There's a ton of controversy around the use of A.I. in the classroom. The New York Times just published an article effectively saying that indiscriminate dumping of A.I. resources into the California State University system was no good, while at the same time (now Dr.) Robert Ramji and I were teaching using an A.I. tutor based on a book that we ourselves wrote (Intro to Nanoengineering, Royal Society of Chemistry). We found that the results were mixed and the students' engagement with the tutor and their feelings about it were determined by how its use was framed by the instructors. Robert, along with myself and my colleague David Fenning, wrote an article about our experiences with the tutor in Chemistry of Materials. Here, I contrast some of the findings with those of the NY Times article.Robert Ramji, David Fenning, Darren Lipomi: Chemistry of Materials articlehttps://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.chemmater.6c00883New York Times articlehttps://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/01/magazine/ai-university-college-california.html?smid=url-shareFirst, please consider supporting my public advocacy for science by purchasing my book, from $9.99 and up, here:https://a.co/d/0akwfp3y Available for free for Spotify subscribers here:https://open.spotify.com/show/3uEY9jOwopxCyZ6DHAFkLE?si=23d46c1752bb419e

About the Episode What if the most powerful tool for fighting social isolation wasn't a program, a PowerPoint, or a policy — but a meal shared around a kitchen table? In this episode of Do Local Good, host Yawa Idi sits down with Kathryn Way from Alberta Parenting for the Future Association (APFA) to explore how cultural cooking is breaking down barriers and building belonging in the Tri-region. Together, they unpack how a kitchen and the simple act of sharing a meal — can become a catalyst for community connection, mental health, and youth empowerment. The conversation digs into APFA's “Stir It Up” cultural cooking program, which uses food as a vehicle for youth development, cross-cultural connection, and mental health skill-building. From learning patience while waiting for dough to rise, to standing beside someone from a completely different background and laughing about cake pops, the kitchen becomes a place where young people discover confidence, accountability, and a genuine sense of purpose. The discussion also explores how the program reaches Indigenous youth, newcomer families, and kids with diverse needs, weaving in Elders, the Seven Sacred Teachings, and a community fridge that gives youth a sense of contribution. In a region where rural isolation is real and resources are stretched, APFA is showing that something as simple as a recipe can spark massive change. This episode invites listeners to reconsider what youth programming can look like when it starts with belonging rather than curriculum — and asks: What becomes possible when we give young people a seat at the table? Featured Programs and Resources Alberta Parenting for the Future Association (APFA) Alberta Parenting for the Future Association (APFA) has been strengthening family connections in the Tri-Municipal Area for 30 years. Based at the Family Connection Centre in Stony Plain and serving Spruce Grove, Parkland County, As a Provincial Family Resource Network and the Hub for the Tri-Region, APFA offers free programs for children and families from birth to age 24 — including parent workshops, infant and early childhood programs, support groups, and child and youth programs. Through the Family Connection Centre and with funding from the United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, APFA also runs food rescue initiatives, a youth mental health cooking programming. Learn More → https://www.apfa.ca/ Stir It Up — Youth Mental Health Cooking Program Stir It Up is APFA's youth mental health cooking program for grades 6–12, following the Healthy Together evidence-based model and drawing on the wisdom of Community Kitchens as natural gathering spaces. Each week, youth participate in an activity of their choice, a group discussion, and a food component — building protective factors for youth and their families as the kitchen becomes a space where young people develop confidence, accountability, patience, and genuine connections with peers from diverse backgrounds. The learning that happens together around food translates directly into basic life skills that support youth in going from surviving to thriving. The design of the program supports newcomer youth, Indigenous youth and those with disabilities. Learn More → https://www.apfa.ca/ Food Rescue Program Every Wednesday, APFA's Food Rescue Program provides free food to families across Parkland County, Stony Plain, and Spruce Grove — no registration required, open to anyone. Food is sourced from the local food bank and distributed at the Family Connection Centre. The program is also woven into the Stir It Up cooking series, where youth prepare and package meals for the community fridge, connecting them directly to the real impact of their work. Volunteers are always welcome to help with food rescue days and packaging. Learn More → https://www.apfa.ca/ Join the Movement  Get Involved with GenNEXT  United Way's GenNEXT is a volunteer-led initiative designed to inspire the next generation of leaders to drive meaningful change in our community. Learn More → https://www.myunitedway.ca/take-action/join-a-group/gennext/ Special Acknowledgment  Thank you to Kathryn Way from Alberta Parenting for the Future Association for sharing your story, your experience, and your deep commitment to youth and community. We also extend our appreciation to the entire APFA team for your continued commitment to serving families across the Tri-Municipal Area with creativity, care, and cultural humility, and for partnering with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region to strengthen support systems for youth and families. To every listener, thank you for tuning in and for continuing to champion what it means to do local good in our communities. Land Acknowledgment This episode was recorded in Edmonton, Alberta, on Treaty Six Territory and the Métis Nation of Alberta North Saskatchewan River Territory. We acknowledge that this land has long served as a meeting place, gathering ground, and travel route for the diverse Indigenous Peoples who have called it home for generations. These include the nêhiyawak (Cree), Blackfoot, Dene, Anishinaabe (Saulteaux), Nakota Sioux, Inuit, and Métis. We are deeply grateful for the resources, knowledge, and culture shared by Indigenous communities, as we walk together on the path toward reconciliation. We honour and respect their contributions, which help guide our work to ensure no one in our community is left behind.

What if the thing holding back justice isn't lack of will — it's lack of access?  Today's guest is doing something about that after coming up from a really rough time in high school, a near-fatal car crash, a parent who believed in him endlessly, and ending up not only at Stanford Law but also with one of the most powerful mentors in the field of law. For those of you who - like Sara - have liked to tease lawyers for being miserable people with secret languages, this episode brings the absolute best in the field to rehabilitate that image, infuse us with hope and humanity, and remind us that, even if we're not lawyers, there is a LOT we can each do to make the world a better place.   What to listen for: Transformation is rarely linear — and patience is the secret ingredient. And a message for parents of struggling teens: believe in them relentlessly, even when they make it hard, because knowing someone is in your corner can be the difference that keeps a young person from going over the edge. Mentorship is a two-way street. Luke describes his decades-long relationship with trailblazing attorney Harry Bremond, who shaped him both professionally and personally — but he's clear that great mentorship requires great mentees. Showing up, being reliable, and genuinely investing in the relationship is what transforms a professional connection into a lasting legacy. You don't have to be a lawyer to fight for justice in your community. There is so much we can each do in our communities to create tangible change, even volunteering for a few hours. And mentally? Luke says it's important to be good to yourself and allow yourself and others grace. Go on and find the joy in life while we're living it!   About our guest: Luke Liss is the Pro Bono Partner of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. He manages the firm's global Community Impact program. Luke also actively leads multiple pro bono impact litigation and immigration teams.  Luke has also played a key leadership role in high-profile pro bono litigation, including a trial win on behalf of one of the largest classes of Medicare patients in history, a historic win on summary judgment against a former Colombian paramilitary war lord on behalf of family members of a murdered community activist, and the settlement of a civil rights lawsuit alleging constitutional violations in Louisiana. Luke remains active in the leadership of multiple ongoing impact litigation matters.

Audrey became Taiwan's former Digital Minister after she hacked the government to turn around a trade deal with China. The result was so ridiculously effective that, instead of arresting her, they gave her a gig in the government! During her 8-year tenure, she engaged almost half the country in co-creating democratic policies through technology. The upshot? Trust in the government went from 9% to a peak of 91% during the pandemic.I've asked Audrey to join us to answer this wild question that burns for many of us:Is it still possible to save AI – and ourselves - from technofascist doom? And what would it look like?About AudreyAudrey Tang is an activist hacker and was the first Digital Minister of Taiwan (and the world's first transgender government minister), instrumental in shaping Taiwan's internationally acclaimed COVID-19 response and in safeguarding the 2024 presidential and legislative elections from foreign cyber interference. How Relational Hospitality Builds Belonging About the Episode What if community care felt less like an appointment and more like coming home?  In this episode of Do Local Good, host Vasu sits down with Omar, Ibrahim, and Ali from IslamicFamily (IFSSA) to explore how relational hospitality is reshaping support across the Edmonton community. Together, they share how the organization centres relationships over transactions in its approach to community care. From thoughtfully designed spaces that reduce stress and foster trust, to delivering services in multiple languages that meet newcomers where they are, the conversation highlights how environment and approach directly influence outcomes. The team shares how Empower U moves beyond short-term assistance by equipping participants with culturally relevant financial literacy to help break cycles of poverty.  The discussion also explores The Green Room, a youth initiative designed as a “third space” — not school, not mosque, not home — but a welcoming environment where young people can explore identity, faith, and community without judgment. In a time marked by increasing isolation, these relational spaces do more than provide services; they cultivate belonging.  This episode invites listeners to reconsider what effective social services look like and asks: What becomes possible when care is rooted in relationship rather than transaction? Featured Programs and Resources IslamicFamily IslamicFamily supports individuals and families in the Edmonton area through compassionate, culturally sensitive care that helps the whole person flourish. What does it really take to build an ethical supply chain from the ground up? In this show, we learn from one of the very best. Note: Shows are never sponsored, ie companies paying us to appear on the show. An ad is an ad, and the show is the show. I'm publishing this because we all need to believe there are companies out there with mounting proof of concept that you can design for a better world through business. In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Gero Leson, an accomplished physicist and environmental scientist who has worked for some of the biggest companies in the world and then met David Bronner, CEO of Dr Bronner's. David implored him to join Dr Bronner's in the early 2000's, on a mission to build an ethical supply chain of the highest standards. We explore how one of the world's most values-led companies approaches transparency, cross-cultural leadership and business ethics in practice - not just in marketing.Gero shares how Dr Bronner's moved beyond buying ingredients on the open market, moved beyond labels and just ‘trusting it was fine because it sounds good'. They've built companies that farm and produce the raw materials that they use for their famous soaps and other products, as well as selling the raw materials to other brands seeking a fully transparent and ethical, regenerative supply chain. They've done this in Sri Lanka, Ghana, India and beyond. From creating fair-trade supply chains where none had existed to the standard they wanted to uphold, to investing in regenerative agroforestry, community education and healthcare. This is business as a vehicle for agency and dignity. We discuss:Why radical transparency is becoming the antidote to consumer distrustHow ethical sourcing is not about fixing one issue, but committing to long-term engagementThe power of leadership teams over heroic individual leadersWhy dignity and agency motivate teams more than rules and controlThe balance between efficiency and humanity in global businessThis conversation is not idealistic. It is grounded, complex and honest about the challenges. But it is also deeply hopeful. Gero says, “We joke about saving the world with soap but in a way, it's true”. If you have ever wondered whether business can truly be a force for good, this episode offers real-world proof that it can - when values are embedded at every level.Enjoy the show, Alexx Stuart, your host. Sometimes it was loud.Shame around sex. Guilt about desire. Fear about who we are, how we love, or whether we even belong in a church at all.  Sadly, this list could go on forever. And that is still in us: the leftover voices, rules, and fears that still follow us, long after we've left those traditions behind. This isn't about defending Christianity—or tearing it down. It's about telling the truth: that religion is powerful. They collaborate, they organize, and they care deeply.Fan communities are savvy. They are smart. And when they are invited in, they create extraordinary momentum.Adam Met, best known as the “A” of indie-pop band AJR, believes that this kind of energy can extend far beyond concerts or comment sections. What if we harnessed that same passion, creativity, imagination, and sense of belonging to improve the communities we live in?Adam has spent years studying how to move people from curiosity to action. He's also a climate activist, the founder of the nonprofit Planet Reimagined, an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and the author of the bestselling book Amplify: How to Use the Power of Connection to Engage, Take Action, and Build a Better World. In our conversation, Adam explains how the same principles that make music meaningful - ownership, storytelling, participation, and belonging - can be applied to social movements, civic engagement, and climate action, to name a few. From designing fan-first concert experiences to rethinking how we engage people around complex issues, Adam argues that emotion is the engine of progress. This episode isn't really about music. And it's not really about climate either. It's about how we bring people together, help them feel invested, and create experiences that inspire them to act. This… is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------To buy Adam's book Amplify: How to Use the Power of Connection to Engage, Take Action, and Build a Better World, head to: https://www.adammet.net/amplifyIf you want to learn more about Adam's climate work, check out: https://www.planetreimagined.comAnd don't forget to stream AJR's latest EP, What No One's Thinking: https://www.ajrbrothers.com---------------------------

This week on Golf & Politics, Matt and Rob finally return — and they're breaking down one of the coolest traditions in corporate golf: The Majority Cup (MG Cup). What started as a small outing among friends has grown into a 14–year legacy of competitive golf, meaningful relationships, and major impact. Hosted at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia and Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, the MG Cup brings together clients, friends, and family to raise money for pediatric cancer through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. This year's event generated more than $50,000 — and the stories behind the shots, the swag, and the people are what make this outing truly special. Matt and Rob also talk:

Recently, First Lady Melania Trump convened the second White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence in Education. There is simultaneously an incredible amount of excitement around AI in schools and just beneath it, a sort of terror about its potential impacts and all we do not know. We wanted to take a macro approach and examine the current state of AI in education, its promise, the fears, and what the near future may look like. The Questions:Is AI in the classroom a force for good? Can we still produce critical thinkers in an AI-driven classroom? Will AI just be another ed tech flash in the pan?To have this conversation, we brought together two leading eduction experts with nuanced, divergent views on the roles technology, and AI specifically, should play for teachers and students.Eric Westendorf is a former principal who founded the ed tech company LearnZillion, and now is the co-CEO of Coursemojo, which is using AI to enhance in-class learning by supporting teachers in providing the right support for every student.Justin Reich is an Associate Professor in Comparative Media Studies and Director at MIT Teaching Systems Lab, and is the author of a new book, Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can't Transform Education. Two notes on terms. Our guests mention NAEP: the National Assessment of Education Progress. There's also discussion of the Alpha School: a network of US private schools that combines AI-driven adaptive software for core academics with in-person adult “Guides” who act as mentors. It operates in Texas, Florida, Arizona, and California. According to Alpha School, their combination of technology and mastery based learning allows children learn core subjects in just two hours daily. Questions or comments about this episode? Now the CEO and co-founder of Align Impact, Jennifer leads a registered investment advisory firm managing over $750 million.    Jennifer joins Sarah Lockwood to talk about values-based investing, conscious capitalism, and how we can all, regardless of portfolio size, be more intentional about where and how our money is working. Unlock a deeper understanding of envy as we are guided through its dual nature with wisdom and insight. Discover how envy can be both a destructive force and a catalyst for personal growth. By reflecting on biblical stories like the serpent's jealousy and Cain's murder of Abel, we illustrate the perilous path envy can lead us down. However, he also sheds light on the other side of the coin, where healthy competition in Torah study and good deeds transforms envy into a powerful motivator for self-improvement and spiritual advancement. The conversation progresses into the realm of good deeds, focusing on the power of charity and the intentions behind it. We are reassured that even when acts of kindness are performed with self-serving motives, they remain valuable contributions to the world. As we engage more in these acts, we may find our intentions shifting towards genuine altruism, creating a ripple effect of generosity and compassion. Join us for an inspiring discussion on how redirecting envy and embracing good deeds can lead to profound personal and spiritual growth, ultimately enhancing our ability to contribute positively to the world._____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)Recorded from a live audience presentation in the TORCH Centre - Levin Family Studios (B) in Houston, Texas on February 3, 2025.Released as Podcast on June 4, 2025_____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In late March, thousands of writers, publishers, students, and writing educators gathered in Los Angeles for the Association of Writers and Writing Programs annual conference. Since our own Ben Jackson is a writer and professor of composition, we thought it would be a great opportunity to hear how writing is changing the world for the better in a time when we desperately need to change the world for the better.

Send us a textWhen does a human begin to exist? Students at major universities across the United States of America have difficulty committing to an answer to this question. Still, it isn't because they are dumb but because they are invested in the issue, just as cotton farmers were invested in slavery. Like the slave trade, the abortion issue will never go away until the hearts of the American people begin to see the violence of abortion. Today, I am on the campus of Clemson University with the Genocide Awareness Project, asking students whether or not they support the most significant modern-day genocide. But my interlocutor refuses to commit to a definition marker of humanity. To see CBR's images, visit: ➡️ https://abortionno.org/❤️ SHOW YOUR SUPPORT - LINKS BELOW...➡️ Email me: https://www.karlgessler.com/contact➡️ DONATE ➡️  Join our team!https://www.givesendgo.com/karlgesslerfamilybandhttps://www.patreon.com/karlgesslerhttps://cash.app/$KarlgesslerSocial Media➡️Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089357625739➡️Telegram - https://t.me/FaithoftheFathers➡️Truth Social - https://truthsocial.com/@UCLOvq6O4aIXLrkKxwXkq3uA#abortionban #abolition #abolitionist #humanity #prolifegenerationSupport the show
