Jeannette talks to the powerhouse that is Amber Hollingsworth, who shares her insights on addiction, drawing from her extensive experience as a counselor and founder of "Put The Shovel Down" and "Hope Stream Community." The conversation delves into the complexities of addiction, including the distinction between functional addicts and those in denial, and the impact of addiction on families and workplaces. Amber discusses her unique approach to helping families communicate effectively with loved ones struggling with addiction, emphasising the importance of understanding and connection over confrontation You'll Learn Why: Addiction can manifest in various forms, including substance use disorders, and affects not just the individual but their entire support network. Family members often play a crucial role in addressing addiction. Instead of confronting the individual directly about their problem, it's more effective to approach the situation collaboratively The belief that individuals must hit rock bottom before seeking help is misleading. Many people continue their addictive behaviours despite severe consequences Having a clear sense of purpose is vital for both individuals struggling with addiction and those helping them This episode is living proof that no matter where you're starting from — or what life throws at you — it's never too late to be brave, bold, and unlock your inner brilliant. This week on the Oakley Podcast, host Jeremy Kellett chats with Oakley owner/operator John Burgess about his remarkable journey through trucking, health crises, and entrepreneurship. John talks about getting into trucking at 18, the ups and downs of being an owner-operator (including expensive breakdowns and a tornado-damaged home), and how a series of life-threatening health scares including blood clots, uncontrolled diabetes, and severe illness, forced him to completely reevaluate his lifestyle. John explains how switching to a carnivore/proper human diet, closely monitoring his blood work, and finding better medical guidance helped him lose about 100 pounds, reverse serious issues, and feel healthier at 62 than in his 40s. He also describes building Lizzy B's Barbecue Rubs & Seasonings, a low- or no-sugar, keto/diabetic-friendly seasoning line inspired by his love of barbecue. Key takeaways: trucking can be financially and emotionally brutal without savings and support; health cannot be outsourced to doctors alone; diet and disciplined self-care can radically change outcomes; and even after near-death moments, it's possible to rebuild your body, business, and marriage. Key topics in today's conversation include: Welcoming John to Today's Episode (0:47) John's Background, Family, and Early Trucking Career (1:36) Hitting Rock Bottom and Finding Oakley Trucking (9:58) Becoming an Owner Operator and the Harsh Financial Realities (13:22) Major Breakdowns, Tornado Damage, and Insurance Struggles (13:39) Life-Threatening Health Scares and Near-Death Blood Clot Story (18:33) Discovering Carnivore Diet, Losing 100 Pounds, and Reversing Diabetes (30:49) Creating Lizzy B's Seasonings and Building a Side Business (34:25) John's Mission to Help Truckers Get Healthy and Improve Their Lives (50:48) Closing Thoughts On Trucking, Health, and John's Contact Info (55:57) Oakley Trucking is a family-owned and operated trucking company headquartered in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Ernie Leon shares a story of survival, violence, and redemption. Growing up in Arizona, Ernie fell into addiction and gang life at a young age, which led to an armed robbery conviction and time in the Arizona prison system. After getting into trouble behind the walls, he was sent to maximum-security prison, where survival became a daily battle. Enjoy Nate's interview on Martens Minute! GML will return this week. Nate Thurston, co-host of the Good Morning Liberty podcast and former guitarist for the band Darling Parade, joins me to share his powerful journey through alcoholism and recovery. He opens up about his struggles with alcohol and addiction as a touring musician, and how his alcoholism spiraled out of control as his music career came to an end, nearly costing him his life. With the support of his wife, Nate confronted his addiction, quit drinking, and rebuilt his life. Now seven years sober, he enjoys a happy marriage, hosts a successful podcast, and is a respected figure in the liberty community. Your hiring process is broken. You are hiring for skills when you should be hiring for the one thing you can't train: behavior. In this episode, Reanna Werner (Founder of Savion HQ) reveals the brutal reality of entrepreneurship—from being "ruined" for the corporate world to managing the two things that keep every founder awake at night: their people and their money. If you've ever felt held hostage by a toxic employee or paralyzed by the fear of a lawsuit, this conversation is the wake-up call you need.

He opens up about the moments that broke him, the lies he told himself, the pain he caused, and the internal flames he spent years trying to numb. This episode goes far beyond addiction. It's about the truth men avoid, the chaos we create, and the courage it takes to face ourselves. In this raw, unfiltered conversation, Matty opens up about:• Growing up in chaos, abandonment, and abuse• Finding identity in punk rock, rebellion, and danger• Becoming a firefighter and “living the dream” on the outside• How trauma, infidelity, and addiction slowly tore his life apart• PTSD, nightmares, hypervigilance, and trying to “fake it” on the job• Losing his marriage, his kids, and nearly his life• The DUI, assault, and suicidal moment that became a breaking point• The cops who talked him down — and the woman who saw something in him when he didn'tThis is more than a firefighter story — it's about addiction, PTS/PTSD, fatherhood, broken identity, and the brutal cost of unresolved pain.If you're a first responder, veteran, spouse, or anyone who feels like they've gone too far to come back, this episode is for you.Part 2 drops Sunday, November 23rd — and that's where the story erupts into the turning point that changed everything.00:00 Introduction and Personal Struggles01:33 Podcast Introduction and Guest Welcome03:55 Guest's Professional Background09:13 Personal Life and Family Dynamics16:19 Early Life and Rebellious Youth33:10 Reflecting on Childhood and Early Life Lessons35:32 Struggles with Betrayal and Anger37:51 Navigating Family and Career Challenges42:53 The Journey to Becoming a Firefighter55:01 Facing Personal and Professional Adversities01:05:11 Hitting Rock Bottom and Seeking Redemption01:07:31 A Glimmer of Hope and Support01:12:14 The Road to Recovery and Reconciliation#RelentlessPursuitPodcast #MattyFiorenza #FirefighterStories #TraumaHealing #OvercomingAddiction #RecoveryJourney #MentalHealthAwareness #FirstResponders #SurvivorStory #UnfilteredConversations

On our perpetual quest for bigger, better, faster, wealthier, and stronger, we're led to believe that more is the answer – more gadgets, advanced technology, connections, resources, money, entertainment, etc. But what if there was a case to be made the answer to fulfillment is not in more but in less? My guest today, Dewyane Noel, makes that case. We talk about why less is more, how to reduce noise, chaos, and distraction in the modern world, the value of a hard day's work, what we can learn about human behavior through good horsemanship, and why good men ride good horses. It is November 1462 and the emperor Friedrich III and his young family are huddling together in the cellars of the Hofburg. The citizens of Vienna are shooting cannonballs into the 13th century castle, the walls are crumbling and any moment now the angry crowds may break in. Outside, supporting the insurrection stood his own brother, calling on him to give up. Two crowns he has already lost and a third is about to be knocked off his head as the imperial princes had ganged up on him. Friedrich III was a man who firmly believed in ancient laws and traditions and was profoundly ill suited for a world where, as Picciolomini wrote in the last sentence of his history of the emperor Friedrich III quote: “We are of the opinion that empires are won by weapons, not by legal means!” Friedrich III and with him the Habsburgs hit rock bottom, but how and why exactly he ended up there, and w hat that tells us about the profound changes during this period of history is what we are going to explore in this episode. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Hey, Heal Squad! We're back with Part 2 of our conversation with Mayci Neeley, star of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives! Mayci opens up about navigating the emotional rollercoaster of IVF, motherhood, and healing after trauma, and what it really takes to find balance through it all. She shares how she's learned to protect her peace, release control, and lean into faith when life doesn't go as planned (all while filming a reality TV show)! They talk about setting boundaries, staying grounded in chaos, and the daily practices that help her return to joy. PLUS, they dive into the importance of slowing down, listening to your body, and creating boundaries that protect your mental and spiritual health (even when life feels overwhelming). You're never too far from peace, and balance is something you can build, even in the hardest seasons! HEALERS & HEAL-LINERS: Healing is about doing hard things anyway. Mayci shares how her IVF journey taught her that strength isn't about having it all together, it's about walking through discomfort, uncertainty, and fear, and realizing you can survive more than you thought you could. Joy can be a form of medicine. Even after loss and trauma, Mayci chooses laughter, connection, and lightness. She reminds us that healing doesn't mean ignoring pain, it means letting joy have a seat at the table too. Friendship is a safe haven for healing. Through her bond with Michaela, Mayci shows how honest, supportive relationships can help us process pain without getting lost in it, and that sometimes healing starts simply by being seen. Matt & Bob are powered by Chuy, as per usual on this fine Thursday morning. BOB gets into hot water with his wife by standing on the business of not paying an unfair fee levied against the community, Gene Simmons gets up to "concussion people", monkey madness behind the wheel, and the intern formerly known as Georgia comes clean about her legal troubles, starting the new trend of hitting rock (and roll) bottom and calling it "Pulling a Georgia". Maybe that is what Gene Simmons was trying to do. Anywho, she probably needs a new name. Send appropriate and polite suggestions, please. She is still a Lady. Sawyer Stull pops by with his perky pup. 110. How to Rethink Drinking Without "Hitting Rock Bottom"What if your relationship with alcohol doesn't require a dramatic rock-bottom moment to change? In this episode of SetSet, I sit down with sobriety coach Martha Wright, who went from building a life around wine—professionally and personally—to questioning its role in her daily rituals. Just as I did with cannabis. Together, Martha and I explore what it means to be a “gray area drinker,” how midlife hormonal shifts impact our cravings and consumption, and how reframing our beliefs about alcohol can free us from it—without shame or labels. This conversation is rich in neuroscience, compassion, and personal insight, offering a fresh and empowering approach to alcohol use.

There may have been a time or two in our lives we felt like we hit rock bottom. What do we do when we hit rock bottom? There is always hope because as Jesus prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail him, Jesus has prayed for us. Peter may have faltered, but his faith did not fail him. There is a sifting we all will go through but we must seek the Lord during that sifting.

He shares the progression of his addiction—weed and pills leading to heroin, crack, and near-fatal lows including homelessness, suicidal thoughts, and severe health complications. A turning point came when he entered detox and long-term treatment programs, where structure and community support helped him rebuild his life. Matt also talks about relapse, rebuilding quickly, and how building a strong network of sober friends became crucial to his recovery. His story highlights both the tragedy of losing friends to overdose and the joy of discovering a fulfilling sober life—travel, motorcycles, relationships, and most importantly, fatherhood. Becoming a dad gave Matt a new sense of purpose, grounding his recovery in love and responsibility. 00:00 – Introductions00:36 – First Treatment at 1305:00 – Escalating Addiction07:00 – First Arrests & Juvenile Justice08:00 – Hitting Rock Bottom at 1810:00 – Sober House & Overdose Scare13:00 – Relapse After Heartbreak15:00 – Waterbury & Heavy Addiction17:30 – Final Turning Point19:00 – Structured Recovery & Torrington Move22:00 – Slip & Quick Return to Recovery23:00 – Building a New Life25:00 – Meeting His Fiancée & Becoming a Father29:00 – Parenthood in Recovery34:00 – Advice for Newcomers ----Across the Web----
In this powerful and thought-provoking conversation, meditation teacher and author Billy Winn shares his journey from heavy drinking to finding peace and fulfillment through Zen Buddhist practice. Billy talks about the pivotal moment that led him to stop drinking, the lessons he learned from opening (and later closing) an alcohol-free bar, and the transformative power of meditation in rewiring the brain. He opens up about childhood adversity, workaholism, burnout, and how he ultimately found freedom by realizing he was already enough—without needing to do more or be more. We also discuss his new book The Empty Path: Finding Fulfillment Through the Radical Art of Lessening and his work shaping psychedelic-assisted therapy policy in Colorado. This is a must-listen for anyone curious about sobriety, mindfulness, or how to find peace in a busy world. Before we jump in, I wanted to let you know I am about to publish the second episode of “Sobriety Reset” which will be focused on what I think are the 3 phases of recovery, and this is after 31 years of personal research and experience. I'm going to cover everything from how to rebuild self-esteem and why that's important, how to identify the root causes that may compel you to drink, and of course, emotion management to make sobriety stick. Please be sure to subscribe to the YouTube Channel. There will be a link in the show notes at odaatchat.com, and if you enjoy this episode, it would mean the world to me if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. It might surprise you to know that according to the analytics, less than 1% of our audience will actually leave a review. By leaving a review, it helps others who are suffering to find the podcast and get the life saving resources they need to get and stay sober. You can even think of leaving a review as an act of service! So thank you so much for your support! And without further delay, please enjoy this episode, and let me know what you think! Joseph Schultze's life looked nothing like the path that would eventually lead him toward prison. Growing up in Binghamton, New York, he had a loving home — but also parents battling cocaine addiction. Forced to take care of them while still a teenager, Joseph dropped out of high school and developed crippling anxiety. A car accident became the turning point that pulled him into painkillers, harder drugs, and a spiral of crime that racked up multiple larceny charges. Facing years behind bars, Joseph took a chance on New York's infamous shock program — a grueling alternative to prison designed to break inmates down physically and mentally. #AddictionRecovery #PrisonStories #ShockProgram #OvercomingAddiction #TrueCrimePodcast #AddictionAwareness #LifeAfterPrison #RecoveryJourney Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Get 50% off the Magic Mind offer here: https://www.magicmind.com/IANB50. #magicmind #mentalwealth #mentalperformance Presented by Tyson 2.0 & Wooooo Energy: https://tyson20.com/ https://woooooenergy.com/ Use code LOCKEDIN for 20% OFF Wooooo Energy Buy Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction & Early Addiction 00:50 Meet Joe: Hometown and Upbringing 02:00 Parents' Punk Rock Past & Family Struggles 04:04 Childhood Stories 07:00 Parents' Arrest 09:45 Family History & Normalcy Amidst Chaos 12:26 Dreams for the Future & Sports 13:51 Struggles in School and Dropping Out 14:44 Hitting Rock Bottom in High School 17:17 The GED, New School, and Finding Purpose 18:35 Early Jobs & Anxiety Takes Over 19:37 Battling Severe Anxiety and Isolation 21:18 Emerging from Anxiety 22:26 Family Crises and New Responsibilities 23:54 Balancing Business, Love, and Parental Care 27:32 Becoming a Parent: Breaking the Cycle? 32:30 The Accident That Changed Everything 36:56 Raising a Daughter 40:40 Understanding His Parents 42:58 Losing Prescription Access 45:39 Descent Into Heroin and Selling Possessions 47:59 From Using to Dealing & Living the Fast Life 52:40 Boosting: Shoplifting to Survive 57:07 Life of Boosting: Escalation and Arrests 01:04:04 Legal Trouble: Juggling Charges and Addiction 01:11:49 The Downward Spiral: High-Speed Chases & More Crime 01:18:19 Identity Theft & First Long Jail Stint 01:26:32 Jail, Withdrawal, and Hitting Bottom 01:36:08 Back to the Streets: Meth, Cars & Escalation 01:42:17 Caught Again: The End of Bonnie & Clyde 01:44:55 State Time: Programs & Military Boot Camp 01:56:41 Shock Program: Getting Broken Down to Build Up 02:08:08 Completing Shock & The Path to Recovery 02:13:13 Staying Sober, Rebuilding Life & Family 02:20:00 Lessons Learned & Final Thoughts 02:25:52 Outro & Gratitude Powered by: Just Media House : https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Creative direction, design, assets, support by FWRD: https://www.fwrd.co Learn more about your ad choices. A rock bottom moment isn't required to get sober, although it obviously helps. We have no control over what will be our rock bottom, and often we stack consequences for a long time before enough is finally enough. In this episode I discuss what to do if you haven't had a rock bottom yet. You'll learn about 3 key things I've noticed that dabblers do that prevent them from getting sober for good, and what I would suggest doing if you haven't hit your enough point yet.
