Happy 2025, everyone, and welcome to the first episode of the new year! This year for 2025, I am not just making a list of tasks to check off but am also envisioning the life I want by December 31st, 2025! Inspired by my business coach, I am focusing on creating a vision rather than just tasks. It's a lot like planning a trip in that you need to know where you're headed before mapping out the route!Tune in as I share how reflecting on this year made me realize that it is truly a pivotal one, reminding me of setting my vision for 2020 despite COVID-19 uncertainties. It is really about deciding whether to let life happen or actively shape it.I also talk about a couple of books that have really shaped my thinking - The Good-Enough Life by Avram Alpert and The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter - books that have both caused me to question our pursuit of more (more money, more stuff) and the comfort that shelters us from real challenges. Is more truly better, or does it just bring more problems?I explore the philosophy of living a "good enough" life and confronting the comfort that might be holding us back, and I also introduce you to my word for 2025: curiosity. Inspired by Brian Grazer's new book, I am truly embracing curiosity as a way to break free from my comfort zone and the lies that fear tends to create. This mindset shift is about being open to new experiences, even if they challenge or scare me.I really hope that you will join me for this episode of the show as I share my journey of setting a vision for 2025, pushing past comfort, and embracing curiosity! This episode is about self-reflection, growth, and figuring out how to live a life that's not just comfortable but meaningful!Time Stamps:[1:17] - I created a list of tasks for 2025 but ultimately focused on my end-of-year vision.[4:32] - Reflecting on big life decisions, I have realized the need to shape my vision for 2025.[7:13] - I contemplate whether to enjoy my current life or reinvest for future growth[9:54] - Modern conveniences contribute to a sheltered, under-challenged lifestyle.[11:41] - Listen as I question if comfort in life and business has led to a lack of challenges.[12:26] - Compulsive activity often distracts from addressing real issues in life.[14:01] - I discuss how life becomes a never-ending checklist, and satisfaction remains elusive as desires grow.[15:17] - Embracing curiosity and moving beyond your comfort zone help form the vision for a meaningful life.[17:14] - Fear comes before experience which limits growth by lowering the threshold for what constitutes a problem.[18:11] - Disrupting one's comfort zone and embracing curiosity are so important for growth.[22:40] - I close by arguing that success requires accepting failure and overcoming obstacles that are rooted in fear and lies.Resources:The Accidental Leader - Websiteyournarketing.cobo@yourmarketingco.comBo McDonald on LinkedInAvram Alpert - The Good-Enough LifeMichael Easter - The Comfort CrisisBrian Grazer & Charles Fishman - A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life

Is our obsession with optimization actually making us weaker?  In this episode of the Habits and Hustle podcast, I am joined by Michael Easter, author of "The Comfort Crisis" and "Scarcity Brain," to explore how modern society's relentless pursuit of wellness and optimization might be backfiring.  We discuss the possibility that the more requirements we add to basic human functions (like sleeping, exercising, or working), the more fragile we become. We also dive into elaborate morning routines, sleep-tracking devices, how subtraction, not addition, might be the key to building real resilience in our overly-comfortable world, and the best way to end a day of intellectual work.  Michael Easter has made a career as a New York Times bestselling author by traveling the world to uncover practical ideas that help people live healthier, happier, and more remarkable lives. His research spans from war zones to the Arctic to the Bolivian jungle, where he's interviewed thousands of experts including Nobel laureates and world-class athletes. “We’re having less enjoyable travel experiences, even as our photos show us having this amazing time, because we’re performing a version of travel for people who aren’t even there.” In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and David talk about the time-honored Americans pretending to be Canadian on the road, and why Americans at times have had a bad reputation abroad (2:30); strategies for avoiding becoming an “Ugly American” on the road (11:00); how a fixation with comfort can get in the way of life-enriching experiences on the road (18:30); how rituals like tipping, interacting with children, or choosing what to wear in public from culture to culture (22:00); how “voluntourism” and charity on the part of travelers is often not as selfless or effective as it pretends to be (30:00); how social media has a way of turning us into superficial, image-obsessed travelers (34:00); and how technology has transformed (and constrained) the way we all travel (39:00). Read our book, The Score That Matters https://amzn.to/3XxHi7p Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Michael Easter's investigations have taken him to meet with monks in ancient monasteries in Bhutan, lost tribes in the jungles of Bolivia, US Special Forces soldiers in undisclosed locations, gene scientists in Iceland, CEOs in Fortune-500 boardrooms, and more. He's a professor at UNLV and he's the best-selling author of The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain. “The modern world is designed for short-term survival and pleasure. It is not set up to help us thrive in the long term.” “Have fun, don't die, read books, and do strange things.” Be a 2 percenter. 98% of people do the easy thing. We are programmed to do the easy thing. The world was uncomfortable a while ago... It makes sense to do the easy thing. You get the short-term reward for it. Handle adversity, adapt, do the slightly harder thing Some ideas: do walking meetings, work in silence, embrace hunger, don't cut corners, pick up the trash, call people on the phone. Ruck the airport. Don't sit down, walk. Read while exercising. Workout outside. Sprint. Lift weights. The ability to move a limb quickly is what helps old people not fall. Need to be powerful and springy to move quickly (and not fall). Diet - One ingredient foods. Tribe in Bolivia with the healthiest hearts in the world. Be outside, eat one ingredient foods. Scarcity brain - We all suck at moderation. We overconsume... Casinos, slot machines. Quick, repeatable, predictable. The speed makes it powerful. Silicon Valley learned this from casinos and it's how they build their apps. The smartphone withdrawal effect. Worse in short term. Better in the long term. Break bad habits - Slow down. Respond, don't react. Wait 72 hours to buy the thing in your online cart. Junk food is super easy to eat fast. It was designed that way. Your body doesn't know it's full because of the speed. What did Michael learn from a tribe in a Bolivian jungle? They seemed very happy. What did they do? They ate single-ingredient food. They spent a lot of time outside. And they spent a lot of time together. What can we learn from that? Eat healthy, go outside, and spend time with people you love. “A lot of problems are not our fault, but they are our problems to solve.” Remember, we are wired to choose the escalator, fast food or to cut the corner. We need to be intentional in taking the stairs, slowing down, and responding instead of reacting. How the scarcity loop works: It has three parts: opportunity, unpredictable rewards, and quick repeatability. Becoming aware of it can help you fall into it less often. Michael has been sober for 9 years. His drinking addiction stemmed from having a boring life (job he didn't like). Needed to explore the edges. Booze did that for him. Iraq - Sandstorm. We don't read books here. We don't have that luxury. We have too many problems to deal with. In America, we live in a country where we can read books.

Episode 494 - Discomfort = Good   Today we have Erin. She is 47 years old from Colorado and took her last drink on May 21st, 2022.   Sponsors for this episode:   Visit Better Help today to get 10% off your first month   Café RE – promo code OPPORTUNITY waives set up fee.   [02:53] Thoughts from Paul:   Paul shares with us “pain is followed by pleasure and pleasure is followed by pain”. Drinking to change the way you feel in order to feel better in the short term, will lead to a greater dip on the other side. Not only does drinking often come with a physical hangover, but the dopamine dip can be even worse.   The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter is a great book on discomfort. The main point of the comfort crisis is to show that society's relentless quest for pleasure is actually doing us a tremendous amount of harm.   The discomfort that comes with ditching the booze is like a different type of gym that is making you so much stronger. Studies show that it was not uncommon for our ancestors to run and walk more than 25 miles in a day. Today we call that a marathon. They called it going out for dinner. A good sobriety tool to add to your toolkit is seeking discomfort – both the physical and the mental.    Buddha said that life is suffering, and all attempts to avoid the suffering only create more suffering. Logging alcohol free days and leaning into the boredom and discomfort is incredibly healthy for you and is actually level 10 self-care, even though it hurts.   [09:57] Kris introduces Erin:   Erin lives in a small town in Colorado. She is a psychotherapist. She lives with her partner and two dogs. They enjoy all things outdoors; hiking, skiing, walking, going to the lake and she is fortunate to love her work as well.   Growing up in a small town in South Dakota, Erin says drinking was part of the youth culture. Her older siblings drank and made it sound like fun. The first time Erin drank, she blacked out, but doesn't recall it being a bad experience. She drank at parties in high school, but her drinking slowed down when she went to college.   Living in Boulder, CO, Erin enjoyed more outdoor activities instead of drinking heavily. Her roommate and she got the opportunity to go on tour with their favorite band a few times and Erin remembers that as being when drinking was fun. She was a music lover and while working in clubs she enjoyed the perk of free drinks and meeting the bands.   In her late 20s, Erin had a career change and was with a partner that drank a lot. She says she drank a lot with them and was able to maintain her job and her martial arts training. She was working with women that came from domestic abuse situations so in comparison, she thought she was doing alright.   Erin ended up leaving the martial arts community but began drinking with her work community. Everyone else was able to drink Friday night and be done, whereas Erin wouldn't stop until Monday. She started having withdrawal symptoms when the bender was over, but this wasn't enough to make her quit.   Erin would try moderation and kept her drinking to a minimum when with her boyfriend, but it was different when she was alone. It wasn't until a bender while pet sitting that her boyfriend saw her in really rough shape. He made her leave with him and the next morning, Erin asked to go to the hospital because she knew it was time to quit for good.   Once Erin quit, she focused on telling the truth and surrendering to the fact that she could no longer drink. Erin has leaned into community and is going to retreats. It gives her something to look forward to on her calendar.   Erin's favorite resources in recovery – podcasts and other people's stories   Erin's parting piece of guidance – there's a wisdom in patience, and simplicity. Do one or two things each day that are good for yourself. Sobriety is a journey and the brain is healing.   We are the only ones that can do this RE, but we don't have to do it alone. I love you guys.   RE on Instagram Recovery Elevator YouTube Sobriety Tracker iTunes
