Rising demand for electricity, largely to power the artificial intelligence boom, has stirred a resurgence in nuclear energy. Older plants like Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania are being brought out of retirement, but there’s also investment in smaller-scale reactors with different designs. The fresh interest in nuclear generation has also renewed discussion about how to build these facilities ethically, in other words, with an approach that’s sensitive to the needs of the community and the world at large. Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino spoke with Aditi Verma, assistant professor of nuclear engineering at the University of Michigan, who co-created an undergrad course about ethically designing modern nuclear facilities. Verma discussed her effort to train young engineers to transform the industry. For some engineers, it’s also renewed a discussion about how to build these facilities ethically. Dr. Bjorn Mercer chats with APU professor Dr. Chapla Verma about her forthcoming book “Lotus in the Desert-Mahapajapati: A Theravada Nunnery in California,” which explores the challenges and resilience of Theravada Buddhist nuns, particularly those at the Mahapajapati Monastery in California. Verma shares how she became interested in this topic and dives into the struggles these women face in a tradition where full ordination for nuns has often been restricted or outright denied, especially in places like Myanmar and Thailand. Through compelling personal stories, she highlights the perseverance of these nuns as they navigate strict monastic precepts, social barriers, and institutional resistance in their pursuit of equality within Buddhism. Their experiences shed light on the broader conversation around religious freedom, gender disparity, and the struggle for recognition in deeply rooted traditions.  Hosted on Acast.

Shailu Verma, CEO and Co-Founder of Mila Health is addressing missed appointments and no-shows for appointments to improve patient outcomes, drive staff efficiency, and reduce clinician stress. The Mila platform aims to automate time-consuming tasks, allowing staff to manage their schedules and patient flow better. This AI-powered assistant drives patient engagement by reminding about appointments, checking on medication adherence, and helping address social determinants of health that may be barriers to care. Shailu explains, "These are conditions where a patient has to manage many of these elements that I just talked about. And because the conditions don't have low equity, as we would call it, patients tend to have a relatively high no-show rate. If you look at chronic, which is almost 50% of the spend in healthcare, the no-show rates where patients aren't able to keep up with their care plans is anywhere between 36% to 45% in some cases." "There are these external variables around a healthcare plan. I call them externalities. They're all elements that create no-show rates and barriers for us to complete the care journey. And there are answers to these barriers. There are many hospital systems that provide help to address these barriers, but they're not communicated at the right time. The individuals who are trying to get to that healthcare don't quite know it. And that's where solutions like Mila come in -- Mila is automating many of these guidance mechanisms to ensure compliance to a care plan." "Today, a health system would send a postcard, or they may have a call center sort of an operation, call these 10,000 patients, or send a scripted text message. Scripted text messages work reasonably well for a reminder system, but they don't really work quite well for communicating with you why an annual wellness visit is important and that you need to come in. So what the platform does is you can give it a goal, such as set up an annual wellness visit or set up or prepare these patients for a colonoscopy. Mila autonomously communicates with the patient either on the phone or by text in a very personalized, engaging, empathetic manner like a human being would, reminding them of their meds, checking on their meds, their symptoms, their diets, and autonomously completing a particular task or getting them ready." #AIPoweredAssistant #CareGap #CarePlan #ChronicConditions #HealthcareTech #MedicationAdherence #NoShowRates #PatientCareGap #PatientCareJourney #PatientOutcome #Readmissions #StaffBurnout #SocialDeterminantsofHealth #SDOH #ValueBasedCare #VBC milahealth.com Download the transcript here

Send us a textOn this encore episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Blair Bigham and Dr. Mojola Omole discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) significantly improves the identification of hospital patients at risk of clinical deterioration compared to physician assessments alone. They are joined by Dr. Amol Verma, a general internist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, an associate professor at the University of Toronto, and the holder of the Temerty Professorship in AI Research and Education, who shares findings from his recent CMAJ article, “Clinical evaluation of a machine learning-based early warning system for patient deterioration”.Dr. Verma explains how the AI system, ChartWatch, analyzes over 100 variables from a patient's electronic medical record to predict deterioration more accurately than traditional early warning scores like the NEWS score. He discusses how the integration of AI into clinical workflows improves patient outcomes by complementing human decision-making, leading to better results than relying on physicians or AI alone. The episode also looks at the potential future of AI in medicine, with Dr. Verma sharing insights on how AI tools should be thoughtfully integrated to support clinicians without overwhelming them. He stresses the need for AI systems to fit seamlessly into clinical workflows, ensuring patient care remains the priority. While AI is currently a tool to assist clinicians, Dr. Verma argues that the full extent of AI's role in healthcare—and its impact on the physician's place within it—remains ultimately unknowable.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. Varsha Vashisht speaks her mind, calmly and clearly. Just the way girls her age and of her social background were not supposed to. When Surendra Verma created her character in 1993, little could he have known that Varsha would continue to speak to women years after her character was born on the pages of “Mujhe Chand Chahiye”. For Varsha takes ‘birth' not as an infant but as a teenaged girl, who decides she doesn't want the humdrum life that everyone around her leads and so must create a life for herself. One that is of her own liking. premchand, storyjam, shortstories, hindi stories, urdu kahani, urdu stories, audio stories, short stories, bedtime stories, hindi sahitya, hindi kahani achchi achhi, urdu kahaniyan, hindi kahani, hindi kahaniyan, kahani, radio kahani, audio kahani, audible, kahani achchi achchi, bed time stories, stories for kids, radio stories, hindi, course ki stories, stories in hindi, mujhe chand chahiye, surendra verma,NSD,National School of Drama,Girl Story,Women Stories

Send us a textOn this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Verma argues that the full extent of AI's role in healthcare—and its impact on the physician's place within it—remains ultimately unknowable. For more information from our sponsor, go to medicuspensionplan.comJoin us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 17th of September and here are the headlines.Delhi minister and senior AAP leader Atishi is set to take over the reins of Delhi from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The announcement was made by the party on Tuesday following deliberations with MLAs and the decision-making body of AAP. Atishi, who currently holds the portfolio of education, finance, law, tourism and several other departments, will be the third woman to hold the post after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. In the first sign of a breakthrough, more than a month after protests began on August 9 over the rape-and-murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, the West Bengal government on Tuesday named Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner. Verma replaces Vineet Kumar Goyal, who has been transferred and posted as ADG and IGP, Special Task Force, West Bengal. The development comes a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced the removal of senior police and health officials, including Kolkata Police Commissioner Goyal. The Supreme Court today turned down the West Bengal government's request to stop live streaming of the court proceedings in the case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. While presiding over a three-judge bench Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud told Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who is representing the Bengal Government and made the request, “We will not stop this”. Sibal told the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, “I have great concern at what's happening. Your Lordships took suo motu cognisance of the matter to find out what is happening on the ground. Now what happens is if you livestream matters like this…which have emotive implications, huge emotive implications. We are not for the accused, we don't stand for the accused, we are only called upon to tell you what the state has done”.The three Maha Vikas Aghadi allies will hold seat-sharing talks from September 18 to 20 for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, according to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut. Talking to reporters he said deliberations will be held on the seats to be contested, and the formula once decided during this meeting will be final. This comes after ruling Mahayti alliance declared yesterday that they shall contest elections on almost 80 percent of the total 288 assembly seats in the state. Meanwhile, the procession of the famous Lalbaugcha Raja idol, which attracts maximum number of devotees, celebrities and prominent personalities during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival is near to immersion or Visarjan on the final day of Ganesh festivities today. In global news today, Israel announced that halting Hezbollah's attacks in northern Israel has become a formal war objective. This new focus aims to facilitate the safe return of displaced residents and is part of a broader consideration of a more extensive military operation that could escalate into a full-scale regional conflict. The decision follows a series of high-level meetings within Israel's security Cabinet, which convened late into the night to reassess the nation's strategic goals. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.
