What happens when you leave a situation that is holding you back and you start betting on yourself? Anything becomes possible in the case of today's guest, Vicki Anstey. After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her, this former advertising professional, turned fitness pioneer and award-winning entrepreneur, became (at age 41) one of the first ever women to participate in Channel 4's ‘SAS Who Dares Wins', reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, she and two other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her most recent endeavor was a five day race in one of the northernmost, remote parts of the world, The Arctic. She covered a distance of over 230km in temperatures of -35 degrees, carrying everything she needed to survive.Up next? She and a team of three other women (Four the Record) are tackling the World's Toughest Bike Race, the Race Across America (RAAM), covering 3,000 miles across 17 states in just 7 days. They are attempting to break the women's world record in this event. On paper, Vicki is an avid adventurer, but her biggest achievements are less about the adventures, and more about her self-discovery. In times of adversity and extreme difficulty, Vicki learned to tap into her self-reliance, trust, and emotional endurance.Today, Vicki shares her personal story with Sara, including:Her career changes and personal growth from advertising executive to entrepreneurHow she followed her gut instincts, which led to Vicki opening the first Barre studio in the UKThe personal and professional growth that stemmed from leaving her controlling relationshipHer transformation from “non-athlete” to extreme adventurerOvercoming her personal fears and adapting to challenges in all of her experiencesLessons learned from her personal and physical adversityHoning the skill of emotional endurance, which involves understanding, processing, and letting go of emotions, rather than just tolerating themDeveloping the muscles of self-reliance, mental toughness, and resilience, especially in times of turmoil and extreme personal difficulty What's next? Another World Record attempt at RAAM and how you can helpVicki's story is one of wild bravery and self-knowledge, but her true wisdom comes from her own internal journey and ability to understand her strengths, remain emotionally resilient, and overcome her fears. These are the skills that make her incredible achievements all the more inspirational.Vicki Anstey WebsiteVicki's InstagramFour the Record RAAM WebsiteFour the Record InstagramRegister for the Feisty Summer STRONG Course: https://www.womensperformance.com/strong Sign up to Receive The Feisty 40+ Newsletter:https://www.feistymenopause.com/blog/Feisty-40-plus Sign up to Receive The Feist Newsletter:https://www.womensperformance.com/the-feist Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance...

For the next few weeks, we'll be coming to you with conversations I had at one of my favorite cafes, Farm Girl in South Kensington, London. This week's guest is Vicki Anstey, an almost overwhelmingly inspiring woman. Vicki is a world record holder, adventurer, award-winning entrepreneur, speaker, coach, and athlete. After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her and a successful career as an advertising professional, Vicki became a fitness pioneer and later one of the first ever women to participate (at age 41) in Channel 4's SAS Who Dares Wins, reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, exactly a year before this episode was published, she and 2 other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her latest endeavor was a 5 day race in the Arctic, covering a distance of over 230km in temperatures of -35 degrees, carrying everything she needed to survive In 2023, she plans to participate in the World's Toughest Bike Race, the Race Across America (RAAM), covering 3,000 miles across 17 states in just 7 days. Listen as we discuss:How Vicki realized her extraordinary potential at age 40.Her memories from SAS Who Dares Wins (video here) and surviving interrogation.Pushing your limits and learning how to get through them is the only way to evolve. Why Women adapt better to calorie and sleep deprivation. How her ongoing divorce became a useful comparison for tolerating present suffering.Rowing the Pacific Ocean dealing with fear, storms, and talking to the moon. When you're already in the arena, fear becomes less of a concern.Vicki was in her past life. What should you do if you're not reaching your potential? You learn a lot about teamwork and the importance of naps! In this episode, Morgon takes on the role of guest and Jody interviews him about his recent experience in the Race Across America (RAAM). We explore what happens when a team full of leaders is put together, the importance of being a good follower, how self-care factors into such a huge endeavor and transcends the ultra world into everyday life. Jody and Morgon share a passion for leadership, love, and people. “That L Word” is their brainchild born over the best Mexican food downtown Jacksonville, NC has to offer and is meant to evoke the word, “Love” in the same conversation as, “Leadership.” We believe that leadership and love belong in the same sentence and aren't afraid to cut past the noise and talk about what really matters. On “That L Word” we talk about love, empathy, trust, loyalty, listening, life, and ALL of the other things that people are afraid to say out loud in the same sentence with leadership. Leadership is ALL about people and people have feelings, leaders included - so get in here! Sit down and let's talk about the stuff that might make you uncomfortable, but will absolutely make you a better person and leader! Please take a minute to subscribe and leave us a review! Geoff and Gerry caught up with the Sonoma Creamery ultra endurance cycling team before their Race Across America (RAAM). Listen and hear what they had to say about how they prepared for this amazing expedition.Race Across America is the World's Toughest Bicycle Race! A classic American tradition, drawing racers from around the world. Solos racers have 12 days and relay teams have 9 days to complete the journey. The courses of both races have varied over the years. However, in the Race Across America, the direction has always been from the west coast to the east coast of the United States, approximately 3,000 miles (4,800 km), making it a transcontinental event. More importantly, the race has no stages, i.e., it is in principle a nonstop event from start to finish, with the fastest competitors needing slightly over a week to complete the course. Team Sonoma Creamery:We ride to promote teamwork, physical and mental fitness and a healthy lifestyle. We raise awareness for cycling safety and to support injured cyclists in need. Your muscles and connective tissues can get “stickier” and feel stiffer during the menopause transition, and you can find yourself with more aches and pains and niggles than you had before. Massage therapy can help with that. But the benefits don't end with your muscles. Massage is also good for the menopausal mind. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system to lower cortisol and anxiety. It also can provide a safe space for you to release past trauma, reconnect your physical and emotional self, and let your body rest in a totally safe environment. We talk all that and more this week with massage therapist Rosemarie Rotenberger. Rosemarie is a Licensed Massage Therapist for 22 years. Her Olympic and World Champion clients span several continents and have competed in every summer Olympics since 2004. She has crewed for the Race Across America (RAAM) record holding team twice. Her work engages both the physical and emotional challenges of higher level sport. She has taught in both entry level and advanced orthopedic massage programs and served on national advisory boards. **Support the Podcast** InsideTracker: 20% off at http://insidetracker.com/feisty (insidetracker.com/feisty) Previnex: 15% off your first order with code HITPLAY at https://www.previnex.com/ (https://www.previnex.com/) Bonafide: 20% off your first purchase when you subscribe to any product with code HITPLAY at http://hellobonafide.com/hitplay (hellobonafide.com/hitplay) Nutrisense: Use code "HITPLAY" at https://nutrisense.io/hitplay (nutrisense.io/hitplay) for $30 off any subscription to the CGM program Velorosa Cycling: Enter HITPLAY15 at checkout and receive 15% off an order of full-priced cycling wear at http://velorosacycling.com/ (velorosacycling.com) Go to http://feistymenopause.com/podcastguide (feistymenopause.com/podcastguide) for more information about the Hit Replay Podcast Guide subscription This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podsights - https://podsights.com/privacy Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

On today's show, I talk to someone who has been called the “Toughest Woman Alive”. Get this, as a teenager, she got obsessed with kickboxing and became a world champion. Leah then spent 9 years in the Israeli commandos and secret police - becoming a Krav Maga Instructor for their Elite Commandos. And then upon retiring, she got into cycling… and in 2005 after winning 9 of her first 11 races, she was involved in a horrific crash that left her hospitalized for two and a half months and she was told she would never walk without a cane… let alone get back on a bike… But if that wasn't enough, Leah recovered and started competing in the Race Across America (RAAM)... eventually winning the race having ridden 3000 miles, climbed 175,000 feet, crossed 12 states with a time of 11 days, three hours and three minutes… Now, if that's not someone who can teach us a never-give-up attitude, I don't know who can. It's easy to look at the barriers we face and think, “I can't.” Leah Goldstein is here this week to show you, you can. Leah won the Race Across America (RAAM) outright last year at age 52, beating the next closest man by 17 hours. But that barely scratches the surface of her myriad accomplishments and the indomitable spirit that we dive into on the show this week. Leah was the World Kickboxing Champion by age 17. Shortly thereafter, she enlisted in the Israeli Military and became one of the few female instructors of the elite Commando division, specializing in Krav Maga. She later transitioned into Special Forces where she helped combat terrorism and violent crime. At age 30, she became a professional cyclist, and a few years later came back from one of the most horrific crashes in pro cycling history. Her memoir is aptly titled No Limits. Leah was born in Canada, conceived in Israel, and raised in Vancouver, B.C. by new immigrant parents. Growing up in Richmond, B.C., daughter of a boxer. Leah became involved in martial arts, Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing. After being told she should never fight again because she had herniated disks in her back, Leah won the Bantamweight World Kickboxing Championship at age 17, against a 25 year old fighter a foot taller than she was! Leah felt a deep desire to serve her time in the Israeli Army, (a mandatory 2 years for women and 3 years for men). Leah knew that she wouldn't be satisfied just being a soldier, she wanted to become the first woman ever to be an Elite Commando. She didn't just become an elite commando, she became a Krav Maga specialist, and became the first female Elite Commando Instructor. After leaving the Army, Leah pursued a career as a professional cyclist in Europe and North America. After a serious accident in 2005, Leah spend 2.5 months in the hospital where she was informed by doctors that she would never race again, let alone walk without a cane. Leah proved them all wrong, and came back stronger than ever before, she went on to win the Women's Solo Division of Race Across America (RAAM) - the Ultra Endurance, 3000 Mile, 12 day, single stage race in 2011, and coming in second in the women's division and fifth overall in 2019.
Topics Discussed: Peter's career history, how it relates to what he is doing now, and the reason why he and Phil haven't spoken in so long. Peter's youth, the troubles in Ireland when he grew up, and how he developed a love for flying. How Peter's love for lying led to his pursuit in the military field. The details of Peter's early military career and he eventually found himself working as a training officer. Peter developing his love for sports, and how that helped him figure out what he would do after his military career ended. How this led to Peter building a team to attempt the Race Across America (RAAM). The difficulty of preparing for the race, getting the team together, and ultimately how Peter and Phil met! The statistics of the RAAM; its length and the climates they had to ride through. The locusts they had to ride through early on in the race, and the cultural shock they experienced when dealing with America's wildlife. Phil's memory of deciding to apply for joining the support staff for the RAAM, and why he thinks Peter picked him. Phil's opinion that he thinks the RAAM was actually more difficult for the support crew due to the sleep deprivation. Peter's opinion that support crews are the real unsung heroes in the sporting world and also the commercial world. The importance of sleep, and how testing sleep deprivation is for people and their mentality. The team's target to beat the previous military's four-man RAAM record, and the number of miles they had to cover in order to beat that record. The sandstorm which hit them all whilst going through the desert, and how terrible it was for the riders who had to deal with it. The team's decision to stay at a hotel overnight to sleep to help tackle the fatigue, and how it was against the plan but the right call to make. The strategy they adopted for the race, and how they altered this throughout the race when needed. How Phil got lost whilst driving the Winnebago, and how he had to make some risky maneuvers in order to return to the main road. How badly things can go so quickly, and how one of their racers crashed and had to go to the hospital, turning their four-man team into a three-man team with a new strategy. How the crash spurred the team on and helped them finish the race with a renewed purpose. How the race ended on a freeway, and the feeling when they finally finished the race. How during the end Peter needed something to eat, and he ended up eating a subway on the bike towards the end of the race. The fact they stopped emptying the Winnebago septic tank towards the end of the race as they were trying to save time, and the tank's contents ended up coming out of the toilet and onto the Winnebago floor. How they managed to beat the 7-day record by a handful of minutes! The lessons Phil and Peter learned from taking part in the RAAM, and how they have taken it forward into their careers, especially during recent Covid times. The role-clarity there was on the team, the flexibility in the approach they adopted, putting people first, and the other traits they had as a team that helped them achieve their goal. Super Randonneur, Bharat Pannu, was the first Indian to successfully complete any Ultra race in India of a distance longer than 400 miles in the 1st edition of Inspire India's 1,000 km Ultra Spice Race (and he later went on to win the 1,750 km category in 2019). Bharat also completed the 2017 Race Around Austria (RAA) in a 2-man team, becoming the first Indians to successfully finish any ultra race in Europe. Then after a last minute injury prevented Bharat from making it to the starting line of his 2019 Race Across America (RAAM) attempt, he went on to set the world record traversing India from North to South, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, a distance of 3,604 km in 8d 9h 45m. Still on Bharat's bucket list: London-Edinburgh-London (LEL), Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur (PBP), and of course, RAAM. Let's roll!
In this episode, we introduce Brian Welsh, an endurance sports Coach, an athlete, a husband and passionate about sport. With many years of experience, Brian shares with us some of his adventures when racing and coaching athletes for ultra-distance cycling events such as Race Across America (RAAM) or Race Around Ireland where the mindset is more or as important as your fitness.
We talk with a legendary rider of the Race Across America (RAAM) and the sport of ultra cycling, the great Valerio Zamboni from Italy currently resides in Monaco and has won the Ultra Cycling World Cup 6 times, which is just incredible considering he is over 60 years old! Valerio entered ultra cycling late in his life after being a mountaineer in his youth and then suffered a major injury. He fractured many bones and even required an artificial hip. Instead of only riding his bike for rehab, he really got serious as an ultra racer. Valerio's top results include 7 finishes at RAAM and Race Across Italy, 8 finishes at Race Around Ireland, and several World Records in the age categories of 50+ and 60+. While others think about retirement, Valerio is a man who really loves the sport, never gets tired, and always looks forward to his next challenges. Let's roll!

On today’s episode, Kelly Palace and Maria Parker talk about achieving big things with small, actionable steps. Kelly shares her breast cancer experience and how the task of emptying her parents’ home to send her father to assisted living, before her mother passed away, was overwhelming but she approached both with baby steps along the way. Maria talks about competing in the Race Across America bike race. She had to have a “baby steps” mentality to succeed and tells her mailboxes story. Embracing the grace is another tactic the hosts discuss that can be a useful tool in reaching goals and overcoming challenges. Subscribe to the Champion's Mojo podcast on iTunes, Spotify YouTube and Google Play. Leave us a review, too! If you subscribe on YouTube you could win one of our monthly prizes. The Race Across America (RAAM) is an iconic bike race that stretches over 3000 miles from California to Maryland. Along the way, cyclists pass through historic landmarks while also traveling through deserts and mountain ranges. Maria Parker owns the 50-59 Recumbent course record, completing the journey in 11 days, 20 hours and 54 minutes in 2013. She was also named the Female Rookie of the Year in 2013. Action Items From the Hosts Maria: Think to yourself “What is the very next thing that I should do/can do – and then do it – and celebrate it.” Kelly: Write down what would give you a victory. Put one achievable goal a day for three days. Sabine Bird is an endurance cyclist who is the 24 hour Road Race World Champion .... breaking the world record at the same time for the most distance covered in the 24 hour race period. She is now preparing for the Race Across America (RAAM), an ultra endurance cycling event of some 5,000km across the USA. How would you deal with zero sleep? How long can you stay in the saddle for? How about 22 hours a day? Sabine talks fitness v toughness and how she segregates and deals with (& even embraces!) pain. She talks training regimes, race nutrition and keeping 'busy' on the bike and in her head. Sabine also talks about her other passion- her research on Alzheimers. And modestly, Sabine says all she does is pedal a bike! What an understatement! One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different results. This definition is a perfect description for how many people approach fitness, they do the same workout repeatedly yet want it to produce a different outcome. Pushing yourself to try a new physical challenge is one way to break out of a routine with an exercise program that can deliver results. On this episode of All About Fitness guest Alex Isaly talks about his recent participation in the Race Across America (RAAM) and how training for endurance events can help you push past your limits. Alex is a personal trainer and fitness instructor who teaches group programs for Life Time Fitness and travels the country certifying fitness instructors in Spartan Strong, the group fitness program developed to help people prepare to complete a Spartan Race. Despite his busy work and travel schedule Alex still makes his own fitness a priority and finds time to train for grueling endurance events. Dr.Tom Seabourne, professor at Northeast Texas Community College, is successful at what many people would consider "extreme activities". From the Race Across America (RAAM), an ultra marathon bicycle race across the United States, to breaking the Guinness World Record for indoor cycling, Tom succeeded at it all. Tom is also a failure. And in his new book, "Glitches into Gold: Live like a Champion" his story is about overcoming these heartbreaking, ego smashing, and health frightening events. He joins us to share his story and to talk to us about his love for cycling.
Brad catches up with Guinness World Record holding ultra-endurance athlete Tom Seabourne, a professor of Exercise Physiology at Northeast Texas Community College who has pushed the limits of human endurance with numerous finishes in what Outside magazine calls the toughest athletic event in the world: The non-stop solo bicycle Race Across America (RAAM). Tom and Brad reminisce about the old days where Tom was on the cheapest crew in the history of the race, while Brad was part of Johnny G’s most expensive crew in the history of the race. Tom was 103 miles from the finish line at 3,000 miles when he was eliminated on time. Heartbreak, but it got him “addicted” to the event, which he went on to finish several times. Cycling over 300 miles for 22 hours a day is pretty tough, but Tom’s crew follies were epic. Once, his team lost him in the California desert soon after the start. Another time his relay team members bailed in Utah! Tom also set a Guinness World record for the longest stationary bike ride of 185 hours - over 7 days (watching The Office re-runs helped pass the time)! The record performance, notwithstanding the “urine explosion” incident, that you have to hear to believe. As a “horrible carb addict” during his ultramarathon cycling days, Tom actually developed Type 1.5 diabetes (fasting glucose 450!) despite being at 5% body fat. He also developed atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, which are now becoming commonplace maladies among extreme endurance athletes. Learn what’s happening in the mind of an ultra king during these long efforts, which Tom describes as a flow-like experience. Brad welcomes Tom Seabourne who is doing amazing athletic exploits while battling various health conditions. [00:00:16] What is the Race Across America (RAAM)? What was Tom's experience? [00:01:45] How did Tom's plantar fasciitis get cured? [00:08:28] What is entailed in being on the crew for this race? [00:09:45] Never try something without having the training or having sponsors for it! [00:16:26] He had a history of horrible eating. [00:20:53] What about calories in and calories out? [00:23:35] What happened when Tom did the record-setting ride on the Spinner bike? [00:25:01] Tom talks about his atrial fibrillation. [00:31:35] Has Tom changed his approach to training since the heart problems? Is he addicted? [00:35:33] Does Brad think about going back to the triathlon? [00:39:07] Is something special about the sort of meditative experience we have when riding? [00:40:57] What is a Type 1.5 diabetic? How is he handling it? What is the difference between Type 1 and 2? [00:53:27] What is the ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation? Don't wait too long to take care of yourself. We are excited to bring you the recording of a live panel following the showing of the film The Ataxian, which is the movie both of us are featured in! You probably know about the movie by now- it focuses on our team's journey in Race Across America (RAAM), the world's toughest cycling event, trekking 3,000 miles from CA to MD. This movie serves as a vehicle which introduces viewers to the FA (Friedreich’s Ataxia) community. The documentary screening was the kick-off event for Rare Disease Week on Capitol Hill, a gathering of Americans passionate about the issues facing one in ten Americans, those diagnosed with rare diseases. Each year, the Everylife Foundation arranges a week-long event for participants throughout the country to gather in Washington D.C. and learn about federal legislative issues, meet other advocates and dialogue directly with legislators. This annual event is held around Rare Disease Day, February 28. Rare Disease Week includes an exhibit by artists with rare diseases, a symposium of current efforts and information about rare diseases, a day spent lobbying Congressional representatives, and a documentary-screening of a rare disease. This year, The Ataxian was shown as the featured documentary. This episode is a recording of the panel after the movie screened. It is a mash-up of many contributors in attendance of the screening and Q&A discussion! Along with the Two Dudes, on the panel we had Dr. Angel Martin, FARA Research Program Director, and Tom Hamilton, Executive Producer of the film and a 2DD guest on episode 024. We also hear from Ron Bartek, co-founder and President of FARA, who was featured on episodes 009 & 011. Join us as we dive into the movie and patient advocacy. The film is available on video platforms now. So if you haven’t seen it yet, click your preferred platform here: iTunes • Amazon • GooglePlay

Jack Chen, Daniel Berlin, Tina Ament and Micheal Somsan are putting together the first All-Blind Stoker team for the epic endurance bike race in the world, the “Race Across America,” (RAAM). The RAAM is a non-stop race from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast on a Tandem bike and the logistics and preparations are well underway. Listen to Jack, Tina and Daniel talk about putting the Team together and all that goes into such an epic endurance event. Jack is a Google lawyer, Tina is a US Attorney in DC and Daniel is a co-founder of a major company producing Vanilla extract. Besides their business success they all train and seek out challenges that are out of this world. From Kilimanjaro, to Ironman races, ultra marathons and mountain climbing on a tandem, the RAAM was just waiting for them, I guess, just because it was there. Join Jeff Thompson from the Blind Abilities Podcast team as Jack, Dan and Tina invite you all to share their event and spread the word about Success in Plain Sight. You can read below and to learn more check out Team Sea To See on the web And follow the Team Sea To See on Facebook. (from the web) Team Sea to See is committed to proving that blind people can succeed in any field. We believe that demonstrating this capacity to succeed is critical to empowering others in the blind community and changing society’s perceptions of the blind. We are illustrating this capability by building a team of blind people to tackle RAAM and an accompanying media and outreach campaign. We believe that lack of exposure to and understanding of blindness plays a major role in keeping employment rates so low for the blind community. Employers aren’t intrinsically hostile to the blind; they just don’t understand how blind people can, through ingenuity and adaptive technology, enjoy the same success as their sighted colleagues. We’re taking on the high-profile challenge of the Race Across America to show what blind success looks like, on and off the bike. We are a team of successful businesspeople and athletes who share blindness as a common characteristic. We’re entering the world’s most grueling endurance cycling race, the 2018 Race Across America (RAAM), to show the immense capabilities of blind people and to raise awareness of the abysmal employment rates of the blind. We will be highlighting our achievements through a major media campaign and a full-length documentary. And we need your help. Your tax-deductible gift can help us shed light on the unacceptable employment rates for blind people across the nation and bring the inspiring stories of our team members into plain view. By supporting Team Sea to See, you will interact with an international audience through conventional and social media, showing your support of diversity and inclusion and helping to change the way the world sees the blind. For two weeks in June Sarah Cooper, the top female finisher in the 2017 Race Across America (RAAM), rode her bike across the country with the help of dedicated crew members -- good friends and fellow bicyclists -- trailing her close behind in a van or SUV. We sit down for a round-table interview with two of those crew members and Sarah to reflect on their incredible, grueling RAAM experience and why its a bicycle race they will do only once.
Kyle's Dad, Mike Bryant joins us to talk about Team FARA in Race Across America and what it took to get the team safely across the country in "The World's Toughest Bike Race." And Kyle tells a short story about being held hostage by a cat. Held hostage by a cat. Hear the story on a new episode out tomorrow! Plus we interview Kyle's Dad about being crew chief for Race Across America. A post shared by Two Disabled Dudes Podcast (@2ddpodcast) on May 7, 2017 at 12:52pm PDT We never know what we are truly capable of until we find ourselves in a tough situation, when success is the only option. In January of 2010, Kyle, Sean, and Kyle’s parents attended a crew seminar on the “world’s toughest bike race”, Race Across America (RAAM) - non-stop along a set route across the country. They needed a full team and other riders, training, navigators, bike and trike maintenance, etc. The only motivation they had was a blog post, in which Kyle promised to himself and others that he would participate in the RAAM to raise awareness for FA. Nothing else. At a restaurant table after the seminar, the four looked at each other blankly. What did we get ourselves into? Instead of getting overwhelmed by the huge challenge ahead of them, the team made its first decision: they made Mike Bryant the crew chief of their team. In addition to being the first and maybe most vital member of Team FARA in the RAAM, Mike is (un?)fortunate enough to be Kyle’s father. He accompanies his son on almost all of Kyle’s big adventures. Despite the huge step out of his comfort zone, he agreed to tackle this huge new obstacle. That perseverance, it seems, defines the life of those who face a disability and their families. A huge and seemingly insurmountable challenge lies ahead. We are overwhelmed and overcome with fear and sadness. But it is perseverance that defines us- not letting the overwhelming scariness cripple us. And living in the uncertainty of how to tackle this giant obstacle gives us strength if we allow it. Ultimately, when facing an unknown and scary situation, we can either run away from it or we can persevere. Mike continually chooses to overcome, in being a part of RAAM and in always supporting Kyle. The choice of how to react to big and scary situations is for each individual to make. Choose to persevere.
Sarah Cooper, a relentless cyclist from Urbandale, Iowa, doesn't know where her drive comes from. "I need to do this," she says, "and I will think about why later.” Cooper, 45, is one of the best ultra-distance cyclists in the country. The mother of four kids, ages 12 to 16, trains almost exclusively on gravel back roads. "I train on that and have not had any trouble with a mountain," she says. Her training will be put to the test at the end of July as she competes in the 3,000-mile Race Across America (RAAM). We also hear from Craig hite with Main Street Lansing about hosting RAGBRAI as the ending town on the Mississippi River and another segment of ParrotTalk with Andrea Parrott.
If you think you've done a long bike ride, think again. Julie-Anne was one of the Veloroos, a team of four extraordinary Australian women who not only finished, but actually won the Race Across America (RAAM).RAAM is a near-on 5,000 km race from one side of the USA to the other, Julie-Anne talks to us about the experience.

Racing to Cure Diabetes...Phil Southerland, co-founder of Team Type 1, which was created in 2004 to inspire people living with Diabetes to take a proactive approach to managing their health and overcoming the obstacles often associated with the condition. For the better part of his lifetime, Phil Southerland has made a habit of defying the odds. When he was seven months old, he came down with what doctors first diagnosed as a routine case of baby flu. But after losing more than half of his body weight to the illness, his mother Joanna suspected something far more serious was wrong.Violently ill and with perhaps only days to live, doctors diagnosed Southerland with Juvenile Diabetes. They told his mother that the condition would likely cost him his eyesight by the time he was 20.Those doctors should see him now.Only 26 years old, Southerland already counts among his achievements the founding of Team Type 1 – the world’s first professional cycling team dedicated to raising awareness for Type 1 Diabetes – and a pair of victories for the team in the Race Across America (RAAM). His accomplishments and desire to help others with Diabetes have led to dozens of national engagements as a motivational speaker.Cycling is his first love, though. A competitor since the age of 13, he co-founded Team Type 1 in 2005 with Joe Eldridge after the two met while racing against each other in college.
