THCC Husk Speaker: Katie McClurgSermon Recorded on: 30/03/2025 Main Passage: Luke 6:27-36
THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 23/03/2025 Main Passage: Luke 6:12-26 Reflection: Have you got any big decisions to make? What can you learn from how Jesus made this important decision? What tone of voice do you hear Jesus using as He lists these blessings and woes? If this sounds like bad news for you, do you think you might be mis-hearing Him? What difference does it make that Jesus Himself experienced all of the troubles that He describes here - poverty, hunger, grief and being hated? Are you confident in being on Team Jesus? What difference does that make?
THCC Husk Speaker: Darius Pantea Sermon Recorded on: 09/03/2025 Main Passage: Luke 5:17-26 Reflection: On Friendship: What kind of friends do we have? (Proverbs 18:24) What kind of friend are we? (Proverbs 17:17) What does friendship look like as a choice? (Proverbs 12:26) What does friendship with Jesus look like? (John 21:5 Jesus is calling the disciples "friends") On Failure: In what way did the Pharisees fail to realise that Jesus is God? On Faith: How have we seen faith in action in Luke 5:18-20? And Luke 5: 24-25?
THCC HuskSpeaker: Caroline MillarSermon Recorded on: 02/03/2025Main Passage: Luke 5:1-11; 27-32Reflection:When Jesus calls he interrupts the disciple's normal routine. Where are you seeing signs of Jesus calling you or others? Where have you experienced him interrupting your life? When Jesus called the disciples, they "left everything and followed him". Caroline spoke about Jesus calling us today, as he does so what in your life needs to be left behind?
THCC HuskSpeaker: Bex WhiteSermon Recorded on: 23/02/2025Main Passage: Luke 4:31-44Reflection:We had to reach around a lot of thorns to get to the fruit this week. Were there any aspects of the sermon that were hard for you to hear? Might God be inviting you to bring those things to Him? If so, how will you do that?We heard time and again how Jesus has the last word. Where in your life do you need encouragement to pray for His will to be done and His kingdom to be done? Who in your life needs to hear His words of release?
THCC HuskSpeaker: Tony UddinSermon Recorded on: 16/02/2025Main Passage: Luke 4:14-30Reflection:Tony pointed out that Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit - this involved prayer, fasting and resisting temptation. What might it look like for you?Jesus read from Isaiah and said that He was the fulfilment of what He had read. Do we read the Bible by placing Jesus at the centre or do we have a tendency to place ourselves in that place? The Gospel is such good news! Jesus sets the prisoner free, He opens blind eyes and releases those who are oppressed. What has He done in your life? Why don't you find some ways this week to share this great news with others?
THCC HuskSpeaker: Matt BrinkleySermon Recorded on: 09/02/2025Main Passage: Luke 4:1-13
THCC HuskSpeaker: Bex WhiteSermon Recorded on: 02/02/2025Main Passage: Luke 3:21-38Reflection:Jesus is the beloved Son, and He is the servant that Isaiah spoke of. Reflect: what does knowing Him as Son and servant mean for you?Jesus made a way for us to be restored as children of God, and to be grafted in to His family tree. Is there anything in your life that might look different to you if you see yourself as a child of God?
THCC HuskSpeaker: Tony UddinSermon Recorded on: 12/01/2025Main Passage: Luke 2:41-52Reflection: One of the themes of this was that Mary and Joseph were obedient to God and that Jesus also modelled obedience in part by being concerned to do his Father's business. What are the areas of your life that the Lord is challenging you about obedience in? The passage shows us both the humanity and divinity of Jesus. What does it mean for us to see Jesus in this way? v52 shows us that Jesus grew in wisdom and stature as a young man. What challenges you about this In both how you see Jesus but also in how you approach your own growth?
THCC Husk Speaker: Iain Millar Sermon Recorded on: 22/12/2024 Main Passage: Luke 2:1-21 Reflection: ‘[Mary] placed him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guest room' Luke 2:7; what difference does it make that Jesus was born in such humble circumstances? ‘The sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays' Malachi 4:2; where do you most need the light and healing of Jesus to be seen? Pray about these things. ‘Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God' Luke 2:13; an army of angels appeared at Jesus birth - how does this and these other passages - Matthew 13:24-30,36-43; Matthew 26:47-56; Revelation 19:11-16 - help us to understand the power and authority of Jesus?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 15/12/2024 Main Passage: Luke 1:39-56 Reflection: In both Mary and Elizabeth we see them hearing from God, responding in faith and being filled with the Holy Spirit. What can we learn about faith and obedience from that? Mary's Song was a response of joy toward God. Real worship is initiated by the Holy Spirit and is a response toward God. What are you rejoicing about in your life this week? Mary's Song reminds us of the nature of God's kingdom as opposed to the kingdoms of this world. What do we learn about God and His way of doing things from these verses?
THCC Husk Cast: THCC Members! Recorded on: 08/12/2024 Main Passage: Isaiah 9:6-7 Reflection: (ask yourself or your child) What did the anchor represent in the story?
THCC Husk Speaker: John Day Sermon Recorded on: 01/12/2024 Main Passage: Luke 1:26-38 Reflection: What are your "awe & wonder" moments from Luke 1? Have you ever thought that you too are highly favoured as a result of Jesus coming? Read John 1:16 "Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given". Speak these three versions of Luke 1 v 37 over whatever you are currently facing: "No word from God will ever fail", "God's word will never lose it power", "With God nothing shall be impossible".
THCC Husk Speaker: Ayo Adeniji Sermon Recorded on: 24/11/2024 Main Passage: Luke 1:57-80 Reflection: In the gospel of Jesus, and in the stories you read in the bible (for example the birth of John the Baptist) Do you see God at work, do you see His mercy and grace? Do you recognise God's mercies in your life? God is a covenant keeping God, and His mercies are new every morning. Therefore we can trust Him. We also ought to respond in Joy, praise, obedience and faith, when we see God's mercies at work.
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 17/11/2024 Main Passage: Luke 1:5-25 Reflection: Are you able to see and experience God's work even when things seem tough? John's ministry was to prepare people's hearts for Jesus. In the run up to the Christmas season, take time to reflect on Christ coming into the world and to honestly ask yourself, what is the state of your heart? Do we need to prepare our hearts afresh with a new sense of repentance - turning round from living our way and to live in obedience to God? In what ways might God want to use you during this week to point others towards Jesus?
THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 10/11/2024 Main Passage: Luke 1:1-4 Reflection: What does Luke set out to do? How might Luke's gospel help you know about Jesus, and become more like Him? We heard several different analogies for faith: Jenga... Lego... a bridge. Did any of these resonate with you at this time? As my aunt would ask: have you told Jesus about it? What themes in Luke are you most looking forward to uncovering, and are there any that make you nervous?
THCC Husk Speaker: Anni Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 03/11/2024 Main Passage: Luke 4:16-21; 42-44 Reflection: Anni spoke about sharing faith in the context of Christian social action projects. She highlighted the fact that we can often end up excluding spoken explanation of the Gospel from them and that they are a lot worse off for this. How do you intentionally look for opportunities to share your faith with others both in word and deed? How could we find creative ways to share the gospel within social action projects in ways which are culturally sensitive and non-coercive? Why are we hesitant at times about sharing faith? Do we need to be more used to taking risks?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 20/10/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 3:14-17 Reflection: What are the challenges and opportunities for you with your friendship group and work environment as you look to faithfully live out the Bible's teaching around social and moral issues? 1 Peter 3 speaks about doing good to all and being ready to to give a reason for the hope that is in you? Do you find that your life provokes questions from your non Christian relatives, friends, neighbours or colleagues? Do you feel equipped to answer them? How might you grow in this? Tony spoke of not just answering people's questions but also questioning their answers. How do we do this lovingly and respectfully but also in an appropriately provocative way?
THCC Husk Speaker: Adele May Sermon Recorded on: 13/10/2024 Main Passage: 2 Corinthians 4:5-18 Reflection: Are there areas of your life, or in our world, where you struggle to believe Jesus can bring good news? If if you feel able to, consider prayerfully sharing this with a friend or leader Do you tend to have a more earthly, or a more eternal mindset? If more earthly, try to spend some time reflecting on some of the passages mentioned in the talk (2 Cor 4:16-18, Heb 10:23, Heb 12:2-3 among others) Do you feel an urgency to share the good news about Jesus with others? What factors might be dulling that urgency or holding you back from sharing?
THCC Husk Speaker: Caroline Millar Sermon Recorded on: 06/10/2024 Main Passage: 2 Corinthians 4:1-7 Reflection: John Stott spoke about "double listening", listening to God and immersing ourselves in His word (scripture, bible) and listening to the world "seeking to sympathise with it and to seek grace to discover how the gospel relates to it". What does double listening look like in your week and in your context? Our vision at THCC is to give every single man, woman and child in Tower Hamlets (and beyond) the opportunity to hear, understand and respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Spend some time reflecting on what this would actually look and feel like if this vision was to become a reality. How does this make you feel? What excites you? What concerns you? Caroline spoke about intentional missional living being about having a perspective over our lives that sees us as missionaries where God has placed us. Who are the people that God is placing in your life? Where are you seeing God already at work in their lives?
THCC Husk Speaker: Katie McClurg Sermon Recorded on: 15/09/2024 Main Passage: Revelation 3:1-16 (Letter to Sardis) Reflection: The people of Sardis were found to be protecting their reputation instead of their spiritual lives. Take a moment and think about: How alive are you in your faith? Are you seeing the gifts of the spirit demonstrated in your life or are you drifting? What is standing between you and God, what might you be prioritising instead? How can you take a simple step today to strengthen your faith by changing something about your relationship to the answer to question 2?
THCC Husk Speaker: John Day Sermon Recorded on: 08/09/2024 Main Passage: Revelation 2:18-29 (Letter to Thyatira) Reflection: What difference does it make when you consider that the one who has been given all authority sends us out to the nations with His authority (Rev 2: 26, Matt 28:18-19)? Are there "so called deep secrets" that you are being drawn into and distracted by (Rev 2:24)? Remember "the main things are the plain things and the plain things are the main things". Take time, if you are married, to discuss what it means to exercise authority over one another's bodies. Enjoy taking authority over Satan by your sexual intimacy (1 Corinthians 7:4-5). Consider the church responsibility we share to exercise loving authority by pointing out a brother or sister's sin in order "to win them over" (Matthew 18:15).
THCC Husk Speaker: Simon Kempson Sermon Recorded on: 01/09/2024 Main Passage: Revelation 2:12-17 (Letter to Pergamum) Reflection: In the talk at Husk we were asked what might be written about us if we were in Revelation, and whether Jesus has first place in our hearts. If Jesus were to write about us as He did to the Churches in Relevation, what might He say? What are in danger of becoming idols in our lives? Is the good in our lives taking the place of the best?
THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 11/08/2024 Main Passage: Revelation 1:1 - 2:7 Reflection: Who or what is the Angel of a church? Ephesus is efficient and effective and doing more. What could possibly be wrong? If you were part of this church how would you "conquer" or "overcome" and what would be the consequence?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 04/08/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 13:15-22 Reflection: Nehemiah came back to a people who had fallen back into sin that they had previously repented of. Take some time to think about your life. Are there any ways this is true of you? Are there things that you once had moved on from that you are falling back into? The idea of dealing with issues of sin at the gates can be quite a helpful picture. How are you guarding the gates of your life? Often that is the things that influence our hearts and minds that we let in through our eyes, ears and mouths. What challenges you in this? This was our last talk from Nehemiah. What things have most impacted you as we have looked at it?
THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 28/07/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 13:1-14; 13:23-31 Reflection: How is your situation similar to that of the people in Nehemiah's day? You might want to think about pressures on one side, and temptation on the other. We looked at two ways in which Jeremiah was 'ruthless' - can you remember them? Hint - one was to do with a book of the Bible. We saw a pretty relatable example of how things slide when a leader is away. What does Jesus' promise in John 14, of leaving us the Spirit, mean for you? How is your situation different from the people of Nehemiah's day as a result?
THCC Husk Speaker: Matt Brinkley Sermon Recorded on: 14/07/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 12:27-47 Reflection: Before the celebration happened, the Levites (v30) purified the people, the gates and the wall. Is there sin in my life that affects people, things and places around me, where I need Jesus to come in to cleanse and heal right now? God gave the people joy (v43). The people responded to it, but the source was God-given. It is easy to praise God when we feel good. But how can I be choosing to rejoicing in the good times and the bad times too, reminding myself of His intervention for me and our church?
THCC Husk Speaker: Katie McClurg Sermon Recorded on: 07/07/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 11:1 - 12:26 Reflection: Katie spoke from Nehemiah 11:1-12:26, on the repopulation of Jerusalem; a holy city, a holy people and a holy God. It's a great reminder that God has knows where his people are at all times, and has a diverse design for the city. Take a moment to reflect and give thanks for how Jesus redeems the manmade efforts of the altar with the cross, the covenant with his blood and the temple with his body. We have access to holiness daily because of what Jesus did. Katie encouraged us to think about whether we are in this place by chance or by choice, how might you make steps to choose to invest in the spaces you occupy, including THCC? Be encouraged that we need people in all areas of the city, you are doing redemptive work, carrying the hope of Christ into your spaces. No role is more important or impressive than another. How might you seek renewal in your day to day? How does your perspective need to shift to see your spaces with a holy perspective? God has a design for cities - take some time and ask him to show you your role in this one.
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 30/06/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 10:32-39 Reflection: The passage speaks of the people taking responsibility for the house of God. What might that mean to you in terms of your involvement in THCC as a local church but also our collective task of making disciples of Jesus? The passage speaks of giving tithes, offerings and first-fruits to God. Giving of our time, talents and finances to the work of God is a key part of Christian discipleship. What does it mean for you to use the principle of giving God the best of your time? Are you being faithful in your financial giving? When did you last review it?
THCC Husk Speaker: Caroline Millar Sermon Recorded on: 23/06/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 10:31 Reflection: Sabbath is a gift that God gives us to live out His wonderful gospel. Have you been fully receiving the gift of Sabbath and if so what does this look like? If not, what is preventing you from resting? Caroline spoke of Sabbath being: An act of Resistance and Remembrance - to stop and remember God. An act of Rest - to rest our whole selves: physically, mentally and emotionally and spiritually. An act of Reconnection - to God, each other and our future hope through worship. Which of these resonates most with you and why? Sabbath was a communal practice. What ways can we as a church be practicing Sabbath together to reset together? (This question would be good to discuss with others). Sabbath is an opportunity to experience and show a foretaste of new creation. How often do you think about new creation? What are you most looking forward to? What of our future hope can be experienced in part today?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 16/06/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 10:30 Reflection: One of the things that we see in Nehemiah 10 is that the people are trying to address the areas in which they had repeatedly failed. What are the areas of your life that you have often been drawn to sin through? What are you doing to try to change that? A large part of the message centred on the fact that it is wrong for Christians to date or marry non Christians. Would you be able to explain to someone why this is? If this is an area that is particularly a challenge for you, please do take the time to talk with someone about it. Tony talked about the importance of families (not just biological families but also wider 'households' being a place of discipleship and where we remind each other of God's faithfulness. What did this look like in your life?
THCC Husk Speaker: Phil Elbourne Sermon Recorded on: 09/06/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 9:38 - 10:29 Reflection: We encountered a long list of names. How do you feel when you read passages like these? Be honest - do you skip over them? And yet, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Dwell again on Nehemiah 10:1-27, sit with it for a while and ask God to show you something new in it. Read Matthew 21:28-31 again, the parable of the two sons. Is there any part of your life where your words to God don't match up with your actions? Where your walls have crumbled, what small action can you begin to take daily to rebuild, "brick by brick"?
THCC Husk Speaker: Ayo Adeniji Sermon Recorded on: 02/06/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 9:22-37 Reflection: How often have we experienced the Lord's goodness & rest yet respond with unfaithfulness? God is a righteous God. He has to be just! There are consequences to our actions/sin. Yet He is merciful Have you repented & confessed Christ as your Lord and Saviour? What does repentance look like? Meditating and memorising the Word of God Godly sorrow over our sinfulness Confessing our sins to God and to one another What else? Search the scriptures this week.
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 19/05/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 9:9-21 Reflection: Tony centred on the need to remember God's goodness and provision as well as his compassion and willingness to forgive us when we sin. He also talked about the need for us to recognise our sin and turn back to God. Why do you think the priests went to such length to remind the people of their history? In what way can this help us? What can we do to regularly remind ourselves of Gods character? What are the ways that we forget God and end up worshipping idols?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 05/05/2024 Main Passage: Nehemiah 9:1-5 Reflection questions: The gathering of the people that the passage speaks about was partly to have God's word read to them. How do you approach the Bible? Is reading it a priority? The people were deeply impacted by being taught God's word. They wept and confessed their sin in response to it. How's God speaking into your life. Are you regularly being convicted of sin by his Word and Spirit?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tony Uddin Sermon Recorded on: 21/04/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 5:6-14 Reflection questions: The passage links humility with casting our burdens and anxiety onto Jesus. Why do you think this is? What challenges you about this? Tony made the point that we should always be impressed by God and aware of the devil and not the other way around. What areas of your life does the enemy have a foothold in? How are you looking for God's grace to strengthen you? who can you talk to about that? The passage speaks of the importance of believers encouraging one another and standing firm together. What steps are you taking this week to build community within the church? In what ways are you saying 'No' to isolation and selfishness?
THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 14/04/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 5:1-5 Reflection questions: • Why do you think the Bible has more to say about character than structures? • In what way is Peter's life story of denial, redemption and martyrdom encouraging? In what way is it challenging?• 'Clothe yourself with humility' is an active process. How can you do that this week, with your eyes on the ultimate servant King?
THCC Husk Speaker: Matt Brinkley Sermon Recorded on: 07/04/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 4:12-19 Reflection questions: Peter gives the churches 5 tips for how to stay rooted in Jesus through trials and ordeals around: expectations, looking towards God's glory, dealing with insults, identity and our feelings towards others. How today can we prepare for future suffering to come, knowing that all of us at times will go through various ordeals? Which voices around me (insulting ones) could distract me from my identity in Christ? From V17-18: judgement awaits the non-believer. How can I have any bitterness towards others be turned into compassion?
THCC Husk Speaker: Tim White Sermon Recorded on: 24/03/2024 Main Passage: Matthew 21:1-11 Reflection questions: Jesus is King because He is King. We do not make Him King. We simply accept or reject His Kingship. Do you accept or reject it? Are there any areas of your life you reject His Kingship? Seek to speak to another believer about this, and bring it to Jesus in prayer. "Rulers of the gentiles lord it over them", while Jesus "came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life." Reflect on Jesus' humble, servant Kingship today. Consider how it differs from the world around us. Having received such generous grace from The King - how can you show generous grace to someone who needs it?
THCC Husk Speaker: Adele May Sermon Recorded on: 17/03/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 4:8-11 Reflection questions: Are there any topics, or people, where it is particularly difficult for you to show love 'above all'? Bring these things to God- wrestle with them and ask God to give you His eyes and heart for these situations. How does the concept of 'risky' generous hospitality make you feel? Are there any areas where you could challenge yourself to step out further in this? Reflect on your gifts- are you stewarding and using them to the best of your ability? If you're not sure of your gifting, ask your Life Group and God to show and tell you!
THCC Husk Speaker: Matt Brinkley Sermon Recorded on: 10/03/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 4:1-7 Reflection questions: The passage is about modelling Jesus attitude. He suffered for us. We now life a new transformed life. Others are set to be judged by God, but we can join Jesus in His mission to spread the Gospel. Questions for reflection: Hands: How am I living the rest my life for the will of God? Where can I go and spread little stories about what God has saved you from? Head: Whilst people may feel uncomfortable with my decision to follow Jesus compared with their lifestyle, why might I still have compassion for them? (Tip: eternal perspective) Heart: How can I walk the balance of living IN the world, but not being OF the world?
THCC Husk Speakers: Katie McClurg Sermon Recorded on: 03/03/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 3:8-22 Reflection questions: What is your hope anchored to? If it's not to Jesus, retrace your steps to that hope - when did you last have it? How might that hope change the way that you deal with your suffering? Take a moment to pray for those around the world who are suffering for their faith like the believers in the early church.
THCC Husk Speakers: Iain Millar and Caroline Millar Sermon Recorded on: 25/02/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 3:1-7 Reflection questions: Read Philipians 2:37, Ephesians 5:21 and Matthew 20:25-28. Do these verses change our understanding of what it means for a Christian to submit to another person? What is our responsibility as Christians when someone submits to us? 1 Peter 3:4 speaks of "the unfading beauty of gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight". Iain and Caroline said that gentleness here means "strength under control" and quietness means the inner quietness that comes from trusting God in every circumstance. For all of us, men included, how are we doing in the area of gentleness and trust? In 1 Peter 3:7, husbands are instructed to "live with their wives in an understanding way" and to "show honour" to them. For women what are some areas where you feel that men could be more considerate and honouring towards you? For men, what is your reaction or response to this verse?
THCC Husk Speaker: Gary Davidge Sermon Recorded on: 18/02/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 2:11-25 Reflection questions: What is God calling you to? How do you live the life you are called to?
THCC Husk Speaker: Caroline Millar Sermon Recorded on: 11/2/24 Main Passage: 1 Peter 2 v 4-10 Reflection and Application: Jesus is described as our Cornerstone that we are building on. In what ways does having Christ as our foundational 'cornerstone' give us security in our identity? What other things are we at risk of building our identity on instead of Christ? How does the image of the church building built as a spiritual house, a place where God dwells, help us with our relationships with one another? How does being part of the "royal priesthood" impact the way in which we go about our daily lives?
THCC Husk Speaker: Luke Hastings Sermon Recorded on: 4/2/2024 Main Passage: Acts 2:42-47
THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 21/11/2024 Main Passage: 1 Peter 1:10-21 We looked at how Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection were foretold. So what? What "empty way of life" was handed down to you? What does it feel like to swim against the lazy river? What do 'hope' and 'fear' mean in the context of 1 Peter? What do they not mean?

Continuing our sermon series exploring how we are a Christ centred church with a focus on mission. THCC Husk Speaker: Bex White Sermon Recorded on: 17/9/2023 Main Passage: Acts 1: 1-11 Reflection and Application: We heard how the disciples brought their own hopes and agenda to Jesus, but God's plan was so much bigger. What hopes and dreams might God be calling you to bring to Him to be made more expansive and beyond yourself and your circle? Are you ready for mission in the knowledge of Christ's work, friendship with God, and Holy Spirit power? If not, who can you talk and pray with this week, and ongoing? What practical step could you take this week to be a real partner with one of our global missions friends? Thinking about how you could 'pray, go or give' might help you turn this into a concrete response to God's call.
