In this episode Joy Gilfilen, host of iChange Justice podcast, asks Irene Morgan to talk about why, as an 80-year old grandmother, she is still standing up for “Right Action for All”. What got her learning about Peacemaking, reconciliation and non-violent communication, counseling and Restorative Justice? What drove her to learn about whole family trauma recovery, abuse addiction and healing work? Join us to learn how – for she's built a bridge to help those facing huge barriers to reentering society. What happened that she has become a spiritual healer and civic activist and started questioning how the business operations of the prison industrial complex works? As a prior co-owner operator of a meatpacking slaughter business with her husband and children she started with questions, then in the 70's,80's and 90's she began volunteering at the local non-profit Northwest Youth services, the Homeless Coalition, Crisis Services, served on the Community Accountability Board before working at Sean Humphrey House. Eventually she saw the gap and found her voice as the founder of the Restorative CommUnity Coalition to work resolving jail and prison issues. “I have always been a champion for the underdog…then one evening I met Don Kirchner, author of “A Matter of Time”. He'd been incarcerated and faced up to 25 years in Federal prison, when he started working with inmates, to help them heal and as a result the prosecutor dropped the additional charges. His book opened my eyes. He's become a champion advocating for all people involved in the jail, justice and reentry business. It inspired me to start the RCC with14 members, including several from the Dept. of Corrections in 2006. We've now worked with thousands of inmates, friends, families, interns, judges, and employees of law enforcement, court employees and service providers. “I have great hope for our future!” - Irene Morgan

In this episode we speak with Paige Dinger, the Executive Director of Faces of Hope (https://www.facesofhopevictimcenter.org). Their purpose statement describes what they're all about better than we could, so here it is: Faces of Hope provides a safety net of emergency services to people experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, stalking, and/or human trafficking. Men, women, and children can come to Faces of Hope and receive help, with no judgment, no strings, and no fees. Our dedicated team wraps around an individual or family and provides crisis intervention services to stabilize them. We are so grateful to have learned all about what Faces does for members of our community. But this conversation was hard. On one hand, what they do for victims of abuse is the pinnacle of compassion, community, and lovingkindness. On the other, that there's so much need for what they do is heartbreaking, terrifying, and rage-inducing. It's hard to square up in your mind that this amazing community of ours is so riddled with domestic violence and abuse. Some might say it's better than many places in the world, and yes, that may be true- AND that's no excuse that it happens at all, nor is it justification for us turning a blind eye towards it or downplaying it. As we spoke with Paige, it quickly became apparent that there isn't an easy solution. The scenarios are often very complicated and don't lend themselves to any sort of quick fix. After listening to some of these examples, the depth and complexity of the problem were overwhelming. But one can make the case that it's incredibly encouraging that our community has so many resources for domestic violence and abuse, and Faces is one of them. A simple Google search of “domestic abuse resources” returns a long list of local groups committed to helping those in need in tangible ways (we were brought to tears hearing about how Faces provides what's called Hope's Closet). We encourage you to listen to this episode, if not for yourself, then for someone in your life. The statics show that the odds of you or someone close to you experiencing domestic abuse at some point during your life is staggeringly high. And take note of the ways Paige says we can provide support. Whether it's through time, money, or donations, getting involved and making a real impact on someone's life is much easier than you might think. You can learn more about Faces at www.facesofhopevictimcenter.org (https://www.facesofhopevictimcenter.org). If you are experiencing abuse and need help, please find them. Their website is great and easy to navigate, and their offices are located at 1850 S. Eagle Road in Meridian (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Faces+of+Hope+Victim+Center+-+Meridian/@43.5883571,-116.3534908,17z/data=!3m2!4b1!5s0x54ae514afbd77337:0x94814c434c484a87!4m6!3m5!1s0x54ae513ce40c59df:0x8d62f8640597343b!8m2!3d43.5883571!4d-116.3534908!16s%2Fg%2F11vpnq_0tm?entry=ttu). Welcome to the weekend! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, October 8, and Sunday, October 9. It may start out frosty, but temperatures will climb into a pretty nice weekend. According to the National Weather Service there will be widespread frost in the Cedar Rapids area on Saturday, mainly before 9 a.m. But it will be sunny, with an eventual high near 62 degrees. On Saturday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 39 degrees. On Sunday it will be sunny, with a high near 72 degrees. On Sunday night it will be mostly clear, with a high near 43 degrees. A Cedar Rapids couple will donate $2.1 million to seven Linn County nonprofits, United Way of East Central Iowa, one of the beneficiaries, announced Friday. The couple, Mike and Jo Cambridge, ran a staffing business called Cambridge TEMPositions in Cedar Rapids for more than 30 years before they retired in 2014. In 2015, the couple donated https://www.thegazette.com/news/cedar-rapids-couple-donates-4-5-million-to-catholic-schools-churches/ ($4.5 million) to five Catholic schools and churches. The seven nonprofits that will receive funds, along with United Way of East Central Iowa, are Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Foundation 2 Crisis Services, Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, Mercy Medical Center Foundation, the Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids and Willis Dady Homeless Services. Each nonprofit will receive $300,000 over the next three years.  So somebody decided that doing an active shooting drill on election day might be a bad idea. Kirkwood Community College officials on Friday notified the campus they're postponing an active shooter drill previously planned for Election Day, Nov. 8 — a delay that came after some faculty and staff voiced concern about the drill's timing and potential to disrupt voting. In the Friday “special update” announcing the active threat drill would be moved, Kirkwood Public Safety officials said they're working with the Cedar Rapids Police Department to find an alternative date. The entities originally picked Nov. 8 for the drill on Kirkwood's main Cedar Rapids campus solely because it worked for everyone's schedules according to a Kirkwood spokesman. Kirkwood's Cedar Rapids campus hosts two polling places, and its Iowa City campus hosts one polling place. A $5 million grant will aid an overhaul of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, the state announced Friday, the same day former President George W. Bush was in Cedar Rapids to help raise funds for the museum's renovation. The grant was issued by the state's economic development agency through a program that promotes tourism. The grant is funded by federal pandemic relief funding, which Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds originally opposed.  Herbert Hoover is the only U.S. president born in Iowa. https://hoover.archives.gov/ (The museum) features information about Hoover and his wife, First Lady Lou Henry Hoover. The Hoover Presidential Foundation is in the midst of https://www.thegazette.com/news/herbert-hoover-presidential-library-and-museum-open-again-in-west-branch/#:~:text=by%20Iowa%20taxpayers.-,Fundraiser,-One%20of%20the (a $20 million capital campaign) to renovate the museum's permanent galleries and exhibit galleries. The project will include the addition of 2,250 square feet of updated and interactive displays, and a modernized visitor experience. Former President Bush was scheduled Friday to https://www.thegazette.com/government-politics/former-president-george-w-bush-will-be-in-cedar-rapids-friday-heres-why-hes-here/ (receive a humanitarian award and headline a fundraiser for the museum). This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, April 14. It won't rain on Thursday,  but it will still be very windy. Typical spring in Iowa pick your poison. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 50 degrees. As mentioned it will be windy all day, with a wind of 15 to 20 mph increasing to 25 to 30 mph in the afternoon, possibly gusting as high as 50 mph. A chance for rain and some snow could return overnight into Friday morning. According to the Associated Press, a tornado hit near Gilmore City in rural north-central Iowa as a strong line of storms moved across the state Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service confirmed later on Wednesday. Up to 10 tornadoes were reported across mostly the northern half of the state as the storms moved through, but only the tornadoes near Logan in western Iowa and near Stacyville and St. Ansgar in northeastern Iowa have been confirmed. Survey teams were headed to those areas Wednesday to determine whether tornadoes had touched down and to verify the intensity of those storms. Fueled by $11 million in federal pandemic aid, the Linn County Board of Supervisors approved funding Wednesday for 39 applicants — including programs to increase affordable housing, reduce gun violence, address mental health needs and support food distribution — in its first round of divvying up the county's share of the relief money. Linn County will get a total of $44 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. Of that, the county will take $11 million for its own lost revenue and administrative costs during the pandemic, a category allowed under the federal rules. That leaves $33 million to dole out — the $11 million awarded Wednesday, and $22 million more after May or June. Foundation 2 Crisis Services received the largest amount in the social services category, at $900,000 for a new headquarters. Foundation 2 Chief Operating Officer Erin Langdon said the award is transformational for the organization. A lawyer for former Democratic U.S. Rep. Abby Finkenauer asked the Iowa Supreme Court on Wednesday to overturn a lower court judge's ruling that kicked her off the June primary ballot, saying she deserves the chance to vie for the chance to run against Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley in November. Finkenauer, whom many Democrats see as their best chance to deny Grassley an eighth Senate term, turned in nearly 5,000 signatures to get on the June 7 primary ballot. But two Republicans argued before the State Objections Panel that she hadn't submitted at least 100 from at least 19 counties, as required by a state law. They pointed to three signatures in two counties that were not properly dated. The high court didn't say when it might rule, but it is expected to do so soon because ballots must be sent to printers by Monday to meet a deadline to mail ballots to Iowa residents living abroad. Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. Centuries of discrimination and brutality have led to historical trauma impacting generations of people of color in the United States. Add to this significant current trauma of racially fueled violence the fact that communities of color experience disparities in access to qualified care, and it's not surprising that we are seeing increased despair among BIPOC people. We are also seeing incredible resilience — at the individual and communal levels — and creativity as people of color find ways to cope. In this interview, Vic Armstrong and I talk about many hot topics:Complex trauma in Black communitiesSystematic racism and the treatment gaps in servicesThe trends in Black suicide ratesThe shifting role of the Black church in suicide preventionDistrust, crisis services and communities of colorVic Armstrong headshot B&W.pngAbout Vic ArmstrongTwitter: https://twitter.com/1of2vics Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/victor.armstrong.96343 Victor Armstrong joined North Carolina DHHS as ‪Director of the NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Substance Abuse Services in March of 2020, with responsibility and oversight of the public community-based mental health, intellectual and other developmental disabilities, substance use, and traumatic brain injury system in North Carolina.
