Matt & Carol: What ALS Can't Take

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2025 25:07

Matt underwent a profound change when he went from effortlessly walking and running to finding his body seemingly forgetting how. Through a series of medical tests, he eventually received the devastating diagnosis of ALS. The decline of his health has required immense changes for both Matt and his wife, Carol, impacting their lifestyle in profound ways. Yet, it is through this very suffering that their faith has grown stronger, and they share the unwavering hope they find in Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.Know someone who would be encouraged by Matt and Carol's testimony? You should share it! We weren't created to go through life without the wisdom and insight of older and wiser counsel. Becca shares about her relationship with her mentor and how that relationship has blessed and influenced the way she makes decisions. She offers advice to the person being mentored on how to gain the most from their mentor's wisdom as well as what not to do. Resources: Outdated (book) Equipped To Love (book) Verses: Titus 2:1-8 (ESV) But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. 2 Corinthians 8:13-15 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”2 Corinthians 8:13 commentaryDo you or how you been mentored by anyone? Knowing God's will for our lives is something all Christians desire to know, yet discerning the will of God isn't as easy as receiving an email or a phone call from Him. Whether it's which job to take, which college to attend, which church to commit yourself to, or whom to marry, determining the will of God is important to Christians. We all have questions for God, but we know that the Bible doesn't always give black and white answers (for example, there is no scripture that says “You shall attend this college“ or “Don't marry that person“). In this episode, Maxx shares her experience discerning God's will for her life as big life choices came up and how her time in prayer and reading God's Word brought her clarity. Though Maxx, in no way, claims to have all the answers or the magic formula for discerning God's will, she has wise insights on how you might go about uncovering the will of God for your life. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2, ESV).If this podcast episode has encouraged you and you know someone who would be equally encouraged, consider sharing it!
