Guilt has an incredible way of popping up even when we're barely doing anything "wrong" at all. Most of us learn guilt throughout normal childhood development. Guilt alerts us when we've stepped outside of the boundaries of our core values. It makes us take responsibility when we've done something wrong and helps us to develop a greater sense of self-awareness. The feeling of guilt forces us to examine how our behaviour affects others and make changes so that we don't make the same mistake again. However, there is a MASSIVE difference between “healthy” and “unhealthy” guilt. How can we learn to deal with guilt — accepting it when it is appropriate and letting it go when it's unnecessary? Shame is among the most “use-less” of human emotions, with the power to convince us that that little voice in our head is right after all—you know, the one that says “You're not good enough,” or “You'll never really belong,” or “Who would actually love you?” It's not only an excruciatingly painful feeling, but also a universal one. Rich or poor, overweight or fit, successful or barely making eds meet, we all experience shame from time to time, whether we admit it or not (and we usually don't). Shame can force us to alienate ourselves and seek refuge in unhealthy manners such as or addiction, violence, aggression, depression, eating disorders and bullying. Hence why it's crucial that we learn ways to deal with it and to build healthy barriers against it. Life isn't perfect. Things go wrong, mistakes are made, accidents and unforeseen circumstances happen, and at times our hopes get shattered. Through all of life's experiences and the challenges we each face; is your default reaction to find somebody or something else to blame? A lot of things that happen to us are the result of multiple contributing factors, and can be caused by a mix of our own actions as well as those of other people. Life is not a spectator sport and our interaction in it is what causes the experiences we have. If you find yourself trying to pass the buck for every mistake you make, then it's probably gotten you into trouble in the past… …especially if you try to shift the blame onto your partner, family, best friends, or people you have to work closely with. Life is all about making mistakes. Because it's when we go through and moving past the mistakes that we learn how to do things right, isn't it? If we never accept that we've made a mistake, how can we ever learn to do things better? With that in mind, let's have a think about some of the reasons why we can be tempted to blame others, followed by a look at how to kick the habit of shifting the blame for our problems. With all the mass hypnosis in the world today and the constant onslaught of who's “right” and who's “wrong”, what we “should” and what we “shouldn't”, what is “acceptable” and what is “not acceptable” ... Who has stopped for a moment and wondered: “Who was I before society told me who I should be?” “Who do I WANT to be, without the division of race, ethnicity, religion or vaccination status?” “What are my values, and where did I learn them?” Let's look at these and other ideas in this episode of The Mindwalker Method™ podcast. With so much focus on goal setting, achievement of those goals, desired outcomes and always pushing forward towards bigger and better things... Society has taught us that there is no such thing as “enough” and that we are to constantly seek more and more... But have you even stopped to think that if you are in the eye of the storm, the centre of the chaos… that you are already halfway through it? The “New Normal” as so many are calling it, with near post-apocalyptic emotions attached and the promise of a new world with a new way of doing things. It almost elicits the same emotions as an abusive husband who promises his estranged spouse that “this time things will be different” and “I have changed, I promise”. Yet when we look back at history and the catastrophes that have befallen humankind, with the majority of these calamities being of our own making, have we truly entered a “New Normal” or is it merely the shock of yet another close-call that has jarred us from our behavioural and unconscious reverie? So, before we delve into empty promises of “we solemnly swear”, let's look at a few behavioural facts that has brought us to our current global dilemma and what needs to change in order to minimalise any similar future scenarios that threaten to mimic our current assimilated experience. The question we should all be asking is: "Is the 'new normal' a place of creation or is it a place of incarceration?" The choice remains in all of our hands. Either we choose to take action and stand together, with an attitude of unity and camaraderie, or we risk being driven to extinction by the greed and ego of a human race who are blind to our own power and who chooses an attitude of negligence. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mindwalker/message
Technically, family is a matter of DNA... But nobody who says “I want a family,” means “I want a group of genetically similar people.” They want an unbreakable bond of unconditional love and warmth. A soft place to go to when everything seems difficult. And sometimes, getting those things means looking outside our genetic circles. We don't have to swear allegiance based solely on the blood running through our veins. Sure, blood may be thicker than water, but water is equally necessary to sustain life. For whatever the reason that we can't be with our blood-bound families of origin, there's so much to be said for choosing someone to stand in their place. Emphasis on “choosing”, because unlike actual family, we get to pick them:people who share similar views, people who understand, people who accept, people who forgive, people who love. This “chosen family” is truly a gift from above and there's a level of comfort and familiarity that you just don't achieve with regular “acquaintances”. These are the friendships and relationships that are next-level, and on a personal level... I'm here for them, because they're here for me: the family I chose in the absence of my own. Family is the best and most important gift in our lives, and it is important to embrace and appreciate it every day. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mindwalker/message
Our brains are truly amazing, aren't they? Have you ever watched one of those TV shows or Documentaries about someone who experienced an amazing, unexpected recovery after a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other brain damage? Some of those stories seem like the only explanation is pure magic or miraculous, instead of science. Although it does seem inexplicable, scientists have been hard at work studying these cases over the last several decades, and have found the explanation behind the magic: Neuroplasticity Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to adapt. Our brains are truly extraordinary; unlike computers, which are built to certain specifications and receive software updates periodically, our brains can actually receive hardware updates in addition to software updates. Different pathways form and fall dormant, are created and are discarded, according to our experiences. And with "experiences" I mean the demands we put on our brains. When we learn something new, we create new connections between our neurons. We literally rewire our brains to adapt to new circumstances. And even though this happens automatically and unconsciously on a daily basis, it's also something that we can encourage and stimulate by conscious choice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mindwalker/message
Is ambition enough? What's the difference between drive, ambition and motivation; and why does it matter? What is it that “drives” us to do anything? Why do you work? Why do you eat your favourite food? Why do you start a business? Why do you buy a lottery ticket? Why are you in your current relationship? The answers to these questions may seem self-evident, but in fact, they are actually quite complex, because they come from within the same complex organism, the same body, the same mind that has both the capabilities to create amazing things as well to destroy the very planet we all inhabit. I had a mentor once who said that being “driven” is not a choice and therefore, genetically speaking it's undesirable. He said that instead, we can choose to be “ambitious”. Ambition works as a paradigm, a framework, a mindset in this world of striving. It's a combination of: Desire Thought Action (Behaviour) It also takes an incredible amount of willpower, and the self-discipline of a celibate monk in the Playboy Mansion. That doesn't mean it's not possible, but there is a reason the top 10% of society makes over a million or more annually, and the rest simply do not. How do we use our thoughts and what we say to cast a spell on ourselves and those people and things around us…? Is there a science to it or is it a supernatural occurrence? There is no ambiguity in our minds about our daily dealings in thoughts. It's intuitive and we don't need to explain it to anyone, or even to ourselves. Anger is a normal, healthy emotion. But it's unhealthy when it flares up all the time or spirals out of control. Chronic, explosive anger has serious consequences for your relationships, your health, and your state of mind. The good news is that getting anger under control is easier than you think. With insight about the real reasons for your anger and these anger management tools, you can learn to keep your temper from hijacking your life. The emotion of anger is neither good nor bad. Like any emotion, it's conveying a message, telling you that a situation is upsetting, or unjust, or threatening. If your kneejerk reaction to anger is to explode, however, that message never has a chance to be conveyed. So, while it's perfectly normal to feel angry when you've been mistreated or wronged, anger becomes problematic when you express it in a way that harms yourself or others. If you have a hot temper, you may feel like it's out of your hands and there's little you can do to tame the beast. You have more control over your anger than you think. You can learn to express your emotions without hurting others. For many of us, we get stuck in the past because of our need for certainty. Certainty is fundamentally about survival (looking at Maslow's hierarchy of needs). We all need to feel certain that we can avoid pain, and, ideally, find some form of comfort/pleasure. Continuous pain means continuous damage, and that eventually leads to our demise. For almost all of us, it's frightening to step into the unknown. It's difficult to be vulnerable, and it can be overwhelmingly uncomfortable to have that sense of uncertainty about what lies ahead. So, what do we do…? We hang on to the past – because even if it's steeped in pain, discomfort and feelings of hurt, it's what we are familiar with and what we have certainty about. But what is this all costing us? How is it impacting our relationships, our lives and our happiness? And how do we learn to loosen our grip so we can move forward in a healthier, happier way? Unhealthy mental health habits are behaviours that have a negative effect on the way we think and the way we feel about ourselves. We often believe our mood and our mental health are solely dependent on external factors and that we have little ability to control them. We often wonder why we get so easily irritated, upset, sad, lethargic, and bored in life. Then, as a solution, we try to improve our mood and cope with stress by engaging in unhealthy behaviours. And this, unfortunately, makes our mood even worse. Yes, it's true that our mood is affected by our brain chemistry. But, remember one thing... Our brain chemistry is largely affected by our behaviours and habits in life. If we treat ourselves with care and know what makes us happy, we are going to have a more balanced brain chemistry. Here are a few common bad mental health habits that might be making you unhappy and unsatisfied with your life. https://tonywake.com https://mindwalker.co.za --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mindwalker/message
What are false beliefs? They are beliefs we have about ourselves or our experience (internal as well as external) that are untrue and limiting. They live in our unconscious and since 90 percent of our actions stem from our unconscious, our false beliefs play a huge role in nearly everything we do. Also, since they live in our unconscious, we may not be aware of them and how they affect our daily lives. For example, if you believe you are unlovable, you may sabotage relationships, hold on when you shouldn't, or avoid getting into relationships altogether. And then “logic” may provide you with explanations on why you are doing this when, at the core, it's fuelled by your false belief that you are unlovable. Our behaviour stems from our beliefs. And what our life looks like is a result of our collective behaviour. So, if we change or dissolve our beliefs, especially our false beliefs, we can change our behaviour and ultimately change our life. A belief is based on a perception, or one's interpretation of the acquired knowledge. So let's investigate how to change limiting beliefs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mindwalker/message
Sometimes in life, we find ourselves at a dead end, a crossroads, a path that seems to go nowhere and often we find ourselves uttering these 9 oh-so-familiar words: “I don't know what to do with my life…” No matter what stage you are at in your life, if you are unhappy or unsure as to how to proceed, then there's one major thing you need to do right now… And that is re-evaluate. And if you're uncertain about WHAT exactly to do, then just go and DO RANDOM stuff that you think might be interesting and if you didn't like the class or workshop or course or whatever, then cross that off your list. Lot of fear going around, uncertainty about what is to come, what actions to take, what NOT to do and where we will all ultimately move towards as a species. Anger, regret, blame, jealousy and the like… are all different spin-offs from fear.
