Foundations of Amateur Radio Launched into your amateur radio adventure you're faced with figuring out what you need to fly. If you have a web browser, you can start listening to a massive array of online radio sources .. today. Beyond that, a handheld radio is often the first purchase for a new amateur, more often than not followed by the acquisition of a more advanced radio and associated paraphernalia, antenna, coax, power supply and the like. A video of forging the "Most Iconic Swedish Axe", by Torbjorn Ahman, a Swedish Blacksmith, started off with making several tools, before the axe forging itself got underway. It reminded me that in the amateur radio community we often talk about radio with rarely any mention of any toolkit. Spend six seconds thinking about this and you'll likely come up with a soldering iron and a multimeter as your next investment, but what happens after that? While not universal, truth be told, my soldering iron has very little use, though half a century ago it was probably essential. My multimeter gets more use, even though it really doesn't do any radio tricks. Its most used feature is continuity testing. One proper bit of test gear is an antenna analyser that we use most times anyone plays with antennas. Several years ago, I was given a lovely NanoVNA which gets a regular workout though calibration is a bit cumbersome. I was also given an inline power meter that provides all manner of battery health information. I take it to every portable operation. Gadgets aside, the tools I use more than all of these put together are a quality wire cutter and an Anderson Powerpole crimper with all the connector housing colours. There's also a comprehensive set of screwdriver bits, enabling access to more equipment than I have time to investigate. A 15 Watt dummy load, good to 150 MHz, gets regular use, and to complete the picture, underneath my desk is a HP 606A signal generator that I'm scared to restore. Last time I went near it, I managed to trip the house RCD for reasons I still don't understand. There's other stuff in boxes and drawers, but I clearly don't use them enough to come to mind. Unremarked is my computing infrastructure. Until a couple of years ago that consisted of a 27" iMac, vintage 2015. Expanded to 64 GB of RAM, it ran all my software using VMware, sometimes a dozen or so virtual computers simultaneously. It died in 2024 when the power cord managed to short itself on my portable desk, yes, that too tripped the RCD. Although I didn't lose any data, due to a perfect storm of incompatibility, it's been nearly two years before I found the beginnings of a replacement, a small form factor Lenovo IdeaCentre with 32 GB of RAM running Proxmox. If I was made of money, I'd probably find space for an oscilloscope and a signal generator, perhaps even a proper network analyser, but truth be told, most of my adventures these days are in the software realm. That's not to say that there is no place for such gear, just that I suspect that they'd feel overwhelming rather than something I'd grab to solve a problem. That said, regular posts by Ismo OH2FTG about resurrecting all manner of broken testing equipment revealed to me that a surprising number of these tools are essentially a computer with an operating system, running some custom application that presents itself to the user via a display. Apparently you haven't lived until you see a Windows boot loop on your Agilent oscilloscope. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, the "HP 8920A RF Communications Test Set" that I played with a while back runs what looks like a version of DOS, which comes on ROM chips, according to HP taking 2 hours to replace for a firmware upgrade, and each of its in-built tests is a program written in HP Instrument BASIC. This morning I walked into my office and spotted my PlutoSDR on my desk. If you're unfamiliar, a PlutoSDR is a little box, blue, because of course colour matters, has two SMA coax connectors on one side and two USB sockets on the other side. One antenna port is marked "Rx", the other "Tx" and by connecting the two together, you can create a transmission and then receive it. While that sounds completely useless, it's the exact same set-up as any number of bits of test equipment, to be clear, normally you have something you're testing connected between the ports. Combine that with a connected computer and you have the makings of some fancy test gear, capable of 70 MHz to 6 GHz. Since it's all Open Source, you can write your code in your language of choice. Of course I'm not the first person to come to this point. There's tools around for making this reality, implementing oscilloscope, spectrum analyser and plenty more. I am already imagining what I might achieve with GNU Radio. While there's plenty of room for soldering irons in our community, I think it's also worth considering what software might help in your toolkit. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Andrew Goff threw a mug that said “Best teacher ever” at a wall. It was his twelfth year in the classroom, and the email that set it off came from someone he had counted as an ally. His second memoir, Shattered and Becoming: A Teacher's Journey Between Policy and Purpose, is about the year that followed.A new principal told Andrew he could not speak Spanish with the three-quarters of his pre-K class who spoke it. The policy did not actually say that, and Andrew found out too late to use it. Two boys in that classroom, both labeled with autism, both named David, were thriving with embedded supports. When Andrew brought the data, the answer was that it worked in his classroom but would not work in anyone else's. Both boys ended up in self-contained autism classrooms.Andrew will not let us make villains out of the people whose decisions caused that harm, and he explains why without letting anyone off the hook. We also get into designing curriculum for the margins, the not knowing mindset, and following the breadcrumbs after a fifteen-year federal grant is canceled by email. Meet Noah: The AI Robot Delivering Your Next Meal w/ Steve Burns of NoTip - AZ TRT S07 EP15 (297) 9-13-2026       What We Learned This Week Food delivery may be ready for a robotics makeover. NoTip is testing a model where an EV gets the food close to the customer's home and an autonomous robot completes the final delivery. The expensive part of a delivery isn't necessarily the food—it's the last mile. Restaurants and consumers can face significant costs from today's delivery model. NoTip is trying to use automation and EVs to change that equation. Physical AI is moving into the real world. LiDAR, cameras, GPS, sonar and RTK positioning allow robots to understand and navigate physical environments—not just digital ones. The EV revolution isn't just about cars. Purpose-built electric vehicles can be dramatically smaller and lighter than conventional cars, potentially changing the economics of businesses that operate fleets all day. The future of autonomous delivery may involve two vehicles—not one. The delivery vehicle gets the order to the neighborhood, while a smaller robot handles the final few yards to the front door. The company has spent approximately four years in stealth mode developing its technology. NoTip officially went live in the summer of 2026. The company's technology centers around Noah, an autonomous delivery robot built in-house. Noah is an example of what Steve describes as Physical AI—AI that doesn't just exist in software but interacts with the physical world. The company is essentially taking on the traditional food-delivery model represented by companies such as DoorDash and Uber Eats. Customers order through an app and pay before the delivery. Instead of a gig worker delivering the order, NoTip uses autonomous vehicles and robots. The initial focus is suburban food delivery. The basic proposition is simple: people are willing to pay for convenience. Steve uses Uber as an example of how consumers have demonstrated that they'll pay for convenience when the service solves a problem. NoTip's future delivery system combines: An autonomous EV Noah, the smaller autonomous robot The robot carrying the food from the vehicle to the customer's home The delivery vehicle can deploy the robot using a ramp. Noah uses a combination of: LiDAR Sonar GPS Cameras Mapping technology The robot has gone through thousands of modifications and improvements during development. Current testing includes a safety driver behind the wheel who can take over and make the delivery if the autonomous system encounters a problem. The Technology Business Steve points out the enormous valuations attached to technology-driven companies. DoorDash has reached a market capitalization far larger than many traditional vehicle manufacturers. His larger point: the software and technology layer can be more valuable than the physical vehicle itself. NoTip's concept is designed to be easy for consumers to understand: The delivery vehicle comes to your neighborhood. A small robot gets out. The robot takes your food to the door. Steve compares the concept to the familiar infrastructure of a UPS delivery fleet—but with autonomous technology replacing much of the human delivery process. Why Does Food Delivery Cost So Much? The NoTip Model NoTip plans to charge a flat $6 delivery fee. Traditional food-delivery services can charge restaurants significant fees, sometimes approaching 30%, depending on the arrangement. Those costs can ultimately be reflected in higher menu prices and delivery costs for consumers. Steve believes the current food-delivery model has become too expensive for restaurants, consumers and other participants in the food ecosystem. Automation could potentially change the economics of last-mile delivery. EV Economics Electric vehicles have substantially lower energy costs than gasoline-powered vehicles. Lower operating costs become particularly important in a delivery business where vehicles may operate for many hours every day. Amazon has already demonstrated the use of electric delivery vans through its Rivian fleet. NoTip is looking beyond conventional delivery vans toward smaller, purpose-built EVs. The Future NoTip Vehicle Steve envisions a future NoTip delivery vehicle that could be a three-wheel EV, more similar to a large motorcycle than a traditional automobile. The goal is to make the vehicle: Lightweight Efficient Less expensive to operate Purpose-built for delivery A lighter vehicle requires less energy to move, potentially helping reduce operating costs. Why Automation Could Matter Steve discusses some of the challenges and safety concerns associated with the current gig-worker delivery model. NoTip's objective is to create a delivery system that emphasizes consistency, safety and efficiency. The technology isn't simply about eliminating a driver—it is about redesigning the entire last-mile delivery process. Segment 2 — From EVs to Robots Steve Burns' EV Background Steve brings significant experience from the electric-vehicle industry. His background includes work with companies such as: Workhorse Lordstown Motors His experience gives him an understanding of: EV development Manufacturing Supply chains Automotive regulations Vehicle technology The challenges of bringing new transportation technology to market Lordstown Motors Steve discusses the bankruptcy of Lordstown Motors. He subsequently acquired intellectual property and physical assets from the company. That included EV-related assets and vehicles that could be useful in developing future technology. NoTip's Current Vehicles The company is experimenting with multiple prototype configurations. Some of the current vehicles are modified BMW i3s. These conventional vehicles weigh roughly 2,000 pounds. Steve discusses future vehicles that could be much lighter. One concept is approximately 1,500 pounds, including the battery. The battery system is designed to provide roughly 10 hours of operating time. Building the Robot Noah has gone through multiple prototype versions. The team has learned from putting the robots into real-world environments. One of the challenges is that a robot can't assume every customer's property looks the same. It needs to navigate things such as: Rakes Landscaping Driveways Sidewalks Other obstacles The robot can also be modified for different environments, including the use of snow tires for winter conditions. The Technology Behind Noah Noah combines several technologies to understand its environment. Sensors LiDAR Sonar Cameras GPS Optical sensors The vehicle and robot use these systems to understand and map their surroundings. RTK — Real-Time Kinematic Positioning Steve discusses RTK, or Real-Time Kinematic positioning. The technology can dramatically improve location accuracy and allow the system to map an area with extremely high precision—down to approximately the centimeter level under suitable conditions. That matters when a robot needs to know: "Exactly where am I on this property?" rather than simply: "I'm somewhere near this address." A Bigger Robotics Trend Steve points out that similar technology is being used in other industries. One example is autonomous robotic lawnmowers. As sensors, computing power and other components become less expensive, technologies that once required expensive R&D can become commercially practical. NoTip is essentially applying some of those technologies to food delivery. Segment 3 - How Does an Autonomous Delivery Actually Work? Getting to the House Google Maps can be used to determine the vehicle's driving route. The vehicle handles the trip from the restaurant to the customer's neighborhood. The robot then handles the final portion of the delivery on the customer's property. Current Regulatory Approach During the current testing phase, there is still a driver behind the wheel of the autonomous vehicle. This allows NoTip to operate within the existing regulatory framework while testing its autonomous technology. The robot itself operates on the customer's property after receiving permission. Customer Permission Customers agree to allow the robot onto their property through the NoTip app. The system can collect information such as: Email address Phone number Property permission This creates a defined interaction between the customer and the autonomous delivery system. What's Next for NoTip? NoTip is currently testing and refining its technology. The company expects to continue improving both the robot and the vehicle platform. Future plans include: Additional cities Purpose-built EVs More autonomous robots Expanded manufacturing capabilities Steve discusses eventually building a 22,000-square-foot facility for manufacturing and development. That facility could support production of the company's three-wheel EV and robotic delivery systems. Phoenix is one city Steve has identified as a potential future market. NoTip expects to announce its next city in fall 2026. The Bigger Idea The roads and delivery infrastructure already exist. Consumers already: Order food through apps Pay electronically Expect delivery Pay for convenience The question becomes: Can technology make the last mile faster, safer and less expensive? Enbridge is buying Tallgrass Energy's crude oil transportation business for $2.55 billion. The deal includes a 75% stake in the 1,050-mile Pony Express Pipeline system, which connects oil production in the Rockies to Cushing and provides access to about 500 Mb/d of refining capacity.

Industry executive surveys in Q2 2026 and observations by oil service firms all reflect an optimism that suggests producers are warming to increasing activity to boost oil and gas output. The key question is whether that has translated into higher investment.

Most conversations about starting a systems integrator skip the parts that sink people. Dave and Vlad spend this one on insurance, licenses and procurement.After a month of founder interviews, Dave and Vlad close the series with their own experience. Vlad started at plant level with Procter and Gamble and Kraft Heinz, deciding how outside integrators would execute, before crossing over to work for an integrator across food and beverage and CPG packaging. Dave came from aviation and aerospace through a German machine builder and a distributor, then ran a small integration company doing MES, OEE and track and trace. Both reached the same conclusion. Integration starts after the requirements are written, so you quote to a spec and a budget, build the thing, and real handover rarely follows.Blame does not sit in one place. Vlad puts it plainly: people resent a solution that has not actually solved something for them. But end users say they do not need training and ask for the lowest number, and training is the first line cut. Dave counters that if a customer wants five dashboards on an ugly six inch HMI that has sat in the plant for fifteen years, that is the job. Vlad's answer is that your time is finite, and a year on work you cannot show anyone positions you as the person who does that work.The technical centerpiece is a migration that sounds nearly free. Moving from RSView 32 to FactoryTalk View gets justified because conversion tools exist. Then come the undocumented Visual Basic scripts written around tag limits on old controllers, which no conversion tool touches. Then the PLCs will not support the new terminals and servers, so the controllers go too. Then the networks underneath, often Data Highway Plus. Then servers, remote racks, IO, sensors and drives. Vlad argues these decisions get made by people who never price the second and third order effects.An integration firm is a service firm, billing time and materials or a fixed fee, with a markup on hardware and software. Vlad quotes roughly $200 a month for $2 million of liability coverage, a capable laptop, and software licenses reaching tens of thousands of dollars per seat without preferential pricing, usually several across PLC and HMI programming. Then procurement, which nobody warns new integrators about. Dave has cleared it in twenty minutes and has waited seven months, three or four of those with lawyers arguing over a master service agreement.Vlad closes on complexity. Industrial equipment no longer ships with a full schematic and a six dollar replacement sensor, so ramp up time climbs while the population who understand electrical, mechanical and process together shrinks as the best of them retire. Dave sees it from the other side. When we're looking at hybrid workspaces, the emphasis should not just be on where people are working from, but also on how their communication ecosystem is organised. "Communication Repertoires in Hybrid Office Work: Mediated Channels, Face-to-Face Interaction, and Formal and Informal Exchange." SocArXiv preprint. https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/skupm_v1 A communication repertoire is the patterned combination of media people use in their work. The study captures this through employees' reported communication frequency across five modes: email, chat, telephone, video conferencing and face-to-face interaction. The concept shifts attention away from individual channels and towards how the modes are combined, including both overall communication frequency and its distribution across those modes.
