This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a product of Nation's Restaurant News, NRN editors Holly Petre, Leigh Anne Zinsmeister, and Ron Ruggless spoke about brand activations. This week, the writers took a break from earnings because frankly they're all exhausted. NRN senior editor Ron Ruggless is on the pod this week and he talked about his recent experience with North Italia in Miami. He was there for a brand activation at the Formula One Grand Prix and spoke with the brand's marketing director about where it's going next. That led the writers to the only earnings content this week, Cheesecake Factory. It's perfect since Cheesecake Factory purchased North Italia's owner Fox Restaurant Concepts in 2019 and has since been trying to fold the brands into its larger strategy. During this quarterly earnings call, executives announced another Fox Restaurant concepts brand, Flower Child, would join the company's supply chain. Finally, the writers talked about where quick service stands. They have seen the impact of pricing at McDonald's on consumers, something that has pushed many to fast-casual brands instead. Many brands are struggling to gain traffic from low-income consumers who say they want to dine out more. For QSRs, that's a large part of their business. What can they do to win customers back? Is it as simple as fixing the value equation? This week's guest is Garrett Kern, VP of strategy and culinary at Portillo's.

In today's episode I had the great honor of chatting with Lauren Peterson of White Deer apothecary. I loved hearing about her journey as an artist, herbalist and educator. She taught a class on cyanotypes that lit a fire under me and was so fun and empowering! And I made a bunch of cyanotypes this summer. I chose all my favorite sun prints and compiled them into a calendar for the year. I will have them for sale on my website in the coming days! A few of the highlights in this class are hearing how Lauren is so resourceful and the ways she innovates when she makes fire cider. It was also so fun to hear more about her brand's evolution and how she weaves together creativity and aesthetics with her product line and teaching pedagogy. If you get a chance to buy any of her products, you will not regret it, everything she makes smells and tastes like absolute heaven! And it was so fun to hear about her approach to product design and radical flavor combining. A bit about Lauren:Bio:Herbalist Lauren Peterson is a Juniper-lover, Sacred Journey School of Herbalism graduate & now teacher, and owner of White Deer Apothecary. Lauren's passion for plants grew from her desire to deepen her connection with the natural world and nurture relationships that allow healing to take place. Raised in upstate New York, Kevin Andreas is a writer, producer, singer and multi- instrumentalist hailing from Brooklyn, NY. He broke out singing the hook on A$AP Rocky's first hit,”Peso," and consistently writes/produces for incredible artists. He co-wrote and produced the breakout single '90s Kids' for the then American Idol and now TikTok sensation Jax. The once sideman and studio musician released a debut that took off beyond expectation. Vents Magazine called it "sexy, haunting and utterly awesome." while Paste Magazine called the track an “empowering anthem that combines energetic instrumentation and rock bombast with a soft, soulful melody." Soon it was featured on Filtr's Spotify "NEW MUSIC" playlist, as well as Filtr's "Artists to Watch" Spotify playlist. By late 2016, the track had garnered enough acclaim to warrant Spotify to place it on "Discover Weekly," leading the track to garner 130,000+ streams, all while still completely independent. Now releasing a string of singles leading up to an album, Kevin is also collaborating with members of Prince's infamous band, The Revolution. Kevin has been chosen to perform as direct support for Sabrina Carpenter (Hollywood Records) at Musikfest, and has also opened for Andy Grammer. He has performed at notable NYC venues such as Highline Ballroom, Brooklyn Bowl, Gramercy Theater, BB Kings and Webster Hall.

When Kristen noticed her right nipple felt different, her first thought was "what the F is this?" Her second thought was that her life was about to change. So she did what everyone does in this situation... she jumped out of the shower, went to Google, and diagnosed herself with a rare form of breast cancer called Paget's Disease. But Google's never right about these things, so a few days later when the radiologist suggested a biopsy for Paget's, shit got real. Overnight, life became a tightly-woven schedule of appointments wedged between work: a biopsy, an MRI, a colonoscopy, and a million different labs and scans leading up to the first chemo treatment. As a single woman with limited resources, Kristen had no choice but to advocate for herself, quickly figuring out the magic words to use with her healthcare providers to move the process along faster and start treatment sooner. In this episode recorded on her first day of chemo, Kristen tells us what's happened so far, including why her mammogram didn't catch the tumor, what made her cry and what made her throw up at the first chemo appointment, and how nearly taking her own life a year earlier prepared her to confront breast cancer with strength and courage instead of defeat. From the awful moment in the shower through the last day of radiation and beyond — this is Kristen's breast cancer story, told in real time.
