Food is at the heart of every life, every home and every community, but sadly that fact has slowly been forgotten over many decades of progress in the centralized and industrialized food systems in America. Replaced by processed, adulterated and factory farmed foods, many of the traditions of the American food culture have not only been forgotten, but in many cases outright shunned. Well today I welcome back Judson Carroll, a true American omnivore who not only has a passion for eating and cooking a variety of foods, but has shared that knowledge and passion with the world through his recent book “The Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else” TOPICS DISCUSSED: * Judson's story of learning to cook from his Grandmother * The basics of how to raise snails for food and the fact that their eggs are very similar to caviar * The decline of the family table and community meals * The loss of food culture and traditions in America * The value of eating as seasonally and locally as possible for the best possible health * The possibilities offered by eating small game such as groundhog, which can be compared to high quality pork * The diversity of edible aquatic species and the folly of the designation of some species as “trash fish” * The inherent prejudices developed by many against eating certain foods and how/why that has come to be * A little history of soup in America * Some tips and tricks for home fermentation including some great recipe ideas like fermented hot sauce and “redneck kimchi” VISIT JUDSON'S SUBSTACK: https://judsoncarroll.com LISTEN TO JUDSON'S SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN HERBS PODCAST: APPLE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs/id1540427015 SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/3NBHEtJe8IXmlnFvCdmDox BUY JUDSON'S COOKBOOK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2

Mandy’s parkour joke. Technology ruined the blog. Cougar is a house pet in Russia. How to get rid of mice in your home. Impeachment is pure politics. DACA protests at the Supreme Court. Between the alligator moat revelation and horrendous, inhumane taking of children from their parents, when considering Donald Trump’s immigration policy, it can be hard to get past the headlines. But it turns out, the immigration story serves as an incredibly useful way to consider the entire Trump presidency: Obsession, chaos, fear, depravity, and yet – meaningful, important, and potentially-lasting change that has shifted not only how the world views America, but how we view ourselves. The story has been told – through a combination of clear context, incredible detail, and expert storytelling by Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Michael D. Shear in their book, “Border Wars: Inside Trump’s Assault on Immigration.” As you’ll hear in our conversation, Davis and Shear bring us inside the rooms –uncomfortable places, really – as extreme ideas about immigration move directly from the collective minds of Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Jeff Sessions into the campaign and then presidency of Donald Trump. You’ll hear how Miller outmaneuvered generals and cabinet secretaries to seize control You also hear about the key player who might be most confounding of all: Former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. In fact as you hear more about these policymakers – and as you read Hirshfeld Davis and Shear’s book –it all seems to lead to the central questions of our time: Who are we, and what is America? Some background on Julie and Mike who, as far as I can tell from what is admittedly quick research, seem to have covered every important Washington D.C. story in the last 25 years. Julie is Congressional Editor at The New York Times; she also serves as a CNN political analyst. Michael is a White House Correspondent for The New York Times, and you can also catch him frequently on CNN. For show notes & my newsletter, go to chrisriback.com.
Why are there so many gun related shootings in America? Some say video games are to blame. Some say tougher gun laws, background checks and others say there should be authorization for law enforcement to take your guns away if you seem to pose a threat. Why does the US govt want to have the right to invade your home and confiscate your weapons.? Great question. Check out this episode of the Triple Effect.

How will his appointments to the bench shape the future of the judicial branch in an increasingly diverse and pluralistic America? Some of the country's most hot-button issues wind up before a court, and religious groups on all sides of those debates have a stake in the outcomes of those future court battles. We will explore the lasting impact Trump's appointments will have on the law of the land in America. Moderator: Kelsey Dallas. Speakers: Robert Alt, Susan Becker, Howard Friedman.

Is free speech under threat at colleges across America? Some argue campus environments are no longer conducive to open dialogue. Others say debates on campus are alive and well. A recent nationwide survey of younger voters shows their commitment to free speech is reduced. Of 1,500 undergraduate students across U.S. universities, a fifth of them responded that it’s acceptable to use physical force to silence a speaker who makes “offensive and hurtful comments.” In this episode, Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang discuss the survey with Catherine Rampell, who wrote about it in a recent opinion piece in The Washington Post. Rampell frequently covers economics, public policy, politics and culture, with a special emphasis on data-driven journalism. Before joining The Post, Rampell wrote about economics and theater for The New York Times. She has received the Weidenbaum Center Award for Evidence-Based Journalism and is a Gerald Loeb Award finalist. She grew up in South Florida (the New York part) and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University in 2007.
