The Goddess of Soul, Miss Martha High, brings her timeless elegance, grace and style to a selection of platinum hits, including those she recorded with James Brown, the Godfather of Soul for over 32 years. Feet start tapping, hands clapping, and before long, everyone is dancing in their seats. Martha High is an internationally acclaimed performer, songwriter, author, vocal instructor, radio talk show host, and artist. She has released 13 albums of which she wrote and co-produced much of the material. She was discovered by The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, at the age of 18 in the mid-1960s while singing with The Four Jewels at the world famous Apollo Theater in New York. They later become The Jewels after Mr. Brown invited them to join him on the road with the James Brown Revue. Martha Harvin was renamed Martha High by Mr. Brown and later crowned her The Goddess of Soul. She has the distinction of having worked with The Godfather longer than any other singer. Darliene Parker has been the soulful voice behind Maceo Parker, former James Brown Show bandleader, since 2012, touring the world as a mainstay backing and featured vocalist. Her career highlights include performances with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, her own group, PARKER, songwriting and the release of her self-titled EP. Growing up in Ohio, Darliene was inspired by her singer mother and an encouraging father who nurtured her talent from an early age. “My father awakened the singer in me. As soon as I could talk, he taught me how to say ‘water' real low. That's how my lower register was first discovered,” she shared. Darliene's talent earned her a musical scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. Kelly Jarrell, a star vocalist with The Bittersweets, James Brown's legendary background group, hails from Augusta, Georgia, just like the Godfather of Soul himself. Kelly's sweet and sultry voice enriched Mr. Brown's iconic hits both onstage and in the studio, adding unforgettable harmonies to his most beloved songs. "It was 12 of the most exciting years of my life,” said Kelly about her time touring the globe with Mr. Dynamite. She added, “Working with Fred Wesley and his band, who often accompany the Funky Divas (Check Official Calendar for Confirmation) and paying homage to the real Funky Divas is another dream come true!”

Lynn Whitfield is an award-winning and internationally recognized actress with a career spanning decades. Her incredible artistry has consistently championed the experiences of complicated and powerful women whose stories deserved to be told with the depth and care that only Lynn could provide. Grace Gibson is a Rock 'n' Roll artist forging her own distinct path in the music industry. Grace has had the privilege of gracing stages at Paisley Park and the Apollo Theater with her incredible voice and unique approach to rock. During our conversation, we discussed what it was like for both women to grow up in a family with such strong beauty and creative aesthetic sensibilities. And how they have relied on each other in their pursuit of greatness in their respective careers.Lynn detailed how her mother and aunts provided her earliest expressions of beauty in Louisiana. We learned about how attending Howard University and being exposed to the Black art scene upended her initially conservative approach to self-expression, and how it challenged what her mother had taught her. Of course, Grace details what it was like to grow up with a mother who is well known for being glamorous, on and offscreen. The pair offered a beautiful look inside their relationship and how they have cultivated a friendship that many mothers and daughters would love to have. In fact, Lynn gushes when she explains that having Grace inspired a more ambitious approach to her personal and professional pursuits. As an ambitious working mother, Lynn talked about the women who modeled the mother-daughter relationship she could have as a successful actress. Grace credits Lynn with showing her the result of true artistic commitment and demanding that she pursue her artistic dream with complete seriousness. Grace and Lynn offer a beautiful example of what it means to lead by creative example and live a life filled with love.Tune in as we discuss:(5:35) Lynn and Grace's Introduction To Beauty(13:45) Lynn's Experience In A Freshly Integrated High School (33:35) Behind The Scenes of The Josephine Baker Story Filming (40:55) Why Grace Didn't Watch The Josephine Baker Story Until College(43:55) Lynn's Parents Weren't Supportive of Her Creative Careers, Despite Inspiring It(55:15) Why They Are Best Friends(57:20) On Being A Busy Working Mother (58:45) How Josephine Premice and Her Daughter Susan Fales-Hill Supported Her(1:05:00) Helping Your Children Understand Their Mixed-Race Identity(1:06:20) How Lynn's Radical Honesty and Work Ethic Inspire Grace(1:11:45) Their Favorite Beauty Products and Services(1:20:00) When They Feel The Most BeautifulRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on AppleJoin the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanetShop My Favorite Products & Pod Discounts on my ShopMyShelfStay in touch with me: @brookedevardFollow Lynn @mslynnwhitfieldFollow Grace @thegracegibson Hosted on Acast. Documentary producer & record collector Jeanne Elfant Festa has made films about The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Pavarotti, Bee Gees and more. Today she discusses her latest movie on Billy Preston — revealing rare archive footage, Olivia Harrison's key role, and Eric Clapton's emotional on-camera tribute and a lot more. Check outtrailer and documentary screenings here Topics Include: Jeanne lost her entire vinyl collection in the Palisades fire. Her family and animals all escaped the fire safely. A custom-built, mathematically designed sound room housed the collection. Rebuilding takes time — the turntable alone hasn't been replaced yet. Music passion began with her Brooklyn-raised parents' rich jazz collection. Her dad snuck into the Apollo Theater via the fire escape. He carried a saxophone, jamming with musicians at the loading dock. The family soundtrack: Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker. Jeanne and her dad bonded over Bruce Springsteen's sax player. Her father did house calls exclusively for one patient — Miles Davis. Storytelling instincts came from parents who loved plays, movies, and performance. Her own record collection ranged from Rage Against the Machine to Supertramp. Vinyl's tactile magic: liner notes, textures, and each album's unique smell. Albums are movies — side one plays straight through, no skipping. Documentary filmmaking is passion-driven, not a path to big money. The Foo Fighters doc came from being in the right place. Business partner Nigel Sinclair's credits include Bob Dylan and George Harrison docs. Billy Preston first entered her life through her parents' living room stereo. Filming subjects who've passed requires diaries, archives, and extraordinary research teams. A granddaughter's undeveloped home movies transformed the Beach Boys documentary entirely. A stranger's undeveloped Beatles footage, found under a childhood bed, changed everything. Olivia Harrison unlocked archive footage and connected the team to Ringo and Clapton. Eric Clapton opened up in a way rarely seen on camera. Documentary ethics: three sources minimum, no gossip, no stunt casting ever. The Billy Preston film explores forgiveness, contradiction, and the full human condition. From the Apollo Theater to international charts… from behind-the-scenes publishing deals to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recognition… this is the story of the architect behind the anthem. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to introduce the next film to the reviewed, "Soul Men." The 2008 film follows two estranged soul-singing legends who agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and the late great Bernie Mac. Available to stream for free on Tubi. The random topic this week we tackle the complex and difficult incident that unfolded at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards when John Davidson, a Tourette's syndrome activist and subject of the nominated film "I Swear," involuntarily shouted racial slurs—including the N-word—while Black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented an award. This isn't a simple story. It's a collision of disability rights, anti-Black racism, media responsibility, and institutional failure. What happened: Davidson, who has spent decades advocating for Tourette's awareness, experienced involuntary vocal tics throughout the ceremony. His condition causes coprolalia—the uncontrollable utterance of socially inappropriate words. When Jordan and Lindo took the stage, Davidson's tic produced the N-word, audible throughout the venue. The BBC's failure: Despite broadcasting on a two-hour delay (giving them time to edit), the BBC left the slur in the broadcast AND on iPlayer for 15+ hours. Yet they DID edit out other content, including a "Free Palestine" statement and political jokes. The selective editing reveals a catastrophic failure/purposeful behavior in judgment and priorities. The complications: This incident sits at the painful intersection of two marginalized communities. Davidson has no control over his tics—they represent the opposite of his actual beliefs. Yet Black attendees, including production designer Hannah Beachler, experienced real racial trauma. Lindo told Vanity Fair he wished BAFTA had spoken to them afterward. Host Alan Cumming's apology said "sorry if you were offended" was woefully inadequate. Why this matters for cinema: The film "I Swear" was nominated for multiple BAFTAs and won three awards, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo's portrayal of Davidson. The movie exists to educate about Tourette's. Yet BAFTA and the BBC failed both the disability community AND the Black community in how they handled this moment. We discuss:- The impossible position both communities were put in due to the BBC's actions or lack thereof- Why institutional preparation and response failed catastrophically- The difference between individual accountability and systemic responsibility- How ableism and anti-Black racism played out in the aftermath (including the idea of "he meant that shit" comments)- What should have happened vs. what did happen- The broader conversation about representation, disability, and whose comfort gets prioritizedThis is a conversation about nuance, compassion, and holding institutions accountable when they fail vulnerable communities.Full Black on Black Cinema episodes coming soon. Nia Hill is an accomplished actress, entertainment executive, producer, and master of reinvention. Like many of us, her earliest attempts at reinvention happened after she started a new school in LA. She was immediately introduced to a new set of beauty and style expectations that were different from what was allowed at her prim and mandatory-uniform Catholic School. Growing up traveling between parents and cities, Los Angeles and Atlanta, provided her with the foundation to assess and adapt to new surroundings quickly. While her mother was stricter in how she allowed Nia to self-express, her father, a well-known comedy agent, was more lenient. Her early exposure to the entertainment business, coupled with music video inspiration on BET, Nia quickly carved out her own path personally and professionally.During our conversation, Nia shared that while she studied acting in college, her father dissuaded her from pursuing a career in acting. The Harlem Renaissance inspired her to move to New York during the early 2000s. After interning at the famous Apollo Theater, she embarked on a career as an executive and landed roles at Comedy Central, The Chappelle Show, and even MTV. Despite a successful career and blossoming relationship with her now-husband, Bill Burr, she was unfulfilled. She transitioned to a full-time stay-at-home mother, but still felt called towards creative work. Nia decided to invest fully in herself and her interests, only to find that she was the career of her dreams. Her current role, as a purveyor of the best in Black fine dining, is created in her image; truly original, funny, and endlessly entertaining. After receiving his first guitar at age 10, a determined Michael became self-taught with the help of his bedroom radio, spending days on end playing along with Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery and B.B. King records. After studying jazz guitar in high school, an impromptu backstage audition for George Clinton in 1974 earned 17-year-old Michael a seat on the Parliament mothership alongside the immortal Eddie Hazel, under the name “Kidd Funkadelic”. Hampton has spent the past half-century playing nearly 400 shows with the band, in 25 countries across 6 continents. Highlights include multiple appearances at world-renowned festivals like Montreux Jazz, Glastonbury, Reading, Woodstock '99, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock, and Isle of Wight, and venues like the Apollo Theater, The Fillmore, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Troubadour, Red Rocks, The Beacon, and Sydney Opera House. Among Hampton's Funkadelic writing credits are group staples like “Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!” and “Funk Gets Stronger”, both released during the group's late- '70s/early-'80s hit run. His lead guitar is also embedded in the DNA of 90s hip-hop's G- Funk movement—Dr. Dre's “Let Me Ride” samples Parliament's “Mothership Connection”, Ice Cube's “Bop Gun” borrows elements of Funkadelic's “One Nation Under a Groove”, while De La Soul's “Me Myself and I”, Digital Underground's “Kiss You Back”, and Snoop Dogg's “What's My Name?” all draw from Funkadelic's “(Not Just) Knee Deep”. Michael's colleagues include George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, Charlie Wilson, Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, Fred Wesley & The JB's, Chuck Treece, Dean Ween, Primal Scream, Digital Underground, Too $hort, and Deee-Lite. Michael's contributions to the Parliament Funkadelic catalog have also influenced famed artists like Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Outkast, D'Angelo and Janelle Monáe, among many others. As of 2025, Michael has appeared on over 30 separate major label releases. Though best known for his role in the funk guitar pantheon, Hampton is also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, with drums, keys, and synth programming credits across the Parliament discography. Originally from Seattle, Gracelyn Woods grew up housing insecure, food insecure and raised by a single mom. From these tough beginnings, she cultivated a fierce attitude of hard work and self-determination that resulted in a successful career in TV and event production in New York City. But after 20 years of this work, culminating in a big job with the landmark Apollo Theater, Gracelyn found herself mired in unhappiness.  “The lifestyle of TV and event production had taken its toll. It had shown up in vices, it had showed up in drinking, it had showed up in overspending,” she says in our interview. “My first step was to get the physical space I needed to have a moment to think about it.”  So in 2018, she moved to Beacon – alone – and started a new life. She met her partner - an FDNY firefighter - and they had a child. Meanwhile, she took on a big new job as COO and co-owner of The Bellweather Agency. The best adventures are often found when we embrace curiosity. That's a lesson that Tamron Hall has learned in her storied career as a cultural icon, Emmy-winning talk show host, and broadcast journalist, as well as in her role as a young parent to a son with a shy but investigative nature to explore the world around him. In today's conversation, Tamron talks to Jen and Amy about that curiosity and why it is a trait that should be celebrated and nurtured, both in our children and in ourselves. They talk about the many cultural treasures that already exist right in our own neighborhoods, if we open ourselves up to the beauty of exploring new places and faces. And, Tamron also shares details with Amy and Jen about her latest labor of love, the children's book that she just released called Harlem Honey: The Adventures of a Curious Kid, an endearing story inspired by her real-life son and his adventure visiting Harlem's most iconic spots, learning a valuable lesson about the meaning of home. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: Things that are authentic tend to come easy but that doesn't mean that the process isn't challenging. – Tarmron Hall As adults, through our urgency, we can rush our children through great opportunities of curiosity. – Tamron Hall I was very worried when my son presented as shy. Shy kids, especially boys, can be steeped into tropes and stereotypes of what a shy kid is. It forced me to talk more openly about my own social anxieties. – Tamron Hall The best of my journey as a reporter was opening my eyes to the cultural difference and nuances of neighborhoods. – Tamron Hall Storytelling is something that we all have the ability to do. When you tell it from your heart and from an authentic space, it can resonate. It transcends gender, economics. It transcends everything. – Tamron Hall Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Prince - https://www.prince.com/ The Tamron Hall Show - https://tamronhallshow.com/ Jen Hatmaker Gets Real About Healing After Divorce on The Tamron Hall Show - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkm0RqfRYMI As the Wicked Watch: The First Jordan Manning Novel by Tamron Hall - https://amzn.to/4hnc8qn Harlem Honey: The Adventures of a Curious Kid by Tarmron Hall - https://amzn.to/4hJEuea Deadline: Crime With Tamron Hall - https://www.investigationdiscovery.com/show/deadline-crime-with-tamron-hall-investigation-discovery The TODAY Show - https://www.today.com/ Sisterwives Tell All - https://www.tlc.com/shows/sister-wives/episodes/sister-wives-tell-all Ebony Glenn, Illustrator - https://www.ebonyglenn.com/ 100 Mighty Dragons All Named Broccoli by David LaRochelle - https://amzn.to/4jOvGFz Are You There God?
