Guys Of A Certain Age

It's Doomsday for the Guys this week! But Robbie and Art decided to do a podcast anyway. Geeks of the Week include rumors of a David Ayer director's cut of Suicide Squad. This is the first one with Will Smith. Could a Chris Rock scene be included? Netflix looking at a live action series of a Scooby Doo origin story. Ruh-roh. On a serious note, there's an update on beloved poster artist Drew Struzan's health. As the final geek, we look at Apple using a Lumen-Terminal-Pro to tout the use of their hardware in editing Severance. However, they didn't use Apple's software, so it may also be Terminal-Pro.    Our main segment recaps the list of Marvel stars added to the roster of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. The list of who didn't is as interesting as who made the cut, and we talk about both. We didn't do the recap in a 5-hour live stream as the names were originally revealed. It only feels that way.

This week, we dedicate our episode to the legendary Drew Struzan, the iconic artist behind some of the most memorable movie posters of all time. Struzan, whose work defined the visual identity of films like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future, can no longer create due to his battle with Alzheimer's. Jeff and Sean take a moment to celebrate his legacy, discuss the documentary Drew: The Man Behind the Poster, and make the case for why real, human-created art needs to be protected. You can meet Dee at our Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics panel at San Diego Comic-Con, and he will also be signing on July 29 during the Virtual Cantina tour at Scum & Villainy in Hollywood.     We planned on having Dee on the same show as our ACOLYTE breakdown with Mike Celestino (Laughing Place / Who's The Bossk) but there was so much to each part that we separated them and our full breakdown will come out in just a few days. Stay tuned!   Today in Star Wars History - 7/21/1978   Due to its overwhelming popularity, the theatrical run for Star Wars extends another seven weeks. Although some may call this a re-release, however it was never pulled from theaters. Fun Facts:   A new poster is created for this extended release featuring artwork by Charlie White III and Drew Struzan.                               A monaural audio mix with extra lines of dialogue and sound effects was included in these additional prints. Extra dialogue includes C-3PO's line about cutting the Death Star's tractor beam to allow the Millennium Falcon to leave, and the Stormtrooper shouting to “Close the blast doors,” while chasing Han Solo and Chewbacca through the Death Star corridors. Before this we only heard “Open the blast doors!”    The number of film prints totals 1,756 for this release which is an industry record. 300 more prints is added the next week which is the first time a film played in more than 2,000 theaters.    Because of a clause in their contract, the only theater to continue playing Star Wars following the seven week extension is the Westgate Theater outside of Portland, Oregon.

Matthew Therrien: Meet The Creative Mind Behind Some of Horror's Most Iconic Movie Artwork There are few things in popular culture more iconic than the movie poster. Movie posters have become more than just a way to advertise the titular film, but a form of art all their own. Think of some of your favorite horror movie posters and chances are some of them aren't even for your favorite films. Whether it's Stephen Frankfurt's chilling poster for Rosemary's Baby or Drew Struzan's classic for John Carpenter's The Thing, the posters for these movies have become as integral in popular culture as the films themselves. The 90's saw a glut of photoshopped movie star face posters, and for a while it looked like the art of the movie poster had lost out to the marketing departments. Boy has that changed! The horror movie poster is back and it's back with a vengeance. The last two decades have seen the rise of the more painterly quality of the classic posters and the decline of the photoshop floating heads - though occasionally terrible photoshop posters have their own merits! There are many great artists leading the charge, and in today's episode SYG host Kevin Lane is joined by the virtuosic Matthew Therrien. From his stunning new takes on classic films like Halloween and Friday the 13th, to his beloved poster for Psycho Goreman, Matthew doesn't stop. He's a tireless creating machine, and when you look at the quality of the work he's doing, it's hard to imagine when he has time to do things like sleep or eat or watch movies. Once you get to know Matthew and find that he's also a devoted family man and a caring friend, well how can you not be cheering for this guy? One of the genre's most talented artists also happens to be one it's loveliest people.Matthew and Kevin talk about his influences, his technique and how to decide what to distill about a movie when creating a poster. You may recognize Matthew's work from other segments on the show and Matthew himself, as he has had other guest appearances on SYG. This interview was how Matthew and Kevin got to know each other, and since then they have become friends and collaborators. We hope you enjoy getting to know him as well as we have. Well no doubt you're already surrounded by some of your favorite horror posters, so let's get into the art of getting spines to tingle and gooses to bump using a paintbrush with Matthew Therrien.Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. THE THING is John Carpenter's 1982 horror masterpiece, combining a simple but sensational premise with some of the most incredible special effects ever devised from legendary prosthetic makeup designer Rob Bottin.  Crash landing on earth over 100,000 years ago, an unknowable alien entity has lain dormant in Antarctica until unfrozen by a doomed scientific team. It's unique ability is to precisely mimic any life it comes in contact with and this ingeniously paranoid idea sees the audience in the same predicament as our hero MacReady (Kurt Russell, THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES); not knowing which of our excellent ensemble cast might be the cosmic abomination until their face splits open to reveal some grotesque transgressive horror. As tension mounts and the team start to fracture, scenes of almost unimaginable awfulness unfold from a terror truly beyond human understanding and the ambiguous downbeat ending is an all-time classic. Tune in to hear us discuss Ennio Morricone's Razzie nominated score, gather tips on how to spot which characters might be The Thing and unpack the unsettling existential implications of its terrifying central conceit. The iconic poster was conceptualised, painted and delivered to the studio in less than 24 hours by the wonderful film poster artist Drew Struzan and a copy of his artwork hangs on my office wall so if you can't tell already I'm a bit of a fan of this one.

Joining William will be his co-author and illustrator Charles Ricciardi. William and Charles are here to discuss the important lessons at the heart of their new, colorfully illustrated, children's book, Immigrant, American, Survivor - A Little Boy Who Grew up to be All Three. The story documents the experiences of retired Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Officer, William Jimeno. As a first responder at the World Trade Center when the Twin Towers fell on 9/11, William was trapped under the rubble for thirteen hours. Readers of Immigrant, American, Survivor follow a young Jimeno, who immigrates with his family to America and his New Jersey home, not far from the alluring New York City skyline. “My mother was always telling me,” shares Jimeno, “take pride in your Colombian roots, follow your dreams, and never, ever give up. I kept that with me my whole life.” The illustrated book guides readers through some of Jimeno's relatable ups and downs, from his childhood days, to his journey to becoming a police officer, to his recovery and his reflection upon his own experiences on September 11, 2001.As the twentieth anniversary of 9/11 draws closer, Immigrant, American, Survivor pays important tribute to the many heroes on that day for a new audience of young readers who may not be familiar with the story. The book addresses 9/11 in a tasteful and gentle manner, highlighting the importance of honoring those we lost.About the authors:William Jimeno has co-authored another book due for release August of 2021 titled, Sunrise Through the Darkness. In this book, written for adults, Will shares the challenges he experienced as a first responder dealing with PTSD, and learning how to live again.Charles Ricciardi has written and illustrated two other children's books, The Night The Bullies Were Bullied! and I'll Do My Homework…But First!, exploring the topics of bullying and procrastination. He has also written a novel about a dramatic footrace along the entire Appalachian Trail, The Great Appalachian Trail Race. All are available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble. Charles has also created five independent feature films, including the award-winning documentary, Drew: The Man Behind The Poster, a film about artist Drew Struzan, creator of the Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and Star Wars movie posters. It's sometimes wholesome, sometimes dark, but regularly messy and frustrating... Particularly for one of us! Which one? Well, you'll have to listen to find out. If you've been in a movie theater within the past 15 years, chances are you've walked by this man's art. Paul Shipper is one of the most sought after movie poster artists in the world. Search his name on google & some of the most instantly-recognizable images from films will pop up. Movies such as Star Wars, Avengers, Indiana Jones, Ready Player One... the list goes on and continues to grow. Continuing in the tradition of artists such as Drew Struzan, Norman Rockwell, and JC Leyndecker before him, Paul Shipper creates art that is somehow both photo-realistic and fantastical in how it's received. Here, he talks about his formative years as an artist, his process, and how he approaches client work. He also gives us a quick tour of his studio (which you can see in the video version of this episode).

Frank Darabont wanted to adapt Stephen King’s novella “The Mist” as his directorial debut, but obviously that didn’t happen. It took him 13 years and three feature films, not to mention all the TV writing he was involved in, before he’d finally get around to adapting the story and making the film. What’s great about it is that he went dark with the story and took the original story even further than King took it. It worked for some people but not that well for others who found it far too bleak. Still, it’s found its audience and is generally considered one of the strongest horror adaptations of Kings’ work. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Stephen King à la Darabont series, with his 2007 film The Mist. We talk about the bleak nature of the story and how well it works for us in context of what King was doing with it. We look at the color version versus the director’s preferred black-and-white version and why we both prefer the black-and-white as well. We chat about the performances, notably Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden (not to mention all the Darabont regulars) and why they work so well in their respective roles. We discuss the Lord of the Flies aspect to the humans in the story and why it fits so perfectly in this world. We chat about the creatures and why we find them so perfectly terrifying. We touch on the music and why the haunting voice of Lisa Gerrard works so well in context of this story. We debate the ending and why it works so well for us while certainly not as well for others – and how it can be interpreted in different ways. And if you’re tuning in to hear us talk about how cool it is that Darabont is such a fan of Drew Struzan’s poster art that he builds it into his lead character’s occupation, you’ll be disappointed. We completely forget to bring it up! So we’ll just mention it here. It’s a fantastically freaky film and we both love it. We had a great time talking about it on the show this week, so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins!
