O Canada! Liberal PM Mark Carney sweeps to victory (well, minority government) in the Canadian General Election. Did Trump's unhinged plans for annexation and his tariff moodswings make him the worst ally Canadian Tories could wish for? And what happens now that Canadians are broadly agreed that yes, Canada should continue to exist as a country? Welcome back to Rick's Rambles, your weekly dose of good news, positivity, trivia, and a few surprises along the way! This week, we're heading north to celebrate our friendly neighbors in Canada with a batch of fun facts that might just surprise you—even if you've visited before.
This week we talk: - Visiting Vancouver (Canada) - Sipping coffee at Cowdog - Celebrating Easter with Sinners Be sure to check out the links below! Connect with us on Instagram Check us out on Youtube
A deep, reflective journey through the French verses of O Canada, revealing each line as more than lyrics—but as timeless medicine for a fractured nation. This is a line-by-line exploration that unearths the moral backbone, spiritual resilience, and emotional intelligence woven into our national hymn. In a time when many feel disconnected, this piece reminds us that our anthem holds a hidden map: to unity, courage, dignity, and hope. Each line is paired with its hidden cure—what it offers to a society in crisis. Not nostalgia, but renewal. Not blind pride, but conscious reverence. Canada's soul is still here—we just have to listen.
A powerful spoken word performance drawn from the French verses of O Canada, this piece reclaims the national anthem as a sacred text—a mirror, a memory, and a mandate. With reverence and raw truth, it weaves history, heritage, and hope into a living call to unity. In a time of division and disillusionment, "Tempered by Faith" reminds Canadians that strength is forged through sacrifice, that courage is steeped in belief, and that our story—though imperfect—is epic. This isn't just a poem. It's a homecoming. A heartbeat. A vow.
Americans see Canada as that friendly neighbor up north. Canadians now see America as their greatest threat. How did we get here, and what does it mean for both nations? Joining me on this week's WhoWhatWhy podcast is veteran political analyst and Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne. Trump's talk of annexation and punitive tariffs has profoundly transformed Canada's relationship with the US, creating a mixture of bewilderment, fear and, unexpectedly for Canadians, fierce national pride. For Coyne, author of the upcoming book The Crisis of Canadian Democracy, the impact goes far beyond politics: It's forcing Canadians to question basic assumptions about their sovereignty and security that have held firm since World War II. What was once unthinkable — the need to defend against US aggression — has become part of the national conversation.
The US, from protector to threat: How Trump's annexation talk and tariff threats upended Canada's election and forced the nation to reimagine its future. Read More: www.WhoWhatWhy.org
Send us a textEvery March, Hollywood seems to enter a strange twilight zone – award season is over, summer blockbusters remain months away, and the theatrical landscape becomes a curious mix of studio castoffs and hidden gems. This year proves particularly fascinating as we've witnessed an unprecedented $320 million Netflix disaster alongside genuinely brilliant filmmaking that's struggling to find its audience. The stark contrast between something like The Electric State – a bloated, CGI-heavy disappointment from the once-celebrated Russo Brothers – and Steven Soderbergh's masterfully crafted spy thriller Black Bag perfectly illustrates the film industry's current identity crisis. While Netflix burns through hundreds of millions for minimal cultural impact, filmmakers like Paul Schrader continue creating thought-provoking character studies like O Canada with a fraction of those resources. We're particularly excited about Opus, a psychological folk horror that blends elements of Get Out and Midsommar with John Malkovich delivering some of his finest work as an aging pop star. This divisive but mesmerizing directorial debut from Mark Anthony Green represents exactly the kind of original filmmaking that deserves theatrical support. Meanwhile, smaller releases like Borderline demonstrate how even promising premises with talented leads like Samara Weaving can falter without proper development. What's becoming increasingly clear is that budget size bears little correlation to quality or cultural significance. The most memorable cinematic experiences of the season come from filmmakers with clear vision and artistic purpose rather than those with the deepest pockets. Whether you're planning your next theater visit or deciding what to stream, let quality guide your choices rather than marketing budgets or algorithm recommendations.Support the show

About 2,000 anti-Israel protesters turned up in downtown Toronto on March 23 for the annual Al-Quds Day march in support of a free Palestine. Ahead of the event, calls to ban these events in cities across Canada were especially loud this year. The rallies—which happen globally—have seen protesters dressed up as suicide bombers, explicit calls for the destruction of Israel, Holocaust distortion, and flags for nationally-banned terrorist organizations, including Hezbollah, Hamas, Samidoun and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. While Toronto police had vowed, days earlier, to beef up their presence at the event and look out for hateful activity, their response has been called a “Band-Aid” approach to address spiking antisemitism in the country. Police did ensure that roughly 25 pro-Israel counter-protesters stood peacefully across the street from the main activity, playing “O Canada” loudly, on repeat, while waving Israeli and Canadian flags. The CJN Daily‘s host Ellin Bessner went to cover the event and clearly heard antisemitic chants of “Go Back to Europe” aimed at the tiny but loud group of Jews. She saw anti-Israel Jews calling Zionism Satanism. And she herself was followed, harassed and chased out of a public city sidewalk and street by anti-Israel protesters when they discovered she worked for a Jewish news organization. Then it's on to the nights beers, and a discussion of the Loons home opener victory over Montreal. They then make their predictions for the upcoming match against San Jose, followed by some MN soccer history. They end the episode with a story about a man who tried to smuggle drugs under his hair piece.

The boys are back – from injuries and to Spring Training. We check in with Christian's actual back, Freddie's ankle, Shohei's throwing arm, and Tito's triggers. We've got new boyfriends with HOU and MIL, so you'll hear about an addition to the Walker collection, Ohio and Mass boys, and a new forever boyfriend. Qualifiers start for the World Baseball Classic, and Pete's got stars in his hair. And we try to work out what constitutes drinking for the cycle. We say, “If we made them the 51st state we couldn't have a ‘world' series,” “An Ohio boy and a Massachusetts boy so they are just like us, except we are not boys,” and, “The chances of that are two in a Brazilian.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com.
