On February 4, 2010 a family of four from Fallbrook, CA just up and vanished in a mystery that had their family and law enforcement stumped for over three years. No evidence of a crime of violence was found in their house and their vehicle was located 4 days later next to a border crossing into Mexico. Video later surfaced showing a family of four walking into Mexico on the night the family vehicle was abandoned. Law enforcement stated in April of 2013 that they believed the family voluntarily disappeared into Mexico. But on Nov 11, 2013 a dirt bike rider outside Victorville, CA located two shallow graves with human remains that were later ID'd as the McStay Family. They had been bludgeoned to death by a 3 lbs sledgehammer. A work associate of Joseph McStay was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death for the brutal crime. In September of 1981 in Bavaria, Germany, 10 year old Ursula Hermann was abducted while riding her bike near a forest in her hometown. A large ransom was requested by the kidnappers but after they stopped communicating with the family, a search of the forest located a buried wooden box with a seat, toilet, bench, books, food, water, radio, light and the lifeless body of Ursula. She had died very early into the crime as there was inadequate oxygen exchange due to air pipes being clogged with wet leaves. Police spent 2 decades building a case and finally charged a local man with the crime. The charges and conviction were highly controversial and to this day many think a killer is out there. His DNA showed up at a separate crime scene in 2006 and it wasn't the DNA of the man convicted of Ursula's crime. Listen along as we cover this case in a 3 part series and try to bring answers to the Girl in the box or in German, Das Madchen in der Kiste. Music by Gioele Fazzeri from Pixabay
