The Ali Forney Center is one of our newest partnerships, this will be the first summer they send youth to camp. The Ali Forney Center's mission is to support LGBTQ+ homeless youth in New York City. The Ali Forney Center is the largest LGBT community center helping LGBTQ homeless youth in the United States. They both manage and develop transitional housing for their clients as well as offer a massive amount of programs and services to holistically support their community. In this episode, Alex Roque the President and Executive Director shares about their impactful work, how much awareness and education play a role, and dreams about the future of this new and growing partnership. In the short time I've known Alex I have already learned so much, he is a dedicated and passionate leader who knows how to create a community filled with joy and care.

Alex and I catch up at our one year anniversary of the podcast. We do what we always do, talk life, lift each other up, share vulnerabilities, and make one another better men. I wouldn't be where I am today without this guy. He's definitely someone pursuing life, embracing the struggle of transitioning to a new profession, and focusing on physical and personal self development.

Many LGBTQ people – especially queer youth – are forced to spend their winter nights in homeless shelters or on the streets because their parents kicked them out for being LGBTQ.  their parents kicked them out because of their queerness. The Ali Forney Center shares dozens of these stories each year during their annual Homeless for the Holidays campaign. We hear from the center's executive director Alex Roque, along with former client and current employee Sammie Crawford. We're also joined by Jayson Connor, who runs Backpacks for the Street, an organization that hands out necessities to those living on the streets.

Alex Roque is President and Executive Director of the Ali Forney Center in New York City. The center was founded in 2002 in memory of Ali Forney, a homeless gender-nonconforming youth who was forced to live on the streets, where they were tragically murdered. Committed to saving the lives of LGBTQ+ young people, their mission is to protect them from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently. A 24-hour program, The Ali Forney Center never closes its doors. They provide more than just a bed and food for those in need — from initial intake at our drop-in center to transitional housing and job readiness training, we provide homeless LGBTQ+ youth a safe, warm, supportive environment to escape the streets. Alex shares with us his own amazing journey working with the center, which just celebrated their 20th anniversary.
