Serial Killer Moses Sithole Documentary The "Ted Bundy Of South Africa" Born in South Africa on November 17, 1964, Moses Sithole is considered one of South Africa's worst serial killers. In 1997, Sithole was found guilty of 38 murders and 40 rapes. A significant number of Sithole's victims were never identified. Sithole would gain access to victims by pretending to be a businessman and offering them work, going so far as to invent a fictional charity organization. Once he had gained their trust, he would offer to walk them through a veld (an Afrikaans word literally meaning "field") to the "business headquarters" until they were out of sight and hearing range; he would then overpower, rape and strangle them. By 1995, he had claimed over 30 victims, igniting a nationwide panic. In some cases, he would call the victim's family and taunt them. In August 1995, Sithole was identified as having been seen with one of the victims; police soon discovered details of his fake business and previous rape conviction. Panicked, he went on the run. He called journalist Tamsen de Beer and identified himself as the killer. At the third call, he gave De Beer a number to call back. The police rushed to the pay phone he was calling from, but they were too late. Shortly after that Sithole contacted his brother-in-law, who promised him to help him get a gun and arranged a meeting. The brother-in-law notified the police, but Sithole sensed a trap at the meeting spot and ran.  Police shot him twice when he charged them with an axe, wounding him before taking him into custody. He eventually confessed to the murders. On December 5, 1997, Sithole was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment for each of the 38 murders, 12 years imprisonment for each of the 40 rapes, and five years imprisonment for each of the six robberies. Since his sentences run consecutively, the total effective sentence is thus one of 2,410 years. Justice David Carstairs ordered that Sithole would be required to serve at least 930 years before being eligible for parole (in around 2927). He is incarcerated in C-Max, the maximum security section of Pretoria Central Prison, during this time, press reports stated that he was HIV positive. He receives treatment for the virus while in prison, but his wife and child died of the disease because law abiding citizens do not automatically qualify for any sort of health care coverage until age 65. In 1994 and 1995 post-apartheid South Africa a monster was on the loose. He enticed women that were living on the streets or had low paying jobs with the promise of higher wages to work at his various fictitious organizations that centered around preventing abuse against women and children. By the time police caught up with him he had murdered between 38-76 women in 18 months, leaving their bodies around the towns of Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland (suburb of Johannesburg), and the media dubbed him the ABC Killer. On September 17, 1995, in Boksburg, South Africa, a Johannesburg Police Reservist had the day off and decided to enjoy the day by hunting rabbits. As the man was walking in the field, the putrid smell hit him. It smelled of death, but it was not just one decomposing body, but several. This was the dumping ground and the killing field of a serial killer. Some bodies were unrecognizable since they had been out there a long time, while others looked freshly killed. Thirty police officers, dogs, and a helicopter were called for a grid search. The police believed they knew who was responsible for these deaths since they knew a killer had been working in the area for nearly a year, but this was new. The killer had been killing women and dumping them but never like this, never all in one spot. He was getting reckless and didn't care, or he was getting brave and better at his actions. The mass grave held ten bodies. Authorities would discover many more bodies in the places such as Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland, earning him the moniker ABC Killer. All the victims had arranged to meet a man for job interviews and were never seen alive again. Serial Killing : A Podcast

Born into extreme poverty during apartheid in South Africa, his father died when he was young and he was abandoned by his mother shortly after. Welcome to the 23rd episode of Wild Society! This week’s murder case takes us to South Africa where we learn about the country’s most notorious serial killer, Moses Sithole. Having been raised in the time of apartheid, abandoned by his mother, abused, and feeling out of control of his own life - Moses developed a hatred for women that would drive him to kill at least 38 people, although police suspect somewhere closer to 70.The future is unpredictable. Or is it? Millions say one philosopher and chemist born in the 1500s predicted the future - including events happening today. From world wars to Hitler to COVID-19 and more, Nostradamus has been credited for predicting the world's most historic events. Moses Sithole, known as the ABC Killer, is considered South Africa’s most prolific serial killer after he was captured and convicted of 38 counts of murder, including the two-year old son of one of his female victims, as well as 40 counts of rape and 6 counts of robbery. He preyed on women with promises of a job and then lured them to isolated areas in Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland where he would beat and rape them before strangling them with their own underwear.Join me on social media by following Mask of Sanity on Instagram (@maskofsanitythepodcast) and Twitter (@masksanitypod) for more updates on upcoming episodes! Two women trying to get into the mind of the serial killer talk to Kim Chakanetsa about the craft of crime fiction. We hear what they're most afraid of, how writing about grim subjects has altered their outlook on life and whether women are particularly good at this genre. Patricia Cornwell is probably the best known female crime writer in the world. Credited with creating the 'forensic thriller', Patricia has sold over 100 million books across the globe and recently published the 24th book in her hugely popular Kay Scarpetta series. Patricia has also long been fascinated by Jack the Ripper, the infamous Victorian serial killer, and has written her own account of his possible identity. Angela Makholwa is a former South African journalist who first got into crime writing after interviewing the real-life serial killer, Moses Sithole, in prison. Her debut novel Red Ink was loosely based on those experiences. She says the role of the writer is to confront the things we all want to run away from. She has since written two more novels and says she enjoys reading crime fiction from Scandinavia, given that she writes about such a radically different part of the world. Angela lives and works in Johannesburg. (L) Image: Patricia Cornwell. Credit: Patrick Ecclesine. (R) Image and credit: Angela Makholwa.
