Netball NZ is opening the door to overseas-based Silver Ferns. They've updated their eligibility criteria, which means overseas players can be considered for national selection through a formal exemption process. Former Silver Fern Margaret Foster told Ryan Bridge that to represent your country on a national level, regardless of where they're playing in the world. She says the best competition is currently in Australia, so playing overseas allows athletes to improve before bringing back their new skills to represent their country. Netball New Zealand's updated the eligibility criteria for the Silver Ferns. Overseas-based players can now be considered for national selection through a formal exemption process. The updated criteria will be implemented ahead of the upcoming international season, allowing Grace Nweke to be available if she applies. Board chair Matt Whineray told Mike Hosking they had to balance everyone's interests – players' aspirations and development, the strength of the domestic competition, and the needs of the high-performance system and Silver Ferns. Netball officials are at the whim of the Commonwealth Games scheduling as they explore player eligibility options. Pressure is mounting on the New Zealand governing body to allow overseas-based athletes to feature for the Silver Ferns. The players' association has suggested moving the domestic tournament before or after the Australian competition, so their members can compete in both. Netball New Zealand boss Jennie Wyllie told Mike Hosking they don't control the Commonwealth Games, and it becomes difficult from a broadcast and commercial perspective when it keeps moving. She says that ideally, they'd have some certainty, and the Games would sit outside of the window, but they're at the whim of how the Federations plan it.
