In this special holiday episode of Until You Make It, Chris and Mike gather with longtime friend and visual effects artist Ryan Laux for a look back at a transformative year and a look forward into the creative landscape of 2026. From Ryan's move to full-time freelance in Los Angeles to his strategic "rise" on social media, the crew explores the delicate balance between professional polish and the "scrappy" authenticity that actually drives engagement in the creator economy. The conversation shifts from the technical to the theatrical as Chris recounts his first true Broadway experience seeing Wicked in New York, sparking a deep dive into the differences between stage spectacle and cinematic storytelling. The guys also tackle the "dumbed down" state of modern streaming, questioning if shows are now being written specifically for distracted viewers on their phones, favoring repetitive dialogue and shallow focus over nuanced "show, don't tell" artistry. Whether it's debating if Die Hard is a Christmas movie, pitching a Brendan Fraser-led "Christmas Planet" sci-fi epic, or critiquing the AI-generated "munchkins" at the Las Vegas Sphere, this episode is a blend of high-level industry insight and casual holiday shop talk. What You'll Discover: The Power of "Scrappy" Content: Why Ryan shifted from perfectionism to TikTok-style tutorials—and how it led to a 50,000-view spike and new client leads. The 2026 Freelance Blueprint: Ryan shares the realities of his first full year of independent work and the transition from studio roles to the creator economy. Wicked on Stage vs. Screen: A breakdown of vocal performances, character framing, and why some creatives struggle with the "campy" nature of musical theater. The "Distraction" Epidemic in Media: How modern cinematography and writing are evolving to accommodate viewers who are multi-tasking on mobile devices. AI and the Las Vegas Sphere: Ryan's firsthand account of watching the Wizard of Oz enhanced by AI and rebuilt CG sets—and where the technology fell short. Defining a "Christmas Movie": The crew sets strict (and not-so-strict) criteria for what qualifies as a holiday classic. 2026 Creative Goals: From finishing "the movie" by NAB to finding a better balance between business growth and personal health. If you've ever felt paralyzed by perfectionism or wondered where the line is between "content" and "art," this episode offers a transparent look at making it in the modern visual industry.

I had the wonderful pleasure and honor to talk to a living legend in the world of VFX Rick Shick. His history and catalog ranges from tv shows and movies. Just about every project he helped come to life has been a staple in our childhood to adulthood development. Forgive me if I fanboyed too much during this interview. This episode could have gone longer, it was such a great time talking and learning from a man of his craft. I hope to have him on again in the future. This is defiantly a Learning Tree episode. Enjoy.

Cheerio! Diese Folge Kino Plus wird unterstützt von EMP. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This episode's guest is Michaela Weissburg, an LA native. Mickie and I worked briefly together at a media organization in the YouTube space. After working in the field for 6 years, Michaela's experience in VFX production management has given her depth as well as breadth of knowledge. From zombies, to vampires, to aliens, to dragons, there has been no shortage of cool stuff for her to work on.And while not all of it is exciting, she takes pride in her small efforts to create a product that ends up being greater than the sum of its parts. It all starts with a story, a lot of teamwork, and a little bit of magic.
Freelance is such a big topic in visual effects! For those of you starting in the industry, you're probably wondering how to get your foot in the door. Ultimately, 2024 will be a very busy year. That means that those of you who are good should be ready to turn down work. The first thing you need to think about is how you're positioning yourself in the business: What are the special skills that you have that allow you to stand out from others? We are in a problem solving business. Positioning means that you know how to sell yourself – by providing solutions to the potential employer – as well as understand your worth. You need to be aware of what you bring to the table and how to sell yourself. (That also means that you're aware of what you're not good at, which gives you room for improvement.) You also need to understand the needs of your employer. You show that understanding by providing a reel that sums up your best work – and is very heavily catered to the specific task that the employer is looking to fill. In addition, your cover letter must mention the position you're applying for and your understanding of what the position entails. That allows you to position yourself as the go-to person for this role. In this Episode, you'll learn about: How to create a winning reel that guarantees a chance for a job interview; Where to find available work – and how to apply for those jobs; How to do successful outreach to potential employers or human resources departments; How to identify the most in-demand skills and innovate in new technology. One of the advantages of 2024 is widely available remote job opportunities. That means that you can live anywhere. By living in a cheaper area, you're able to lower your overhead and actually enjoy your lifestyle. That also means that nowadays you can work for any studio you want. Remember: It's not just about being skilled as a VFX Artist – it's about the right artist for the right job, at the right time. In this Podcast, Allan McKay gives critical insight into how to find remote work and freelance work in 2024, how to be successful at outreach to potential employers, how to create a winning reel that guarantees employment, how to work for a dream studio remotely – and so much more! Some people argue that you can't make more than $50K in VFX. Others compare their lives to the curated lifestyles on social media and demand to get paid more. It really comes down to your WHY: Why do you need more cash? The quickest pay rise you can give yourself is figuring out your budget. It's better to figure out your finances and take control of your money. And if you still want to earn more money, you need to understand the industry you're in and what it pays people. That being said, you can earn bigger numbers in VFX. If you want to earn more, you have to rethink the whole process. Recently, I was offered a Director position on a AAA game. Working in video games, you can make extra cash either in bonuses or by having a side hustle. If you were to start to think about dealing with things on a bigger level – as a studio – you can start to understand the process. As a VFX Supervisor and previously a Producer and Studio Owner, I understand budgets. When Producers create budgets, they don't have the money allocated yet. Once vendors submit their bids, Producers sit down and figure out what the budget for a project might be and the number of artists they need to hire. Then they worry about their margins, their expenditures and profit. The Producers on the client side don't scrutinize the details. All they care about – is deliverables. That allows you to rethink the process by changing the way you charge your rate. Now, you could go work at the same place your entire life. If you take that linear career trajectory, you end up waiting for a pay rise every year. If making more money is all you're after, you need to examine a few things: First of all, ask yourself if you're in the right industry? If you do want to do it in VFX, can you create a side hustle? Do you see yourself launching your own studio? Can you move from the vendor to the client side of VFX? If you want to make money by simply doing VFX, you need to get creative. I've talked about this in the past: There is no limit to how much money you can make in visual effects! Ask yourself the question: How do the people who pay me – pay themselves? Once you understand that, you can position yourself in a way that justifies the money you want to make. In this Podcast, Allan McKay busts the myth that a VFX Artist cannot make a lot of money in visual effects and gives his insight as a VFX Supervisor, Producer and Studio Owner about how you can make a lot more money in this business. For this episode, number 75, I spoke with filmmaker and optical VFX expert Peter Kuran. Peter was one of the few people employed by George Lucas on Star Wars and became a core crew member at Industrial Light and Magic. He went on to have a long career in VFX and then became a director in his own right.I should point out that we had internet problems so some of the recording is garbled or lost. I've edited around it in places and left it in in other places so you know that there was a piece missing. Apologies. We never found out if it was my connection or Peter's. I hope you enjoy the conversation.LinksReturn of the Jedi Timeline Book - Register your interest!Filmumentaries Merch!Support the Podcast on PatreonThe Man Who Shot Luke SkywalkerThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5530733/advertisement
