A variety of vehicles have been at the centre of some of the most dramatic developments in the police and political capture saga that is playing out at the Madlanga Commission and at the Ad Hoc Committee in Parliament. Chris Steyn talks to Juanita du Preez of Action Society about the bullet-ridden clapped-out car used in the allegedly staged assassination attempt on former African National Congress (ANC) election fixer Brian Mogotsi. They also discuss Crime Intelligence (CI) Chief General Dumisani Khumalo's return to the Madlanga Commission with more jaw-dropping evidence, including footage of a Toyota Hilux driven by suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya during the raid on his home, a vehicle that turns out to belong to a man who has had 34 criminal cases against him, and who accompanied the General to Parliament when he went to testify before the Ad Hoc Committee. Footage has also been shown of another vehicle, allocated to General Sibiya's office, and used by a Sergeant to go and pick up a bag with mysterious contents from the home of alleged murder mastermind, KT Molefe.

The Madlanga Commission has heard more damning testimony linking suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, General Shadrack Sibiya to alleged corruption. SAPS Divisional Commissioner for Crime Intelligence, Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo told the commission that an investigation linked Sibiya to criminal syndicates through a detective in his office. The commission has also heard that the detective, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, allegedly acted as an intermediary in a kickback scheme involving a R360 million SAPS tender. Outrage is growing in Kannaland over the continued leadership of Mayor Jeffrey Donson, a convicted sex offender. Action Society, a civil rights group, has slammed the municipality for allowing Donson to remain in office two years after his expulsion from Icosa, the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa. Donson was convicted in 2008 for statutory rape and indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl, crimes committed in 2004 during his earlier term as mayor. He received a suspended sentence, a fine, and mandatory rehabilitation after an appeal. Despite this, Kannaland voters reinstated him in the 2021 local elections through an Icosa-ANC coalition. That partnership collapsed amid public anger, leading to a no-confidence vote in April 2024 that briefly removed Donson. He quickly returned to power, prompting renewed criticism from the Commission for Gender Equality, which called his re-election a blow to the fight against gender-based violence. Judgment is expected today in the Section 174 application brought by eight South African Police Service VIP Protection Unit officers, charged in connection with a 2023 assault on civilians along Johannesburg's N1 highway. The officers, part of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's security detail, face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, pointing firearms and malicious damage to property. The case stems from a widely shared video showing the officers stopping a VW Polo, smashing its windows and attacking the driver and passengers with rifle butts and fists.
