Welcome to Make Sh*t Happen. This is Three Minute Thursday, episode number 165. Guys, I was listening to some motivational stuff I was running this morning, and some things I heard are like, you got to be don't watch the clock. Do what the clock does. Keep going. That's one thing. A lot of times, a lot of us just look at the clock. Oh, man, I got to look at the clock. Sometimes people go to work and they watch the clock so hard. And we feel like we make ourselves so busy. Like, just be clear to ourselves. And we feel like we are busy a lot of times. What I see and I see that it might work to people go to work and they go and they get coffee and 15 20 minutes, try to eat some stuff, get some Donuts to do whatever. And what do a lot of people do? At about 11, 11, 30, they start making plans for lunch, and then they come back from lunch. And what they do for the next 15, 20 minutes, they kind of get back in their work mode and about 3, 3, 34, go get some more coffee or stretch and talk or whatever. But at five o'clock, 4 45, we're cleaning up our desk, ready to go. And if you have that attitude and, you know, you feel like, hey, why things are not changing for me? Well, because you are not changing. You're a clock watcher. That's all you do. You know, a lot of times people say, hey, work on your nine to 4 95, and then after five, do some things to make you get some extra stuff going. The reality going. And it's very true. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sammyz/message

#5 – M 800 Free: In a race of the ages, Greg Paltrinieri was out like a shot in lane 8, holding a solid lead through the first 600. However, the field began to catch him in the last 200, but it was Bobby Finke, who flipped 4th at the 750, who came home in 26.3 to pass 3 other competitors to win in an American record in 7:41.87 #4 – M 200 Breast: Zac Stubblety-Cook swam a similar race to Finke, biding his time throughout the first 150 and splitting 32.2 coming home to touch first at 2:06.38, the #3 performance ever and an Olympic record #3 – W 200 Fly: Zhang Yufei was out like a shot, touching at 26.9 and 58.2. She didn't slow down either, taking gold in 2:03.86, the fastest time we've seen in the event since 2009, when the super-suited world record was set #2 – M 100 Free: The men's 100 free delivered just as expected, with Caeleb Dressel going out fast and Kyle Chalmers coming home strong. In the end, Dressel held on for gold, his first individual Olympic title, in an Olympic record time of 47.02 #1 – W 4x200 Free Relay: This race was nuts. Australia put their big guns first and surprisingly China was able to hang with them, battling for first the first 600 meters while the US did a good job at lurking in 3rd. Then Katie Ledecky dove in, splitting a massive 1:53 to pass Australia and nearly China as well, but Li Jingjie held on for China and delivered them gold, with all 3 teams going under the previous world record and China ultimately owning it in 7:40.33 BELLY FLOP OF THE DAY: Australia 4x200 Free Relay We feel guilty saying it because they were under the old world record, but there were so many situations where Australia wins this relay. The heavy favorite on paper, we thought this was a shoo-in for the Aussies, and leaving a 1:55.11 lead-off from prelims off of the finals relay coupled with Titmus adding a second from her individual left them vulnerable, and USA and China took full advantage HOT TOPIC OF THE DAY: Men's 200 IM Final - What the heck is going to Happen? With big-time players Daiya Seto, Michael Andrew, Wang Shun and Duncan Scott looming, it is anyone's race in the 200 IM final. We know Michael will be out fast at the 150, so ultimately it comes down to who can come home the strongest on the freestyle leg. He should have been on the 4x200 free relay, even Michael Phelps agrees with us. Although USA put up some very solid splits, we're confident they would have got on the podium with Dressel leading off. Would they have gotten past Britain? No way. But they get a medal with Caeleb on it. HOT TOPIC OF THE DAY: Men's 100 Free Final - What the heck is going to Happen? The men's 100 free depth is overwhelming, with 47.9 missing the final altogether. Caeleb Dressel is just 2nd seed with a 47.2, behind Kliment Kolesnikov's 47.11 European record. Mel says there's too much speed in this field and Kyle Chalmers won't even medal... I think he's a fool and that the defending Olympic champ will absolutely put himself into the top 3. All will be revealed in this next finals session in what could very well be the race of the century. Und mit Jung Young-sik wird der lässigste Spieler im Tableau schon vorab gekürt, der koreanische Star würde auch in Badelatschen bestens performen. Außerdem bieten die zwei im 31. Welcome to Make Sh*t Happen, This is three-minute Thursday, episode number 159. A lot of people think entrepreneurship is just starting your own business and having your own business and having the freedom of time. Having made a lot of money. Entrepreneurship is a way of life. It's a lifestyle change. When you an entrepreneur, you gotta make sure that how you can take risks. But at the same time, reduce the possibility of failing. And to reduce the possibility of losing everything but entrepreneurship, you have to take risks. But if people think entrepreneurship is freedom of time, I got to tell you, it really isn't. You got to be able to do a lot of things all at one time. And it's a lifestyle. You're constantly thinking. You're constantly evolving. You're constantly trying to grow. You're constantly trying to increase your footprint. All that is entrepreneurship. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sammyz/message

SHOW NOTES:  On this show...we're talking about settling in, taking life as it comes, and letting someone else lighten the load when needed. This show is about riding the wave and the wheelbarrow. You might find swimming upstream and waging a battle against the current the only possible way to survive. The thought of letting go, come what may, or not willing into existence everything you have, simply a pipe dream. But what if…..go on this fantastical journey with me, what if you stopped fighting and instead floated along with the current. Taking things as they come instead of worrying about what might happen if you aren't in control. What if….stay with me, you let someone else pick up the slack or start doing their share? Could you relax in the knowledge that all you have to focus on is doing your personal best, instead of saving the world? So if I said the words “go with the flow”, what ideas immediately come to mind? It might sound peaceful to you, a pass, being let off the hook. An excuse to relax or a direct order to chill out, you're not in charge.  It might elicit anxiety. A foreign concept where you relinquish control. Taking a step back, sacrificing structure for something more freeform.  I've always thought of myself as easy-going, a person who goes with the flow. Matt actually laughed out loud at this. He said I was anything but easy-going and then referred to my lists, my need to devise a plan in advance, my disappointment when things didn't turn out as I expected, my need for control, blah blah blah….I tuned him out at that point.  But he was right. I'm not easy-going but I do think I'm flexible. I do well with change and can shift gears with ease. Ok flexible, I'll accept that Karen Young asks a great question and gives her ideas in: Want to Be Happier? Letting Go of These Will Make it Happen - found on heysigmund.com 1-Other people's opinions. 2- Having to please other people. (Oh those expectations!) 3 -Saying yes to everyone. And their cousin's neighbor's mother. 4- Anything that stops you from asking for clarification, time, help, patience, understanding, space.  5- Judging, criticizing, complaining. (And if you're about to skip this because ‘you'd never do that to anyone, it includes doing it to yourself, too!) 6 -Excuses. 7 -Letting idiots, jerks, and toxics change who you are. 8 -Thinking only the big things should be celebrated. 9-Talking, shutting down, or getting busy – when it would be best to listen. 10 -The need to be right. 11 -Holding back. 12 -The need for control. 13-The Resistance to Change. 14 -Regret 15-Blame The waves are coming in, pounding the beach. What do you do? Stand there and take it? Pushing against them, getting the wind knocked out of you, standing up when you can, and going at it harder the next time. Or do you let the wave carry you, weightless over the swells and down the beach as you look up to the clear sky without worry as to where you will eventually come to shore?  Oh to be that trusting and vulnerable. The visual of that sounds so hopeful and peaceful. Then why, do we panic and paddle with all our might in the opposite direction? Convinced we have control over everything, even the unseen.  Acknowledging your power doesn't always mean being forceful. It can be the power to understand what's needed at any given moment. Knowing when to push and when to be carried.  Imaging a wheelbarrow. One wheel and two handles. A wheelbarrow doesn't have a steering wheel, pedals, or brakes. It's powerless for the passenger. All the control goes into the hands of the diver.  How do you feel about climbing in - arms and legs, hands and feet. Taking a rest and letting someone else lead the way? Cynthia Kane give us: 6 Ways to Let Others Help You found on bustle.com Shift Your Perspective Know Your Worth Know What you Believe Know Your Strengths Know when to Ask for Help Listen Have you ever heard, all good managers delegate all jobs? I bet in the same breath you're thinking, yeah but it's easier if I just do it myself, then I know it gets done, and to my standards.  Listen to yourself….to your standard? Maybe that's a bigger issue but your expectations are your expectations. Waiting for others to live up to them will produce anxiety, disappointment, and heartache.  What if you could effectively communicate what you want and need and then let others do THEIR BEST, would that be good enough?  Kisha Dingle is an entrepreneur, master filmmaker trainer and life coach as well as the founder of Visionary Legacy Project. She struggled with perfectionism and gives us her thoughts in THE PERFECTIONISM CURE: HOW TO STOP TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING RIGHT  5 Habits To Help You Rid Yourself Of Perfectionism Accept the fact that you are NOT the only person on the planet that can do anything right.  Redefine your standards.   Focus on WHY you're doing something, not WHAT you're doing. Learn to set realistic goals that you can enjoy achieving.  Learn how to celebrate your success.  CHALLENGE: take a time out. Relax and go with the flow. Let life carry you through the ebbs and flows. When in need, pull back and let someone else do the heavy lifting. Your strength is found within.    I Know YOU Can Do It!

After launching and hosting her own podcast, Made it Happen, in May of 2020, the podcast had grown rapidly and gained a lot of traction, which led to many amazing partnerships and sponsorships, along with being ranked in the Top 40 Entrepnureship Podcast in Canada. Through Made it Happen, Sarah found a true passion for podcasting and wanted to help other business owners and entrepreneurs launch a podcast of their own.  After being approached by many individuals, she saw the real need for this kind of service in the industry, as it continued to grow quickly. Welcome to Make Sh*t Happen. This is three minute Thursday, episode number 155. Hey, guys, I met somebody the other day, and these people are talking about, Hey, my business slow, blah, blah, blah. And we're like, Oh, man, these people are talking, well, you should advertise on Instagram and everything. And this Lady that we are talking to, she does hair and makeup, right. And before I get in the story, what the stories you give me? I got to say, time is a precious commodity. And when you are selling services and it's the time, time is basically your inventory. But time is something that once it goes, you can never get it back. Right? When you sell a tangible asset, when I say tangible, acid, like, it can be this Yeti Cup, it can be these headphones. It can be furniture, shirt, something tangible where you can touch, you know, you can set a price on that goods. And if someone don't want to pay that price, no problem. You'll still have that asset, and you can sell it to somebody else. And hopefully you'll get that price right. Unless you have that inventory for a long time now, you wantto get rid of it because that inventory is not making money is not turning. That's just one of the principles of business. But when you're selling services, when you're selling time, sometimes you have to bend your prices. That's what I feel like. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sammyz/message

David Giddens 09:40 (1 hour ago) to me Watch out for the athletes who make it look easy. They are the ones who have poured agonies of effort into every millisecond of their game. Olympic Gymnastics Champion Kyle Shewfelt is a prime example. The ‘Style of Kyle' was practically balletic, but every ‘effortless' gesture was the product of intense, obsessive hard work. CBC's Gymnastics and Trampoline analyst explores the many layers of mental and physical effort that excellence demands in his new autobiography ‘Make it Happen', but almost more fascinating than his years of chasing a perfect routine, is his time spent adrift when the competitive career ended. Kyle tried to fit into a few new careers, and he is no enemy of hard work...but it wasn't until he was slapped in the face by the obvious that he remembered- Gymnastics! That's what I love- I'll open a gym! Kyle and his fellow Calgarian Anastasia Bucsis broaden the talk to issues that define his sport internationally now. Why are male gymnasts revered in Germany and Japan, but elsewhere seen as lesser athletes than those in team contact sports? Why can't robo-judging take some of the bias out of artistic gymnastics scores? And why do Gymnastic routines and difficulty points never stay the same from one season to the next? You'll be watching Gymnastics like a pro when the Tokyo games get underway.

102: How to Dream Bigger When You're a Natural Operator & Planner

The Ops Authority

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2021 24:09

Are you a natural visionary, or do you have difficulty dreaming big? Today we are talking about how to dream big when you aren't wired to be a big visionary thinker. Dreaming Big How do you dream big when you're wired to plan small? I want to dream bigger, but I'm wired to be a support system and a servant of other people and it often leads me to dream small. Maybe you are the same way, and you aren't comfortable with the big futuristic dreams. You're telling yourself that since you are an operator you can't dream big, but that's just a lie. You can dream big, it's just uncomfortable for people who are wired in this way.    I've had to work on this myself, so I wanted to share with you how I've broken out of this thinking.   Don't Buy the Lie Telling yourself that you can't dream big is just a lie; we can dream just like anyone else! We all grew up dreaming about what we could be. Just because we are operators doesn't mean that we have zero percent vision.   “Our mind wants to protect us into thinking small because it's very safe.”   I am a risk averse person. I love to be second in command because it protects me as I am executing on someone else's dream. But if we are going to be in business for ourselves we will have to lean into the same things that we are helping our visionaries with. We have to flip the script and dream bigger than we ever have before.   Finding the Time You need time to make this happen, and because we aren't wired this way immediately it will take us some time to settle in. The biggest struggle is that you can't really control when these big dreams are going to come. You are not going to be able to plan this out on your calendar… it just doesn't work that way. Know that it takes time.   Space For me, the best dreaming has come outside of the places I frequent. I need a new environment and a new space, which allows me not to be confined to the typical things that I usually think of. If I want to think new thoughts and expand where I am, I need to leave the four walls of my office.   Leverage your community I love hearing about other people's businesses. I'm not looking to copy them, but I love learning about all of the options that are out there. I am part of a mastermind, which is my safe space to run to when I have big ideas. They also call me out when I'm dreaming too small. Having that community who are able to call me out and guide me when I am thinking too small is so valuable. You need a small and mighty community to lean on.    Why is dreaming a big deal? The same thing day after day is just not going to be fulfilling long term. You also run the risk of being outpaced by your competitors. If you don't continue to push the needle you may fall out of love with what you are doing and building.    “I am certain that your big dream becomes your vision, and your vision becomes your plan.”   We all love plans. So if you don't have new plans that you are creating, you will get stagnant,  and boredom in business is not a good combination. It is a challenge for operators to have that big visionary thinking, but it doesn't mean you are incapable of dreaming big.    I love consistency and methodical action, but if I do it inside of my own business, I'm going to get tired of it. This will lead to monotony and will constrict where you are going long term. You have to think bigger to avoid burnout and boredom.    5 Tips to Thinking Bigger Give yourself 5 years.  Start your thoughts with “By 2026, I will…” This puts you in a safe, defined container, but you are still able to see outside of today.   Start With You Rather Than the Business.  It's much easier to think about what our personal life is going to look like in five years because it's time bound. Think about you before the business and if there are things you want to accomplish in your personal life.   What Needs to Happen? What does your business need to look like if you want to make those personal things happen? This applies specifically to a lifestyle business. What do you need to generate and what does the business need to look like?  Does your business model change?  What if it Worked? If everything went better than imagined? What success would you have? What would you accomplish? What would your business look like?    Don't go directly to planning.  Sit with this big vision for a few weeks or months. When you feel like you can finally voice this new vision, then you can start planning. When it starts to feel safe, put the plans in writing and they will become more powerful once you get to the point where you can speak them.   “Give yourself the space and grace to create the dream before you start breaking it down.” Weekly Ops Activity Come into our facebook group and let us know... if everything went according to plan, what is one success that you would have in the next 5 years of your business?   Episode Sponsor: As operators, one of our key roles is to keep the ship sailing for the businesses we support, and a core component of that is to document systems and processes. Our visionary CEOs that we support don't have the interest in doing this themselves, but they know it has to get done… which is where you come in.   There are lots of ways to document processes, but I want to share with you a powerful tool that I've used that I think you are going to love, called Sweet Process. It allows you to create systems and processes and then turn them into step-by-step instructions or a checklist. It also allows you to have a centralized place for anyone on your team to access your procedures and processes at any time.    The best way to know if Sweet Process works for you is to start using it! Keys To The Shop : Equipping the Coffee Retail Professional

Baristas are often the subject of much complaining from leadership. "They just don't get how hard it is" we hear them say. We talked about this last week in the Shift Break "Understanding and Bitterness". Baristas however, are also just as likely to construct the same type of unreasonable expectations of owners and leaders that they don't want put upon them.  Today we are going to be chatting about the barista's role in all this and continuing to emphasis the need for mutual empathy, boundaries, and communication.  Related episodes: Understanding and Bitterness Who you are & What you Do   031 : Essential Advice for New Baristas : Tips to help you successfully navigate and thrive in your new coffee career   044 : Navigating Mistakes and Failure : Best Practices for overcoming the problems we bring with us to the cafe   077 : How you can Happen to your Career w/ Scott Anthony Barlow : A frame work for finding the right work 111 : Self Care 101: Taking care of yourself while taking care of others 125 : Confidence in Conflict w/ Kwame Christian : A framework for Compassionate Curiosity Visit our Sponsors!
