Americans have a glum view of the economy, but that is not expected to affect their consumer spending as holiday shopping kicks off.     According to a recent Fox News survey, 76% of Americans have a negative view of the economy. At the end of President Joe Biden's term, this number was 70%. Yet while Americans appear to be losing faith in the vitality of the U.S. economy, they don't plan on slowing their own holiday shopping habits.     The International Council of Shopping Centers reports that between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday, 235 million American adults are expected to spend $127 billion, for an average of $542 a person—a $13 increase from the average spent over the long holiday weekend last year.     Millennials are projected to be the biggest spenders, with the International Council of Shopping Center estimating the generation born between 1981 and 1996 will drop an average of $764 a person during the five-day shopping period.     So what's the disconnect? Why do the same Americans who feel the economy is flooding appear to feel good enough about their personal bank account to go out and drop several hundred dollars in just a few days? Nicole Huyer, a senior research associate in The Heritage Foundation's Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies, joins this week's edition of “Problematic Women” to discuss.     Also on today's show, we discuss spending differences between men and women. Plus, will New York City-Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani actually be able to implement his socialist wish list in the Big Apple? And if he can, what will that mean not only for New York City's economy, but the economic health of the nation.     Catch the conversation on this week's edition of “Problematic Women.”   00:00 Welcome! 02:16  Generational Shopping Habit 11:20 Trump and Elon are Back? 19:02 Economic Long Game vs. Short Term Gains 20:28 Zohran Mamdani and NYC's Affordability Crisis 28:50 Christmas Season Begins 34:13 Final Thoughts and Farewell Connect with our hosts on socials!   Elise McCue X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=EliseMcCue Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisemccueofficial/   Virginia Allen: X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=Virginia_Allen5 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/virginiaallenofficial/   Morgonn McMichael: X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=morgonnm Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/morgonnm/ Keep Up With The Daily Signal   Sign up for our email newsletters: https://www.dailysignal.com/email     Subscribe to our other shows:    The Tony Kinnett Cast: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2284199939 The Signal Sitdown: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2026390376   Problematic Women: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL7765680741   Victor Davis Hanson: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL9809784327     Follow The Daily Signal:    X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=DailySignal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailysignal/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDailySignalNews/  Truth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@DailySignal  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/dailysignal?sub_confirmation=1    Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and never miss an episode. Ashe in America, Abbey Blue Eyes, Christy Lupo, and Jackie Espada return for a hilariously chaotic episode of Alphas Make Sandwiches, starting with tech trouble, backseat kids, and Jackie's coughing fits before diving into holidays, gift shopping, and the eternal battle between “girl math” and real budgets. Abbey shares her panic over last-minute Thanksgiving hosting, Ashe rants about customer-service nightmares and missing packages, Christy brings the idiom of the week (“Know your onions”), and Jackie delivers a migraine-survival segment packed with electrolytes, oils, and pressure-point hacks. The girls spiral through topics like buggy Amazon drivers, 200-item carts, late-night anxiety, CleanTok cleaning obsessions, lip-flip Botox disasters, church outfits, Soft Disclosure skincare, and stomach-virus horror stories, punctuated by barking dogs, rogue children, and relentless giggles. It's peak AMS energy: unfiltered, funny, chaotic, and comfortingly relatable.

“I just spent $100, but I got a $10 reward, so I made $10.” “I paid with cash so it's free because it's not coming out of my bank account.“Perhaps you've seen the videos of people, particularly women, humorously trying to describe and justify the illogical financial decisions they make. Girl math, as it's been coined, became a social media trend in 2023 and still remains relevant. However, there is more to the humorous social media trend than bad math and justifying unnecessary purchases. There are real reasons and studies behind why people think the way they do when it comes to spending habits. Whether you've seen this trend (and fall into this mindset!) or not, this episode is for you! With a background in finance and a deep passion for helping people understand money, Grant shares practical habits you can put in place so you don't let advertisements or the so-called “discounts“ control the way you spend your money. Know someone who has seen or participated in this trend or maybe needs to make better spending decisions? You should share this episode! This is a public episode. Today we're talking about “girl math”, but not in the way TikTok wants you to. My guest is Meg Wheeler, CPA, financial educator, founder of the Equitable Money Project, and all-around champion for financial equity. We unpack the viral "girl math" trend and why it may seem harmless but actually reinforces some pretty dangerous stereotypes about women and money. Meg and I both agree: women are not bad at math—and this kind of messaging does more harm than good. But we don't stop there. We also dig into what it really takes to build wealth when you don't come from generational wealth, how financial knowledge—not money—is often the most valuable asset, and why staying politically engaged is a financial strategy. Meg also talks about her popular Substack Call Your Representatives, and we close out with a little joy: what she's happily spending her money on this summer. It's a whirlwind tour through the irrationalities that shape our world, all delivered with Rory's signature wit, humor and undiagnosed ADHD.Some highlights for me included:Emotional support vapes and the peculiar concept of "Hooters Air"The psychology behind "girl math" and why price is just a feelingThe unexpected brilliance of Chaiwala's hidden improvementsThe history and psychology of run clubs and joggingClub Penguin's wild side and internet chaos in the UKThe infamous "dogging not jogging" jokeRory's love for Heathrow's parking podsThe idea of drone ambulances and future rescue techWhat Rory would do if he wasn't Rory SutherlandAnd of course his Origin Story inclusive of his journey with depression, anxiety, and the utility of his fameWhether you're a fan of behavioral science, marketing or just looking for a good laugh, this will be an instant favourite.Timestamps:00:00 – Introduction10:00 – Why Apple Vision Pro Failed17:10 – Emotional Support Vapes & Hooters Air24:10 – How Irrationality Helps Solve Crimes34:10 – "Girl Math" & Private Members Clubs42:57 – Psychology of Run Clubs & Jogging48:10 – Club Penguin's Wild Side55:10 – Rory's Love for Heathrow's Parking Pods1:02:10 – How Good Markets Kill Bad Products1:10:10 – Has Anyone Ever Been Killed by a Drone?1:20:10 – JP Morgan and the Cost of Commitment1:26:10 – Rory on Depression and Anxiety1:31:10 – Rory's Testimony on David-Sponsors:Fireflies.AIFireflies.ai is an AI-powered meeting assistant that transcribes, summarizes, and analyzes your conversations, making it easier to focus on what truly matters. Inappropriate Quilters

This week the girls catch up and Leslie gets to hear all about Rochelle's great painting adventure in Texas! But first, an update on her mom, Pat who just had a scary injury. Rochelle's Texas trip involved not quilting, but PAINTING a chair and a teapot. It was her first adventure off doing something where she didn't know anyone and they didn't know her. So, this was a great experience for her, but exhausting! It was an Alice in Wonderland theme party and there were costumes involved. She is also heading to Nebraska soon to visit our other friends and have some quilty time with them. She will head back Tuesday though in order to be here for our friend, Melissa's husband Steve's funeral service. He was a dear friend to our local quilting community and a true hard-working supporter of his wife and best friend. He will be truly missed by many. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Steve Struttmann and the honor of our friend, Melissa Struttmann. To help Melissa during this time of grief, please consider buying a pattern on her website osagehillsretreat.com. To send Melissa a card of encouragement, please mail to: Melissa Struttmann, 4800 W.
