Crop Shoot: Farmers Caught Up In Policy Turmoil

Agriculture is directly responsible for 10 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and farmers and ranchers face growing climate impacts every day, from more severe storms to intense droughts, making it harder to grow food.  The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates emissions from the agriculture sector will modestly increase over the next 30 years. Yet the Trump administration is slashing programs that help reduce emissions, feed people, protect farmworkers and animals and sensitive lands. In addition, the Trump administration's tariffs and trade wars have affected the cost of machinery and sales of major crops. What will these changes mean for our national food system? How are farmers weathering these impacts? And where are people building resilience regardless of federal policy?  Episode Guests: Lisa Held, Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor, Civil Eats Megan O'Rourke, Congressional Candidate NJ07; Former USDA Scientist John Bartman, Illinois farmer Byron Kominek, Owner and Manager, Jack's Solar Garden Highlights: 00:00 – Intro 05:30 – Lisa Held on major climate and agriculture stories in 2025 07:30 – Climate change is making it harder to be a farmer 09:15 – Changes at USDA 15:00 – How SNAP cuts affect consumers and farmers/growers 18:30 – Trump admin penalizing efforts/grants that support DEI efforts in agriculture 24:00 – John Bartman shares his journey to regenerative agriculture 30:00 – Partnership for Climate Smart Commodities Program and cutbacks under Trump 34:30 – Trade war between China and US is hurting soybean sales and Amazon rainforest 37:10 – Byron Kominek on how he got into agrivoltaics and the benefits it offers 42:00 – Agrivoltaics is climate adaptation 51:20 – Megan O'Rourke on research around kernza, a perennial grain 54:00 – Most pressing challenges for agriculture right now 59:00 – Importance of food security at home and abroad, and role of US farmers 1:03:30 – Climate One More Thing For show notes , transcript, and related links, visit climateone.org/podcasts ****** Support Climate One by going ad-free! By mid-January, many people are still taking action toward change but feel increasingly unsure of themselves. In this Think Thursday episode, Molly introduces the concept of identity lag to explain why behavior often changes before belief does and why that gap can feel uncomfortable.Building on recent conversations about the Fresh Start Effect and the neuroscience of follow-through, this episode explores what happens in the brain when new behaviors challenge long-held self-stories. Molly explains how identity is shaped through evidence over time, why self-doubt often peaks after consistency begins, and how cognitive dissonance plays a central role in this phase of change.Rather than seeing discomfort as a sign that something is wrong, listeners are invited to understand identity lag as a normal and necessary transition in sustainable behavior change. What You'll LearnWhy behavior change often feels awkward before it feels alignedWhat identity lag is and why it shows up in mid-JanuaryHow the brain prioritizes stability and safetyWhy confidence does not come first in lasting changeHow cognitive dissonance creates tension during growthWhy self-doubt often increases after consistency beginsHow identity actually updates through repetition and evidenceKey Concepts ExplainedIdentity lag as the gap between behavior and beliefDefault mode network and self-referential processingCognitive dissonance and the brain's drive for consistencyEvidence accumulation in identity-based behavior changeNeuroplasticity and learning across time and contextImpostor syndrome as a byproduct of uncertainty during growthCore Takeaways from the EpisodeBehavior leads and identity followsFeeling unfamiliar does not mean being misalignedSelf-doubt is information, not instructionConfidence grows from repetition, not declarationsConsistent behavior resolves cognitive dissonance over timeOver time, research shows that behavior is often what resolves cognitive dissonance, not beliefs. When behavior stays consistent, identity eventually follows. That's why you don't have to convince yourself. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are accused of forcefully dragging a Native American man from car and detaining him during the increasing tensions in Minneapolis, Minn. More than 2,000 ICE agents and other federal officers descended on the city in what the Trump administration insists is an immigration enforcement action. At least five Native Americans have been detained, several others have had confrontations with ICE agents. The crackdown is roundly condemned by local and state community leaders. We'll talk to some of those caught up in the action and what more might be in store elsewhere. We’ll also hear from the leader of Virginia’s Rappahannock Tribe about their opposition to a plan by county officials to use 9,000,000 gallons of water from the tribe’s namesake river for a proposed data center, a plan that tribal leaders say was drafted without proper consultation. If you're an ambitious rider trying to juggle horses, work, family, goals, money, fitness, and your sanity… this episode is going to feel like a deep exhale. Today, I and Lorna dive into one of the biggest struggles riders face: How do you manage everything without feeling overwhelmed, guilty, or constantly behind? And the honest answer? You don't “balance” it. Because balance is a myth, an illusion we keep chasing, then beating ourselves up for not catching. Inside this episode, we explore: Why riders don't actually have a time problem, they have a thinking problem How overwhelm isn't failure… it's the abundance of everything you once wished for The link between your to-do list and your limiting beliefs Why your mind becomes a “washing machine” of pressure, and how to stop feeding it The REAL reason you procrastinate (hint: it's not laziness) How to recognize when your subconscious is trying to protect you Why some days you glide through 80 tasks and others you can't handle five The secret difference between an “incapable rider” and an “incapable state” This episode gives you the awareness, the metaphors, and the mental models to finally understand: why you feel overwhelmed why your brain spirals why you keep recreating the same stress patterns and how to start shifting out of them with compassion instead of criticism Whether you're riding six horses a day or squeezing in one evening ride after work, this conversation will help you stop fighting your mind and start working with it. Feast of Tabernacles Thursday, 10-9-25: 1 Thess 4:17:  "Caught Up!"  Todays Bible study was revelation from the Holy Spirit to me on the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles.  Come and see what all has been pulled together for this episode! If you are blessed by today's Bible study, please support my channel by liking, subscribing, commenting, and sharing with your friends and family!  I am not a Pastor, and agree with God's word that women are not supposed to be Pastors.  However, all people are called to share the gospel. It is perfectly acceptable and Biblical for women to lead Bibles studies outside the church as an ancillary addition to the church, and especially if it is a viable avenue for study of the Word on a daily basis, like I'm doing on this show, and paving the way for all of us to be closer to the Lord and become more knowledgeable of the Bible.  If you care to contribute to my work with the Daily Bible study and sharing the Gospel, as part of your tithes and offerings, you can do so through PayPal by sending it to my PayPal address of: ReneHoladay@gmail.com You are also welcome to email me at the same email address above if you have any thoughts you'd like to share about this episode!    Thank you for watching and God Bless you all! ;()

In this episode, I talk about why “being early” is a form of preparation, not punishment, the unseen process behind divine alignment and timing, how to find peace when your vision feels ahead of its time, the importance of trusting what's being built in you before it's seen by others and more. Despite the inaction of the Democratic Party leadership, the consensus among the base of the Democratic Party is for the U.S. government to end its support of Israel's efforts to commit genocide in Palestine. Listen as Aaron and Damien discuss the piece “Democratic Leadership Still Hasn't Caught Up to the Party's Base on Gaza” by Stephen Zunes in In These Times, which explores and analyzes the growing calls for the end of U.S. support for Israel among Democratic voters in the face of the inaction and ineffectiveness of the Democratic Party leadership to force changes in the government's position, and what we learn and take away from this piece in our continued learning and unlearning work and fight for collective liberation. The rapture came and went, and Reeta and Chels are left behind paying bills and figuring out what is for dinner! And on this episode of the Gridiron Gals podcast, the Falcons forgot how to score), Russell Wilson finally hit the bench for Jaxon Dart (Chels may have actually nailed this one), and the injury bug feasted like it was Thanksgiving..yikes. Reeta and Chels discuss which team broke their fans' hearts the hardest, which one shocked the world, and then veer straight into coaching drama—Mike Gundy's mullet era ends at Oklahoma State, Dabo might be next, and Florida's soap opera could eat either Napier or Lagway first. Oh, and the weekend slate is loaded: Georgia-Bama, LSU-Ole Miss, Oregon-Penn State. The volcano is being fed once again so tune in to find out who goes in
