Send us a textWhat does it take to choose the mountains when a different calling has your heart? We sit with Arc'teryx athlete Emma Cook-Clarke for a candid, high-altitude conversation about identity, risk, and the rare joy of sustainable excellence. Emma reflects on a season loaded with contrasts—top 10 in the world at the uphill and a historic team bronze for Canada, a Speedgoat podium in a record-fast year, and the sting of missing Olympic SkiMo qualification—then walks us through how she's rebuilding momentum by staying grounded in Canmore and training by feel.Emma's path didn't start on talus. Gymnastics built composure, rugby taught grit and trust, and running unlocked freedom. A local uphill challenge during the pandemic revealed world-class climbing talent and led to her Arc'teryx partnership—support that feels like true professionalism: wellness first, smart planning, and access to specialists. We dig into her decision to step away from structural firefighting, drawing clear lines from the fireground to the backcountry: risk a lot to save a lot, fight complacency, and communicate with purpose. That same mindset shows up on technical ridges, at chaotic VK starts, and when the watch tries to drown out intuition. You'll hear a tactical breakdown of World Champs VK strategy, the team dynamics behind Canada's first-ever medal, and a pacing masterclass from Speedgoat—altitude, heat, and humility yielding a steady engine and a late-race surge. We also celebrate the soul of skyrunning at Meet the Minotaur, where handbuilt trails and scree descents keep adventure alive, and we talk Rockies reality: bear spray, smart route choices, and a rare, unforgettable wolverine sighting that reminds us to look up and simply watch. If you're an athlete navigating big goals, a fan of skyrunning and SkiMo, or someone weighing a hard life pivot, Emma's story offers a clear compass: protect your joy, respect risk, and let the mountains reshape what success looks like. E-SKIMO: Electric Skis That Can Enhance Your Uphill Performance

PLUGHITZ Live Presents (Video)

In recent years, technological advancements have permeated various aspects of outdoor sports, and skiing is no exception. The introduction of electric skis, particularly the innovative E-SKIMO, is revolutionizing the skiing experience by significantly enhancing uphill performance. This breakthrough technology combines the principles of electric bicycles with ski mountaineering, allowing skiers to ascend slopes with unprecedented ease and efficiency. How do Electric Skis Work? The core concept behind electric skis is to provide assistance that empowers skiers during uphill climbs. Traditionally, ski mountaineering, also known as ski touring or "skinning uphill," requires considerable physical exertion and stamina. However, with the integration of a battery, motor, and sophisticated sensors, E-SKIMO drastically reduces the effort needed to ascend. According to the developers of this technology, skiers can expect to travel uphill four times faster than they would with conventional skis. This remarkable speed enhancement is a game-changer for both recreational skiers and serious mountaineers, enabling them to explore more terrain in less time. The mechanics of the electric ski system are equally impressive. Each ski is equipped with a motor that drives a rotating belt, providing traction as the skier ascends. This innovative design allows for synchronized movement, with the motors communicating to ensure a smooth and efficient uphill experience. The lightweight construction of the components is another significant advantage, as skiers can detach the battery and motor once they reach the summit, reducing the burden during the downhill journey.Standing Out in the SnowOne of the most compelling aspects of electric skis is their ability to adapt to varying snow conditions and terrain. The E-SKIMO employs artificial intelligence to analyze factors such as snow type, slope steepness, and skier weight. This data-driven approach allows the skis to deliver power in a controlled and natural manner, maintaining balance and stability. The algorithm behind this technology is designed to ensure that skiers do not lose control due to excessive power, which is a critical consideration in a sport where balance is paramount.Durability is a key concern for any outdoor equipment, and the developers of E-SKIMO are focused on ensuring that the system can withstand the rigors of use. While the longevity of the belt system is still being evaluated, the aim is to make it last for several seasons, allowing skiers to enjoy the benefits of electric assistance without frequent replacements. The excitement surrounding electric skis is palpable among enthusiasts. Early users have reported positive experiences, with many expressing eagerness to return to the slopes and test the technology in fresh snow conditions. The potential for electric skis to enhance the skiing experience is not just about speed; it also opens up new possibilities for exploration and adventure in the mountains. Conclusion: An Unepected Way to Ski Using AIIn conclusion, electric skis represent a significant advancement in skiing technology, particularly for uphill performance. By combining electric assistance with sophisticated algorithms and lightweight design, E-SKIMO allows skiers to ascend mountains with greater speed and ease than ever before. Whether you're a runner, cyclist, or multi-sport athlete wanting to mix in some backcountry skiing or SKIMO racing, this conversation has you covered. Then, in part two, I'm shifting gears to something I've been working hard on: my new novella, THE RUNNER. It's coming to you in serial audiobook format from Christmas to New Year's, and in this episode, you'll get a preview. THE RUNNER tells the story of Carp, a middle-aged man navigating the ups and downs of life in the Rockies. With themes of endurance sports, psychology, love, loss, and more, it's a quirky, unique tale that I'm excited to share with you. Happy New Year everyone and welcome to episode 56 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast. Today, we're tackling the topic of Winter Sports Nutrition, featuring Kylee Van Horn, RDN. Kylee is a sports dietitian based in the mountains of Colorado, regularly works with winter athletes in her private practice, FlyNutrition, and is a runner and winter athlete herself. Although I used to ski when I was young, I haven't done much more than sled down a small city hill in recent memory, so I invited Kylee on the show to discuss the many unique nutrition challenges that winter athletes face, and to share her expertise on how to fuel smartly and adequately in these conditions. We had a great chat filled with tons of useful information and winter fueling tips, including:What happens to your body in  extreme cold or at high altitude, and how does this affect your nutrition and hydration needs? What types of strategies can you utilize in these environments, to stay well-fueled and hydrated?Logistical issues that make eating and drinking more difficult relating to winter sporting gear (e.g. trying to fuel while using poles)Differences that arise from one winter sport to the nextWhy remaining well-fueled and hydrated is so important to performance AND safety when in the mountainsAnd much more!If you engage in winter sports or want to in the future, get ready to take some notes! Thanks again Kylee for your time and for enlightening us with so many practical winter fueling ideas.Links & Resources:Kylee's Website: https://www.flynutrition.org/Follow on InstagramOther Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? Chilean voters recently rejected an extremely progressive (and extremely long at 170 pages) constitution. It would have ensured animal rights, as well as rights to “neurodiversity” and “digital disconnection.” Ted Piccone of Brookings and the World Justice Project examines if Chile's new constitution was too progressive or just too long. Plus, can't we just enjoy the moment when the President went asking for a dead lady? And in the Antwentig, mo' Skimo than you ever hoped for.
