In Episode 63, the focus of discussions in on two main topics: new Prime Minister Mark Carney's early days at the helm of Canada, and tariffs. Frank discusses Carney's decision to travel to Europe before the US, a move that was criticized by Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, and the significant downsizing of the new Liberal cabinet, a move that was sure to hurt some feelings inside the caucus. Frank provides the pros and cons of choosing Carney or Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to represent Canada in negotiations with President Trump, and he debunks the recent claims by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper that Carney didn't deserve credit for Canada's response to the GFC. In the tariff discussion, Frank dismisses Trump's repeated exaggerations about trade deficits equaling some sort of subsidy provided to Canada from the US. Frank counters that the existing trade deficit is not a subsidy that costs the United States jobs, instead it is a function of our abundance of raw material inputs that the United States imports from Canada. Frank also lays to rest any notion that Canada's dairy sector is not open for business with US suppliers; in fact, the US has yet to use up more than ½ of its dairy quotas with Canada since the 2018 CUSMA agreement set new free trade supply limits. Frank finishes with some ideas for Canada's government to meet its NATO spending commitments, and his belief in the need to keep momentum moving forward with respect to the elimination of intra-provincial trade barriers. Back in 2022 we bought the contents of an estate that was one for the history books. The estate had close to 800 NOS body panels, including hoods, doors, quarter panels and front fenders. We filled two 26' box trucks, a 20' trailer and still left some parts behind. The old warehouse looked like a bomb went off for months till we were able to get everything inventoried and listed!! For Valentine's Day, we're taking a trip down memory lane! In this episode, we're sharing all the details about our honeymoons—how we booked them before we knew about points and miles, what we spent back then, and what we'd do today now that we're points-savvy. Spoiler alert: our original honeymoons were not nearly as luxurious (or strategic!) as what we could plan today. Pam's “Not-So-Luxurious” Road Trip Honeymoon Pam kicks things off by sharing her 1974 honeymoon—let's just say, points and miles were not a thing, and neither was luxury travel. If she could redo it today, Pam would plan a dreamy trip to Greece, flying Emirates business class, stopping in NYC on the way, and relaxing at stunning hotels in Santorini and Crete—all on points. Alex's Two-Part Honeymoon: Park City & Mexico Since Alex's husband played college football, their wedding date was dictated by the sports schedule, leaving them with a tight honeymoon window. Flights and accommodations came from family gifts. Today, she would book an easy, stress-free honeymoon at the Andaz Maui using points and a travel credit for a rental car—keeping the travel cost to just $22! Jess's First Trip to Europe: Budget Paris & London Jess technically did use miles for her honeymoon—but in the least efficient way possible. Jess's economy flights to Europe came from years of earning miles on a single airline card. Looking back, she would book Emirates first class to Italy, stay at the Grand Hotel Victoria in Lake Como, and enjoy luxury Hyatt stays in Florence—all for far less out of pocket than she originally spent! Why We'd Do Things Differently Today Weddings are expensive, but newlyweds can use their wedding expenses to earn credit card welcome offers. That means luxurious hotels, business-class flights, and less out of pocket than budget honeymoons! And the best part is taking “honeymoon-level” trips every single year—because why limit luxury travel to just one trip? If you're planning a honeymoon or dreaming about a do-over, this episode is a must-listen! Tune in now and start planning your dream trip for less! Reliving Lambeau Memories - A Vikings Fan's Tales from Packers Week — In this special Packers Week episode of 'Skoldiers & Spice,' Sal Spice dives into her memorable experiences at Lambeau Field while supporting the Minnesota Vikings. Starting with an introduction that sets the tone for Packers Week, Sal details the crazy, unique, and fun experiences she's encountered over her years as a passionate Vikings fan. She shares stories from her four trips to Lambeau Field, touching on everything from game-day excitement to personal relationships. Sal recounts her first visit in 2014, marred by rain and a tough loss, yet highlighted by amazing 50-yard-line seats gifted by an ex-boyfriend. This trip was particularly memorable due to the controversy surrounding her taking another man with those tickets, ultimately leading to an awkward yet solo adventure. She continues to narrate the dramatic stories of her 2015 season, including dating a Packers fan, attending a high-stakes division-deciding game, and the emotional rollercoaster that followed. The episode also explores Sal's mixed feelings about Packers fans and candid thoughts on Vikings season ticket holders who sell their tickets to rival fans. An unexpected text from her ex recalls vividly suppressed memories, adding a twist to the narrative. This episode is a heartfelt mix of nostalgia, rivalry, and personal growth, with Sal highlighting the passion and emotions tied to being a Vikings fan while humorously reflecting on past relationships and football fandom complexities. She ends the episode with a confident prediction for the upcoming game, encouraging feedback from her listeners, and promising more story-time episodes during the offseason or less busy weeks. Welcome back!My first piece on Orville's experience in the 80s had good reader reception, many thanks to your support! This piece focuses on Orville's story in the 60s and 70s working on China. Orville Schell is the Director of Center on US-China Relations at the Asia Society. In this one, you will hear about Orville's grandfather who taught medicine in Changsha in late qing; his semi-activist mom; studying with John Fairbank at Harvard; drinking tea with Chiang Kai-shek in Taipei; locked in a cave by CCP officials on his first trip to China; and getting chased out of Indonesia by the Indonesian communists. It shines a light on a not-so-distant era. Not sure about you; I certainly hear many echoes with our time.Enjoy!Content- Changsha, Tahiti, and Taiwan- First trip to China and a wake-up call- Living in Taiwan, dreaming of Beijing- John Fairbank and Edgar Snow- ‘Ganyang America!' (‘Crush America' in Indonesian)About usThe Peking Hotel podcast and newsletter are bilingual online publications that take you down memory lane of recent history in China and narrate China's reality through the personal tales of China experts. We present subjective, opinionated, and coloured views of veterans in the field based on their first-hand experience and direct observations. The project grew out of Leo's research at Hoover Institution where he collects long oral history of China experts living in America. The stories here are a reminder of what China used to be and what it is capable of becoming. We have Substacks in English and Chinese. This week's Free story comes from the Sparkle Car Collection. It's called "Our First Trip Together." Listen Now! Included in this episode is an original Martin and Sylvia story called “A Visit from Uncle Phil”: In this story, Daddy's adventuring friend Phil comes to visit for the weekend. And a visit from “Uncle Phil” means a whole lot of fun. Brother and sister have great ideas about what they'd each like to do, but they can't seem to agree. When Uncle Phil arrives, he challenges them to find something they can all do together! With a little story magic from Uncle Phil, sibling harmony is found once again. Also included: “The Bremen Town Musicians”, a story collected by the Brother's Grimm and “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”, a story from Norway. Woven between the stories are some long “staircase” verses that everyone can join in, as well as some fun and original car games. If you enjoyed that story, there are hundreds and hundreds more where that came from. Try a Sparkle subscription now - for free.
