This week's episode comes from the Victoria Whisky Festival in Victoria, British Columbia...where a small Vancouver distillery shocked the Canadian whisky world the other night. Sons of Vancouver won Canadian Whisky of the Year honors at the Canadian Whisky Awards with their "Palm Trees and a Tropical Breeze" rye whisky. It was the highest-scoring whisky in the competition, and it wasn't even close. We'll talk with the distillery's Jenna Diubaldo, James Lester, and Max Smith on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth, along with Canadian Whisky Awards founder and chairman Davin de Kergommeaux. In the news, an explosion rocked Alberta Distillers in Calgary this week, while a long-running legal saga has come to an end in Vancouver.

On this episode of THE COCKTAIL GURU PODCAST, Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, bar owner and restaurateur, acclaimed drinks historian and author, and a globally recognized authority on Tiki culture, tells hosts Jonathan & Jeffrey Pogash the technicolor tale of how the Los Angeles native went from writing for the screen in Hollywood to becoming the North Star of the tropical cocktail galaxy and slinging drinks in New Orleans. Brought to you by Plantation Rum, Denizen Rum, and J.P. Wiser's Canadian Whisky. THE COCKTAIL GURU PODCAST is produced by 1st Reel Entertainment and distributed by EatsDrinksTV, a service of the Center for Culinary Culture—Home of The Cocktail Collection, and is available wherever fine podcasts can be heard. The Center for Culinary Culture—Telling the Story of Food & Drink…One Taste at a Time. GUEST BIO One of Imbibe's “25 Most Influential Cocktail Personalities of the Past Century,” Jeff “Beachbum” Berry is the author of seven books on vintage tropical drinks, which published for the first time anywhere the lost recipes of Tiki's golden age—from the original Zombie, Jet Pilot, and Pearl Diver to the Navy Grog, Saturn, Three Dots & A Dash, and many others. Esquire calls Jeff “one of the instigators of the cocktail revolution” and Food & Wine “one of the world's leading rum experts,” while The New York Times cites him as “the Indiana Jones of Tiki drinks” and The Los Angeles Times as “A hybrid of street-smart gumshoe, anthropologist, and mixologist.” Jeff's been featured on the Travel Channel's “Food Paradise” TV series, The Discovery Channel, PBS Television, and National Public Radio; he's also been profiled in The Washington Post, USA Today, The New York Times, and Wine Enthusiast. Jeff's original cocktail recipes have been printed in publications around the world, from Bon Appétit and The Huffington Post to over 20 international recipe books, including the venerable Mr. Boston Official Bartender's Guide. And now Jeff's drinks are being served at his restaurant in New Orleans, Beachbum Berry's Latitude 29, which has won critical acclaim in Esquire, Playboy, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Houston Chronicle, GQ, Travel + Leisure, Town & Country, Southern Living, New Orleans, and the Food Network. With Martin Doudoroff, Jeff co-created Total Tiki for iPad and iPhone, a drink recipe app which Macworld calls “beautifully rendered and, thanks to Berry's tireless reporting, impeccably sourced.” Jeff's also co-created a line of Tiki barware with Cocktail Kingdom, which Imbibehails as “especially notable because it revives old styles of essential glassware that were previously almost impossible to find.” While this is all way too much work for a bum, Jeff also contributed 29 entries to The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails and lectures about tropical drinks across the US, Europe, and Latin America. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecocktailgurupodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecocktailgurupodcast/support

85 years ago today, the five Shapira brothers and their partners opened Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. The Shapira family is still in charge today, with second-generation company president Max Shapira leading the company. We'll talk with Max about Bourbon then and now, including the company's recent expansion into Canadian Whisky with last year's purchase of Black Velvet and its distillery in Lethbridge, Alberta. In the news, the clock is ticking more loudly as the deadline gets closer for Congress to extend a critical federal tax break for small-scale distillers, and we'll talk with one distiller who says the damage may already have been done. There's also hope that a move in London might help ease some of the trade tensions affecting the whisky industry, while new data shows a significant decline in alcohol sales worldwide this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. We'll have the rest of the week's news and much more on this week's WhiskyCast!

On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show, Monster Jam driver Cynthia Gauthier drops in from Canada to join Fred in some lively banter and whiskey sipping. Along the way, they talk ice fishing, driving in traffic without the benefit of a Monster Truck, the intentional craziness of the motor sport, Titan Games, healing from the sport and more. Fred, of course, loves to enjoy Monster Jam with his sons, so having Gauthier on the show was a can't-miss proposition. Whiskys tasted: Shelter Point Lot 40 (14:11) Forty Creek Barrel Select (17:28) Stock and Barrel Rye (20:03) Shelter Point Smoke Point (27:27) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Cynthia talk about a number of topics, such as: Fred extols the virtues of Canadian whisky and discusses the difference between it and American whiskey. Cynthia reveals she took a bartending class when she was younger and that she likes to enjoy many different types of spirits - focusing on whiskey when she isn't feeling well. She does clarify, however, she doesn't really drink while on the road with Monster Jam, choosing to focus on her health. Gauthier notes that part of not drinking when touring with the sport is because, obviously, drinking and driving don't mix. To which Fred quips, "You said in your profession it's hard to drink a lot; in my profession, it's hard to drive a lot." In addition to ice fishing, Cynthia likes plenty of other outdoor activities, including paddle boarding and longboarding. The two make their way through Canadian whiskeys and when they hit the 92-proof Stock and Barrel Rye, Cynthia says, "This will take paint off your wall." (It's fair to note the interview and tasting happened at 10 a.m., so perhaps her palate was still waking up.) A self-described adrenaline junkie, Cynthia admits how much she appreciates being able to compete in Monster Jam along with a number of other women in the sport. She says her passion for motor sports originates with her dad, who is a mechanic. While she studied to be a CPA, she actually became a welder and started her own welding business. Cynthia ultimately picks Shelter Point Lot 40 as her favorite of the flight. QUOTABLES Cynthia Gauthier compares Monster Jam to a UFC fight - it's about the action. "It's the only sport that we're actually crashing on purpose. Other sports, they always want to finish first, but we want the wild moments and so we actually sometimes go out of control to get that, that special moment where you get on one wheel and then come back on four. It's a special sport." This week, we're in Fredericton, New Brunswick for the 24th annual New Brunswick Spirits Festival! We'll talk with one of the leading lights in Canadian Whisky, Canadian Club's Tish Harcus, on WhiskyCast In-Depth. She's in her 32nd year at Canadian Club, and plays multiple roles for the brand from serving as its global ambassador to maintaining 161 years of CC archives and helping lead new product development. For instance, the new Chronicles 42-year-old whisky and the entire Chronicles series came from her insistence on finding a special home for some vintage barrels instead of just blending them away. She's also one of the founders of Women Who Whiskey, and has been a role model and mentor for many of her colleagues industry-wide. In the news, a short-term spending agreement in Washington this week headed off a government shutdown that could have caused problems for whisky makers, while there's still no progress on extending a federal excise tax break for small-scale distillers that expires at midnight on New Year's Eve. We'll have details on the week's new whisky releases, and on Behind the Label, we'll find out how a small-town whisky bar went high-tech to help its customers pick their whiskies.

Forty Creek Whisky founder John K. Hall has kept a low profile since selling his distillery to Campari five years ago. He won dozens of awards for his whiskies at Forty Creek, and turned his startup into one of the best-selling Canadian whiskies around - earning him a place in Canadian Whisky history. Hall returned to the 2019 Victoria Whisky Festival for the first time since the sale to serve as the keynote speaker for the Canadian Whisky Awards dinner. In an exclusive interview with WhiskyCast's Mark Gillespie, he shared his thoughts on today's whisky business and whether he may make a comeback once his non-compete agreement with Campari expires later this year.

With the ongoing trade dispute between the US and Canada, it's important to keep in mind that Canadian Whisky remains extremely popular in the US. Crown Royal has released the latest edition in its Noble Collection series - a 13-year-old "Blender's Mash" using one of the five different styles of whisky Crown Royal makes at its distillery in Gimli, Manitoba. They call it a different name at the distillery, though...and when they tried to use that "Bourbon Mash" name in the US...let's just say it didn't go quite as planned.
