The story follows Abitha, a young widow struggling to survive in a Puritanical society that views her as an outcast. When she encounters an ancient spirit known as Slewfoot, a creature tied to both the natural world and darker forces, she must decide whether to embrace its power or remain under the oppressive rule of her village. In the second episode of season 6, we get into the fall vibes with an atmospheric, witchy book called Slewfoot by the author and artist Brom. Pooja had a LOT of thoughts on this book, arguably too many, leading to some rants and rambles. But listen in if you want to hear our thoughts on this revenge story with a twist!
Join us as we tell the story of one of the most notorious landmarks in West Virginia: the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.Known as the most haunted place in America, this episode uncovers the dark history and eerie folklore surrounding this infamous asylum. EMILY HUGHES, the creator and curator of the readjumpscares.com website has been kind enough to provide an incredible list of folk horror fiction for y'all which is in the show notes below. Locked On Predators - Daily Podcast On The Nashville Predators
The Nashville Predators lost to the Calgary Flames last night at home in a game that was unimpressive and uninspired in a number of ways. On today's Locked On Predators, we break down last night's loss including our "one word" to describe the game. The Predators' defense didn't give Juuse Saros much help in a four goal first period, but Saros was pulled after forty minutes and a solid second period. We talk about Andrew Brunette's decision to let Kevin Lankinen play in the third period and whether we have long term concerns about Saros this season. What is the short term lingering question about Nashville's goaltending ahead of this weekend's game against the Dallas Stars? Phil Tomasino was assessed a match penalty late in the third period for what was called a slewfoot on Dennis Gilbert. We break down that play and explain why calls like this add to a growing frustration with officiating inconsistencies this season. Finally, we give a shout out to Nashville's 2023-2024 All Star Filip Forsberg. We share how we feel about his selection and what has made this season so good for the Swedish forward.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Happy Fourth of July... well, Sixth of July... well, Third of July. This week on the Help on the Way Podcast, our hosts FiG and Knob went riding down South Colorado for the Grateful Dead's July 3rd, 1969 show at Reed's Ranch in Colorado Springs. Discussions abound about Ol' Slewfoot, what constitutes the Terrapin Suite, and FiG debuts his killer Knob impression. In this episode, Barney, Mark & Jasper invite counterculture chronicler and "father of country punk" Michael Simmons to join them in RBP's virtual cupboard… all the way from his Culver City lair in small-hours Southern California.Michael talks very entertainingly about his dad Matty's '60s "hippie mag" Cheetah and about National Lampoon, the satirical '70s institution that succeeded it. Yarns about John Belushi and chums lead into Simmons Jr.'s unlikely but lifelong love of country music; his New York band Slewfoot; depping for George Jones at the Bottom Line; and his late '70s stint as one of Kinky Friedman's self-styled "Texas Jewboys".We also hear about our guest's parallel writing career and his move to Los Angeles, from whence he has long contributed to such outlets as the L.A. Weekly and (from the mid-noughties on) MOJO. He reminisces about his teenage Greenwich Village obsession with Bob Dylan, and talks about the liner notes he's penned for three of Bob's Bootleg Series box sets.Mention of a Van Dyke Parks piece Michael wrote in 2013 takes us into clips from John Tobler's long 1973 audio interview with that eccentric L.A. genius & Beach Boys/Randy Newman acolyte. At the end of the episode you will hear amusing banter between Van Dyke and a passing Lowell George (who'd just been interviewed next door by Pete "Family Trees" Frame). After paying our respects to departed heroes Ronnie Spector and Michael Lang, Mark & Jasper take us out with quotes from their favourite new additions to the RBP library. Mark mentions the late Maureen Cleave's 1965 interview with Nina Simone, Lon Goddard's 1970 encounter with Joni Mitchell & Ed Jones' 1975 review of Motörhead at the Roundhouse, while Jasper cites a Simon Reynolds special on "digital maximalism" and Mark Sinker's reflections on COVID and rock nostalgia. Please note that this episode was recorded before news of Meat Loaf's death reached us.Many thanks to special guest Michael Simmons; find his writing on RBP as well as in the Huffington Post and LA Weekly. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Slewfoot, with only a few things to take me out of 1666 Connecticut. 00:00 - Today we will get into Slewfoot by Brom https://amzn.to/3zA6z2A 01:01 - A tale of bewitchery 01:50 - The setting and people 03:02 - The VVitch meets A Midsummer's Night Dream 04:23 - Abitha and her husband 06:30 - A peek inside the book 09:00 - It's good to own land... 10:11 - Skipping church? That's a paddlin' 11:22 - It may even be more horror than fantasy 12:12 - Have you read Slewfoot? Slewfoot by Gerald Brom was a gift to me, and an anticipated read all in one. Abitha, the lead character, as a near-shunned Puritan woman and the cover art had me deeply intrigued. What I did not expect was the level of whimsy and fantasy found here, and while normally it's not my cup of tea, this fit so nicely into my vision of a magical occurrence at this time, that I would certainly read more like this. I'm new to Brom, save casual noticing of his art, so his style may not come as a surprise to fans. Meeting Abitha and the bible quoting townsfolk was as intriguing to me as the creatures that step from the forest to turn her life upside down. Newly widowed, fighting a land claim, and practising healing arts made Abitha's life in 1966 Connecticut feel very real to me. Then, there is Slewfoot. The imagery linked to the myth is lovely and enchanting as all the rest. A cross between Robert Eggers' film ‘The Witch' and A Midsummers Night Dream. ✮✮✮✮✮✮ Welcome to Typical books; horror fiction unbound - I am Lydia Peever, horror author and co-host of the horror film podcast Dead Air and creator of the horror booktube channel Typical Books. There are a lot of names for Satan but one of my favorites is Ole Slew Foot. Have you every heard that one? Ole Slew Foot is having a hey day in our world today, but greater is He who is in us than he that is in the world. He's tricky, crafty and seeks to confuse us and destroy our testimony and influence. Be on guard today against the "wiles of the devil."

Ol' Slewfoot's always in town looking for who he can take down. The good news is, he can't take you down if you know your onions. Learn how he operates and how to whip him in your life. He's a dog and a coward. Get angry and press play.
I got to talk to one of the people who was on my label, dear old Slewfoot. We talk about her career in academia and all that is involved in being a critic and a rocker. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dale613/support

Slewfoot destroyed Draftkings winning over $130k. Are position uniques useful in NFL? Duel for a Difference, where entry fees go towards Lupus research.
Slewfoot is the big winner on Draftkings as he takes down $100k. Sharks do well overall and bounce back. Users playing micro-stakes have been getting too cute and I give some pointers on what NOT to do. The Arcade Series has been going on and it features cool tech prizes.
We're kicking off 2018 with another visit from my good friend, Andy Barnes. Together we dug into a list of venues that the Grateful Dead only visited one time and we've assembled what I hope you'll find to be an entertaining listen. We cover a fair big of ground in this set, from the 60's to the 80's, with some rock, blues, and jamming throughout. Once again, this will be a two-parter, continuing with Ep013 in two weeks. So spin this up and hunker down by the fire as we wait out the Winter together. Thanks again to Andy, for coming on and bringing his wealth of knowledge along with his sense of humor. And thanks to you, kind listeners, for checking out the show. Set One Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl, Doin' That Rag (1969-05-16), Green Green Grass Of Home > Slewfoot (1969-07-03), China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider (1970-03-08), Bird Song (1980-12-06), Althea, Let It Grow (1982-04-03)
A real classic recording of some outstanding good ol' Grateful Dead this week, as we enjoy the band's performance on June 27th, 1969 at Veterans Auditorium in Santa Rosa California. This is one long set, as there were several bands on the bill this night and we get to hear some of the first performances of several songs destined to become classics. Slewfoot - the opening number wasn't one of those, but this is likely to be something you've never heard before - an old Johnny Horton number, with Jerry on Pedal Steel (he would also be on pedal steel guitar on Dire Wolf and Green Green Grass of Home on this set). Mama Tried follows, the 4th time the band has played it, even more country sounding than it would sound in years to come. A beautiful High Time follows, in only its third appearance.. Dupree's Diamond Blues follows then Me & My Uncle, still new in the band's rotation. A very different opening to Casey Jones is a treat to hear, as is Bobby handling the vocals on Dire Wolf. Other highlights include Pigpen on his only number here, "Big Boss Man", and of course Dark Star and St. Stephen.. Green Green Grass of Home, was made popular by Porter Wagoner on the country charts around this time.. I hope you enjoy this great recording of some wonderful early Dead..
