Bing. Frank. Billie. Robeson. Aretha. Diana. Dionne. Whitney. Mariah. Michael. Marvin. Luther. It is rarified company, but indelibly classic and everlasting in the annals of American music and a club Luther Vandross' membership is permanent. Coupled with that voice, was Luther's unique ability to write and sing about love and the shared emotions we all feel in that search and enjoyment of love. Love of family, friends, the special someone–all were themes Luther explored with his music regularly, reaching many, becoming a staple in the most joyous moments of people's lives through his songs for the last two generations.  At the time of Luther's death in 2005 following complications from a stroke two years earlier, Luther had been in entertainment for 35 years. From his introduction to the world as a singer on the first season of PBS's Sesame Street in 1969 to winning four Grammy Awards in 2004, Luther was a permanent and dynamic force in popular music. He crossed boundaries, starting with his earliest success as a background vocalist and arranger for David Bowie, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Donna Summer, Carly Simon, Judy Collins, J. Geils Band, Ben E. King, Ringo Starr and Chic. He produced records for Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston. He wrote one of the climactic musical numbers (“Everybody Rejoice”) for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and Academy Award nominated film The Wiz. Luther's reach is extensive enough that CBS Sports has used his rendition of “One Shining Moment” for their coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament since 2003, and Luther performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXXI in January 1997 in New Orleans.  For almost 25 years, from 1981 to 2005, Luther dominated the American R+B music charts like no other artist before or since. In that span Luther released eight (8) #1 R&B albums, seven (7) #1 R&B singles and another five (5) Top 20 R&B singles. He achieved crossover status with eight (8) Billboard Top 10 albums, including reaching #1 with 2003's Dance With My Father; and another five (5) Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles. Between 1981 to 1996, Luther Vandross released 11 consecutive platinum/double platinum albums on CBS/Sony's Epic Records label; and at the time of his passing in 2005, 13 of Luther's 14 studio albums had gone platinum or multi-platinum. Luther's success was not confined to the United States, with record sales of over 40 million worldwide since 1981, including four (4) Top 10 UK albums (one #1). In March 1989, Luther Vandross was the first male artist to sell out 10 consecutive live shows at London's Wembley Arena. Throughout his distinguished career, Luther Vandross was active in charitable causes with the United Negro College Fund and the NY Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, in addition to performing at numerous charity concerts, mostnotably Michael Jackson's Heal The World concerts in the 1990's. Luther also contributed the song “The Christmas Song” to the A Very Special Christmas 2 record released in 1992 to benefit the Special Olympics.Overall, Luther received 31 Grammy Award nominations, winning 8 times. Additionally, Luther won eight (8) American Music Awards, including Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist seven (7) times. Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. “What Are We Drinking About” w/ Jodi & Erik …aka Bougie & the BEERst Thursday, April 1, 2021 Easter & Passover/ Women in “Herstory” Month…Women in Brewing (Pink Boots Society) Episode   For tonight's show, we have a real treat for you! There are 2 themes going on. 1st we're celebrating Easter/Passover and Women In “Herstory”…women in brewing! While I wasn't able to find any beers with little bunnies, chicks or eggs on them…I was able to find some delicious, lighter libations that represented the pretty spring colors that we start to find around this time! The Easter/Passover Beers are: 42th North Source Seltzer- Strawberry & Lime: ABV 4% | IBUs N/ABrewed with real strawberry, lime juice, and hibiscus. Dry-hopped with Sabro. Genesee Brewing – Ruby Red Kolsch: ABV 4.5% | IBUs 8Inspired by our German brewing lineage, we set out to brew a refreshing Kölsch, with a 21st-century update of ruby red grapefruit. The result is a crisp, bright golden ale with a bready malt body and a mild hop bitterness that complement the perfect addition of tart, mouthwatering grapefruit Hamburg Brewing- Raspberry Lemon Kolsch: ABV 5.6% | IBUs N/AA clean, crisp, refreshing Kolsch fruited with copious amounts of raspberry and lemon. In this modern interpretation of the classic style, a subtle American malt base is balanced with citrus-heavy American hops for a refreshing finish. Rusty Nickle        Sour: ABV  | IBUs   Women in History Month….Women in Brewing Women have played an important role in the history of beer! It was the women that predominately did the brewing from ancient society through the Middle Ages…up until the mid-1800s'. Here in the US, Women have been sorely underrepresented in the brewing community. OF late, they have been gaining momentum in the craft beer & brewing scene. A major example of that is with the Pink Boots Society! On Tuesday, July 7, Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby shared the wonderful story of their upcoming book, “We Refuse to be Enemies”, about how the paths of a Muslim woman and a Jewish man crossed and led to a joint endeavor for a meaningful purpose. Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby, a Muslim-American woman of Pakistani origin and a Jewish-American man who spent his formative years in Israel, will share their story of how they connected and embarked on a mission to bring their respective communities together in their common homeland, America. Growing up in Pakistan, Sabeeha never met a Jew, her view colored by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In his youth, Walter never met a Muslim, his opinion shaped by Leon Uris's Exodus. What changed their perceptions? How did they fare in nurturing Muslim-Jewish communication and cooperation? Sabeeha and Walter will share their experiences of facing pushback from their communities, overcoming obstacles and bringing together Muslims and Jews to explore unexpected commonalities between their faiths; to work together to help people in need and stand together against bigotry. Finally, they will offer their vision for reconciliation. Sabeeha and Walter have co-authored a book, We Refuse to be Enemies. How Muslims and Jews can make Peace, One Friendship at a Time, due for publication in Spring 2021. It is their hope that this book will inspire people of all faiths and ethnicities to reach out to each other and heal our nation. Speakers of the Event SABEEHA REHMAN is the author of the 2016 memoir, “Threading My Prayer Rug. One Woman’s Journey from Pakistani Muslim to American Muslim,”  Short-Listed for the 2018 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, the book also received several other nominations and awards. She is also an op-ed contributor to the Wall Street Journal and New York Daily News. In the early 1980s, concerned about raising her sons as Muslims in the absence of a Muslim community, she set to work, and her commitment culminated in the building of a mosque on Staten Island where her family lived. Sabeeha, who holds a Masters in Healthcare Administration, served as a hospital executive for 25 years.  Thereafter, responding to her grandson’s autism diagnosis, she co-founded the NY Chapter of the National Autism Association and served as its President from 2008-11. As a public speaker, she has spent several decades engaging in interfaith dialogue and now serves as a board member of the Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Committee as well as the NY Chapter of the National Autism Association. She blogs on topics related to American Muslim experience at www.sabeeharehman.com/blog. She lives in New York City with her husband Khalid, a retired Hematologist/Oncologist. WALTER RUBY is a veteran activist in Muslim-Jewish relations. From 2008-2017, in the position of Muslim-Jewish Relations Director at the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, he organized hundreds of twinning events; bringing together thousands of Jews and Muslims in over 30 countries on five continents, including members of mosques and synagogues and Muslim and Jewish organizations. Ruby presently serves as executive director of Jews, Muslims and Allies Acting Together (JAMAAT), a grassroots community of Muslim, Jewish and Interfaith activists in Greater Washington; and as Coordinator of the Washington Area Chapter of Project Rozana, which works to strengthen ties between Israelis and Palestinians through health care. Ruby is currently co-authoring a book with Muslim-American author Sabeeha Rehman entitled We Refuse To Be Enemies: How Muslims and Jews Can Make Peace, One Friendship at a Time. Ruby has worked as a reporter and commentator for more than 40 years, mainly for American Jewish and Israeli publications. His articles and op-eds have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and other media. Walter lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Tatayna.

Justin Kalifowitz operates Songtrust and serves as President of Downtown Music Publishing. Prior to Downtown, Justin spent six years with Spirit Music Group acting as Head of A&R, and held positions with RCA and Virgin Records. Justin has been named in Billboard Magazine’s “30 Under 30" Faces to Watch and Crain’s “Forty Under 40" Rising Stars of New York Business. Justin is on the Board of Directors for the NY Chapter of the Association of Independent Music Publishers. This interview with Justin Kalifowitz on the topic of music publishing is a well of insight. His answers shed light on some of the key elements of the most valuable yet complicated areas of the music business. Newcomers and mainstays will have something to take away. Justin Kalifowitz, 35, thinks both big and small. Since Downtown Music Publishing was founded in 2007, the company has made deals for the songwriting catalogs of Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco, and Niall Horan; served as administrator for independents like Big Yellow Dog and the John Lennon and Yoko Ono catalogs; and expanded to Los Angeles, London, Nashville, Amsterdam and, in February, Tokyo. But Downtown, based in Manhattan, remains dedicated to its indie roots. In 2011, Kalifowitz built Songtrust, an online platform that allows indie songwriters -- essentially anyone -- to register their compositions and collect royalties worldwide. While Downtown manages 100,000 songs, Songtrust administers 1.3 million, and the company reports collections were up 90 percent in 2016. Kalifowitz has also been working on NY is Music, the advocacy coalition he co-founded in 2014 that helped the NYC Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment commissioner Julie Menin organize the inaugural New York Music Month, a city-sponsored event this June that includes concerts, conferences, and initiatives like 2,000 hours of free rehearsal space. With the city's monthlong celebration underway, Kalifowitz speaks about overseas growth, indie songwriters and New York's music economy. Enjoy! Aaron Bethune.
