Vor ziemlich genau 30 Jahren erschien das Debut von Jamiroquai. Darauf vereinigte die Band aus London bekannte Einflüsse aus Soul, Jazz und Funk, erschuf aber durch ungeahnte Kombinationsmöglichkeiten mit Reggae, Latin, dem Didgeridoo und einem ehrlichen Interesse an Native Americans ihr ganz eigenes Genre. Der Titel „Emergency on Planet Earth“ lässt erahnen, wie zeitlos dringlich das Werk ist, es hätte auch in den 70er Jahren oder 2023 erscheinen können – und wäre genauso gefeiert worden. Danach driften Jamiroquai im besten Sinne ab ins Weltall, mit dem chilligen „Space Cowboy“, dem discoiden „Cosmic Girl“ und dem extraterrestrischen Synthie-Funk von „A Funk Odyssey“ und „Automaton“ – immer begleitet von einer stilsicheren Optik in deren Mittelpunkt das Logo der Band, der Buffalo Man, leicht windschief steht. Sänger Jay Kay ist die Vorlage für diesen Buffalo Man und heute, als einziges festes Bandmitglied, ist Jay Kay auch Jamiroquai – wohingegen man vorher jahrzehntelang zwischen Bandname und Sänger unterscheiden musste. British officials and space scientists said they were disappointed but not deterred after the first attempt to launch satellites into orbit from the U.K. ended in failure. U.S.-based Virgin Orbit attempted its first international launch late January 9, using a modified jumbo jet to carry one of its rockets from Cornwall in southwestern England over the Atlantic Ocean. The plane released the rocket, carrying nine small satellites for a mix of civilian and domestic uses. But about two hours after the plane took off, the company reported “an anomaly that has prevented us from reaching orbit.” The plane, piloted by a Royal Air Force pilot, returned to Cornwall. The rocket and satellites were destroyed. “We're feeling awful, to be honest – I'm not going to lie,” Melissa Thorpe, head of Spaceport Cornwall, said. “This isn't the first time we've been knocked, this is the biggest definitely, but I feel OK and we'll get up and we'll go again,” she said. Virgin Orbit, which was founded by British transport and telecommunications tycoon Richard Branson, previously completed four similar launches from California. Hundreds of people gathered for the Cornwall launch had cheered when a repurposed Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 aircraft, named Cosmic Girl, took off last Jan. 9. Around an hour into the flight, the plane released the rocket at around 35,000 feet (around 10,000 meters) over the Atlantic Ocean to the south of Ireland. Virgin Orbit chief executive Dan Hart said “a technical failure appears to have prevented us from delivering the final orbit.” “While we are very proud of the many things that we have successfully achieved as part of this mission, we are mindful that we failed to provide our customers with the launch service they deserve,” he said. The mission was a collaboration between the U.K. Space Agency, the Royal Air Force, Virgin Orbit and Cornwall Council. Britain hopes to become a major player in making and launching satellites and is building a spaceport in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland as well as the one in Cornwall. The UK's first satellite launch faced several delays in 2022, but Virgin Orbit's Cosmic Girl is prepped for imminent take off. BBC science correspondent Jonathan Amos has been following the activity in Newquay and, alongside Melissa Thorpe head of Spaceport Cornwall, describes the potential this launch has to promote and bolster the UK's space industry. Is laziness a particularly human trait? Apparently not according to Dr Daniella Rabaiotti from the Zoological Society of London. Her research shows many animals engage in behaviour akin to laziness even within groups where others might be very active. There's evidence for this from animals as diverse as wolves, frogs and pheasants. Victoria Gill speaks to the founder and CEO of Nature Metrics Dr Cat Bruce and Katie Critchlow about the tools they use to help companies measure biodiversity at their worksites. From taking water or soil samples it's possible to detect the DNA of a multitude of organisms from large animals down to microbes. Sunday will mark Virgin Orbit's launch debut, if all goes according to plan. Virgin Orbit plans to launch for the very first time just a few days from now. The company is targeting Sunday (May 24) for its Launch Demo mission, with a backup opportunity on Monday (May 25). The four-hour window will open each day at 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT), Virgin Orbit representatives announced today (May 20). Launch Demo will be a huge milestone for Virgin Orbit, which has been developing its air-launch system for five years. Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne is a rather unique launch vehicle. It’s a rocket that deploys, or drops, from a customized Boeing 747 -- a “Flying Launchpad," so-to-speak. One of those aircraft, a former passenger airliner operated by Virgin Atlantic, was purchased by Virgin Galactic in 2015, renamed “The Cosmic Girl” and designated to be used as the first stage launch platform for the Mark II LauncherOne. Why design a launch service this way? Billionaire Richard Branson’s satellite launch business is one step closer to a live test flight after sending its launch vehicle plummeting into the California desert this week. Like its sister spaceflight company, Virgin Galactic, Virgin Orbit hopes to reduce costs by launching its rockets and small satellite payloads from an airborne jet. During this week’s “drop test,” the company’s modified 747, known as Cosmic Girl, ascended to roughly 35,000 feet and successfully released a LaunchOne rocket equipped with water and antifreeze, which simulated the fuel it would carry during the real thing. Because the test was designed to test only the release of the rocket, Virgin Orbit didn’t care all that much what happened to it afterward: a harrowing descent and crash at Edwards Air Force Base. The 747 and the LaunchOne rocket went through previous flight and ground tests, respectively, and the company says it’s now ready for a series of final checks before a flight test with a functioning rocket. It’s unclear when that test might occur, but once it does, Virgin Orbit reportedly hopes to start commercial launches within 10 weeks.
