Michael #1: Solara UI Framework via Florian A Pure Python, React-style Framework for Scaling Your Jupyter and Web Apps Solara lets you build web apps from pure Python using ipywidgets or a React-like API on top of ipywidgets. These apps work both inside the Jupyter Notebook and as standalone web apps with frameworks like FastAPI. See the Examples page. Based on Reacton By building on top of ipywidgets, Solara automatically leverage an existing ecosystem of widgets and run on many platforms, including JupyterLab, Jupyter Notebook, Voilà, Google Colab, DataBricks, JetBrains Datalore, and more. Brian #2: Coverage at a crossroads Ned Batchelder is working on making coverage.py faster. Includes a nice, quick explanation of roughly how coverage.py works with trace function and arcs used for branch coverage. And how trace slows things down for lines we know are already covered. There are cool ideas from SlipCover that could be applicable. There's also sys.monitoring from Python 3.12 that helps with line coverage, since you can disable it for lines you already have info on. It doesn't quite complete the picture for branch coverage, though. Summary: jump in and help if you can read it anyway for a great mental model of how coverage.py works. Michael #3: “Virtual” methods in Python classes via Brian Skinn PEP 698 just got accepted, defining an @override decorator for type hinting, to help avoid errors in subclasses that override methods. Only affects type checkers but allows you to declare a “link” between the base method and derived class method with the intent of overriding it using OOP. If there is a mismatch, it's an error. Python 3.12's documentation Makes Python a bit more like C# and other more formal languages Brian #4: Parsing Python ASTs 20x Faster with Rust Evan Doyle Tach is “a CLI tool that lets you define and enforce import boundaries between Python modules in your project.” we covered it in episode 384 When used to analyze Sentry's ~3k Python file codebase, it took about 10 seconds. Profiling analysis using py-spy and speedscope pointed to a function that spends about 2/3 of the time parsing the AST, and about 1/3 traversing it. That portion was then rewritten in Rust, resulting in 10x speedup, ending in about 1 second. This is a cool example of not just throwing Rust at a speed problem right away, but doing the profiling homework first, and focusing the Rust rewrite on the bottleneck. A few of the lyrics are: I can't wait to get on the road again On the road again Goin' places that I've never been Seein' things that I may never see again And I can't wait to get on the road again. For a few weeks or longer, my car has been making some weird sounds, and well, I've been acting like I didn't hear them. Lol. You know the minor inconveniences of life that require your attention, oftentimes we/or I may avoid them, because I just don't wanna deal with it. I have lived long enough to know that that doesn't usually work out so well. Avoidance btw is not a good strategy. I would get in the car, and ask for guidance and protection, and it was working out pretty good. Until this happened… Last Tuesday as I was about to leave to go to the store my car began squealing when I started it. I cringed as my husband came over to look at the car, he diagnosed it as possibly something related to belts or the AC. Ugh. Drats, I knew I was about to get off the road. You see, this car was my mother's car. It's a 2007 Lexus SUV with over 200K miles. I told my husband I had been hearing strange noises for a few weeks so we knew it wasn't safe to drive. I began cleaning out the car so it could be towed. As I began the process I started feeling very melancholy. I remembered the times I would drive my mother around, you see when she moved in with me in 2012 this was the car we used. My 2007 Solara was not as comfortable as her car was, so hers became our main car. My mother wasn't into “things” so her buying this car was huge. This is not just a car, it is a mobile memory capsule. It's filled with vivid memories including when my brother, Tony, my mom and I drove to Philly to her last living brother's funeral. It happened to be in 2008 when Barack Obama won the election and we got caught up in the DC traffic. Mom and I traveled around laughing about stories of my childhood and her life in this car. The car is 17 years old so a decision would have to be made about what to do based on the diagnosis. I decided I would put on salsa music and celebrate whatever would be next for the car and I went down memory lane while taking stuff out. Yeah, I had a lot in my car. Music is great for shifting your mindset. You know when you hear a certain song you are transported to that time and sometimes it takes you back to when you first heard this song? I put in my Juan Luis Guerra's 440 cd (yes, I said cd) and began dancing and singing as I cleaned out the car. I really fell in love with salsa music after hearing his song, Quisiera, while I was out dancing. The song roughly translates to I would like to. I cleaned out car and moved from melancholy to gratitude thinking over the memories I shared with my family and friends in this car. I love how music can shift your state of mind so quickly. Next I wanted to have ease with the towing and the conversation about the car repairs. On Wednesday morning AAA came quickly to tow the car. Justin, the driver, asked a few questions and was courteous and professional and there was a picture of Tigger and Winnie the Pooh on the side of his tow truck. That totally made me laugh. The funny thing is I have miniature stuffed Pooh and Tigger hanging via carabiners on my rearview window. All I could do was smile and give thanks for the ease and grace with the pickup. This week I travel to Noble Creatures Cask House in Youngstown, Ohio to talk to co-owner and head brewer Ira Gerhart. This was a fantastic visit and my first to Youngstown. We kicked things off a bit differently as I shared my pressure fermented pilsner with Ira for some feedback. After that we got into some great beer discussion about open and spontaneous fermentation as well as barrel aging and Solara projects. We discussed the 100-year-old church that the brewery is located in, and how receptive their customers have been to some of the funkier styles of beers they are doing at Noble Creatures. Solara's history lessons open the eyes of a few rebels. Meanwhile, Ryger finds himself in desperate need of his kidnapper after his interaction with The Round while above ground.

Jodrick risks everything to free Solara. Ryger tends to his wounds in the lab with his medication of choice. Beatrice leads public executions in town. Ryger finally learns the truth about Solara's past.

Tempers rise as conflict between rebels and members of The Round intensify. A new immortal prisoner forces Solara to face her past. Beatrice shares a tender childhood reminiscence with Solara. And where the hell is Ryger?

A rebellion is rising against the monarchy, fueled by a devout religious entity known as The Round. Ryger reluctantly confides in Solara about King Drysis's condition while questioning her motives.

Ryger's new found freedom stears him toward unexpected companions. Meanwhile, Solara learns more about her captors, and finds herself in quite a pickle.

The past appears to be repeating itself as rebellion grows in the city of Cassia. Meanwhile, Solara discovers a change in her immortal specimen.

The tables turn for Solara and Ryger as the revolt grows in the city. Solara meets a particularly savage member of The Round whose motives are similar to her own, just slightly more…barbaric. Ryger finds himself on the wrong side of the rebellion.

Solara, the nostalgic scientist, becomes overwhelmed by her drunken and sulking prisoner. Reluctantly, she gets to know her immortal foe and begins to find him only moderately repugnant.

Ryger and Solara pass the time exchanging stories of the past, some more gruesome and graphic than others.

After what he thought would be a night well spent with a stranger, Ryger finds himself taken captive by Solara, a self-proclaimed scientist. As the booze and pharmaceuticals wear off, Ryger realizes the restraints he's in are not purely for play. Solara is on a mission, one that can only be accomplished with the help of Ryger's immortality.

Ryger's melodrama is exacerbated by Solara's life-changing inoculum. Without the monarchy's medical records, Solara is not able to reverse what she has done to her specimen. Ryger decides to let her in on a little royal secret.

With help from a professional criminal, Solara breaks into the royal medical archives. After a traumatic evening, Solara finds solace from an unusual source, Ryger.

Ryger becomes more suspicious of Solara's intentions and catches her in a lie. Feelings of betrayal and deceit tarnish their growing connection, and the two are left to fend for themselves.

New voices emerge as Solara unwillingly encounters members of the rebellion, as well as old friends of Ryger's. Meanwhile, Ryger is haunted by the ghosts of rebellion's past.
