Throughout their interviews, Memory Makers expressed appreciation for the engaging, interactive training style, led by energetic instructors like Teresa, which kept everyone involved and eager to learn. Welcome to the third episode in the Ashley's 'Right to Win' Product Knowledge Boot Camp series from Stories from the River. Charlie Malouf introduces Chris Berrier, Area Manager of Supernova in the North region. The conversation highlights the extensive boot camp training underway, which draws Memory Makers from three states, taking place in eight different host stores, with sessions led by experienced trainers like Teresa Thompson from Ashley Furniture's Field Sales team. The training focuses primarily on deepening product knowledge across various categories, while also weaving in essential sales techniques to help Memory Makers better connect with guests and boost both confidence and performance. Chris shares insights on the broader impact of such hands-on learning, emphasizing the vital role it plays in both immediate sales success and long-term growth for Broad River Retail. He points out that investments like these not only sharpen skills—embodying the "iron sharpens iron" philosophy—but also contribute to higher retention and better paychecks for HFCs (Memory Makers).  The conversation covers how Chris plans to sustain the momentum after the boot camp, from ongoing coaching to refresher activities, and reinforces the value of an open, eager approach to learning. Chris leaves listeners with advice for new Memory Makers: "Be a thief of knowledge," always ready to soak up information. Wrapping up, he suggests that bringing the sleep category into future training sessions will bolster confidence even further, and sums up the boot camp spirit with a proposed T-shirt slogan: "Be ready." Find out how this company-wide training is shaping retail teams and driving results across multiple locations. We cover a lot in this episode – from why Western Wisconsin is such a manufacturing hub to the upcoming Wanek Center of Innovation at Western Technical College and what it will mean for manufacturing businesses and students.Kris and Josh share their predictions on the industry, talk about apprenticeships, and the type of skills and technology that future manufacturers will get to learn at places like Western Technical College. Furniture Industry News – September 9, 2024Welcome to today's episode of Furniture Industry News. Here are the key updates:Potential Strike at East Coast PortsA major strike looms over East Coast ports, with labor negotiations between dockworkers and the U.S. Maritime Alliance stalled. The strike, set to begin on October 1, could disrupt shipments and impact the furniture industry's supply chain. Importers are advised to delay shipments and prepare for possible delays, while container rates, although currently low, are expected to spike as shippers divert to West Coast ports.Big Lots Files for Chapter 11 BankruptcyBig Lots has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and entered a sale agreement with Nexus Capital Management. High inflation and interest rates have hit the retailer hard, reducing discretionary spending. The acquisition aims to stabilize and streamline operations, although store closures are expected. This restructuring effort is seen as a path toward a more profitable future.Furniture Brands Among Big Lots' Top CreditorsNotable furniture companies are among the largest creditors in Big Lots' bankruptcy case. Ashley Furniture is owed $12 million, while Serta is owed $6 million. The top 30 creditors, including Fusion Furniture and Sealy Inc., are collectively owed more than $75 million. This underscores the ripple effect Big Lots' financial struggles have on the broader furniture industry.Specialty Mattress Stores vs. Big Box RetailersA comparison of big box stores like Target and Walmart with specialty mattress retailers reveals that specialty stores excel in product presentation and customer service. Big box stores often display mattresses poorly, while specialty stores offer a more curated shopping experience with knowledgeable staff. Despite lower prices, big box retailers fall short in creating an inviting atmosphere, which provides an opportunity for specialty retailers to attract discerning customers.High Point Market – Hot Spot ToursThe upcoming High Point Market, from October 26-29, will feature exclusive Hot Spot Tours led by top interior designers. These themed tours provide attendees with a curated look at innovative showrooms, offering insider insights and design trends. Each tour starts at The Point on Commerce Avenue, and registration is required in advance.

Meet Emily McGarvey, furniture maker and retailer Room & Board's first Director of Sustainability. The company, founded in 1980, recently became an employee-owned B Corporation. Room & Board has made significant efforts to reduce the environmental impact by engaging 12,000 U.S. craftspeople to make its furniture, achieving 95% sustainable wood sourcing, including using urban wood recovered for reuse in tables and chairs and making 51% of its packaging recyclable on the path to 100% targets in 2025.The global furniture industry is expected to see $765 billion in sales this year, according to a Statista analysis, and $133 billion of that in the United States. Reducing the carbon emissions associated with home furnishings — from sourcing wood and materials near producers to shortening supply chains to minimize the need for shipping — can make more sustainable choices available to consumers. For example, the retail chain Ashley Furniture has the seventh largest ocean shipping carbon footprint among major brands because most of its manufacturing is based in Asia. You can learn more about Room & Board at https://www.roomandboard.com/ Correction: A reference to Room & Board's recyclable packaging progress needed to be corrected. Rather than having achieved 89% recyclable packaging, the company currently uses 51% recyclable material -- its goal is to reach 100% by 2025.

She has facilitated workshops using simultaneous (concurrent) translation in Russian, French and Spanish and has worked with companies in Russia, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Korea, and the United States. Wendi has worked with companies such as Godiva Chocolatier, Best Buy, Yankee Candle, Ashley Furniture, David Yurman New York, La-Z-Boy Home Furnishings, and more. Wendi has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.  In this episode, Dean Newlund and Wendi Swanson discuss:The challenges leaders face in inspiring followership and driving meaningful change post-COVIDThe importance of a human-centered approach to growth and redefining leadershipThe impact of AI and today's fast-paced market on leadership competenciesThe shift towards remote work and the challenges of maintaining company culture and effectively leading hybrid teamsThe growing movement of people rediscovering themselves, their purpose, and their relationships with others Key Takeaways:Leaders must adapt to the significant changes in the workforce brought about by COVID-19, such as the reduction in the market and the shift towards remote work and innovation. The hybrid work model has led to challenges in maintaining company culture and effectively leading teams, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of this model and its impact on mental health and human connection.Leaders who intentionally invest in people, creating impact through influence and inspiration, can make a difference in culture and productivity.Effective coaching involves understanding the underlying mindsets and behaviors that impact performance, rather than simply telling someone to sell more or work harder.Changing employee beliefs about products or services is key to hitting sales targets, which can be achieved through positive and negative customer experiences that demonstrate the value of what's being offered. "Leadership can be measured through the willingness of others to follow and the impact a leader has on their team.” — Wendi Swanson CATCH WENDY'S WORKSHOP:Wendi is leading a live 2-day workshop designed to provide a blueprint to brick-and-mortar retailers around the world, that helps them to adapt to the changing landscape so they can provide a differentiated CX that surges sales. In this episode of Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf continues his conversation with Dr. Timothy Nelson, Founder and CEO of HeartWorks. They discuss how HeartWorks is focused on using innovative technology to address heart failure, particularly through the development and transplantation of autologous heart tissue. HeartWorks was the first organization in the world to obtain FDA approval to do an autologous heart transfer procedure.  Dr. Nelson explains the complex, 9-month process of manufacturing cells from a patient's own body to create beating heart tissue, which can then be transplanted back into the patient without rejection. He also shares success stories of patients who have benefitted from these groundbreaking procedures, highlighting the transformative outcomes that HeartWorks is aiming to achieve. The episode also delves into the purpose, vision, and mission of HeartWorks, emphasizing the urgency to treat congenital heart disease (CHD) and its commitment to redefining the possibilities in medical research. HeartWorks builds hearts to cure CHD. They are a clinical stage nonprofit working to make that vision a reality.  Dr. Nelson explains the 5 things that they think about at HeartWorks:  1. Motivated by the urgency of congenital heart families. Put the patient first. 2. Motivated by transformative outcomes. A pathway to a cure. To go rebuild the heart to have a transformative outcome.  3. Undeterred by obstacles. No way that this will be a linear path. No way that this will be simple.  4. Synergistic and winnable for hospitals and patients. Inspire, motivate, and align people.  5. Committed to a self-reliant ecosystem. Building a platform where this technology can be applied to anybody with heart failure.  Dr. Nelson introduces the transformative concept of data donation, where individuals with congenital heart disease can contribute their medical records to create a repository that will revolutionize the way medical research is conducted, potentially leading to faster and more targeted product development.  HeartWorks created a new movement around "Data Donation" when they launched a Co-Op at their annual fundraiser event with the goal of getting 50,000 people with CHD to donate their data, which Dr. Nelson explains with accelerate their clinical trials by 4X. As Dr. Nelson explains, no hospital is large enough to take on a challenge such as this on their own; however, HeartWorks as a nonprofit, trusted partner can work across any hospital and bring patients together to create this transformative data repository. Dr. Nelson emphasizes that it is important for patients to realize that they own their medical records, not hospitals, and can donate their medical records data (such as history of surgeries and cardiac imaging). Charlie and Dr. Nelson discuss the relationship between HeartWorks, Ashley Furniture, and Broad River Retail and the benefits that each organization receives from the relationship transcends monetary value. This conversation underscores the collaborative and transformative nature of HeartWorks' work as well as its reliance on community support and partnerships to drive the organization's mission forward.  This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Ea1C-msQk_k  Additional Resources:  HeartWorks - https://www.webuildhearts.org  Listen to part one of the HeartWorks conversation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIJAImWjRRw  This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/vIJAImWjRRw  Visit https://www.storiesfromtheriver.com for more episodes.

In this episode, Charlie continues his conversation with Jonathan Ishee, his former business partner and one of Broad River's original co-founders.  You will learn of the first time the company changed its identity to Broad River, becoming Broad River Furniture. Charlie and Jonathan discuss how the company survived a pivotal point of its history during the Great Recession by maintaining a specific and strategic growth mindset.   This new strategy began by delivering to remote markets for the first time when Ashley Furniture deployed its Good Samaritan Fund and called on them to assist its customers its surrounding, outer markets. Offering to assist planted the seed for a new idea to leverage their centralized operations and ultimately unlocked a way to strategically grow during the Great Recession.  Lengthening their runway and dollar cost averaging their portfolio of store leases allowed them to add stability to the Company by growing through the opening of new stores in new markets. Leveraging the power of their core value of collaboration - through humility the best decisions were made together - served them well during this era.  This episode is a great reminder that sometimes the right strategy during challenging economic times is one where you focus on staying in the game, which will typically refine a Company's grit and identity and set it up to grow and thrive through any season.  This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/WdlqZ0-v4oc  We hope you enjoy this episode, and subscribe to our podcast for a new story each week.  Visit  https://www.storiesfromtheriver.com for more episodes

The two also reminisce on how they started working together (even before Broad River, back when they both lived in Jackson, Mississippi).
