Pastor Jim unpacks the story of Naboth and King Ahab in 1 Kings 21–22, highlighting the spiritual battle between righteousness and corruption. Naboth stands firm on God's promises, refusing to trade away his inheritance—even at the cost of his life. Ahab's abuse of power and Jezebel's manipulation lead to judgment, but not before exposing how the schemes of the enemy mirror our own modern temptations. Jim points us to Jesus, the better Naboth, who stood firm in obedience, was falsely accused, and secured victory through the cross and resurrection.
Temptation is as constant and real as gravity—a daily battle that every believer faces. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar remind Christians that they are never alone in this struggle, and the enemy wants them to believe otherwise. Isolation is one of Satan's strongest tools, but God calls believers to live in the light and walk in community. When one believer confesses a struggle, another can offer encouragement, reminding them that being tempted is part of the Christian journey. A fear of the Lord becomes a shield against compromise. Every time Jesus was tempted, He responded with Scripture. In the same way, when believers store the Word in their hearts, the Holy Spirit brings it to mind at crucial moments, arming them with truth that weakens the power of temptation.Prayer is to be ongoing. Even Elijah, who shared the same human nature, prayed earnestly and witnessed the power of God. The model of praying to be delivered from temptation and evil is not optional—it is essential. Spiritual discipline plays a critical role in a believer's strength. Fasting, once a common practice in the early church, has been overlooked by many today. In avoiding legalism, many have also rejected discipline, but Scripture teaches that while salvation is a gift of grace, Christians are created for good works. Discipline, when motivated by love for God, helps conform believers to the image of Christ.Resisting temptation is not about earning favor, but about growing in Christlikeness. God has predestined His people to be conformed to His Son, and resistance is a part of that transformation. Humility is key—recognizing that apart from God, nothing is deserved but judgment. Gratitude flows from this awareness. The best way to flee temptation is to have somewhere better to run. Redirecting desires toward Christ changes the battle entirely. Believers are the reward of Jesus's obedience, and understanding His love is stronger than any willpower.Standing strong also means running with the right people. Christians grow when they walk with others who are running the race well. Community, scripture, prayer, evangelism, and fellowship all strengthen the soul. Ephesians teaches that the real battle is spiritual and that the armor of God is essential. Believers must be aware of their weaknesses, seek counsel, pursue repentance, and embrace accountability. Like Joseph before Potiphar's wife, believers must refuse, reason, resist—and then run. Those who believe they cannot fall are often the first to do so. Temptation is real, but so is the strength found in Christ.Send us a textThanks for listening! I used to think resisting temptation was all about sheer determination—trying harder, staying disciplined, and pushing through. At first, it worked. I'd rack up a few wins and feel confident. But then, without warning, I'd stumble—hard. The harder I fought, the more exhausting it became. Failure wasn't just frustrating; it was defeating. It wasn't just temptation either. I saw the same struggle in trying to control outcomes, fix relationships, or manage stress. No matter how much effort I gave, I kept falling short. That's when I realized I'd been making a critical mistake—a mistake James warns us about. But the solution? It wasn't at all what I expected… Welcome to the Daily Devo. Our text today is James 4:6-7 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. — James 4:6-7 James provides a vital reminder for believers, especially those weary from spiritual effort—or, more precisely, those relying too heavily on their own efforts. There is a balance when it comes to striving in faith. Yes, we are called to exert effort in our spiritual lives. Our faith is evidenced by good works, and we are instructed to resist the devil and reflect the character of Jesus. However, there is a point where effort crosses into self-reliance, and we begin to trust in our ability to resist and reflect rather than in God's power. This tipping point varies for each of us, but it's identifiable—it's where personal pride starts to take over. Pride has all kinds of manifestations, unique to each of us, that hinder grace. I don't know what manifestation of pride hinders God's grace in your life but here is a quick list of ten and how they might hinder God's grace in your life. 10 Forms of Pride That Hinder Grace 1. Self-Reliance: Description: Trusting in your own abilities instead of God. Hindrance: Blocks dependence on God's help. 2. Spiritual Pride: Description: Seeing yourself as more righteous than others. Hindrance: Undermines humility needed for grace. 3. Stubbornness: Description: Refusing to submit or admit wrongs. Hindrance: Resists repentance and surrender. 4. Intellectual Pride: Description: Trusting your knowledge over God's wisdom. Hindrance: Limits faith and openness to God's guidance. 5. Relational Pride: Description: Refusing to forgive or reconcile. Hindrance: Blocks grace that comes through restoration. 6. Achievement Pride: Description: Taking full credit for your successes. Hindrance: Ignores God as the source of all success. 7. Reputational Pride: Description: Obsessing over reputation or approval. Hindrance: Focuses on people instead of God. 8. Moral Pride: Description: Believing rule-keeping makes you superior. Hindrance: Replaces mercy with self-sufficiency. 9. Cultural/Social Pride: Description: Thinking your background is better than others. Hindrance: Breeds division and exclusivity. 10. Defensive Pride: Description: Overreacting to criticism or correction. Hindrance: Rejects the growth grace provides. When pride takes the reins—whatever form it takes—it drives you to rely on your own strength instead of resting in God's grace. We all have a tipping point where pride manifests in our lives. Today, take a moment to identify yours. Recognize how it hinders your faith and blocks the flow of God's grace. Confess it in the comments, pray against it, and surrender it to God. Remember: the most righteous effort is not working harder but letting God's grace work where your effort falls short. Remember, pride strives, but grace abides. #OvercomingPride, #GraceAbides, #James4 ASK THIS: Which form of pride resonates most with your current struggles? How has pride blocked the flow of God's grace in your life? In what areas are you striving instead of abiding in God's strength? How can you practically submit to God in your daily battles? DO THIS: Identify one form of pride hindering grace in your life, confess it to God, and ask Him for the humility to surrender it. PRAY THIS: Father, I confess the pride in my heart that hinders Your grace. Teach me to submit fully to You and rely on Your strength instead of my own. Amen PLAY THIS: Gracefully Broken.

The book of Hebrews counsels us to come to God for grace in times of need through the ministry of Jesus, our great High Priest, who can sympathize with us in our weaknesses. But, was he really tested in all things as we are? Is His humanity genuine? When tested, how did He respond? Examining the Gospel account of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness helps us answer these questions. It directs us toward how we should learn to pursue obedience through Jesus in the power of the Spirit. Application QuestionsHave you meditated on the reality that Jesus experienced the fullness of human frailty? When you experience times of trial or testing, do you see them as God's gift to you as a means to draw you closer to Himself through Christ?Do you believe that Jesus can have genuine compassion for you in your trials?Do you fight temptation with Scripture? What is preventing you from doing so?Do you trust God enough to allow His timing to reign in your circumstances? Are you tempted to take matters into your own hands rather than trusting in God to provide during times of difficulty? ★ Support this podcast ★

James 1:13-15Like erosion temptation is quiet and subtle. This is why we need to stay on guard. If we don't fight temptation daily we'll eventually compromise.
Considering a few strategies to resist temptation.
Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. — Galatians 5:2-3 CALL OUT: Today's callout goes to Keron Taylor from Sterling, VA, who recently signed up for video access on our website. Are you feeling the pressure in our culture to conform to practices when they contradict the Gospel of Grace? We have discovered through Galatians that circumcision was the big issue in these churches. Jewish teachers were putting pressure on non-Jewish new male converts to fit in with the new Christian culture by being circumcised. In the following ten verses, Paul will be very direct about addressing this matter among men. What I find interesting about this issue is that new converts, and even some well-known believers, are falling for it. They are succumbing to the pressure to conform because they are convinced there is no harm, and it might enhance their relationship with God. This is evidence that the peer pressure we faced as young teens will manifest into adulthood. Peer pressure never goes away. You don't outgrow it. You are going to experience it everywhere, including in the church. Sometimes, this peer pressure can be good, helping us avoid sinful actions. On the other hand, sometimes it can be bad, leading us toward feelings, beliefs, and actions that are abominable in our relationship with God. The latter is Paul's concern here. We often succumb to social pressure because we give too much credence to the people who expose certain ideas. For example, let's consider some of the comments made by Whoopi Goldberg just a few days ago on The View. She used one of the Ten Commandments to justify abortion. Obviously, you and I believe her statement is blasphemous. But don't forget some people give Goldberg and the things she says a lot of credence, so much so they will follow her right off the cliff in blasphemy. And that is Paul's concern here. That new converts are going to follow false teachers right off the cliff into blasphemy. But did you know there is a way to test when a false teaching or false teacher is pressuring us? The test is quite simple. Paul presents it in our text, in verse three. It's this: Play the principle out practically. Here is what Paul says: I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. All you need to do is play the concept out. If it plays out and doesn't align with the intended outcomes of the Gospel, then it's not the Gospel. And if it isn't the Gospel, then don't listen to it, don't be pressured to do it, and definitely don't share it with others. #FreedomInChrist #RejectingConformity #GospelOverCulture #DiscerningTruth #StandingFirm ASK THIS: How can we discern between beneficial peer pressure that aligns with the Gospel and harmful pressure that leads us away from Christ? Reflecting on your own experiences, what are some practical steps you can take to guard yourself against conforming to cultural practices that contradict the principles of grace found in the Gospel? DO THIS: Test the pressure by playing it out. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me to stand firm in the truth of your Gospel, resisting the pressures of this world that lead me astray. Grant me discernment to recognize and reject falsehoods, and empower me to live boldly according to your Word. Amen. PLAY THIS: Pressure.
Takeaways Man is capable of resisting temptation, as demonstrated by examples from the Bible. Temptation itself is not sinful; it is how we respond to it that matters. Jesus, as our high priest, understands our struggles with temptation and provides strength and guidance. To resist temptation, we should flee from it and set ourselves up for success. Set yourself up for success by fleeing from temptation and turning to God. Recognize that even strong individuals can fall if not careful. Take extreme measures to overcome sexual temptations, such as deleting social media accounts and breaking off unhealthy relationships.
