In this episode, Lynne Twist, Alexander McCobin and I talk about how, now more than ever, it is so critical for us to show up differently and more conscious. Lynne is the epitome of a conscious leader making a difference around her every single day and discusses the critical transformation we need to make from the unconscious and unexamined assumptions we hold to move from a lens of scarcity to sufficiency. Alexander is a beacon of energy and positivity to change the DNA of our business world and discusses the important role Conscious Capitalism is playing in this. The problems our world is facing demand we ALL show up as leaders and that the business and activist communities start partnering to find solutions together. We are neurobiologically hardwired for connection; our conversation reinforces this and that we need to partner and be in relationship to pave a path for a better, more sustainable future. I walked away inspired, encouraged and hopeful and know you'll feel the same! Dev Patnaik is the CEO of Jump, a leading strategy and innovation firm. Building on a common theme of the evolution of capitalism came the topic of conscious capitalism, itself a book written by Whole Foods’ co-founder and CEO, John Mackey. Now, Mackey himself sits on the board of Conscious Capitalism, Inc, and I reached out to their CEO, Alexander McCobin, to see if he’d come on the show. Instead of McCobin, I was introduced to Dev, who sits on their board. Following? Got it? Good! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Alexander McCobin and the organization he leads, Conscious Capitalism, believe that capitalism is a way forward for humanity to ethically engage with each other to build and support a global network of businesses dedicated to this conscious mindset. One of Conscious Capitalism’s partners, Curriculum Associates, has been ramping up this conscious focus even further in light of COVID-19. Under CEO Rob Waldron’s direction, CA has been bringing millions of school children back to class either online, hybrid, or offline. As Investopedia spells it out, the term conscious capitalism refers to a socially responsible economic and political philosophy. Proponents of conscious capitalism believe that businesses should operate ethically while they pursue profits. This means they should consider serving all stakeholders involved including their employees, humanity, and the environment—not just their management teams and shareholders. The idea of conscious capital was created by Whole Foods co-founder John Mackey and marketing professor Raj Sisodia. The philosophy of Conscious Capitalism has support among leading business leaders and think tanks on the left and right. Yet it also has some critics. “Mackey has provided an example of how an individual can run a successful and ethical business in the modern era,” writes analyst Jonathan Liedl. “If everyone were like him, then certainly the ethics of capitalism would be far more socially conscious. However, everyone is not like him.” Still, conscious capitalism is worth a study for a closer understanding and grasp of some of the economic and social challenges of our age. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support

Expanded show notes on the Rise Leaders Radio websiteDownload the TranscriptInching Towards Conscious Capitalism as Business as UsualConscious capitalism is a term, a movement and the name of the non-profit organization, Conscious Capitalism, Inc. (CCI), whose role is to be the foundation of the movement. CCI brings business leaders together to share best practices for implementing the ideals of conscious capitalism. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when and where the term originated, but aspects of conscious capitalism have been around for decades. As we discuss in the interview, Conscious Capitalism provides an organizing principle for many practices that put humans at the center of the business ecosystem.Might we be so bold as to hope that the terms, conscious and social capitalism become redundant and that Alexandar McCobin gladly invests his passion in another worthy endeavor? I believe it's a worthwhile place to invest one's energy.
