You're listening to Bardtenders! In this episode of The Mixing Glass, Clint Spotleson joins the Bardtenders to talk about his career in the hospitality industry, the evolution of the Phoenix, Arizona cocktail scene, his time spent at Herbs & Rye in Las Vegas, and the history of Sagamore Rye whiskey! ------------Clint Spotleson grew up in Phoenix, AZ and has spent 20+ years in the bar industry, helping build the Phoenix cocktail scene. Early in his career, Clint got involved with Camp Runamok, where he built a love for whiskey, which eventually led to an opportunity to work with WhistlePig Rye in 2016. Clint left Whistlepig in 2017 for a five-year stint in Vegas at Herbs & Rye, before returning home to Phoenix in late 2021. After some time with Kimpton Hotels, Clint made the decision to officially make the move out from behind the bar, where he ultimately landed his dream role as the Global Advocacy & Engagement Manager with Sagamore Rye.Sagamore Rye has been around since 2013, where they initially bought their rye from MGP while starting up. In 2017 they opened our distillery in Baltimore, Maryland and have been producing our own rye ever since. We use a double mashbill recipe, a 95/5 (rye/ malted barley) high rye and a 52/43/5 (rye/ corn/ malted barley) low rye to create a rye that lines up with what you found historically in Maryland. We work hand in hand with local farmers to be a 100% Grain-to-Glass Maryland Rye Whiskey.------------Don't miss out on any of the action! (From the company website): Each year an unstoppable search for whiskey wonder beckons The Boss Hog to the far corners of the earth... a karmic quest that Knows No Bounds, beginning with Single Barrel Rye. For this, our eleventh utterance of the mantra, WhistlePig's whiskey makers journey to Rajasthan, India - the Land of Kings - in search of precious spices to forge the world's first Thandai barrel aged Rye. An alluring elixir served in celebration of victory and creation, Thandai joins the shakti of Straight Rye Whiskey with a floral meditation of saffron, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg, further enlivened by fennel, poppy and black peppercorn. The result is a splendid wellspring of strength and majesty; a saga befitting the maharajah of Rye. Fearlessly First Among all Whiskeys, Powerfully Complex and Bottled at Proof, The Juggernaut hails to the grandest of all The Boss Hog promises... Stupendous!

Journey Through Time: JP's Adventures in the Spirits Industry and the Art of Armagnac What happens when you drive a German Shepherd and a minivan from Florida to Vermont for an internship that changes your life? My guest, Johnathan Page, fondly known as JP and the Minister of Time at Bhakta Spirits, shares his serendipitous journey into the spirits industry. Starting as an intern at Whistlepig in 2017, JP's story is filled with unexpected twists and turns riding shotgun with Raj Bhakta, the founder of Whistlepig and Bhakta Spirits and a force of nature in the spirits world. JP was alongside Raj as he left Whistlepig, as he took time to find his next venture, and as he discovered the wonders of armagnac. Directing Raj and his partner Leo Gibson from place to place around Tenareze (including some good-natured joking), JP went from a trusted associate to a key figure in Bhakta Spirits' development. He - by his own admission - didn't see himself in the spirits industry. Yet hearing him talk both in person and in this interview, the passion shines. He loves telling stories and meeting new people, introducing them to spirits they never thought they'd try let alone hear about. Plus, his stories about Raj are chef's kiss. Tasting Notes: This 25yr old "North American" single malt whiskey from Whistlepig is likely of Canadian origin, but no matter, it's a juggernaut of oak, fruit, and soft dessert like flavors. It's finished in Silver Oak Cabernet Barrels and perfectly blends the fruit of the malt and the dark fruit of the cab all wrapped up in an ultra-aged, ultra cool, and ultra expensive package. We've got ONE bottle for $1999.99 and if you want it, contact me directly.
They discuss the Formula 1 racing as they drink the Formula 1 inspired whiskey. They mention Monte Carlo, but meant Le Mans. They smoke the Joya Black and drink the Whistle Pig Piggyback Alpha Romeo. Between drinks and smoke they discuss how recently AI has been used to create a new battery, and it worked! https://www.sciencenews.org/article/artificial-intelligence-new-battery
The Malty Boyz™ have their first Bottleshare together in almost a year and it's all craft NA beers! They drink NA so you don't have to and see if all that time and money pumped into R&D was worth it. NA beers from Sierra Nevada, TBFKA Boston Beer Co., Wellbeing, and Deschutes get put through the Power Ranking treatment. In the Beer News, Whistle Pig releases a redonkulous bottle of whiskey, Red Hook is still around and is now getting served with lawsuits, and the decline of Ballast Point continues as they look to offload their production facility. In this episode, we'll explore the enigmatic origins of Larceny bourbon's name. Then, we raise a toast to Basil Hayden's triumphant return of their "Subtle Smoke" expression. Plus is this either the greatest or dumbest name ever for Whistlepig's latest single malt release? And to finish on a high note (see what I did there?), we'll swirl, sip, and discuss the DEA's long-awaited reschedule of cannabis, all while sampling the intriguing new Corazon tequila finished in Blanton's bourbon barrels.
