"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."This Ends at Prom is six years old, and The Wives Colangelo are celebrating with the last John Hughes teen movie they've yet to cover, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF. A teen movie so beloved it's in the Library of Congress, let's dissect why this movie has the staying power that it does, whether or not Ferris is "actually a villain," and what it means to escape the confines of Suburbia for the perfect day off 40 years later.--------Become a Patron! https://www.patreon.com/thisendsatprom--------MONTHLY SPOTLIGHTAmerica's ToothFairy: https://www.americastoothfairy.org/--------Article MentionedBright Wall/Dark Room: https://www.brightwalldarkroom.com/2023/11/30/ferris-bueller-a-fruitful-life/--------Social Media Plugs@ThisEndsAtProm@BJColangelo@HarmonyColangelo----------Logo Design: Haley Doodles @HaleyDoodleDoTheme Song: The Sonder Bombs 'Title': https://thesonderbombs.bandcamp.com/

Parenting is a Joke
A Bit of Magic with Carlos Greaves

Parenting is a Joke

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2026 28:29

Carlos Greaves returns to the podcast for a closer look at the surprisingly authoritarian role of parenting, beginning with his 18-month-old daughter's new favorite activity: climbing things that are clearly designed for five-year-olds and launching herself toward a seven-foot drop. With essentially no childcare experience before becoming a dad—he had never even changed a diaper until the nurse handed him his daughter in the hospital—Greaves describes figuring out parenting through research, YouTube, books, and an engineer's instinct to identify what he doesn't know, while remaining skeptical of advice that seems to reverse itself every five years. He and Ophira Eisenberg wrestle with the line between letting kids make mistakes and protecting them from hurting themselves or other people, with Greaves admitting that he currently operates at “dad reflex distance,” close enough to catch his daughter but far enough away that she learns to solve problems herself. That tension leads naturally into the mythology of childhood: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the little stories parents tell to make life easier. Greaves remembers his father initially refusing to participate in Santa because he considered it lying, then eventually sitting his eight- or nine-year-old son down to explain the truth—only to be hit with the immediate existential question, “If Santa Claus isn't real, does that mean God isn't real?” Greaves now sees those childhood myths differently, remembering the pleasure of watching younger siblings discover Christmas magic and deciding that if you are going to lie to your kids, it should be for their benefit rather than simply to make your own life easier. The conversation also takes aim at the impossible standards of modern parenting, from organic cotton and wooden toys to BPA-free bottles and the endless question of what, exactly, has replaced the thing labeled “BPA free,” before Greaves offers his own survival tactic for parenting's tiny dictators: eat your snacks in secret before they become smart enough to notice. When Ophira asks what he would tell a child who eventually wants to become either a comedian or a politician, Greaves's answer is revealingly consistent with his satirical worldview: he can live with either, as long as they do not become an asshole—and preferably, she becomes an electrical engineer.

Every parent eventually asks the same question: what does my kid actually need to know about money, and when do I teach it? Today's roundtable brings together three genuinely different perspectives, financial educator Karen Holland of Gifting Sense, middle school teacher and author Alaina Trivax, and Rishi Vamdatt, the now-college-bound creator behind Easy Peasy Finance who started teaching kids about money at age eight. Together they build a real, age-by-age roadmap, from swiping a credit card at six years old to filing taxes for the first time at eighteen. What You'll Walk Away WithWhy waiting until kids are "old enough to understand the math" is one of the most common mistakes parents makeA simple age-by-age breakdown of what to teach, from age six all the way through eighteenWhether you should tell your kids exactly how much you earn, and what to say instead if you'd rather notWhy letting kids make small, affordable money mistakes now protects them from much bigger ones laterHow to talk to kids about in-game currencies and microtransactions in a way that actually sticksA refreshingly simple way to build an allowance system that teaches real financial judgment, not just chore complianceWhy you don't need to be great with money yourself to teach your kids well, and what actually matters more than expertiseWhy This Matters NowIt's easy to feel unqualified to teach your kids about money, especially if your own financial journey has had plenty of stumbles. But the goal was never to have all the answers. It's to normalize talking about money at home, model good decision-making out loud, and let kids practice with small stakes before the stakes get real. A little structure around when to introduce which concepts takes the guesswork out of a subject most parents already feel behind on, and turns it into something manageable, even fun. From the BasementA special exhibition round of trivia brings together three guest contestants for a genuinely close guessing game on the current going rate from the Tooth Fairy, complete with inflation commentary that would make any economist proud.Resources MentionedFollow the Money by Alaina Trivax — Alaina's new activity-based book teaching kids about moneyLet's Make It Grow — Alaina's platform helping parents teach financial literacyGifting Sense — Karen Holland's nonprofit teaching kids mindful spending, including the "Spending Ed" programEasy Peasy Finance — Rishi Vamdatt's YouTube channel and book series, including the new release Easy Peasy StocksSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

So he did, and yet right after doing so, was given another $5 from someone else. God is a generous God, and he wants his people to be generous too. But here is the kicker - those who are will be the ones that God blesses. Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2026 33:33

This week's Talkhouse Podcast features a conversation between two ridiculously talented young songwriter/guitarists in the early days of what will surely be interesting careers: Mei Semones and John Roseboro. Semones famously found her passion for guitar by watching the “Johnny B. Goode” scene in Back to the Future, which led her to music school and the kind of genre-spanning passion that feels refreshingly unfiltered. Sometimes she'll play delicate, jazz-inflected acoustic songs while singing in Japanese; the next minute it's more familiar indie-pop that adds a bit of bossa nova or some shredding. The fact that it doesn't make sense is what makes it make sense, if you get what I mean. Semones was a big hit at this year's experimental-leaning Big Ears Festival, and she's also got a big social media following—that's an odd crossover, or at least I think it is. Next week she'll open a string of shows for American Football on the west coast before heading down to charm Australia. Her first full-length was last year's Animaru, and she followed it recently with an EP called Kurage, which includes a song made with today's other guest, John Roseboro. Roseboro has called his music “post-Bossa Nova” or sometimes just “post-Bossa,” but that only tells part of the story. He's a thoughtful, observant lyricist who's great at building a vibe and then taking it to unexpected places. Like Semones, he lives in Brooklyn, though he ended up there via a strange route that took him to mortuary school and some time among the Amish. His latest full-length is 2024's Fools, but since then he's released a charming cover of the classic “Close To You” that removes a lot of the cheese associated with various other versions over the years. He also collaborated with Semones on a track from her EP that recounts a story of his lost tooth and a meeting on a subway platform. Check out that song, “Tooth Fairy,” right here. In this charming, relentlessly laid-back conversation, Semones and Roseboro—who are good friends, as you'll be able to tell—hit each other with questions that lead everywhere from what food they like on the road to the magic of music. Succumb to their rhythm and enjoy the conversation. 0:00 — Intro 2:28 — Start of conversation 2:50 — If you could be an animal, what would you be? 4:19 — On traveling and finding a home base 5:50 — What do you think about while performing? 8:15 — On noticing the audience at shows, and hecklers 10:10 — On favorite types of food, and go-to deli orders 12:46 — On what makes a good song & lyrics 16:29 — On underrated songs they've made 18:40 — On dreams and dream imagery 20:38 — On Nerd Clusters, snacks, and drinks on rider requests 22:03 — On favorite sports 22:40 — Have you ever been in a fight? 24:49 — On favorite seasons and months 25:13 — On the differences between touring and recording 27:56 — On sleeping 28:55 — On subtlety Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mei Semones and John Roseboro for chatting. 1922's "In a Grove," a short story by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, is a study into the nature of truth. It centers around the death of a samurai, with four different accounts of how he came to meet his demise being presented. Akira Kurosawa, without whom there would be no "Star Wars," adapted the short story into his 1950 film "Rashomon." This episode is neither of those things, but we do get into Helen Keller, Christmas, the Tooth Fairy, and what it is exactly that makes something a lie. Give it a listen, it's a good one. #rashomon #truth #lies #christmas #toothfairy #trading #rabbithole

Ryan Gosling joins the RELEVANT Podcast to talk about his new sci-fi film Project Hail Mary — what made him fall in love with this story and why this one might be a "core memory" film for a generation. Before that, Emily reports from SXSW to break down the week's biggest faith-and-culture stories: a Christian animated short film made by two Pixar animators and 200 volunteers (including musician Josh Garrels) got nominated for an Oscar. Also Christian apologist Wesley Huff went on the popular podcast 'Diary of a CEO' and told Stephen Bartlett to his face he's going to hell. Plus, NFL quarterback Justin Fields reveals he wants to become a missionary after football. Then in Slices: the Tooth Fairy economy is growing (Jesse has a lot of thoughts), a huge scandal in a camel beauty pageant, and you'll never be able to predict this week's 'What's Jesse Thinking?' segment. It's a wild ride this week.Highlights:00:25 — SxSW breakdown: The decline from tech-and-music powerhouse 07:38 — RELEVANT BUZZ07:43 — The Office canon errors: a deep dive nobody asked for (Michael Scott's anniversary math)10:11 — Forevergreen: Oscar-nominated Christian animated short by two Pixar animators + 200 volunteers, featuring Josh Garrels19:22 — Wesley Huff talks Christianity on 'Diary of a CEO'26:07 — NFL QB Justin Fields says he wants to be a missionary after football 30:07 — SLICES30:14 — The Tooth Fairy economy 35:34 — Camel beauty pageant scandal 37:53 — RELEVANT RECOMMENDS: Project Hail Mary 43:25 — Ryan Gosling on why he keeps making space movies and why he won't actually go to space46:42 — Ryan Gosling on why he picked Project Hail Mary — "you would die for this rock alien"48:54 — Ryan Gosling on Project Hail Mary as a "core memory movie" like E.T. and Back to the Future50:01 — WHAT'S JESSE THINKING?: Should Golden Corral run the US government?56:23 — Post-credits: Apology to the estate of Shel SilversteinAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

PRE-ORDER MY NEW BOOK (OUT MAY 5, 2026)!!! — https://bit.ly/43BquPd Gerry came to my house for the Indianapolis show, insulted my daughter's dental hygiene via the Tooth Fairy, may or may not have been exposed to Flu B, and then drove 11 hours home fueled almost entirely by marshmallows. So yes. We have a lot to unpack. We talk about the Terre Haute experience (including Gerry's pilgrimage to the Larry Bird statue), the movies Gerry somehow managed to avoid his entire life, and why he believes Monty Python and the Holy Grail might be one of the worst films ever made, which is an absolutely unhinged opinion. There's also a very important moment where Gerry publicly shoots his shot with one of my friends, a discussion about the truly shocking things parents would hear if they spent one day in a classroom, and multiple interruptions from my children who apparently believe recording a podcast is the perfect time to ask for snacks or show me injuries. Takeaways: The unexpected road snack that immediately became a terrible idea. Gerry's extremely controversial movie take that I refuse to accept. The one thing parents would be shocked to hear happening in classrooms. The on-air romantic confession I absolutely did not see coming. Why recording a podcast with kids in the house is… unpredictable. -- Teachers' night out? Yes, please!
