In this opening line from the classic Charles Dickens novel a A Tale Of Two Cities, never has a quote. It's so close to home and resonated so deeply as in the appropriate description of season four of The Suffering Podcast. Today's guests make me rethink the saying “Don't meet your idols”. I'm joined by Tom Flynn and Mia Dean of Antler Family. Tom's extensive musical career features bands like Fang and Cornelius Asperger and the Bi-Curious Unicorns. Mia is operatically trained and spent time studying opera in Austria and Italy. She was a huge fan of Tom's music and jumped at the opportunity to play with one of her idols. But before all that, Tom reveals an early love of hard rock and prog before starting Fang, his roles with The Melvins, and selling his leftover shirts to a band with the same name. Mia tells how she decided to sing opera at the age of eighteen, how she started a punk rock venue/opera house, and meeting her husband/bandmate, Tom Dean. Antler Family's debut album came out early this year after a five year delay. It's like if Crazy Horse played punk rock. There are so many surprises in there! Tom and Mia reveal a few alternate band names and I reveal the Youtube typo that COMPLETELY changes the meaning of one of their songs. Pick up the album wherever you get music, except Amazon. Maybe try Bandcamp or midheaven.com if you like vinyl. Follow their socials @antler_family. Follow the show @PerformanceAnx. Slide us a coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. And check out Mia Dean and Tom Flynn of Antler Family on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Following their victory over Tyrone last week, Galway's senior footballers welcome in-form Derry in Round 4 of the National League on Sunday (25th Feburary - 1.45pm Pearse Stadium). It's their first meeting since the 2022 All-Ireland semi-final when 2-2 from Damien Comer secured the Tribesmen a 2-8 to 1-6 victory in Croke Park. Galway were also 4-11 to 0-12 winners in their last meeting in the National League up in Owenbeg in Division 2 in 2022. Matthew Tierney, Dessie Conneally, Damien Comer and Tomo Culhane got the goals that day. The last time the Oak Leaf County visited Galway was in 2017 when the hosts again reigned supreme by 5-15 to 2-15 in Tuam Stadium with goals from Eamonn Brannigan, Johnny Heaney, Danny Cummins, Tom Flynn and Shane Walsh. Derry's last victory over Galway in the league was in Pearse Stadium in 2010 by 2-13 to 1-12. But the Ulster champions are a different proposition now with maximum points from their three outings so far following a McKenna Cup success and Mickey Harte's charges will be favourites to maintain their unbeaten run. Leading up to the game, former Derry captain Johnny McBride joined Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly on 'Over The Line.' == Throw-in at Pearse Stadium on Sunday is 1.45pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM. The 'Over The Line' weekend preview show broadcasts every Friday evening from 7pm on Galway Bay FM.
On this episode, Tom Flynn joins host Stephanie Shonekan to talk about “You Can't Hurry Love,” an original song by The Supremes that Phil Collins covered in 1982. Though the songs were released a couple decades apart, the message is timeless – and, perhaps a bit frustrating: love takes time. Tom and Stephanie discuss their memories of youth, wanting love and how the song can stand as a light-hearted reminder to hold on.
Tom Flynn has been around lawn enforcement since January 1997 starting as a civilian dispatcher. Tom was promoted to sergeant in 2005 and then to Lieutenant in 2015. His most enjoyable assignment was being a member of the swat team from 2002 to 2004. Most of Tom‘s experience was in uniform but for 7 1/2 years Tom worked as the agencies accreditation manager developing and writing policy and procedure. all of these accomplishments, pale in comparison to being a father to his 3 Children. Being exposed to critical incidents was what he signed up for, but they left a lasting scar on his soul. As the horrors of the Job began to compound, Tom's home life began to fell apart. On March 28, 2019, Tom's spouse called 911 during a verbal argument listening to his three children crying out saying daddy please don't go still haunts him to this day. His life was turned upside down. After having the temporary restraining order dropped in April 2019, four days later, Tom was arrested in the driveway was home for assault with weapons and possession of high-capacity magazines from inherited firearms from his father. Tom was incarcerated in the Essex county jail, and then transported to Bergen county for his own protection. After spending 12 days in lock up and on house arrest, Tom was facing 20 years in prison under the graves act. Tom has been in a fight to reclaim his life after hitting rock-bottom. His suffering has been a springboard to motivate and help others in similar situations. Tom still fights the alienation of his three beloved children.Find Tom FlynnInstagramF.A.C.E Find The Suffering PodcastThe Suffering Podcast InstagramKevin Donaldson InstagramMike Failace InstagramBuzzsproutApple PodcastSpotifyFacebookTikTokYouTubeThe Suffering Podcast FamilyDented Development ProjectToyota of HackensackBella Dama CigarsSupport the showThe Suffering Podcast Instagram Kevin Donaldson Instagram TikTok YouTube

Welcome to the Great Fresan Relisten of 2023! Over the next four weeks, we'll be reissuing an episode a day from the The Invented Part and The Dreamed Part seasons of TMR so that you can catch-up, refresh your memory, have a few laughs, etc., before the May 10th launch of Season 19 on The Remembered Part. Here are the show notes from the original airing: This week's episode is all about Penelope and her experiences with the Karmas. (And a Big Green Cow.) A lot of the Odyssey, Wuthering Heights, and William Burroughs are in this section, which is hilariously dissected by Brian, Chad, and their guest, Tom Flynn, the manager of Volumes Bookcafe in Chicago. One of the funniest--and most free-flowing, almost beat-like--sections of the book to date, this section explains a lot of the causes for Penelope's madness, while parodying an ultra-rich family of backstabbing, self-involved, frustratingly funny characters--many of whom make great material for a novel . . . You can purchase each of the books in the trilogy separately (Invented, Dreamed, Remembered, OR, if you don't have them and are ready for the reading event of 2023, then get The Part Trilogy for $40—approximately 30% off. You can find all previous seasons of TMR on our YouTube channel aaand you can support us at Patreon and get bonus content before anyone else, along with other rewards, the opportunity to easily communicate with the hosts, etc. And please rate us—wherever you get your podcasts! FFRF's Reproductive Rights Intern Barbara Alvarez tells us why abortion is a state/church issue that should concern all freethinkers. We remember Tom Flynn of the Council for Secular Humanism, who died this year, by hearing the 2006 interview he did for us about his book The Trouble With Christmas. Then we listen to Winter Solstice songs by Dan Barker and Kristin Lems.

When Jeff Newcastle meets Dara, a beautiful Belarusian girl, on the first day of poetry class at UCLA, he imagines he's stumbled onto the perfect college romance. Unfortunately, his fixation on Dara's beauty prevents him from seeing the truth about her tragic life. Doubting a normal relationship could ever be possible, Dara pulls some mysterious strings to redirect Jeff's affection toward Carey, a sweet and kindhearted coed in Jeff's circle of friends. Jeff's romance with Carey blossoms steadily until he's awakened by a late-night phone call and summoned by a man's voice to a large estate in the Hollywood Hills. It is here where Jeff finds that a bruised and bloodied Dara has locked herself in an upstairs bathroom. Jeff does his best to pull Dara immediately out of danger, but he soon realizes it is only the beginning of his problems. Jeff must find a way to save Dara without falling deeper into her chaotic world or sacrificing his budding relationship with Carey. About Tom Flynn: Tom Flynn lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He spent his early twenties as an aspiring playwright putting up shows on small stages around Los Angeles. The responsibility of adulthood came calling and he spent the next two decades building his career in the tech industry, but he just couldn't shake the writing bug. So here we are today. His influences are Tennessee Williams, Sandra Cisneros, and Haruki Murakami. A Girl Named Dara is his first novel. Sawtelle Gemini, his second novel, is scheduled for publication in Spring 2022. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

This episode I'm going to share my own memories of Cleveland's Irish community during the 1950s and 1960s--my growing up years. My family was involved with the Hibernians and Irish dancing. The Hibernians put on an annual St. Patrick's Day banquet and held card parties to raise money for Irish missionary priests. We helped with Parade floats, manned tables at nationality fairs, and attended Irish picnics at Euclid Beach Park. Our parishes reinforced our Irish identity. At St. Mel's Parish, where I grew up, Fr. Tom Flynn organized an annual St. Patrick's Day show and encouraged us to take Irish dancing lessons from Tessie Burke at the old I.A. Hall on Madison Avenue. We attended feises or dancing competitions at the Berea Fairgrounds, did danceouts at the Irish Cultural Garden, and went to ceili dances sponsored by the Gaelic Society--nurturing a lifelong love of Irish music and dance. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this episode, we take a brief look back at what the business community experienced in 2020 and then looked forward to the new year. We also explore what the work and hiring environment will look like in 2021. We start with a look back, and of course, that is the ugly … and the bad, and then look forward to the good. Recognizing that some folks will want to focus primarily on the good (something I can totally understand), we’ve included time markers for where each part starts. To be honest, there are lessons to be learned from reviewing the bad and the ugly, as painful as those issues may be. The Good Commentary starts at the 15:45-minute mark How we’ll work and hire in 2021 at the 11-minute 40-second mark The Bad Commentary starts at the 6-minute mark The Ugly Commentary starts at the 1-minute 20-second mark Host: Mary Schaeffer (www.ap-now.com) Guest: Tom Flynn (www.spendmend.com) Credit: Music: https://www.purple-planet.com
Christmas in 2020 will be unlike any other in recent history due to COVID 19. Nevertheless, Christians around the world will be finding ways to celebrate the birth of Christ. On this episode of Point of Inquiry, Jim speaks to Tom Flynn, editor of Free Inquiry magazine and author of The Trouble With Christmas. Affectionately known as the Anti-Claus, Tom gives some insight to when Jesus may actually have been born, the origins of the Christmas holiday, how traditions have changed over the centuries, modern day customs surrounding the event, and the alleged "War on Christmas", real and imagined. Happy just another day everyone! We are proud to announce that this episode of Point of Inquiry was sponsored by the Wadsworth-Sheng Fund. Our friends, Spike Wadsworth and Sherry Sheng, are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to thought-provoking content that addresses the big questions in science, religion, politics, and culture. We are grateful for their support. If you would like to learn more about how to support Point of Inquiry or the work of its umbrella organization, the Center for Inquiry, please contact our Director of Development, Connie Skingel, at development@centerforinquiry.org.
Feel free to share your insights on 2021 in the comments section below. Wonder what next year will be like for professionals in accounting and accounts payable? What about the future of live conferences? Fingers crossed, we’ll have a very different year next year and it will be better in ways you might not have considered. Listen to this savvy group to find out how and why. The co-hosts (Jamie Radford, CEO of AP Association, and Mary Schaeffer, Founder AP Now) are joined by a panel of experts (Stewart Griffiths, Tom Flynn, Heather Peters, and Teri Cook). They discussed the surprising things they learned about themselves and their accounts payable function in 2020, what they found the most difficult, and their outlook for 2021. If you are feeling blue their uniformly optimistic outlook for 2021 will brighten you up – especially the prediction at the end about how we look back on 2020. Wondering about the future of conferences? It was interesting to hear the different perspectives: from the conference organizer to the attendees and finally from the view of a frequent exhibitor. The live audience was quite generous in sharing their thoughts and experiences as well. This week's episode is all about Penelope and her experiences with the Karmas. (And a Big Green Cow.) A lot of the Odyssey, Wuthering Heights, and William Burroughs are in this section, which is hilariously dissected by Brian, Chad, and their guest, Tom Flynn, the manager of Volumes Bookcafe in Chicago. One of the funniest--and most free-flowing, almost beat-like--sections of the book to date, this section explains a lot of the causes for Penelope's madness, while parodying an ultra-rich family of backstabbing, self-involved, frustratingly funny characters--many of whom make great material for a novel . . . Feel free to comment on this episode--or on the book in general--either on this post, or at the official GoodReads Group.
