And now…Part 2 of my Inside Look into Voodoo Lounge! How does the rest of the album fair compared to the first half? Even more chances are taken in the second half but does it all come together? Many fans say the album is too long and should have been cut down to normal length yet no 2 fans can agree on what songs to cut! For now, come on in–your table is ready at the Voodoo Lounge.
Scott Galupo joins me a for a fun chat on one of our favorite Stones albums. It's about time we focused on these later albums more and here we are with a great one: Voodoo Lounge! The album turns 30 this year so it's a great time to revisit this one.
Right in time to celebrate the album's 30th anniversary let's take a trip to 1994 and take another look at Voodoo Lounge. With so many classic albums under their belt, it's understandable that a few could slip through the cracks. Voodoo Lounge is one of them. Super varied and very experimental in its own way, this album packs quite a punch. Join me as we rediscover this early 90's classic!
Don Was & The Pan Detroit EnsembleMaggie LePique speaks with Don Was about his new musical group Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble. Don & the Ensemble are embarking on a West Coast run of concert dates in September 2024. Made up of stellar jazz musicians from his Detroit hometown, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble will perform a mix of new originals, interpretations of songs written by artists like Yusef Lateef, Olu Dara, and Henry Threadgill, and of course updated cuts from albums that Don recorded with Orquestra Was and Was (Not Was). Don's Detroit roots still run deep and, we explore those roots and highlight his most recent musical love letter to that great city, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, and so much more. More on Don Was:Don Was is one of music's most significant artists and executives, exceling in multiple roles and serving as one of the industry's beacons for integrity and forward-thinking. During this period of disruption and rapid evolution in the worldwide music business, Was remains committed to music as an art form and its importance to contemporary culture. As the President of Blue Note Records since 2011, Was is both the company's leader and an ambassador for its music, charged with bringing the label's 21st Century jazz artists and its expanding pallet of contemporary musicians to larger audiences. Was is also caretaker for Blue Note's singular and historic catalogue of music, and is burnishing the label's 80-year legacy by overseeing ongoing and extensive reissue campaigns that serve audiences in both the analogue and digital realms. One of Was's most noteworthy musical associations of the past two decades is with The Rolling Stones, for whom he's produced their last four studio albums and a host of other studio and live recordings. Beginning with Voodoo Lounge in 1994 and continuing through Bridges To Babylon in 1997, A Bigger Bang in 2005 and Blue And Lonesome in 2016, Was's work with the Stones has resulted in Platinum and Gold certifications in dozens of countries. He also oversees the band's historic reissues, including Exile on Main Street in 2010, Some Girls in 2011 and Sticky Fingers in 2015, searching the band's vaults and master tapes for lost jewels and bringing the projects to completion. He produced the band's 2020 surprise single, “Living In A Ghost Town,” which was released amidst the global pandemic in April of that year.Source: https://donwas.com/https://www.bluenote.com/Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. An enjoyable conversation with John Michaels, the leader of the new Bruce Springsteen tribute band “Thunder Road”. They will be appearing at the Voodoo Lounge at Harrah's in North KC, bringing their outstanding catalogue of Springsteen music based on live show arrangments. A fun ride!
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Wolf & Action Jackson are HUGE Rolling Stones fans and count seeing the Steel Wheels Tour live in their respective cities as an important moment in their lives. Though the Stones never said it, many figured the Steel Wheels Tour would be the last chance for many people to ever see the Stones play. And because Bill Wyman retired after that tour, one could argue that definitely signaled the end of an era. Fast forward 5 years later and our hosts are in college, had been roommates, and went crazy for Keith Richards 1992 solo effort Main Offender. When the Stone s announced they'd signed a new $44 million deal with Virgin and would be putting out a new album with Darryl Jones on the bass, the boys were psyched. Not only would that mean some new Keith songs to hear on the album but that there would be a new tour - another chance to see the Stones live! This made for a special time in the boys lives and we've chosen to review this album to remember those heady days. However, even at the time the boys didn't love Voodoo Lounge. Producer Don Was tried to play up some funky grooves and call backs to their heyday but the end result was long (over an hour) and a disappointment outside of the songs Keith Richards sang. Still, our heroes go track x track here to unveil what was happening in Stones World at the time, which songs are worth keeping, which songs would have made better b-sides and what they loved about the tour. Keith Richards made Talk is Cheap in 1988 as a response to Mick Jagger's efforts as a solo artist and the sniping the two had engaged in via the press in the mid-80s. But the Glimmer Twins made up, recorded Steel Wheels in 1989 and launched one of the biggest tours in rock history, reestablishing the Stones as a viable touring act. However, Keith didn't want to give up this fabulous band he'd created with Steve Jordan (now in the Stones), Charlie Drayton, Ivan Neville, Waddy Wachtel, Sarah Dash and Bobby Keys. So while the Stones paused before Voodoo Lounge, Keith & the X-Pensive Wynos released Main Offender. Wicked As It Seems was a bit of a hit on rock radio and inspired Mick to work with Keith to create Love Is Strong off Voodoo Lounge. It's a great album and the band did tour to support it. We're reviewing the 30th anniversary edition which includes a live performance from England in 1993. Truth be told this one has been on the shelf for a while as the 30th anniversary edition was released in March 2022 but we've been busy with interviews, live concert reviews and lots of fun stuff. Coming at you with a few raging bangers on a Tuesday night, figured I'd bless your daily commute, workout or whenever you happen to click on this garbage. Mowing the yard maybe? Who cares. I was absolutely fired up to finally blast Tony Bennett from 1963, it's only right. I've listened to Joey Diaz and Lee "Boom Boom" Syatt fire that one off plenty of times in the Voodoo Lounge so I had to bring that lovely tune to the fine people on my side of the internet landscape. There is more ammunition on the way if you actually enjoy these. Vinyls of Kids See Ghosts by Kanye and Kid Kudstable, as well as a single from TOOL will be here in a few days barring an unfortunate mistake by the lovely folks down at the United States Postal Service. But again, seeing as how most everything I touch turns into mush, there's a solid chance my records end up half way down the equator belt in Venezuela somewhere. I'm tired now and rambling about stupidity. Thanks for listening and if you read these horrific descriptions.. God blessCo-Assistant ManagerDJ Witwicky

Cato and I worked nearly every live broadcast or remote for RADIO STATION CALLED SOUTH FLORIDA'S PURE DANCE CHANNEL, PARTY 93.1. Before we knew it, 3 1/2 years had passed and my time at Party 93.1 was done as the station flipped formats to Rock music and my run at Voodoo Lounge where Cato and I had our broadcast was done. I felt like my heart was broken and taken away from me in a flash, but for Cato, it was just the beginning. He ended up becoming one of America's hottest mix show and club DJs, dominating Miami airwaves and shaping the sound of the Magic City dance music scene. Club Sessions with Cato K., was heard weekly on Miami's Party Station Power 96 and as well landed on the radio and satellite frequencies of Y100 and SiriusXM. His mix show became one of the most downloaded podcasts on iTunes consistently ranking in the Top 50 music podcasts with such artists as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Avicii, Roger Sanchez, Matt Darey and Ferry Corsten.Natalia had the chance to finally reconnect with him and the story she discovered was truly inspirational.Let's get into the mind of Cato K....Vixens Cabaret Vixens Cabaret is your leader in EDM Adult Entertainment Experiences

Almost finished with this crazy group of lads we call "The Rolling Stones" we discuss their takes on the 90's with Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon.
Hey Gang! Brent Porche here.. I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Barron, lead singer, of The Spin Doctors ahead of his show at City Winery Philadelphia on 8/24. We talk about the 30th anniversary of their multi-platinum debut "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" (released August 20th 1991), the filming of the music video for their smash hit Two Princes.. and the whereabouts of that infamous knit hat! We chat about the early days of the Spin Doctors/Trucking Company and rooming with John Popper & Blues Traveler in NYC. We also touch on the Spin Doctors opening for the Rolling Stones on the Voodoo Lounge tour & Sir Keef's "guitar guy". Also, what it was like having their debut album released the week before Pearl Jams's debut, Ten, while on the same record label. And one of my favorites from the chat, among many, was Chris' story about the first time he met Pierre Robert! Chris Barron will be performing live at the City Winery in Philadelphia on Tuesday August 24th 2021 - with special guests Michael Glabicki from Rusted Root w/ Dirk Miller. Featuring a special opening set from Danny Beissel from Featherborn/Fosterchild. Show time 8pm Thanks for Listening! bp

The Oilers' Goaltending Situation, the Blue Jays' Catching Conundrum, and the Battle of Alberta on this week's edition of YEG Sports!
On episode 7 of Past Prime, Matty & Steve sit down in their bespoke suits for a cup of Earl Grey tea to discuss The Rolling Stones' 1994 "comeback" album, "Voodoo Lounge." Released after a string of tepid albums and more frequent and public spats between The Glimmer Twins, the band got into the studio with taskmaster Don Was and aimed to reclaim some of their greatness. The result was a bloated, if beloved, album that sounded like The Stones' politely imitating The Stones. Mothers and fathers were delighted by it familiarity. They shared it with their children. Together, half of the people on Earth went to see the gargantuan tour. MTV played the video with the band walking around New York City, taller than skyscrapers. If you were alive in 1994, you were very aware of "Voodoo Lounge." Matty suggests that "Voodoo Lounge" sounds like a well delivered press release from Rolling Stones Inc. Steve suggests it sounds like expensive plastic surgery. They both agree that the two songs that Keith sings -- "The Worst" and "Through and Through" -- are actually the best songs on the album. As lifelong Stones fans, they miss Billy Preston on piano. They miss when the guys would sing back up. But they don not miss "Dirty Work" or "Steel Wheels." It's easy for our hosts to conclude that "Voodoo Lounge" is a step forward after several steps back. But like man of us, they do wonder if Mick will ever lay off the dick jokes and lady car metaphors. To read more about The Rolling Stones' "Voodoo Lounge," check out the full essay at Past Prime.

El disco que resignificó el sonido Stone. Seguinos!
Voodoo Lounge showed that the Stones might actually be able to pull off the unthinkable --- a melding of the classic melodicism and guitarplay that they'd been known for with songcraft that sounded relatively fresh and, if not modern, at least in keeping with the aesthetic of the times. Part of that was due to the rotation of music fashion, with the sounds of the 1990s sounding a lot more like the late 60s and early 70s than the 1980s had. Bridges To Babylon, however, showed that the union of Rolling Stones album and modern sound was still a hit-or-miss proposition. There were some fascinating modern touches on this album, and some songwriting that was still pretty remarkable despite its new production wrapper. There were also a lot of songs and ideas that just didn't quite cut it, and an atmosphere of separation and disagreement in the writing and production structure that ends up making the album feel like a bunch of solo projects going on simultaneously. The result is an album that is a genuinely interesting but ultimately frustrating listening exercise. There's at least two bona fide Rolling Stones classics on here, but there's also a group of songs that sound either uninspired or perfunctory. It's well worth a listen with modern ears, but it may be the most dated-to-the-moment album that the Rolling Stones had made since the mid 1960s.
This 1994 release is the first Stones studio album Galen had on CD, and it’s the first Stones album released in Alex’s lifetime. Beyond the personal connections to the album, Voodoo Lounge offers a wide variety of musical stylings and some excellent performances. The hour-long album offers tastes of country, baroque pop, alt-rock, balladry, blues rock, and a towering Keith Richards song at the end. Though not every song is a home run, Voodoo Lounge earns high praise from the Cosmic America team as the best Stones album in more than a decade at that point.

Fat Tony is a key player on the London scene, both for gay and straight parties. Now with an international reputation, he is as in demand as he was when first starting out 30 years ago. Back then he was playing at the Playground but soon started his own night, Total Fashion Victim, then Jungle in 1985, which became the first place to play garage and house. Since then he has gone on to play every major club worth its salt, and has held some key residencies all round the country. Further afield he is often booked to play influential events and clubs around the world from New York to Sydney to Greece, and is as embraced by the gay community as he is the straight scene. As well as being big in the underground circuit, Tony is well known to high profile celebrity clientele and has DJed for the likes of Prince and the Pet Shop Boys, Sade and Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross and Boy George as well as Madonna. As such he has a versatile sound that can be tailored to any occasion, big or small. Over the years Tony has worked weekly in the Trade lite lounge as well as The Voodoo Lounge and Twisted UK, and has held regard residencies at Crash and Heaven. In the studio he is no slouch either, and has clocked up big dance hits like ‘Men Adore a Whore’ on Big Life by Fierce Child Collective, and is sure to keep on laying down his party starting sets everywhere from Moscow to New York to Kuala Lumpa. Grabado el 12 de Febrero de 1995, I Can't Get No, Satisfaction.
Richard Ashcroft, lead singer of the Verve, will finally begin earning royalties on soft rock schlock Bitter Sweet Symphony, his 1997 chart topper. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have gracefully donated their songwriting credit back to Ashcroft after having sued for breach of sampling contract when the Stones were so down on their luck after Voodoo Lounge. Did the Stones do the right thing in suing or did Ashcroft get treated like a farm animal the last 22 years?

If you have been listening to the Live Music Podcast for a while this is probably already apparent, but I try to mix up the musical styles quite a bit. Last episode featured the electronic sounds of Daft Punk and this time I am featuring the bluesy jam band Gov't Mule. Known by some as the Mule, this band has been together since the mid nineties and has built up a very loyal fan base. Musically their songs aren't a great fit for most radio stations so they remain relatively unknown to the majority despite their immense amounts of talent. The concert I am featuring was played at the Voodoo Lounge in Kansas City on November 1st of this year. I almost got tickets to this and after listening to the recording I really am kicking myself for not going. Fortunately for me the recording is absolutely flawless and props go out to the mystery taper who posted it on bt.etree.org.
