Bourbon Pursuit and Pursuit Spirits Enter the Whiskey Ring What do you ask when your guests have over 1,000 podcast episodes over three shows and 10 years? That was my task this week - let me know how I did! My guests are Kenny Coleman and Ryan Cecil, hosts of the Bourbon Pursuit podcast and founders of Pursuit Spirits, an NDP grown out of their love of bourbon and rye and, in my mind, the dream that many of us on this side of the mic think about in our wildest fantasies. The first thing, though is simple: with a full-time business (opening a new, second physical location and eventually aiming for 50,000 6-pack cases per year), three shows, and full-time jobs, how do they manage their time? How do you keep all the plates in the air? How do you take a piss-in-your-cheerios type like Kenny and keep the momentum up through challenges? If you're a long-time listener of Bourbon Pursuit, Behind the Pursuit, and Whiskey Quickies, you'll know most of their story, and I didn't want to reinvent the wheel. Instead, we dove into their business model, the changes in drinking habits over 10 years of podcasting and running a whiskey business, and how once in awhile their wives will still hold it over them that it was the wives who introduced the two guys all that time ago. There are also deeper questions. We keep hearing brands have to own their backyard before growing further, but there's an asterisk: unless you live in Kentucky, where you simply can't own your backyard. How do you create a subscription model that incentivizes people to stay with you without overwhelming or outpricing them? And finally, there's a new question adapted from *nerdiness alert* The History of Egypt Podcast: if there was one thing in whiskey that is currently unknown or uncertain and you could know or be sure, what would it be? The answer might surprise you - it certainly surprised me! Thank you to Kenny and Ryan for entering the Whiskey Ring! An OG New York Distiller - But You May Know Them From Elsewhere Finger Lakes Distilling is one of the oldest distilleries in New York, having started in 2007. They're part of the Empire Rye collaborative, and are producing whiskies, brandies, vodka, and a soju spirit. But you probably know them for a serendipitous partnership: Pursuit Spirits, from Kenny and Ryan at Bourbon Pursuit, who used Finger Lakes Distilling bourbon and rye in their single barrels and, later, their blends. Finger Lakes - also going by FLX - is a component in Barrell blends, too, but that's not for the parties to say (no NDA for me!). I'm joined by Brian McKenzie, founder and the original distiller. When they started, there were no manuals, few people they could talk to to figure out how to distill, but they did it - and now, they pass that knowledge on to new distillers. There's no greater legacy than that. Thank you to Brian for entering the Whiskey Ring! It's the 500th episode of Bourbon Pursuit! However, this isn't lighthearted and fun because we disucss the impact of tariffs on bourbon. The episode features a pre-recorded interview with Congressman Morgan McGarvey, wherein he shares insights on the political landscape of bourbon tariffs and their wider economic consequences. The discussion highlights bourbon's historical role in trade negotiations and the precarious situation for the industry, especially for smaller distilleries that may struggle to adapt. The short end of this is that consumers and producers alike need to come together in support of bourbon's vibrant culture. Show Notes: Congressman Morgan McGarvey's insights on tariffs affecting bourbon. Historical context of U.S.-Canada trade relations and its influence on bourbon sales. Discussion on the differing impacts of tariffs on large brands vs. craft distilleries. A call for unity and support within the bourbon community facing these challenges. Subscribe to Behind The Pursuit: From Bourbon to Brand In this episode of Behind the Pursuit we reflect on the past year, focusing on both growth and challenges. Kenny and Ryan delve into their goals for 2025, including the opening of our new downtown location, the importance of connecting with consumers, and the strategies for direct-to-consumer sales. The conversation also touches on the emotional rollercoaster of entrepreneurship, the challenges of marketing in the spirits industry, and the need for innovative approaches to stand out in a crowded market. We hit on: As we wind down 2024, what are some goals you are focusing on for 2025 and beyond? What are you thinking about doing in the downtown space to help people relate to the brand, and what is the breakdown of focus on Pursuit Spirits vs. Bourbon Pursuit? What are the pros and cons of focusing on a DTC distribution model? What does scale look like for something like that vs. the existing distribution model? Where have you found success in terms of marketing and how do you see that changing or staying the same in 2025? How do you navigate the importance of being involved as much as possible but hands off as much as possible for healthy growth? and much more. If you have followed the progress of this show since the beginning, you can see the evolution of what we talk about. In the beginning it was about brands and Master Distillers, then when we started Pursuit Spirits we were introduced into the world of brokers and the middle layer of people who own barrels without brands. That information has made its way to you and now you know more about the market. But that brokered market is heavily guarded. It's a series of handshakes, phone calls, and emails with excel spreadsheets with prices to see what's available. However, Rob Arnold with Barrel Hub is trying to make access easier for everyone. Rob isn't new to this game. He spent his undergraduate in Texas and is the person responsible for the pecan yeast strain used by TX Whiskey to this day. We talk about his background and how that led to the idea of creating a portal where industry folks can buy and sell barrels on the wholesale market. As a listener of Bourbon Pursuit, you already know more than the average bourbon consumer that walks the aisles. We get into tons of different discussions that surround the whiskey industry and you've heard us talk about barrels that aren't owned by distilleries but sit on the books of brokers or middle-men. With the explosion of bourbon over the past few years, the cost to acquire those barrels from brokers has sky rocketed, and whenever there is an opportunity to make money, more people get into the game. Today, there are millions of barrels aging in warehouses that don't belong to brands but are done as investments for anybody willing to take the risk. It's really no different than the stock market and for that reason we have Jeremy Kasler and Sara Havens from Cask X join the show. We talk about the business model and how anyone with the some spare money can put their dollars into barrels of whiskey as an alternative investment. We go through the legal ramifications and the unrealized benefits of being a CaskX customer. We also talk about the current market where we are seeing a decline in prices and if that means all good things come to an end or if the market is still strong and is a good place to think about future investments.
