Send us a Text Message. In February 2010, the McStay family—Joseph, Summer, and their two young children, Gianni and Joseph Jr.—vanished without a trace from their home in Fallbrook, California. Their disappearance quickly became one of the most perplexing and chilling mysteries of the decade. The McStays seemed to lead a normal life, running a small business and living in a modest home. But on February 4th, the family's sudden and unexplained disappearance set off alarm bells. The last known sighting of them was captured on a security camera of their car leaving their driveway. Months passed, and the case grew colder. Speculation ranged from theories of a financial dispute gone awry to potential connections with criminal networks. The McStay family's sudden and eerie silence left investigators grasping for answers. Then, in November 2013, the case took a harrowing twist. On February 4, 2010, Joseph and Summer McStay, as well as their two toddler sons, Joseph, Jr. and Gianni vanished from their home. Nine days after they went missing, it was reported to police, as people realized that they had not simply went on vacation. Joseph's vehicle was found left at the United States Mexico border, and the scene in their home looked as if they were taken in the middle of a normal day as popcorn had been spilled on the couch, and a carton of raw eggs had been left on the counter. The family's remains were finally found in a shallow grave in the desert on November 13, 2013 by a passing motorcyclist. It was determined that the family had died from blunt force trauma. Joseph's friend and business partner, Charles "Chase" Ray Merritt was arrested in November of 2014 when his DNA had been found in the family's vehicle. He had bludgeoned the family to death with a sledgehammer and buried them in the desert, all for financial gain as he had a gambling addiction. Chase Merritt was sentenced to death finally 10 years after the crime in January 2020. The McStay Family of 4 disappeared on February 4, 2010. Summer McStay (age 43), her husband Joseph (aged 40), and their young sons Gianni (4) and Joseph Jr (3) were living in beautiful San Diego, CA home, and vanished. Had they taken a vacation and not told anyone? Surely they would not just leave their dogs outside. Did they cross the border to start a new life in Mexico? Summer had always said she would not go to Mexico. Who could have done this? In 2010, Joseph and Summer McStay and their two young children vanished in California. The police had trouble figuring out exactly what happened to the family of four. Over the years, many theories were floated including that a grainy video showed the family fleeing to Mexico. Many theories revolved around Summer having something to do with Joseph's murder and then taking off with the children. But, when the bodies of the family were found years later, those theories were dispelled. In the end, the police pieced together that one of Joseph's business associates was involved. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the bizarre case of the McStay family murders. Joseph owned a business and there were a number of financial transactions that didn't quite add up. But, the police had an uphill battle. The McStay home had been cleaned up by family members. Eyewitnesses came forward to give a description that police followed up on for yes, only to find out later that it was based on lies. They worked through all of this until they were finally able to pin down one man, Chase Merritt, as the culprit responsible for murdering all four of the McStays. On today's episode we delve into the mystery of the Mcstay family. There one day... and vanished the next. This case leaves us with one question: was it murder, or Mexico? Joseph McStay and his wife, Summer, and their 4- and 3-year sons, Gianni and Joseph Jr., were a fun-loving, happy family who'd recently settled into a comfortable life in Fallbrook, California. Situated in northern San Diego County, the community is known as “The Friendly Village.” Sadly, disaster would soon strike the tranquil town.
On February 15, Michael phoned the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSD) and reported that his brother and his family was missing. Officers arrived at the home and requested a search warrant, executed on February 19, 2010. Although a search of the house found no evidence of struggle or foul play, there were indications of a hasty departure: a carton of eggs had been left on the counter and two child-size bowls of popcorn sat on a sofa. This week, Amy and Chris delve into 2 horrific family murders. In the first half, Chris recounts the slaying of the McStay Family in the affluent Fallbrook, California. The McStay Family consisted of father Joseph, mother Summer, and children 4-year-old Gianni and 3-year-old Joseph Jr. Over a few days in early February 2010, friends and family of the family attempted to locate them, but they seemingly abandoned their car and belongings. On November 11, 2013, the remains of the family were found in the desert surrounding Victorville, California. Further investigation determined that Joseph's business partner Charles "Chase" Merritt was the likely culprit due to his connection with the family, his shady past and gambling debts. On January 21, 2020, Chase was sentenced to death by a jury, but is there more to this story? The second story has baffled investigators for almost a century! Amy recaps the case of the Gruber family murders, also known as The Hinterkaifeck murders. After the family was absent from the town for an entire week, the townspeople became concerned. Finally, investigators searched the house and found all 6 members of the family, as well as the maid who had just started her first day, brutally murdered by a farming mattock. They also found that someone, most likely the killer, had hung around the house after March 31, 1922, the night the family was slain. Though many have been arrested and investigated, there are still no lead suspects and the mystery of this horrible crime may never be solved.
