On Saturday, November 2, 2024 15-year-old Tripp Brazeale headed out of his house in Forrest City, Arkansas on a four-wheeler. After dark and into the early morning hours of Sunday November 3, Tripp, two family members, and a friend were hanging out in a part of the woods called Crow Creek, riding ATVs. Now it’s mostly illegal to ride four-wheelers on paved roads in Arkansas and in many other places, but out there in the country, it’s a common mode of transportation for teens. There were police officers nearby that night. Deputy Trey Bynum and Sgt. David Kinney from the St. Francis County Sheriff’s Office were responding to a call regarding with a missing girl and boy from Cross County. Deputy Bynum wrote in his report that while they were checking out a residence in the woods, they heard ATVs driving around erratically. When they finished up and got back into their vehicles, Sgt. Kinney went to go find them. He was the first one to make contact; he was talking to the people on one of the four-wheelers, basically telling everyone to slow down. As Deputy Bynum approached, he saw one of the four-wheelers slow down like he was about to stop but then, he said, take off and pass him at “a high rate of speed.” The driver of that ATV was Tripp Brazeale. At that point Deputy Bynum started his pursuit, trying to pull Tripp over. The high speed chase went on up a hill and back down a hill, and that’s when something happened...something that caused Tripp to abruptly stop and jump off his four wheeler at 12:42 AM and run into the woods. He didn't come back after Deputy Bynum called after him. He fled into the woods and kept running. And then, he disappeared. A warning to listeners: The following conversation references suicide, suicidality, and content that is inappropriate for young listeners. Even before the pandemic, there was an increasing awareness of the decline in mental health of children and young adults. Researchers and scientists have talked and written about rising levels of anxiety in today’s youth, and many have pointed to the pervasiveness of smartphones and social media, which have exponentially magnified concerns for the mental well being of a generation. Andrew Solomon, writer and professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University Medical Center, recently penned an article for The New Yorker titled “Has Social Media Fuelled a Teen-Suicide Crisis? ” In his piece, Soloman investigates what’s fuelling the the spike in suicide among Americans between the ages of ten and twenty-four. Quoting the work of Dr. Judith Edersheim at Harvard, Solomon says: “It’s like taking little children and putting them in an all night casino where they serve chocolate flavored bourbon. It's designed to be addictive, it is addictive and that addiction has devastating consequences.” Solomon interviews dozens of parents and shares the poignant and heart wrenching accounts of how so many of them were totally unaware of the online world in which their children were living. As one father who had lost his son to suicide explained to Solomon, “I was, I thought, such a good father. I checked around the house every night. I locked the doors. I made sure my children were safe. I didn't know that the lion was already inside the house.” Solomon further explains that this all has so much to do with the insidious nature of the algorithms, which feed not on vulnerabilities, but bring about a sense of normalization. If a kid looks at content about being a little depressed, Solomon tells us that “then they start showing you people who are more depressed. “They want to hook you,” he continues, “what they send you has to gradually become more extreme and eventually you escalate to people who are killing themselves on camera and posting it on social media platforms while they are doing it.” Parents, educators and lawmakers are working hard to bring attention to this; some argue that social media is only “only one layer” in the crisis. Lawsuits have made their way to the Supreme Court but so far, Solomon informs us: “The Supreme Court has refused to overturn Section 230. The legislative work that was supposed to have an effect on placing constraints on the operations of social media companies, have all got stuck in committee, despite the ‘bipartisan agreement that there need to be restraints.’” Solomon advises parents to educate themselves and talk to their kids, though inevitably the younger generation who has grown up with technology is going to be ahead of the game. “The idea of being able to monitor all of what your children are doing is a ludicrous fantasy,” Solomon admits. “So I think that's all not very effective, but you can at least be aware and talk to your children.” Delve deeper into life, philosophy, and what makes us human by joining the Life Examined discussion group on Facebook.

The latest research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding our kids and suicides are quite alarming. With mental health issues like anxiety and depression on the rise among our kids, it should come as no surprise that more and more kids are opting to choose the darkness of self-inflicted death, over a life which to them seems inescapably darker. Since the start of the covid pandemic in 2020, the suicide rate by firearm among children and teens ages one to eighteen had risen by eleven percent. Parents, we need to teach our kids that on several occasions Jesus told his followers they could expect pain and persecution. The Psalms are full of the moans and laments of human suffering and emotional misery. But all of God's Word points to the fact that God does not leave us alone in times of trouble. In Psalm forty-six one we read these words of truth and comfort: “God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble.” Teach your kids to lean into the hope of the Gospel.
On this week's episode, we had the honor of sitting down with Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, MD, MBA to discuss why people are so lonely, how social media is impacting the youth, and discuss the horrifying rise in suicide rates amongst teens. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Suicide has quickly become a rampant epidemic across our country and world today, especially in the lives of our youth and adolescents. Clearly, we need more suicide awareness and prevention measures as well as opportunities to be better equipped to meet the needs of today's generations like never before! Thankfully in today's episode we will be discussing a brand new movie that will provide opportunities just like those. Joining us today on the podcast is a 2x Emmy Award Winning Filmmaker and Director, Kyle Roberts. In and throughout today's conversation, Kyle will be unpacking his brand new movie, What Rhymes With Reason, which will be releasing October 10th - World Mental Health Day! This movie involves movie involves a tragedy which ignites a group of teens to go on a quest to find a legendary landmark hidden in the wilderness. Together, they navigate the adventure while confronting the darkness within themselves. Kyle was called to the mission of developing a film that was family friendly yet still highlighting some of the challenges that our youth and adolescents are facing such as anxiety, depression, identity development, and even conversations and thoughts of suicide. However, Kyle's heart, and what you see in the culmination of the film is that he wants every young person to walk away feeling seen, heard, not alone, and understanding that they were created by God, on purpose, and for a purpose! That's his heart and you'll hear all throughout today's conversation about the little details that God orchestrated, and how His fingerprints have been all over the preparation and production of this film! And what I love about this movie is that it provides and sparks an incredible opportunity for so many families to be able to have some difficult yet imperative conversations together! So again I challenge you to not just listen to today's episode and hear an inspiring story on the background of an incredible new movie that I believe we need for such a time as this, but I challenge you to actually do something with that by taking your friends and families to pack the movie theaters out on October 10th to go and see Kyle's brand new movie, What Rhymes With Reason! A feature of life in Colorado is the prevalence of pot. There are dispensaries on virtually every corner, and everywhere I travel I hear a pot joke. Something else my adopted state is becoming known for is the harmful aftereffects of legalized marijuana. According to state statistics, the drug was found in the system of some 42% of teen suicides, a rate nearly twice as much as with alcohol and four times of any other substances. Of course, correlation doesn't mean causation, but it can mean connection. If nearly half of stroke victims were taking the same medicine, would we wonder if there was a link? Why the reluctance to connect the dots here? Marijuana might not cause suicide, but numbers don't lie. It encourages or exacerbates problems that lead down that deadly road, especially for a group at high risk. The link is there for those willing to see it. Since suicide rates have risen every year that it has been legal, we're far past giving the benefit of the doubt.

Social media was humanity's ‘first contact' moment with AI. If we're going to create laws that are strong enough to prevent AI from destroying our societies, we could benefit from taking a look at the major lawsuits against social media platforms that are playing out in our courts right now.In our last episode, we took a close look at Big Food and its dangerous “race to the bottom” that parallels AI. We continue that theme this week with an episode about litigating social media and the consequences of the race to engagement in order to inform how we can approach AI harms. Our guest, attorney Laura Marquez-Garrett, left her predominantly defense-oriented practice to join the Social Media Victims Law Center in February 2022. Laura is literally on the front lines of the battle to hold social media firms accountable for the harms they have created in young people's lives for the past decade. I think we can all agree that when we were kids, things were much different than they are today. Most of us probably spent our days racing our bikes, building forts, and chasing frogs around the pond. The fact is, our kids are growing up in the middle of a raging mental health crisis. It's no wonder why anxiety and depression are on the rise among teenagers with all the pressure to succeed or be popular with unrealistic expectations fueled by social media, or worse, by their parents. I'm thrilled to have Jason Reid with me today for another conversation on this important topic. Jason is a partner at CEO Coaching International, where he coaches top executives on achieving success. Tragically, after losing his 14-year-old son to suicide in 2018, Jason's focus shifted to helping other families navigate the complex world of mental health. He founded TellMyStory.org, a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers parents to support their children through mental health challenges. Jason's mission is nothing short of inspiring - to end teen suicide by 2030. In our conversation, you'll learn: The telltale signs that your child is grappling with depression and anxiety. Parenting strategies for helping kids deal with their mental health struggles. Why institutions are dropping the ball when it comes to tackling the mental health crisis. Some of my favorite moments of the conversation: How the media is exacerbating our kids' insecurities. The tragedy that transformed Jason into a leading mental health advocate. Empowering our kids to become “mental health athletes.” What kids wish their parents knew about their struggles. The dangers of employing authoritarian tactics on your kids. How to talk to your children so they feel understood and safe to be vulnerable. How to tell if your child is going through a mental health crisis - and what to do about it. Lil Wayne grew up on the mean streets of New Orleans. His father split when he was two, and his stepdad was shot before he was a teenager. Wayne poured his pain into his rhymes and started cutting tracks for Cash Money Records, seeing hip-hop as the only way out of a violent scene. When his mother forced him to quit rapping, the only way out Wayne saw was suicide. Miraculously, he survived and went on to become one of the most successful artists of all-time, staying true to his roots throughout all his triumphs and tribulations.
