Construction has begun at the site of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community campus in Vaughan, Ont. for the Honey and Barry Sherman Arena. The $52 million dollar arena–to be attached to the existing JCC complex–is a gift from their son Jonathan Sherman to the Toronto Jewish community. The late Sherman's three surviving daughters are not participating. It would make the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto the only JCC in Canada, and in North America, to own its own indoor ice hockey arena. With two NHL-sized rinks, stands, dressing rooms and a kosher snack bar, the arena is designed to provide badly-needed ice facilities for Jewish youth players and figure skaters, too. It will also be open to rentals by the wider community, where ice time is at a premium. Jonathan Sherman admits the announcement brings “heavy emotions” because the 2017 murders of his billionaire philanthropist parents have not been solved. But on this day, Sherman says he wants to focus on continuing their legacy of community building. On this episode of The CJN Daily, we hear from Adam Minsky, the CEO of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto; Christopher Ainsworth, the city councillor for the City of Vaughan where the project got the green light, and words from Jonathan Sherman himself. What we talked about Read about the construction of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic campus in Vaughan over the years in The CJN, including the official opening in 2012. After the murders of Barry and Honey Sherman in 2017, their legacy of philanthropy was in the spotlight, in 2018 in The CJN. Learn why the northern campuses of TanenbaumCHAT high school and Leo Baeck day schools closed in 2017 and 2019 respectively, at the Lebovic Jewish campus, in The CJN. People have been alternately ticked, thrilled, and confused since the Biden Administration rolled out its loan forgiveness program. So, what's the deal? Jared gets insights from student loan lawyer Adam Minsky on the many moving parts of this program, who qualifies/how to apply, and the program's current hold due to legal challenges under consideration in a federal appeals court. In the Rump Roast, Jared and Adam play “Forgive Me,” where Adam must choose which historical blunders to erase in a variety of categories. Will he choose Kevin Costner's appearance in Waterworld? Russia selling Alaska to the US for 4.2 million? Those publishers who rejected Harry Potter? Eesh. Blunders, indeed. And, Coldplay's Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends wins a spot on Jared's list of perfect albums! Since Jared's a bit of a music aficionado, it really says something that he's picked an album by a band many music snobs love to (pretend to?) hate. Tune in for his take on this triumphal offering from well-loved, well-hated Coldplay. Adam S. Minsky is one of the nation's leading authorities on student loan law. ----- Just because we talked about Coldplay's 'perfect' album - 'Viva La Vide or Death and All His Friends' doesn't mean we can't go beyond. MORE COLDPLAY! ----- Our opening track is Two Cigarettes by Major Label Interest. The music for the Legal Trends Report Minute is I See You by Sounds Like Sander. Our closing track is Ethereal Morning by Drew Henmi.

Today, Canadian politicians, Israeli diplomats and the leaders of Canada's largest Jewish organizations are quietly convening in Ottawa to host an off-the-record conference called the "Canadian Summit of Israeli-Jewish Affairs". Set up by the Israeli embassy to Canada, the conference will include talks on bilateral relations, fostering positive narratives on social media, encouraging Jewish education, diversity within the community, campus anti-Zionism and antisemitism and other subjects pertinent to both countries. Among the attendees are Israeli journalists, like Lahav Harkov of the Jerusalem Post; Canadian leaders, like Adam Minsky and Shimon Koffler-Fogel; and Israeli politicians, like Nachman Shai, the country's Minister of Diaspora Affairs. This is Shai's first visit to Canada as Diaspora minister in the new Bennett goverment. Ahead of the main event, he spent some time with The CJN Daily's Ellin Bessner in an exclusive interview. In their wide-ranging discussion, the two discuss how Israel is handling the fallout from the death of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, Shai's frustrations with his government's stalling on egalitarianism at the Western Wall, and the possibility of new elections coming soon. What we talked about: Read The CJN's previous coverage of Nachman Shai Follow Shai on Twitter to see his updates from the Ottawa conference Credits The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). It's been a month since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, forcing 10 million Ukrainians to leave their homes, including nearly four million refugees. Many have fled to neighbouring Poland, which is where a number of Canadian Jewish community and non-profit leaders have flown to personally engage with and witness the tragedy unfold. Back on Canadian soil, numerous charities and NGOs, including Jewish ones such as B'nai Brith, continue to hold donation drives where they accept old clothing, blankets, shampoo, personal hygiene products, flashlights and more. These are understandable reactions to a global crisis. But they may not be helping as much as people think. It's become evident that refugees in Poland have ready access to many items being donated, and flying boxes of old clothing from Canada to Europe may not be the best use of anyone's time, money or resources. Goods can be purchased in Europe and transported much more efficiently, affordably and with less of a carbon footprint. Meanwhile, the abundance of rabbis and community leaders travelling to the border has been criticized as mere "disaster tourism." To dig into these issues, we're joined by Kate Bahen, the managing director of Charity intelligence Canada, a watchdog organization that provides transparency and resources for Canadians looking for the smartest ways to donate their dollars. Plus, our resident rabbi explains to David what it means that he's a kohen in the modern world, we catch up on updates from past episodes, and the hosts discuss an age-old question: is daylight saving time good for the Jews? Only two Canadians joined a recent trip to Ukraine put together by the Jewish Federations of North America. Linda Frum, board chair of Toronto's Federation, and Adam Minsky, its president and CEO, travelled to the Polish-Ukrainian border to see firsthand where the millions of dollars raised by Canadians—including $4 million by Jewish Canadians alone—are going. The United Nations now says 10 million Ukrainians have left their homes because of the war—a quarter of the entire country's population. Money raised by Canadian Federations has so far mainly gone to help two groups doing work on the ground, the American Jewish Joint Distrubution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel. But what does that look like? What is the scene like on the ground, and how are Jewish NGOs helping? Frum and Minsky join to share what they saw, what they learned and why they don't expect many Ukrainian refugees to arrive on Canadian soil.
