With all eight episodes now unpacked, Producer Sean at last weighs in as we bid farewell to The Witcher's latest season. To borrow from our favorite bard, season three is full of “extraordinary things” and we offer our final thoughts on all of them, from the wonderful found family Geralt builds with Yen and Ciri, to Jaskier's tantalizing relationship with Radovid, to the breathtaking battle at Aretuza. But the most remarkable thing of all may just be that Producer Sean picks a Canadian whisky to accompany our discussion—Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye. We doubt even Dijkstra would have been able to see that one coming!

Tasting Notes:  This 100% Canadian rye is unique in that it's produced at the Pernod/Canadian Club distillery in Windsor on Vendome copper pot stills. Canadian whisky portfolios haven't gotten a lot of love lately from their owners, except a little bit here and there by Beam, but that just means it's a truly underappreciated and underpriced category with some awesome whiskies worthy of attention. Forty Creek, Alberta Premium, Crown Special Reserve, and Lot 40 have to be on the top of any list. Highly perfumed nose of mint, menthol, and camphor with touches of oak and vanilla. On the palate, soft minty butterscotch, apple skins, and hints of Calvados with a long spicy finish.

Tasting Notes:  Pure whiskey candy! This 100% rye from Alberta Distillers has long been available up north, but only in recent years has it made its way to the US. It's one of those truly under the radar greats that people tend to try once, really like it, then flee back to known waters. I would suggest returning to this bottle as a regular lineup item. It's just so rich, flavorful, balanced, and truly one of the WORLD'S GREAT WHISKIES. Aged approximately 5 years and bottled at 127 proof, the nose starts off with sweet mint, vanilla, toffee, milk chocolate, and fresh-cut oak. So much FRESHNESS from the minty rye, you have to keep going back for more. The palate is as crisp and rye-focused as anything you'll ever taste. Rye at this proof and this mash bill turns into fresh, herbal, mint-inflected rock candy. Top that off with creamy toffee and some more vanilla.

Raj Peter Bhakta, the founder of WhistlePig and now Bhakta Farms, has left the world of rye whiskey and entered into the world of rare Armagnac brandy. Raj just introduced BHAKTA 50, a marriage of Argmanac’s he discovered with Vintages from 1868 - 1970. And he’s gone a step further  and finished it in Islay casks. A complex spirit that is ideal for the curious  whiskey lover. Sweet and smoky but not overly so, this finishing process for 50+ year old Armagnac is unlike anything else.  Raj had us all on our toes for this episode and we were excited to explore something so rare and unique.  And don’t miss the teaser for Raj’s next big project; his whiskey project, called Empire, a “global whiskey” coming out next year (2021). His success in rye established the category during a time when the industry overlooked it. Now, with BHAKTA, he is reviving another spirit: ancient Armagnac brandy, bottled stateside in Vermont. Bhakta is a first generation American. Both of his parents are immigrants. Born in 1975 to a Gujarati father and an Irish mother, he grew up in the Philadelphia area and attended the Hill School in Pottstown, PA before graduating Boston College in 1998. After beginning his career with investment banking firm Violy & Co, Bhakta departed to found Automovia, a valuation tech startup for pre-owned vehicles. He also worked for a time in the family business, leading a condominium development project in Vail, CO. While in Colorado in 2004, Bhakta scored a role on Trump’s nascent reality show The Apprentice, Season 2. His business prowess and theatrical antics helped him navigate, barter, and flirt to the ninth week before being fired by Trump. His charisma with women became fodder for gossip columns like New York Post’s Page Six, and his frequent wearing of bow ties was credited with a surge in the accessory’s popularity. In 2006, Bhakta ran for U.S. Congress from Pennsylvania’s 13th district. His campaign gained national notoriety due to his television background and playboy reputation. In October, Bhakta protested US-Mexican border weakness by riding an elephant along the Rio Grande with a 6-man mariachi band. This garnered even more publicity, and by the end of his unsuccessful campaign, Bhakta appeared on MSNBC, CNN’s Crossfire, and Fox News. After his defeat in 2007, Bhakta moved from Manhattan to seek green fields. He purchased a decrepit Vermont dairy farm and began searching for obscure spirits to market under his new brand WhistlePig. Acquiring stocks from Canadian distiller Alberta Premium, Bhakta partnered with master distiller Dave Pickerel and began bottling his 10-year rye in 2010. Praised nationwide, WhistlePig put rye back on the map and grew to America’s premier luxury whiskey in just a few years. After selling in 2019, Bhakta began a crusade for the world’s finest spirits. On this journey, Bhakta stumbled on a stock of rare and exquisite Armagnacs in a Gers chateau. Distilled 1868-1970, the portfolio contains enough to bottle blends well over 50 years old. The vintages also predate Armagnac history’s largest crisis, the Great French Wine Blight, which devastated vineyards and changed grape varietals forever. The oldest brandies use only original cultivars, making them perhaps the only genuine Armagnacs left in existence. Bhakta, immediately enamored, negotiated a hefty purchase and brought them back home to Vermont. With these assets, Bhakta is set to outdo his former ventures. BHAKTA 50 Year Brandy is older than any whiskey available and steeped in generations of small-scale craft. It also gets a unique Islay cask finish: the perfect marriage of brandy and Scotch. Bhakta has even put his own name on the bottle, showing just how proud he is of this magnum opus. BHAKTA offers a singular experience: brandy for the whiskey-lover. Just like he returned rye to the national spotlight, he’s now found a niche new spirit with its own distinct category. Bhakta Brandy has just launched this 4th of July. Barrel 1 contains vintages 50-152 years old, with more released one-by-one this year. With only 38 total barrels, the $250 price tag seems impossible. As more barrels launch, demand will swiftly outpace his vanishing supply to create a fast-appreciating asset. Recall Bhakta’s BossHog Line and WhistlePig 111, which began at $111 and now sells for upwards of $2,300. For followers of these previous ventures, the upward potential in Bhakta’s liquid investment is easily tenable. The rest will have to taste and find out themselves if his unique brandy is worth the acclaim. photo credit: Bhakta Farms / Bhakta Spirits

This week, we'll take a tour of a distillery very few people ever get to visit, Beam's Alberta Distillers facility in Calgary, Alberta. 80% of the distillery's whisky is sold in bulk to clients around the world, which means if you've tried all but a few Canadian whiskies, the chances are pretty good Rick Murphy and his team had something to do with them.  The remaining 20% is bottled under the Alberta Premium and Alberta Springs labels for the Canadian market, along with the Tangle Ridge label available in the US and a few other markets. The distillery is on the edge of the Canadian Rockies, which means high altitude, low humidity, and lots of cold and snow. One of their innovations is a unique "straddle loader" to move barrels of whisky around without the risk of using a forklift in extreme weather. In the news...still no arrests in the Pappy Van Winkle theft, Diageo opens a new Scotch whisky warehousing complex in Fife, and Jim Murray names his whisky of the year for the 2014 Whisky Bible.

Maybe it is the nature of the business in BC or maybe it’s just that there are millions and millions of choices for you to spend your Whisky dollar on and the law of averages eventually takes over. What I mean by this is if there are 600 choices of Canadian Whiskys, the chances are not good that the best bang for the buck will necessarily be the leading, heavily advertised brands. I think this plays out beautifully in the most recent edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. In the Bible there are 371 pages of reviews of whisky’s from around the world. In the forward the author notes that he tasted over 4500 whisky’s over the year, although I’m certain this is how many he reviewed in this years bible. Of the presumably 4500 whiskys reviewed a mere 250 are scored 94 out of 100 or higher. I was very surprised to see a number of the luminary whisky’s getting an average to under no circumstances let this pass your lips. But what really gets me going are the whiskys that are wall flowers in our consciousness but are highly rated by Mr. Murray. A perfect example of this is the Alberta Premium Rye. Sits on the shelf for $23.99, which is lowest price for a bottle 750ml spirit in BC, which is a whole bunch cheaper than items like Crown Royal, Wiser’s Deluxe, Forty Barrel Creek, etc. It is Canada’s only Rye that is 100% Rye but it is entombed in a bottle and package that screams beige.  I remember being at a tasting with Jim Murray when exclaimed that the Alberta Premium Rye is a true statement not just about whisky but about Canadians as well. We love to understate ourselves. We apologize for being outstanding (except when it comes to hockey). It seems very difficult for us to believe that our own products are superior to those that are imported. With all this in mind here is an excerpt of what Mr. Murray, heck let’s call him Jim as he seems to like us Canadians... “throbbing pulsing rye on a variety of levels: full and juicy, dull and dusty,  firm and flinty. Unique and unmistakeable.” He goes on to describe his encounter, here on Vancouver Island, with the whisky, a robin some finches, an Arbutus Tree and the “chilly spring air”. Then he gets into the essence of his review “...like the robin and finches from the Arbutus, true to nature: it is a true rye whisky, not a misnomer like the rest. The 100% Rye grain used, fortified in its mouth watering  delivery by the usage of a degree  of malted rye offers flavours unlimited. Alberta Premium is no longer  just a great Canadian Whisky. It has become a national treasure.” SCORE: 95.5 out of 100 WOW – high praise indeed. I have to say that this is my Canadian Whisky of choice as well. First because of the price and that means I can make more people happier at a lower price- an economist will tell you that this is the definition of true wealth.  You can be a hipster and create a funky cocktail or just have it with a dash of water, or you can mix with with 7Up, Coke or Ginger Ale. Our job in the stores is to help people find the best product for their needs for the best price. We are often suggesting lower price items if people are simply going to mix with a glass full of Coke or Juice, and will suggest something else if the spirit needs to stand on its own merits. When it comes to Canadian Whisky the products are one and the same. My recommendation is buy and share.

Canadians take pride in their whisky, but one very special whisky often goes overlooked on store shelves.
