In this episode of the Out and Back podcast, Abby and Shanty catch up with Segal to learn how he redefines what’s possible in climbing and how he juggles sports with running a business.

Josh sits down with Alpine Start founder Matt Segal. Alpine Start is a coffee brand offering an incredibly delicious instant coffee that will change the game of mornings in the backcountry. As a pro climber (and coffee enthusiast) Segal has spent his fair share of days drinking instant coffee. It wouldn't be until he drank one too many rough cups of coffee to make him seek out a better option. Within the span of six months from the idea of conception, he partnered with Alex Hanifin and spent over a year of drinking just about every other instant coffee brand to better their scope on the instant coffee market and really fine-tune what they were looking for. After becoming experts in the instant coffee world and having their product perfected a year later, it wasn't long before their took off landing themselves on the shelves of REI.
I had you at coffee, didn't I? Something about coffee taps into a universal language for so many of us hard-chargers who reach for a caffeine kick instead of considering that we may just need to back off and recharge sometimes. Alex Hanifin is no stranger to the concept of hard-charging. She is scrappy. She is smart. She is accomplished well beyond her years. She is the 28 year old founder of a company that is changing the world. The world of coffee. You’ll get the sense immediately that I know Alex. I do. I met her through a CEO group I participate in and immediately sensed that I was in the presence of someone who was meant to do big things. Alex started her first real business in high school. She didn’t go to college, but it wasn’t because she wasn’t smart or driven. She is in fact one of the smartest and most driven women I know. She just struggled in school and that environment stifled her instead of helping her grow. So she trusted her gut and her heart to lead her down her path to happiness. Today we talk about: The importance of health: "If you're not healthy, your business is not healthy" How what our parents say and do matters Her unique path to entrepreneurship Starting a business in high school Talking your way into a job when you have no idea what you're doing! Listening to your gut Alpine Start coffee: How much love and care goes into her business And more Happiness is a brand that is kicking serious ass and completely blowing open a really old, crotchety category – instant coffee. It's called Alpine Start and is making the most delicious, high quality coffee – it’s just such a great surprise when you have your first sip. Instant coffee doesn’t have to suck! Alex is offering you 50% off online at alpinestartfoods.com. Use code skirtsports. Definitely try their original Instant Coffee, the new dirty chai latte or coconut creamer latte – so good. If you are a supporter of women-led business ventures, forward this one. And if you want to actually SEE Alex in person, check out the Skirt Sports website. I talked her into modeling this season. She has such incredible energy I wanted to capture it! All right then, let’s chug some more coffee and get out and move your body because you know what time it is. It’s time to get out and run this world! Have a great workout and I’ll see you next week!
At 28-years-old, Alex Hanifin is a rock star in the natural foods industry. Just two years ago she and her business partner pooled together $25,000-every cent they owned- to co-found Alpine Start Foods, a premium brand of instant coffee that has been something of an overnight success. The single serving instant coffee can already be found on the shelves of grocery stores including Whole Foods and sporting goods stores like REI. "This isn't your grandma's coffee," the Boulder, Colorado native quips in describing the brand, which uses high quality beans and a special roasting process to produce gourmet flavors like Coconut Creamer and Dirty Chai Latte. Listen in as Alex, who didn't get into a single college she applied to, shares the story of how she built her career simply by asking lots of questions, networking like crazy and, yeah you guessed it: breaking the rules.

Growing up, Matt was an unlikely candidate to become a professional climber. Mostly because the southern beaches of Florida were his home. However, early on he showed promising climbing ability and began competing all over the country and world. After moving out to Colorado he began doing things very few climbers were doing, garnering the attention of The North Face. He signed with them and did climbs and expeditions all over the world. Noticing the lack of quality coffee on the market for backcountry sports, Matt’s mind began working. When back home in Colorado he would experiment with instant coffee combinations until he was satisfied. After talking his sister and some friends into going in with him, they started Alpine Start, the premier instant coffee for backpackers, climbers, and anyone in the adventure sports world. Today we’re talking to Matt about his story and how he balancing life on the rock and life in the business world.
