Automating PCI v4.0.1 Script Monitoring: A 1-Year Field Report (ep. 8)

SecurityMetrics Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2026 29:35 Transcription Available

We can't keep turning a blind eye to e-commerce skimming. It's a real threat that demands real attention—regardless of how compliance checklists evolve. Eighteen months ago, our panel met to break down the rollout of PCI DSS requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1. Now, one year after PCI v4.0, we're looking at the data-backed reality of how these requirements are actually playing out in the field. With the recent industry transitions to PCI DSS v4.0.1, clarifications surrounding the boundaries between parent web pages and third-party iframes have created a dangerous side effect: "Checkbox Blindness." Many organizations are misinterpreting these adjustments to mean that script monitoring is effectively optional if a payment iframe is in place. But treating client-side security as a text-only compliance loophole ignores a harsh forensic reality—attackers don't care about scoping boundaries. In this follow-up episode, host Jen Stone sits down with a full house of SecurityMetrics experts—Gary Glover (VP of Assessment), Chad Horton (VP of Technology), and Aaron Willis (VP of Forensic Investigation)—to cut through the regulatory noise. Backed by data from over six years of payment page monitoring, they translate the latest auditor fine print into practical guidance on why your parent page remains a prime target, and how to protect it without drowning your team in alert fatigue.Key Takeaways From This Episode:The v4.0.1 Scoping Misconception: Why thinking an embedded iframe completely offloads your client-side security obligations is a critical business risk.Bypassing the Safe: How attackers manipulate the parent page environment to intercept credit card data before it ever reaches a secure iframe or redirect link. The Reality of "Checkbox Compliance": Why tracking down fourth- and fifth-party scripts matters to your baseline security, even if your SAQ criteria makes it look elective.Inside a "Zero-Malware" Exploit: A forensic breakdown of how threat actors turn legitimate, approved analytics scripts against online checkout flows.Managing the Responsibility Matrix: How to handle iframe providers who are quietly altering their security liability terms in their public documentation.Resources & Links Mentioned:Stop Checkbox Blindness: Automate your script inventory with SecurityMetrics Shopping Cart Monitor Get a Forensic MRI of Your Checkout: Schedule a deep-dive review with SecurityMetrics Shopping Cart Inspect Read the Research: Download the QSA White Paper on E-Commerce Skimmer Attacks Connect With Our Team:SecurityMetrics Website: securitymetrics.comFollow Us on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/securitymetricsA note from Jen: We built Practical Cybersecurity because we were tired of the fear-mongering in this industry. Security shouldn't be a secret club.If you're trying to figure out PCI compliance or need a pen test, my team at SecurityMetrics can help you out: https://www.securitymetrics.com/contact/lets-get-you-to-the-right-place But if you just want to learn how to protect yourself for free, start here:  https://academy.securitymetrics.com/

Foundations of Amateur Radio
Where is the spark .. gap?

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Foundations of Amateur Radio The thing I love most about this amazing hobby of amateur radio is the sheer size of the community and the depth of knowledge that comes with it. Case in point, the other day I mentioned the spark gap transmitter at Grimeton in Sweden. A few hours after releasing my comments into the void I received a message from Paul SA7CND who lives, wait for it, 153 km from the transmitter. He's been on-site while it was running, transmitting on 17.2 kHz. Paul pointed out that the Grimeton transmitter is not a spark gap transmitter at all. It's actually an Alexanderson alternator, an entirely different beast, and all the more interesting for it. Invented by Swedish electrical engineer and inventor, Ernst Frederick Werner Alexanderson, he received a patent for it in 1911 whilst working for General Electric. He died in 1975, aged 97 with 345 patents to his name. Before I dig in, because you know I will, the transmitter at Grimeton was officially opened on the 1st of December in 1924. Built to increase Swedish independence after World War I revealed its vulnerability to foreign controlled transatlantic telegraph cables. Serving as a telegraphy station capable of transmitting traffic across the Atlantic ocean the station was in regular service until 1996. Unlike its scrapped brethren, the Grimeton transmitter is currently operated several times a year as a functioning transmitter using the callsign SAQ. Announcements are made on the station mailing list and the website at grimeton.org, but generally on Alexanderson Day in July and Christmas Eve in December. You'll need to tune to 17.2 kHz, something you can do with a sound-card, or with an SDR. Sound-card you say? Yes. Not for audio, but for RF. Connect an antenna to the microphone centre-pin input and have at it. Note that this will likely be highly susceptible to noise, so filtering and experimentation are to be expected. There's several tools around to play with this, GNU Radio, Quisk, SuperSID and SAQrx. Also, there's plenty of other VLF, or Very Low Frequency stations to listen to. I should probably add this as a 51st thing to do with SDR, but I digress. Back to Grimeton. As the last remaining functional Alexanderson alternator transmitter, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. You can visit and see first hand what radio history looks like. As I said, if you pick your day, you can even watch it working. Failing that, there's plenty of YouTube videos showing the entire process, it's an absolute monster. There's even an amateur radio shack on-site with the callsign SK6SAQ. The website says that it's open sporadically, so I'd recommend you contact them before heading to Grimeton. I'll note that at the time that this station was being commissioned in 1924, it was already being superseded by valve oscillators, which brings me to how it works. Depending on where you live, you're likely familiar with the 50 or 60 Hz alternating current associated with household electricity. In 1891, Irish experimental physicist Frederick Thomas Trouton pointed out that if you could run an alternator at high enough speed it would create an alternating current at radio frequencies, said differently, creating a continuous wave at radio frequencies. Much experimentation followed and many giant shoulders supported this effort. It goes a little like this. Use an electric motor designed to spin at 900 revolutions per minute. Connect it to a gearbox. Connect that to a rotor with multiple poles. Then run the motor with a clutch to vary the speed. If that's not enough, to produce high power, the clearances between rotor and stator have to be kept to a millimetre. Then there is cooling and lubrication to consider, not to mention dealing with thermal expansion and contraction of a fast spinning and closely toleranced disk. At Grimeton, the whole transmitter weighs in at 50 tonnes, pretty much the opposite of portable operation. The rotor at Grimeton is a 1.6 meter diameter disc with a 7.5 cm thick edge with 488 slots milled into it, each filled with brass. The motor at Grimeton runs at just over 711.3 revolutions per minute, the gearbox has a ratio of 2.973 and the whole contraption generates 17,200 Hz. If you get the sense that you're balancing an elephant on top of a needle, you're almost there, but if you consider that keying the transmitter changes the load and currents, it's more like an elephant being shoved by a train, balancing on top of a needle. At Grimeton, the motor is loaded by one of three liquid resistors, which each consist of a two metre high container filled with water and baking soda. The liquid level is controlled by separate pumps, varying the resistance. Whilst transmitting, a second liquid resistor is added, reducing the resistance to regulate the speed of the motor to maintain the overall speed and the associated frequency. The resistors generate heat which is fed through a heat exchange to the station's water cooling system. The third resistor is available as a spare. The remarkable thing? It works. So much so, that there were several stations built and operated across the planet. There's more. This system is also capable of Amplitude Modulation, and with it, the ability to send the human voice across the airwaves. As an aside, there is a rotating spark-gap transmitter by Canadian electrical engineer and inventor Reginald Fessenden who is said to have given voice to radio in 1900 across a 1.6 km distance, but that's a tale for another day. The frequency that Grimeton transmits on, 17.2 kHz, means a wavelength of nearly 17.5 km. The antenna at Grimeton is "only" about 2 km long, in other words it's a compromise antenna. I'm making a joke here, but also a point, every antenna is a compromise. Any antenna is better than no antenna. Meanwhile, the antenna at Grimeton looks like a string of high voltage pylons with eight wires strung between them. Each of the six towers is 127 meters tall, with a cross arm that's 46 metres wide. Every tower holds a vertical radiator, connected to the ßground via a coil to tune the phase and capacitance of each radiator. So, spark gap this is not, well at least not intentionally. This remarkable piece of engineering makes me wonder if you can use the same system to spin a modern motor, say the spindle of a CNC, and use it to get on air and make noise. Now all I need is someone to talk to. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

GB2RS News Sunday, the 21st of December 2025 The news headlines: A British Science Week opportunity not to be missed Could you be the new RSGB Honorary Skills and Career Development Officer? Challenge yourself with the RSGB Construction Competition The RSGB is giving away 400 FM radio receiver kits and Morse code tutor kits as part of its British Science Week 2026 activities. The kits are available for school, university, Scout, Girlguiding, and Cadet groups, as well as other youth-related Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics groups. The project is being delivered thanks to a partnership between the RSGB Outreach Team, the Radio Communications Foundation and the RSGB Legacy Fund. To get involved, simply complete a form available at rsgb.org/bsw. If you need support, the RSGB can put you in touch with local radio amateurs who can assist. In exchange for the free kits, you'll need to send a brief report and photos that the Society can share afterwards to celebrate the activity and inspire other groups to try amateur radio. Don't miss out on this opportunity to share amateur radio with the next generation. The RSGB is looking for a volunteer Honorary Skills and Career Development Officer. One of the main responsibilities will be to build a team to engage with early-career engineers, as well as those making a career transition, in order to encourage them to use amateur radio to develop their skills and knowledge. As part of this engagement, the Society would like the new team to design and deliver learning material and courses at a level both just beyond and significantly beyond the Full Licence. Go to rsgb.org/volunteers  for the full role description. Keep yourself busy over the Christmas holidays by getting involved with the RSGB Construction Competition. There are seven categories to enter, including ‘Beginners' and ‘Software', which is for designs that recognise the importance of software technology to all aspects of amateur radio. A £150 cash prize will be awarded to the winner of each category, with a £50 cash prize for the runner-up. Find out more about the other categories and details of how to enter at rsgb.org/construction-competition The RSGB is releasing more presentations from its recent Convention. The lectures range in topics from Polar modulation to engaging young people with amateur radio. Four further presentations will be released over the festive season. To make sure you are the first to receive notifications when they're available, click the subscribe button on the Society's YouTube channel at youtube.com/thersgb  Young operators continue to host the special callsign GB25YOTA for Youngsters on the Air Month. Cambridge University Wireless Society is active today, Sunday the 21st of December and then tomorrow, Monday the 22nd of December, Jack, M7OFM, will be operating under the supervision of Pete, M0OFM. View the operating times, bands and modes at rsgb.org/yota-month The RSGB would like to thank Dr Harry Squance, GI4JTF, who has retired after volunteering for 25 years as a QSL Bureau sub-manager. Most recently, Harry was the GI/MI/2I QSL sub-manager, and those callsigns will now be covered by Lindsay Pennell, GI3KME. All stamped addressed envelopes and any outstanding QSL cards will be transferred to Lindsay, but RSGB members in Northern Ireland who collect cards should, in future, send stamped addressed envelopes directly to Lindsay. The list of QSL Sub-managers at rsgb.org/qsl  has been updated to reflect the changes. On the 1st of December 1924, the 200kW Alexanderson alternator, with the callsign SAQ, was put into commercial operation with telegram traffic from Sweden to the United States. 101 years later, it is the only remaining electro-mechanical transmitter from this era and is still in running condition. Using all modes on the 4m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 18th of December 2025 Last week, we suffered from the double whammy of a reduced solar flux index and an increased Kp index. The solar flux index went down to 119 by Thursday, the 18th, with the sunspots looking pretty spartan when compared with just a week or so ago. Unfortunately, a coronal hole contributed to a fast solar wind with a south-pointing interplanetary magnetic field or Bz. The net result was a Kp index of 5 and a minor G1 geomagnetic storm. Nevertheless, the maximum usable frequencies, or MUFs, over a 3,000km path mostly remained above 28MHz, at least during daylight hours, and there was DX to be worked. As it's Christmas, let's focus on special calls for the season. YR0XMAS in Romania has been worked on the 20m band using CW and will be active until the end of the month. A little further afield is the 12 Days of Christmas event in the US. It runs until Christmas Day with 12 three-letter callsigns in the W2 and K2 series. You only have to work one to get a certificate, so it should be possible for most amateurs. If you are lucky enough to work all 12, plus a bonus station in Puerto Rico, you can get a special ‘Clean Sweep Plus' endorsement. W2S has already been spotted in the UK, and more details are available by Googling ‘12 days of Christmas ham radio'. Next week, we have another large coronal hole to contend with, which NOAA predicts may push the Kp index to 5 between the 22nd and 26th of December. The good news is that the solar flux index may increase over the same period, perhaps up to 180 by the 28th of December. Make the most of the low bands as we hit the winter solstice, with its long periods of darkness. And certainly check 14 to 28MHz during daylight hours. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The tail end of the previous week ended on a dramatically mild, wet and windy note, with heavy rain and gales in places. It might be good for the earth, but little else springs to mind other than some chance rain scatter for the GHz folk. The main feature of this Christmas propagation report is that we have a major change becoming established after this weekend. This change takes the form of swapping out the mild Atlantic pattern for a blocked, cold easterly flow with high pressure parked to the north of the British Isles near the Faroe Islands. If this takes place as suggested by some of the models, then a much colder easterly wind will remain with us for much of the Christmas week. The strength of the high means that the flow is only likely to produce shallow cloud, barely enough for an isolated wintry flurry on the east coast of England.  Lighter winds over northern Britain, closer to the high, will possibly allow some tropo, but it is not convincing in view of the shallow dry layer below the inversion. It will mean some sharp frosts are possible where skies clear. Long dark winter nights are potentially good for seeing meteors, and it is worth mentioning two showers this time. The first is the Ursids, which peak around the 22nd and 23rd of December. The second shower to be aware of is the Quadrantids, which peaks on the 3rd and 4th of January. This is a much larger shower than the Ursids, so maybe the one to focus on for radio activity. Aurora remains on the list, especially in view of the large coronal hole recently. As ever, keep an eye on the Kp index for high values, but it is even better to note conditions on the LF bands for signs of ‘watery' sounding signals. The Sporadic-E folklore often speaks of isolated mid-winter events, and, in view of the two meteor showers adding fuel and there being some useful jet streams, it is certainly worth mentioning. Using the jet stream over the Pyrenees for paths to Spain early this week is a good place to start. For EME operators, Moon declination is rising again, and path losses are decreasing. We are past apogee for the month, the point where the Moon is farthest from the Earth. 144MHz sky noise is also reducing again after reaching a peak yesterday, the 20th of December. And that's all from the propagation team this week.
