coast to Coast on the Trans Am Bike Race' are available for purchase. https://meaghanhackinen.com/ www.murphologypodcast.com https://tourdivide.org/
Lael Wilcox is an ultra-endurance legend. And yet, aged 20, she'd barely ridden a bike. It was only when she started a new job 6km from her home and realised cycling was the most efficient way of commuting that she turned to two wheels.A love affair was born. And then she realised she was damn good at it. Now 36, Lael's won almost everything she could dream of: the 6,800km Trans Am Bike Race; holds the women's course record for Tour Divide (4,418km); has the fastest known time for the Arizona Trail… the list goes on and on.And now she wants to smash the women's round the world record – and is setting off from Chicago on May 26 to do just that. She aims to complete her trip around the globe in just 110 days. Lael spoke to Rob and Eliot about her spellbinding journey to this point – and how she plans to break an iconic record. We loved welcoming Lael to Just Ride and can't wait to track her progress. Andrew Backer decided to enter his first-ever bicycle race--but not just any old competition: the Trans Am Bike Race, a self-supported, ultra-distance ride that takes weeks to complete (21 days, for Andrew). Not only did Andrew do it, and complete the ride (a feat in itself); he was sixth overall, and the first American to finish! In this episode he shares what inspired him to go from weekend rider to racing 4200 miles across 10 states; how he figured out the strategies involved in this particular race (how much--and where--to sleep at night; why it's best to buy food at gas station convenience stores); what it was like to bike through hail, sheets of rain, extreme heat, and driving wind; and how the mental game was as important as the physical preparation to get to the finish line. Andrew also shares snapshots of lovely Americans he met along the route who helped him with encouraging words, an offer to fix a tire spoke, and a meatloaf sandwich. In this episode:01:53: What inspired Andrew to take on this challenge04:06: Describing a "self-supported, ultra-distance" bike race05:34: Why several racers dropped out, and mechanical issues Andrew faced along the way12:46: How many miles Andrew rode each day, and how much sleep he got15:45: The obstacles riders dealt with along the route18:00: What Andrew ate to fuel himself--but not weigh himself down21:41: Kind people helping the riders across America23:33: The times doubt or worry crept into Andrew's mind during the three week-long journey31:38: How he entertained himself while riding39:13: Andrew's creative ways to earn money to pay for the race expenses40:16: "You can't do it alone"41:38: How it felt to cross the finish line on day 21Want to know more about Andrew and the Trans Am Bike Race?Watch this interview with him during the race: https://youtu.be/vnLy41GFLwACheck out the Trans Am Bike Race's website: https://transambikerace.com/Want to know more about "What It's Like To..."?Sign up to be on our Insiders' List to receive our newsletters and insiders' information! In this episode he shares how he dealt with the disappointments and unfortunate accidents of 2018 and 2019 and got back to Ultra cycling. He shares his experience at the challenging Trans Am Bike Race. He talks about the many memorable experiences and kind people he came across as well as the challenging mechanicals he had to overcome to get to the finish line. Finding flow in modern life is increasingly challenging, Slushies, but we sure found it here in two poems by Erica Wright. Loosely defined as the melting of action and consciousness into a single state, flow in poetry allows us to fully inhabit the world or experience conjured up by the poet. Nothing serves to distract or pull the reader out of the poem. How do we get there? There isn't just one way. It helps when the poem's form is attuned to the pacing required by the subject matter or focus. Strong beginnings always help -- and there are two fantastic ones here -- as well as a system of imagery that's both relatable and unexpected. In “Marine Biology”, we see a conversational style used in parts of the poem that's deeply grounding, and in “Too Many Animal Stories” the poem's form supports its dense mosaic of images and moments. This episode is brought to you by our sponsor Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Jason Schneiderman, and Dagne Forrest. Erica Wright's latest poetry collection is All the Bayou Stories End with Drowned (Black Lawrence Press). She lives in Knoxville, Tennessee with her family where she enjoys looking at the mountains and not camping in them. Socials: Twitter @eawright, Instagram @ericawrightwrites, Facebook @ericawrightauthor, Author website Marine Biology Not even my dog knows me, hovers outside the bathroom as I wash blood from the porcelain, wipe up the floors. I feel more at ease with the mess than the pain. We're not supposed to talk about that anyway, my fleet of would-be mothers who never labored but birthed something too. Mine half-seahorse, half-anemone like something you'd find in an off-season coastal gift shop after looking for whales and not finding any whales. And now my skin turns blue as if my veins are submarines surfacing after too long underwater. Did you know the Navy studies sharks in hopes of making better ships? Can you imagine? Mariners on megalodons. Let's name them after our ancestors. Let's hold the notion of them inside our heads until they're real. Too Many Animal Stories In the same town where a man's gun discharged, killing a woman across the street, we ordered sandwiches and watched tourists rent inner tubes to hold their bodies up in the river below. I've been sick for weeks now, bad sick at first, and now I can hold myself up. You started grinding your teeth at night, and it hurts to move your jaw in the morning. We joke about low points. We joke about how we'll never leave this house again. Of all the days to miss, I can't say why I latched onto that one in Helen, Georgia. We find a movie about the Trans Am Bike Race, and I make a joke about my dad's old car with a phoenix on the hood, its wings spread with such precision that they never spilled over the sides. Sometimes a snake hid underneath and was so long it could stretch its body from one side of the two-lane road to the other— tail in one ditch, head in the other— a perversion of that joke about the chicken. The thing about being sick while the world has stopped is that I start to wonder if it's all a carousel game, and we're being punished for trying to jump off. When I push myself off the bathroom floor again, the tiles won't stop spinning. Asbestos. I remember the real estate agent warned us about asbestos and not to take them out ourselves. I like the bathroom. The porcelain tub feels like ice when I rest my head against the side, wait for stillness. You take out the trash for us because of the rats. I don't mind them, but once when one ran across my foot, I couldn't get clean enough after. The neighbors coo over our new dog, leave chicken bones for her, which we pry from her teeth. Sometimes the incisors scrape my skin, and she never apologizes for her nature. I apologize for mine all the time. I'd prefer to be hearty, the kind of traveler who could take a cross-country train alone and sleep sitting up, living on trail mix and Coke. Not the one who needs sea bands. They sound like the bracelets of some strong-willed mermaid who doesn't care what anybody thinks of her, but they're cheap elastic with plastic eyes. Outside my window, the wind harasses the trees and their new leaves, which are less impressive than the old ones. Last year, a grim lived there, and I'd make up stories for him before bed. Not that he slept. Not that I know of. There once was a hellhound who loathed the predator rigamarole. He disliked the rending of flesh and gnawing of bones. The howling he could take or leave. One day sheep wandered below him. They smelled of honeysuckle and dirt. They didn't bite each other then pretend they were joking. He sewed his costume right away. There's not much more I can say about the rat from earlier. He fell from a trash bag and leapt at me, tiny claws digging into my shoe. A medium-sized rat. They say they're more afraid of us than we are of dying.

Lael Wilcox is an ultra-endurance bike packer from Alaska. In racing, she's excited to compete against the whole field and sometimes wins overall. She's extremely motivated to encourage more women & girls to try bike packing. She organizes a girls cycling mentorship program, women's adventure scholarships & bikepacking challenges. Lael started bicycling in 2008 at age 20, when she and her partner decided to tour the world. Working stints to collect money, the two set out on a bicycle tour of over thirty countries. They started in North America, then traveled in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, logging over 100,000 miles. Lael entered the Holyland Challenge, a 1000-mile unsupported race across Israel. She was both the youngest rider and the only woman. She led the race by 25 miles the first day, and although she did not win the race, she became hooked on endurance racing. In 2016, Lael participated in the 4,400 mile Trans Am Bike Race that crosses the United States from west to east. Lael averaged 235 miles per day for 18 days, averaging less than 5 hours of sleep per night and ending up winning the race outright. In 2018, Lael became only the second female to complete Switzerland's Navad 1000 bikepacking race, finishing in second place. The race features 627 miles distance and 99,770 feet of climbing. Lael's race was commemorated in the film I'm Not Stopping produced by Rugile Kaladyte (who is now her wife!) The Trans Am is the premier self-supported road race across the United States, traversing over 4200 miles. She discusses: The exhilaration of winning outright Her strategy and logistics for winning such a grueling event The power of beating the boys - "A Win for Womankind" A woman's capacity for resilience and grit What it was like being constantly doubted and questioned Handling the physical and mental aspects of pain and how she made friends with it Lael also runs Tucson GRIT and Anchorage GRIT (girls riding into tomorrow), a cycling mentorship program, for girls ages 11-13. In this episode of the Bike Tour Adventures Podcast I have the chance to speak with one of the most bad-ass women I know of. I first heard about Meaghan when I was researching the Northcape - Tarifa bike race and saw that only 1 Canadian had previously raced the event. On top of that, she has bike toured Canada, the USA and Mexico, raced the Trans Am Bike Race, NorthCape 4000, Paris-Brest-Paris, and was the 2019 World 24hr Time Trial Champion and course record holder in the women's division. More recently she finished 3rd in the Alberta Rockies 700, and crushed the BC Epic 1000 as the overall winner, while setting a new women's FKT. On top of that, she has ridden lots of other grand brevets, races, and mini tours. Furthermore, she holds an MFA in writing, has been published in numerous cycling journals and magazines, and has recently written a travel memoire, titled "South Away: The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels". All these accomplishments aside, Meaghan is extremely humble and modest and I am super thrilled to finally have the chance to listen to her story. Episode 8 of ‘The Wheel Community' podcast is out today! This week's episode covers my talk with Brantley Tyndall, Director of Outreach for Bike Walk RVA, Trans Am Bike Race finisher, and selector of delicious snacks (watch the video). He shared his history of cycling at VCU, some of the challenges advocating for safe cycling spaces, and enduring through the Trans Am Bike Race. And there is a short video of our conversation, for anyone that might want to see what it looks like behind the audio (google search for - ‘TWC ep 8 Brantley - preview video' or use the link to youtube below, ~6 minute video) https://youtu.be/Af4aKP34FTE
This week, I'm speaking with Meaghan Hackinen, winner of the BC Epic 1000. Meaghan lives in Kelowna and has ridden a few sections of the Epic before but this was her first time riding the Epic in its entirety. This was also her her first time riding an off road event like this. She had only purchased her Cutthroat weeks before and had to tune up her riding skills for the dirt. All things considered, she crushed this track.Growing up in Surrey, BC, Meaghan spent a lot of her time playing team sports, but her attention was drawn to individual sports once she began to work in the ski industry. After a knee injury, her physiotherapist recommended cycling as a low impact way to stay active and keep the body moving well into “old age”. Personally, being a half century old, I relate to this advice. Meaghan's endurance resume is impressive, having ridden events like the Trans Am Bike Race, her Everesting of Knox Mountain and the North Cape 4000. All of her accomplishments can be found on her website. Meaghan is also a writer with many published pieces such as her book, South Away: The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels. This was a great conversation and it was a pleasure getting to know Meaghan and what makes her tick. We discuss the Epic as well as some of her other accomplishments. We share stories from the event and also discuss the importance to endurance athletics, creativity and vulnerability and the ways these things help us grow as humans. This week, I wanted to pick the brain of a brilliant filmmaker, Mike Dion. Mike is an award-winning filmmaker, marketing strategist, and multimedia storyteller who has made a living over the last 20+ years applying all the tools needed by a filmtrepreneur. He's found his niche creating documentaries of adventurous brevets and transcontinental cycling races across the US, Mexico, and CanadaMike has produced globally distributed feature-length projects like Hair I Go Again (2016), Inspired to Ride, Reveal The Path, Where The Yellowstone Goes, and Ride the Divide that can be streamed across major platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes. On June 7, 2014, forty-five cyclists from around the world set out on the inaugural Trans Am Bike Race, following the famed TransAmerica Trail. Their mission is to cover 4,233 miles in one enormous stage race, traversing through ten states in a transcontinental adventure of epic proportions. Inspired to Ride follows a handful of cyclists from around the world as they race unsupported in the inaugural year, with four cinematographers, cameras flying in the sky, and GoPro’s galore. Mike produced the Inspired to Ride documentary in 2015.Here's a peak of Mike's latest documentary, Hair We Go Again: Facing a midlife crossroads, two longtime friends risk everything as they set out to fulfill their dreams of achieving rock & roll stardom. The first and last chances happen only once as their improbable journey is chronicled in the feature-length documentary, Hair I Go Again. One of the reasons I invited Mike on the show was to have him share what he's doing, how he's selling content, what's making money, and what's not making money. In 2008, he created Mike Dion Productions which original content like films, strategy, and branded content for social media, marketing, etc.In 2012, he paired with his producing partner, Hunter Weeks for his directorial debut documentary film, Reveal the Path---A genre-defying adventure film that contemplates what it means to live an inspired life using the bicycle as a mechanism to explore, dream and discover. In true Mike Dion niche-storytelling fashion, one of his first producer/editor gigs was the award-winning feature film about the Tour Divide Race in 2010 titled, Ride the Divide. The film weaves the story of three characters' experiences with immense mountain beauty and small-town culture as they attempt to pedal from Banff, Canada to a small, dusty crossing on the Mexican border. The Tour Divide Race is basically a mountain bike race that traverses over 2700 miles along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. The COVID pandemic has required everyone to profoundly change how we budget, prep, and produce a feature film or television show project in order to work safely and effectively. So this is a very educational episode if you are looking to learn how to safely shoot a feature film during COVID and how to make money from it.Enjoy my informative conversation with Mike Dion.

This week on the podcast, I speak with Keith Morical. On June 14th 2020, Keith started his Guinness World Record breaking attempt of riding to each of the 48 contiguous states on his bike. On July 16th, he arrived in Kittery, Maine breaking the record by 12 days. His final time? 31:22:29. A staggering ride of 11,400km / 7,075mi and 64,600m / 212,000ft of climbing. Keith is no stranger to competing in endurance events. In 2019 he took 2nd in the Trans AM Bike Race finishing in 19:11:53, a full day ahead of Omar Di Felice.“Nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems. All things just are. We can make them what we want”As soon as Keith learned to ride a bike at the age of 5, cycling has been a deeply ingrained part of his life. Drawn by the freedom provided by the worlds most noble machine, he had no idea just how far the bicycle would take him.At a young age, Keith struggled with dyslexia and knew intrinsically that he had to work to improve himself. This philosophy became a deeply meaningful career and he made “Self improvement for him self and others” his life’s purpose. His company, Actualiz, wants to help businesses and individuals understand their purpose and start living it. Keith lives his philosophy and vision and wants others to do the same. Part of the project includes a mini documentary “Riding to Inspire - Bicycling 48 States in a Month!” created by Jeremy Rubier and Kyle Miller of Miller Visual. This is a very inspirational conversation and I so enjoyed speaking with Keith. It was an honour connecting with him and I hope that you find as many takeaways in this conversation as I did.
“You cross the state line into Virginia and there’s that kind of magic Appalachian feel that I crave all the time when I want to go out and ride. Her most notable accomplishments include winning the 4,300 mile Trans Am Bike Race outright (after passing the lead male rider in the final miles) and setting the record for the 2,750 mile Tour Divide (after riding thousands of miles to the race start from her home in Alaska). She has spent the past eleven years traveling the world on her bicycle, logging over 100,000 miles in 35 countries. In addition to racing and riding, Lael puts a lot of effort into getting more women on bikes. She organizes a teenage girls bicycle adventure program in her hometown and has hosted two international women's scholarships. Payson sat down with Lael the day before Dirty Kanza, where she went on to win the DKXL. They chat about redefining mental limits of endurance, the wacky logistics of ultra racing, her epic duel in the final miles to win Trans-Am, and getting more women on bikes. They end their conversation with some questions that were sent in by her fans and some legends of the sport, such as Rebecca Rusch.
Racers from this year's Trans Am Bike Race shared their stories and answered your questions on ultra endurance cycling at Look mum no hands! LIVE on Tuesday 31st July. The Trans Am Bike Race is based on one guiding principle: Cycle the Trans America trail end-to-end, as fast as possible in a solo, self-supported fashion. https://transambikerace.com/ *Please note I fudged up the recording at one point and there is a moment of silence while they are talking!* - Editor Alex ~ Host ~ Ultra endurance cyclist Laura Scott https://twitter.com/Laura_Scott ~ Panel ~ Darren Franks A veteran of numerous ultradistance races, Darren has always strived to make a hash of things in bold and innovative ways, in a bid to have the most interesting experiences possible. The Trans Am was intended to be boring and fast. It started well but some habits die harder than others. George and Daniel Tovey went out and bought bikes after watching Inspired to Ride, particularly Mike Hall's formidable yet humble attitude resonated with the pair. They found themselves at the TABR2018 start line, with the Be More Mike single they had recorded raising money in memory of Mike Hall in full swing, probably not enough miles in their legs, and definitely more than a little naivety. A few mantras and a LOT of granola got them to Astoria 35 days later. Twitter: @beatsgoliath IG: @beatsgoliath Stephen Haines A bike rider who is happy to spend time on his own, watching landscapes pass by under the wheels and listening to accents and language change. Veteran of Transatlantic Way 2016, TCRNo5 and TABR 2018. Instagram: @haines3308 Steven Pawley Disillusioned with the daily grind, Steven started his ultra endurance cycling career in 2014 by riding in an unsupported two-man team from Nordkapp, Norway to Cape Town, South Africa in 102 days - a world record attempt. Since then, he successfully completed the TCR #4 in 2016 and a 2,000 mile bike-packing tour of Australia. Despite knowing better, he then decided that North America, and specifically the TransAm Bike Race, was next. ~ Track ~ Evangelion - A Cruel Angel's Thesis: Bike Horn Cover www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUamHEvVQy0Sounds ~ Follow us ~ Twitter twitter.com/WheelSuckersPod Instagram www.instagram.com/wheelsuckerspod/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

As recently as 1939, a London woman made her living by setting her watch precisely at the Greenwich observatory and "carrying the time" to her customers in the city. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll meet Ruth Belville, London's last time carrier, who conducted her strange occupation for 50 years. We'll also sample the colorful history of bicycle races and puzzle over a stymied prizewinner. Sources for our feature on Ruth Belville: David Rooney, Ruth Belville: The Greenwich Time Lady, 2008.
