Join hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter on another episode of The Bourbon Road podcast, recorded live from the Corner Rick House in Frankfort, Kentucky. They are joined by a special returning guest and friend of the show, Diane Strong, for an exclusive preview of the highly anticipated 2025 Bourbon on the Banks Festival. Diane gives listeners the ultimate insider's guide to the festival, taking place on Saturday, October 4, 2025. She reveals this year's title sponsor is the local and historic Benson Valley Bourbon. Get ready for an unforgettable, free afterparty at the farmers' market, featuring a full bar, food, a cigar lounge, and an incredible musical lineup with local favorites Creek Water opening for headliner Noah Thompson, the 2022 winner of American Idol. Diane also details the full schedule of events leading up to the main festival, including a Thursday mixology class, the kickoff party at Whiskey Thief, the Friday VIP event celebrating Women in Bourbon, and a special bourbon pairing lesson, "The Stave is the Rage," with the world-renowned Peggy Noe Stevens. The highlight of the episode is a special tasting of four of the twelve exclusive single barrel selections that will be available for purchase at the festival. These unique barrels were hand-selected by the Bourbon on the Banks team and will be prominently marked by 7-foot flags at the distilleries' tents. The expressions tasted on the show include: Angel's Envy Port Finish Single Barrel Pick: The tasting kicks off with this crowd-pleasing pour. The hosts discover inviting notes of campfire, overripe berries, and dark vanilla on the nose. The palate is savory and rich, carrying over those ripe berry notes from the fortified wine finish, making it a perfect pairing for a fine cigar. Casey Jones Distillery Single Barrel Rye: This selection comes with a great story—the picking team was tied, so they let the distillery make the final choice on this fantastic rye. It's described as a "bourbon drinker's rye" that surprised the panel during the blind selection. It features a complex nose of tobacco, mint chocolate, and honey, with a palate that delivers notes of candied orange and caramel apple. Bespoken Spirits 12-Year Single Barrel: A truly unique offering, this 12-year-old Barton-sourced bourbon is finished in Riesling wine barrels. It immediately impresses with a rich, aged nose of mature oak and concentrated fruit. The hosts praise it as an "exceptional whiskey," with a massively concentrated flavor profile that makes it a perfect special-occasion nightcap. Short Barrel 8-Year Single Barrel Bourbon: The tasting concludes with this powerhouse, an 8-year-old bourbon distilled at the former OZ Tyler distillery (now Green River) and bottled at a staggering 135.7 proof. Despite the high proof, it offers a beautifully complex palate with notes of milk chocolate, chewy cherry, burnt caramel, nougat, and a hint of sandalwood. Tune in for incredible stories, detailed tasting notes, and your complete guide to one of Kentucky's premier bourbon festivals. For those who want to attend, Diane urges listeners to act fast, as tickets for many events are limited or already sold out. Fort Hamilton Distillery is located in Brooklyn, New York and was founded in 2016 by Alex Clark and his wife Amy Grindeland. We caught up with this dynamic duo during our recent trip to the Hoochenanny Whiskey and Music festival. Fort Hamilton strives to make an array of spirits, but the brand was founded on the premise of creating authentic New York style rye that was popular before prohibition. In this episode, you will get to hear our interview with Alex that took place at the festival and you will also get to here our opinion of their rye whiskey once we arrived back in Kentucky and revisited it. We've never done an episode like this for the podcast and you won't want to miss it. Alex is a fascinating individual and he brings an unparalleled energy to whiskey making and his brand. We had very limited experience with Fort Hamilton before visiting NY. If you aren't familiar with Fort Hamilton, we promise you will know about them very soon because they are doing some amazing things. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

At RD1 Spirits' gleaming new distillery in Lexington, the answer is nothing short of revolutionary. Barry Brinegar and Dr. Jared Gollihue are writing bourbon's next chapter through methodical wood experimentation that transforms traditional Kentucky whiskey into something extraordinary. Their journey from honoring the William Tarr legacy to pioneering innovative finishing techniques demonstrates the untapped potential still waiting to be discovered in America's native spirit. The scientific precision behind RD1's approach is fascinating. Dr. Gollihue, with his PhD in wood maturation, doesn't just randomly add wood to barrels – he calculates precise ratios, documents every variable, and maintains 50+ test barrels simultaneously. When he explains why whiskey needs time to "recalculate" after blending or why flavor chemistry doesn't scale linearly, you realize this is bourbon-making at its most thoughtful. The tasting room offers an unparalleled experience where visitors can sample experimental barrels that showcase woods from around the world – Mizunara oak, sweet cherry, French oak, and even maple wood smoked on bourbon barrel staves. Their Sister Cities release brilliantly combines bourbon and rye with French and Japanese oak influences, honoring Lexington's international connections while creating a wholly unique whiskey expression. As an anchor tenant in Lexington's emerging entertainment district at The Commons, RD1 is positioned at the center of a bourbon tourism destination that will soon feature pickleball courts, axe throwing, and an amphitheater. This blend of innovation, accessibility, and Kentucky heritage makes RD1 a must-visit for anyone wondering what more Kentucky bourbon can do.Come taste the future of bourbon where science meets art – no lab coat required, but an adventurous palate is highly recommended. In this episode of The Bourbon Road, Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter return for Part Two of their deep dive into Lost Lantern's 2025 Summer Collection — and this time, it's all about the rye. The duo tastes through a curated lineup of four standout rye whiskeys, plus a bonus pour, delivering flavor notes, backstories, and some playful banter along the way. The tasting kicks off with Far North Spirits from Minnesota, a 4-year-old rye clocking in at 111.5 proof. It impresses with grain-forward notes, minty freshness, and a candy-like sweetness that evolves into a spicy finish — evoking everything from Melba toast to black licorice jellybeans. Next is the return of Fray Ranch from Nevada with a 6-year, 118.6-proof rye that blows both hosts away. With tasting notes of mint chocolate chip, brandy-like fruit, and a chocolate-dipped finish, it emerges as a strong contender for favorite pour of the episode. Colby and the Fray Ranch team continue to prove why their farm-to-glass model is producing truly unique and exceptional whiskey. The episode is peppered with exciting bourbon news, including: The upcoming release of Heaven Hill's Grain to Glass Kentucky Straight Rye (Batch 2) The return of Elijah Craig and Larceny barrel-proof expressions Jacob's Pardon Collective Series — a 16-year-old whiskey finished in 50-year-old Oloroso sherry casks Upcoming limited releases from Old Forester, Chattanooga Whiskey, Boone County, and New Riff As always, Jim and Todd keep it real, sharing not just tasting notes but honest opinions about value, availability, and flavor. They also highlight Lost Lantern's growing influence in the craft whiskey space, with recurring praise for past favorites like Whiskey Acres. Whether you're a seasoned rye lover or a curious newcomer, this episode is packed with flavor, insight, and plenty of road-tested recommendations. Laws Whiskey House is located in Denver, Colorado and it is the official whiskey of the University of Colorado. Even though this brand has been around for quite some time, most of us are not super experienced with it. In fact, we all remember seeing some their A.D. Laws Four Grain Bourbon on the shelves, but none of us tried it. Fast forward to this weeks episode. We were able to get our hands a 10.5 year hazmat single barrel rye from Laws that was picked by a local barrel group (Hooch Barrel Club). Will be impressed? Maybe? Will you be entertained? Absolutely. Join us this week as we taste and review this hazmat rye bottle and some other offerings from Laws. We are again joined by our friend JD from the Bourbon Hunters and there are many laughs that were had.--------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
Send us a textIt's been a privilege, an honor, and an immense joy to have Eric as my cohost over the past 4 years and over 190 episodes of the podcast. All things end eventually, but this one certainly hurts a lot. On this episode, though, we send our Whiskey Mutant off into the sunset with one of his favorite whiskeys and we talk about how wonderful his time on the show has been. We also talk a bit about what's next and what you can expect from TIMBP moving forward. I'm not going anywhere, and I hope you aren't either.I love y'all. Thanks for everything. This episode of the Bourbon Road podcast features Jim Shannon (traveling in Denver, Colorado) interviewing Al Laws of Laws Whiskey House. Laws shares the history and philosophy behind his Denver-based distillery, emphasizing their grain-to-glass approach using heirloom Colorado grains like Centennial white wheat and San Luis Valley rye. He discusses the mash bill of their flagship Four Grain Bourbon (60% corn, 20% wheat, 10% rye, 10% malt) and the specific flavor contributions of each grain, including the unique "penny metallic bite" from the rye and nutty finish from the scarlet barley. Laws explains how they adjusted their cooking technique to achieve balance in the Four Grain Bourbon and credits his mentor, Bill Friel, a veteran distiller from Bardstown, Kentucky. Laws recounts his personal journey from oil and gas finance in Canada to pursuing his obsession with American whiskey, driven by a desire for hands-on artistry and authenticity. He highlights the historical significance of the Bottle in Bond Act as the first U.S. consumer protection law and Laws Whiskey House's pioneering role as the first Bottled-in-Bond whiskey in Colorado. The conversation also delves into their 100% Rye Whiskey, exploring the earthy notes derived from the soil where the grain is grown at high altitude in the San Luis Valley. They taste a Cognac Cask Finished Bourbon, discussing the process of layering in different aged bourbons into French oak casks and a large 1600-gallon foeder for integration, resulting in a richer, more integrated flavor over years. This Solera-style finished bourbon is a special, limited annual release. They also try a high-proof, high-wheat blend called "Super Wheater," noting its intense flavor and how water or ice can open it up. Laws describes the unique distillery visit experience, featuring a "Whiskey Church" for educational tastings and a "Whiskey Sanctuary" tasting room with panoramic mountain views. He emphasizes the importance of their team, calling the distillery a "village". They discuss distribution, noting availability in about 15-16 states, with Illinois being a strong market, and the best way to purchase is often directly online or at the distillery. Old Fashioned Football Podcast hosts J Mark and Merr sit down with Dan Oskey, the co-founder of Tattersall Whiskey, for an insightful discussion about the origins, processes, and philosophies behind one of Minnesota and Wisconsin's distinguished distilleries. The conversation covers everything from the unique flavors of Tattersall Distillery's offerings to the sustainability efforts in the new River Falls facility. For those who appreciate the craft of whiskey, this episode is a deep dive into how passion and innovation can harmonize to create exceptional spirits.A Deep Dive into Tattersall WhiskeyThe episode kicks off with an introduction to the unique Tattersall distillery whiskey varieties. Focused particularly on the Minnesota Rye. Dan shares that their rye uses 85% rye grain and 15% malted rye. This is entirely crafted from local Minnesota ingredients. He explains the flavor profile to the hosts. This includes black pepper spice and subtle cocoa bean notes that characterize their rye, making it perfect for cocktails or a neat sip.Tattersall's philosophy centers around using locally sourced grains. This includes rye and other key ingredients to enhance the complexity and authenticity of their products."We have a great soil and climate here," Dan notes, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and local farming partnerships, such as their long-standing collaboration with Dale Anderson of Cambridge, Minnesota.A Journey to DistillationDan told Old-Fashioned Football about his journey to establishing Tattersall. He reflects on his early years as a bartender, where he developed a passion for crafting every element behind the bar. His transition to distilling was sparked by a childhood friend's proposal to create something more than just cocktails — to distill the spirits themselves. For Dan, distilling was a natural progression. After bartending and creating small-batch bitters and sodas, the idea to open a distillery allowed him to bring everything full circle. He recounts the reunion with Jon Keidler, a childhood friend turned business partner. Jon came to dinner at his restaurant and proposed the idea of starting the distillery together. Jon, with his investment background, had a business plan ready, and Dan's expertise in flavor and distillation made them the perfect team.Tattersall's New Home: River FallsOne of the most exciting advancements for Tattersall is their move to River Falls, Wisconsin. As Dan and the team sought to expand and optimize operations, they settled in a repurposed former Shopko building. This new facility is not just larger but also beams with sustainability efforts. This includes the largest solar array of any distillery in the country, water reclamation systems, and zero waste operations.Dan proudly describes the facility as perhaps the greenest distillery in America. Tattersall's commitment to sustainability is enhanced by its involvement in the White Oak Initiative. This is an effort to plant American white oaks necessary for future barrel production.Exploring the Tattersall Product LineThe conversation also ventures into Tattersall's diverse product offerings. This includes unique launches like their toasted coconut avi, lauded for its innovative combination of botanical ingredients. There's something for everyone at Tattersall, including their award-winning absinthe and canned cocktails.Dan explains how Tattersall approaches canning by lowering alcohol content for more refreshing, sessionable drinks. This includes their blueberry basil vodka collins, which has become a popular favorite. Though the whiskey peach tea didn't find its footing in the initial launch, it remains a hidden gem beloved by its loyal fans.An Invitation to VisitTattersall doesn't just want people to buy their products—they want to welcome them to the distillery itself. With events ranging from free mini margaritas on Cinco de Mayo to broader public tours, Tattersall ensures a visit is worth every minute. The distillery offers tastings of their complete product line. Their unique design features a tasting bar and dining area, emphasizing their mission of offering hospitality through flavor and experience.ConclusionWhether you're a whiskey enthusiast, a curious spirit aficionado, or someone just discovering the depth of craft distillation, the story of Tattersall Whiskey is one of passion, precision, and progress. Their varieties offer complex tasting notes. Nurtured through sustainable practices and local sourcing—truly embodying the notion that flavor is hospitality.Head to River Falls for an experience of a lifetime, or explore their offerings via their website. Inspired by the rallying cry for a war history has often forgotten, Remember the Maine is a drink that wears its patriotism on its sleeve, and its vermouth and cherry component with pride. At first glance, it reads like a Manhattan with flair: rye, sweet vermouth, cherry Heering, and a rinse of absinthe. But follow its trail and you'll find a drink that likely evolved from another historical oddity. Helping us navigate its complicated history and composition is Joel Lee Kulp, owner and general manager of Brooklyn's The Richardson. Send us a textWe're taking a break from the interviews this week to catch up on a couple of reviews, even though we're still checking in with some products sent to us by our friends from last week's episode! Crossroads Bourbon and Special Reserve Bourbon, both from Blue Note, are two well-refined and finely crafted products that satisfy consumers on both ends of the their wallet, while still giving them the opportunity to celebrate the incredible ability of bourbon to be both flexible and familiar, at the same time. We give it the ol' TIMBP review treatment before diving into a bit of a lengthy discussion on the state of Booker's Bourbon in 2025 and how it could go south quickly. Plus, we give our thoughts on Dragon Ball Daima during Tips 'n' Bits. Send us a textTo say that Joe Beatrice is seasoned would be doing the veteran spirits industrialist a disservice. His brand of blended beverages has always delivered drinkers with a diverse array of offerings sure to both please and surprise those who are not willing to limit themselves to their Jack & Cokes or Miller Lites. Should you be choose to accept the mission of adventure into exotic finishes and interstate blends, the options at your fingertips may present themselves as limitless. Does Joe find them as such? Perhaps, unless two podcasters criticize his methods and wonder if they could have been altered, meritless or otherwise. On today's episode of This is my Bourbon Podcast, Joe Beatrice is welcomed back to celebrate and elaborate on all things Barrell while giving us the chance to pick his brain on what makes barrels tick.
